We were on vacation in Bozeman this week and stopped here for lunch. The service was amazing. Our server was very attentive and conscientious of my dairy allergy. He was also great to give us a taster of the cider, which we then ordered two glasses of. The blackberry lime cider was 5/5 stars. Came to the Mackenzie rive on a recommendation. Great aosphere and the place smells great when you walk it. We started with the Greek Salid small and it was great. A good split as it a decent size for one person. Then we ordered two small pizzas. A tomatoe and basil which was really good and refreshing. The other was the hot Hawaiian. Both good pizzas I think we liked the tomatoe better and if you threw a handful of jalapeños on it, it would be perfect. Ryan was our server and had great recomendations and very open and genuine. What a fun place to eat! My husband and I found this place online before we arrived and knew from the menu we had to come. They had tons of gluten free options for both appetizers and main dishes. We shared the gluten free artichoke dip which wasn't my favorite but my husband loved it. He also had a Buffalo gluten free pizza which he hasn't had anywhere else so that was fun. I had a plain cheese pizza and salad combo for the lunch special. The house salad was really tasty! It had pears on it which I was skeptical at first, but was so glad I tried it! After a night at the climbing gym we decided to stop in Bozeman for some dinner and after deciding between Five on Black or this place, we settled for this place. Eh, probably a poor choice... this place was just okay. Their menu looked good with ample choices, but unfortunately the food just lacked flavor. I ordered the Humble Pie - normally I create my own white pizza base with spinach so this one seemed like a no-brainer. I was very taken aback by the presentation of it - huge, thick rings of ricotta cheese circling the crust that ended up getting all scraped off. After doing so I honestly thought the pizza was just fine, but probably not one I'd order again. I also ordered it on thin crust and it came out on original crust - not a deal breaker, but again, just not what I was expecting. My partner ordered the Rollino appetizer which he thought was good, but was underwhelmed by his flavorless Tuscan penne. The service was decent, no complaints. I would have given this place a 5 star, however we had a slight situation that caused a delay in the food coming out to us and definitely a lot of confusion. After sitting down at the restaurant, we placed our order, got our drinks and then my daughter had to go to the bathroom so I had to go with her. We were gone for about 5 minutes I would say and came back to an empty table. All our drinks gone (they were 3/4s full) and my daughters drawings/menu gone. I stopped our waitress to ask what happened and she noted the host must have thought we left and cleaned up the table to get another guest in, who leaves right after ordering and having barely touched their drinks? I do believe this also caused a delay in our order because i looked around for the host and once we met eye contact, she went running back to the kitchen in the middle of a family she was helping check in and I believe she had asked for our order to be cancelled, several groups that came in and ordered after us got their food first which is why I'm almost positive this is what occurred. My daughter ordered the Mac n cheese kids pizza which she enjoyed for the most part and then a Huckade which she said was too sweet but overall enjoyed. I ordered two items off the limited 406 menu to taste and share with her, I don't recall the name of the salad but it involved huckleberries, goat cheese, a lemon vinaigrette of some sort and walnuts and then the Yellowstone (?) flatbread that was topped with smoked trout. Out of the two, I would highly recommend the salad, one of the best I've had. The flatbread was good but I felt the dill was too strong and the cheese was overpowering (I believe it may have been goat cheese), you couldn't taste much of the other ingredients. Grouchy hostess and food took way too long Came in with our family for parents weekend at MSU and had heard this was the place to go. Upon entering the hostess was not happy to hear we had 8 people in our party...gave a huff even. There was a large table that we suggested would work (trying to help out her frustration) and she told us with attitude "I will have to clean it first". Like yeah we know‍ Then made us wait 10 more minutes because "I need