At best, this restaurant was incredibly underwhelming. I ordered the artichoke dip for an appetizer and a tomato basil pizza for a main course. The artichoke dip was a poor name for what is essentially a bowl filled with hot, stringy, oily cheese. It's a great choice for experiencing subsequent stomach pain. I had high hopes for a good pizza. Immediately upon seeing the monstrosity before me, my appetite had disappeared. An American take on the classic Margherita pizza, it features a base of bland, canned-tasting red sauce: sweetend and underseasoned. The tomatoes had oddly been cored, but otherwise tasted fine. The most disappointing part of the pizza was the basil: approximately 2 basil leaves chiffonaded and cast into clumps on top. They were obviously cut earlier in the day and left to sit, as they were wilted and had lost pretty much all flavor due to being cut way before they were to be used. The only truly positive thing about the pizza was the bread and crust: it tasted good and was perfectly cooked. It's a shame that this wonderful base was ruined with the kind of careless work and poor ingredients you'd expect from a large chain restaurant. Absolute favorite restaurant in the world (so far) to get pizza! Everytime I'm in MT I try to eat here. Their options for dairy and gluten free pizza are hands down the most tasty, and they have such great specialty options. I know they have a great beer selection, and their wings are also good. Back in the day I used to get their house salad, with house dressing. Atmosphere is rustic and comfy, and smells so good inside. Personal size pizzas are so generous in size. It is a nice space, and a great concept. This is the original location for MacKenzie River Pizza. However, it just was not as good as I remembered. I had the Rancher, and my friend had the pepperoni. There was nothing especially bad, but I expected more. I asked for my crust to be cooked "well done", and it was still on the doughy side. The meats, sauce and veggies did not seem to have a lot of flavor. Service was good. Overall, it lacked bang for the buck. read more

We made a quick, and I mean quick stop into Bozeman before our flights. We found this cute pizza place on main street after trying to eat at local brew pubs. Little did I know it was #1 on Urbanspoon in Bozeman. As our only stop for about 35min, it represented the town well. We each had a different local brew, and ordered two large pies: the Sequoia (veggie) and Stockman (all meat). The Sequoia pizza was not my favorite, but it wasn't bad. The pesto was too subtle or over cooked, and artichokes are not my preference for pizza. The crust/dough was very tasty though and well cooked. As you can see, I couldn't even get my camera out in time before half the pizza was taken. This was a meat lovers dream, steak, pepperoni and sausage. It's also a few bites short of a heart attack. The problem is you want to take those bite because this was one of the best tasting meaty pizzas I've had in a long time. I usually go with healthier options, but when in Rome (i.e. Montana), meat is called for. Even though we only had a few minutes for food before catching our flight, I'm glad we got a taste of the local scene (pun intended). If you are looking for a place to eat in Bozeman, I only have one experience to reference, but I highly recommend MacKenzie River Pizza. read more

After a long day driving I craved pizza. But Thai food is my favorite. Hotel desk clerk recommended this place. Wow! Glad he did ! Thai pizza with thin crust was the best pizza I ever ate!!!!!! Perfectly seasoned with chicken, mandarin oranges, peanuts and red peppers--- great idea!!! Delivery was as promised. "Apple cobbler" I ordered came with 2 scoops vanilla ice cream in separate container so apple crisp was warm, ice cream cold... Nice touch. "Cobbler" was more of a crisp and I would not get again as it needed more apples for my taste. I shall make plans to pass through Bozeman again just for that Thai pizza! read more

We decided to go down town for dinner later than usual. Everywhere was closing early. Luckily for us, MacKenzie River was one of the only place open. The food was awesome. She walked off as soon as we paid and we waited and waited for someone to acknowledge us so we could ask for peppers and Parmesan. We felt like we were bothering the staff. Really like the original pizza because it's different and doughy. My favorite is the Club pizza. Salads are top notch. But, the nachos were an extreme disappointment. Cheese burnt on. So I've always loved Mackenzie but there really seems to be a lack of service going on there now. I ordered a Polynesian and requested no almonds, simple enough. This is for a legit food allergy. Got the pizza for takeout and of course, covered in almonds. That's kind of a big error. Called them back and complained and all they offered was another pizza in an hour. Starving after a day of skiing I declined and we ate something else. So we paid $35 for a pizza we couldn't eat. Ultimately, we chose not to go back in an hour to get another one. That's on us. I wish they would have an ounce of service IQ to know they they shouldn't have given up at that point and offer us something else. Disappointed. read more

This is a homey, authentic montana restaurant. You get a large, filling meal for an extremely reasonable price. We got a few drinks, a small pizza, a large half-and-half pizza, and a cobb salad for less than $25 dollars. Lovely, attentive staff and great atmosphere. Many people who know me well would argue that I don't have a heart. My intense cynicism and general pessimistic outlook merely qualifies their claims. And honestly, I don't deny it. Because I know that my heart belongs wholly to MacKenzie River Pizza. I first came to MRP in April of 2011 while visiting Bozeman and Montana State University. MacKenzie River was one of the first restaurants we dined at in Bozeman and was, in all honesty, one of the reasons I chose to go to MSU. The experience was holistically phenomenal. The service was fantastic, the atmosphere was cozy, and the food was...well...life-changing. Our wonderful waitress, Mikala (who has since become a friend of mine as my friends and I could be called permanent residents of the establishment), gave me and my parents the warmest possible welcome and showed us the kind-heartedness and general hospitality that is signature of Bozeman. As for the food, you really can't go wrong. Everything is made to the highest quality standards and is the closest thing to ambrosia. Of course, the pizza, being the focus of the menu, is hard to beat anywhere. My personal recommendation is for the Sequoia (on thin crust), a pesto pizza with artichoke hearts, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and pine nuts. But, one item that seems to be overlooked is the Cowboy Nachos. Get them. And get them with steak. The first bite was so outstanding I was nearly thrown into cardiac arrest. MacKenzie river is simply a fantastic place to be. After the first visit, MRP became my main gustatory tie to Bozeman. Every time there is any sort of occasion, whether just getting back to Bozeman after a break, one of us celebrating a birthday, or surviving another week, we choose MacKenzie River as our restaurant of choice. read more

Holy crap, those are some mighty fine meatballs in marinara. I'm a half-Italian from north Jersey (mom's side), so I have a pretty high standard for a meatball. I can honestly say I'm impressed. I'm familiar with MacKenzie as my cousin worked at the Kalispell location, but had never been there myself for dinner - so this is my first visit and review of the restaurant. We chose pizza on our trip through Bozeman as a safe bet - something that would be quick, safe to eat, and easy to please (it's pizza after all). However, we ran into 3 major issues with our decision to eat at MacKenzie - 1) slow service: 1 hour and 15 minutes to get our pizza, 2) poor communication: our server, while a very nice guy, did not communicate what was going on with our order, and 3) incorrect order: we asked for red sauce, we got garlic-olive-oil sauce. The result was very garlicky and oily - something we were not expecting. I wish I would've left at the 1-hour mark. We'd been better off. Oh - and the cheese - you'd better like cheese. They lay it on thick. And the tomatoes slices we added to our pizza were very thin and transparent - almost non-existent. We were hoping for a light and fresh and brick-oven style pizza (ordering a thin crust), but the result was something much, much heavier and greasier. Nice place, people, and the food is okay probably for most, but I hope and trust the owners read this review and work to fix these issues. The problems we had were somewhat related to the arts and crafts fair down the street, which packed MacKenzie that night, but it's an annual affair and when asked why our order took 1 hour 15 minutes, they blamed the fair, rather than their own unpreparedness. Price was acceptable, but not inexpensive. One large pizza and 3 drinks = about $60 with tip. Great selection of local beer. read more

Rolled into town late one night with a craving for pizza and beer. The place was somewhat busy but not crazy and there were plenty of tables/booths available. We asked the hostess for a booth and that wasn't the right thing to do. You'd have thought we asked her explain the Riemann Hypothesis. It took about 10 minutes to speak to a waitress, speak to another, come back to us but leave, clean a table, grab menus, and finally seat us. If I had to guess I would say there were no less than 8 booths open that were all clean. Not sure why the issue but we were now seated and it was over. This is when our waitress Sierra arrived to take our drink order and save the meal. We decided on the Driftboat Amber Ale and the Lee Metcalf Pale Ale for starters and throughout the meal also tried the Wheatfish from Great Northern Brewery. For an appetizer we tried an order of Thai Peanut Wings. The Beer arrived quickly and cold and the wings weren't too much of a wait later. Beer was great and the wings were decent but oversauced. The pizza menu was unique with about 30 different signature pizzas to choose from. With such a variety we decided three thin crust smalls would feed us and allow a few pieces to make it back to the motel. Our order included the Good Ol' Boy, the Stockman, and the Caribbean Chicken. It took about 20 minutes for the food to arrive but the cold beer that Sierra kept coming and the atmosphere made it a quick wait. I really enjoyed the Stockman but all three pizzas were great. I believe trying a few was the right call. All in all it The Mackenzie River Brewing Company provided a great meal and experience. Sierra topped it all off with friendly fast service and a smile. We will definitely return when back in town and would recommend you give it a try for yourself. read more

Without a doubt, this is the best pizza I've had in my entire life. The staff is upbeat and friendly, and the menu has an incredibly diverse amount of options. Everything here is good -- from the lodgepoles to the salads (try the Thai Peanut dressing) to the sandwiches, it seems like it is impossible to wrong here. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because the wait can be long at times. Other than that, it is a great experience! This is my go-to place in downtown Bozeman. The service is attentive, and chatty if you want to chat, informative if you need some advice about Bozeman, and very efficient. House salad with pears, grape nuts and creamy house dressing is light and refreshing, leaving plenty of room for my favorite small thin crust pizza. Local beers, great Arnold Palmers, wines are okay. Wine is reasonably priced, so we buy a bottle and take home the rest if we aren't in the mood to get silly. read more

I love Bozeman -- and the local, community atmosphere that pervades it all. So my bias is to love a place that got its start here -- and seems to be a local institution of sorts. But I was pretty disappointed. The pizza is nothing special. The veggies are ours might have been fresh, but I could barely see or taste them. And the entire pizza was overcooked, with the cheese hardened to a dark brown. The crust had potential, but it was hard to tell. I loved the rotating selection from all the local breweries. Very cool. But the atmosphere feels make the whole place feel like a chain restaurant. I appreciate it being family-friendly, but the layout makes it impersonal. While this is a pizza place, I had a huge craving for some pasta one day in Bozeman. Someone had recommending this place to me and said the food was delicious. Also that the menu has a wide range of different foods and that was absolutely true! While the pizzas coming out looked to die for, I needed my pasta. I had ordered the buffalo blue cheese mac and cheese and OH MY GOD. Normally at restaurants I cannot finish my meal, but I ate the whole dish and licked the bowl clean. The portion size was perfect and the tastes were amazing! Great buffalo sauce with the right amount of blue cheese. I was COMPLETELY satisfied. My mother who I was with ordered the nachos and they were towering! Every bite was filled with the perfect amount of nacho toppings. A great place to stop off on main street after a long day of fishing, hiking, snowboarding, sitting inside playing boardgames all day when it's snowing or whatever else it is that you do....Chill atmosphere, good friendly service, and probably the best pizza that Bozeman has to offer (although not amazing compared to some of my favorites elsewhere). MacKenzie has a pretty good selection of Micro brews, thin/thick/or deep dish pizza with a variety of toppings, some great appetizers and ok salads. I would absolutely start off with the pesto lodgepoles, they are delicious to dip in both ranch and marinara. We ordered both the deep dish "Thai Pie" and "Veggie" pizzas and to be honest I wasn't psyched about either of them. I think with the deep dish they skimp a bit on the sauce and over cheese it- crust is only ok too. I would move straight to the 15" thin crust pizza, which is brand new for this joint, but I think more flavorful and delicious- pizza done right. Overall it's a great place to hang out and grab a beer and pizza with friends on a Friday night! read more

The pizza here is good. Traditional American style in my opinion. They have some more "gourmet" options to choose from as well and their salads are decent. Overall, it's not a place I'd choose to have dinner out with friends, the atmosphere is more for an older crowd it seems. Their pizza is filling and well made with quality ingredients. When there are events downtown like Music on Main they usually have a table out where you can by pizza by the slice, always piping hot and delicious. For traditional pizza, they get 4 stars. For atmosphere and selection, I'd give it 3. Would love to see them bring a trendier and fun atmosphere into the restaurant. Dining here just isn't memorable or pleasant enough to justify the price of eating in. read more

One of the best pizza crust I have ever had! We started with he artichoke dip which was very flavorful and best part was the artichokes which is pretty rare these days. They don't over do the cheese. We shared a small pizza 6 slices for 2 people, we had some to take home. 1/2 Hot Hawaiian and 1/2 Flat Head (the recommendation of a very nice waitress). Then shared a Apple Cobbler for desert which was also wonderful. To top off my great experience I had a Cold Smoke Scotch Ale with dinner. It was awesome! read more
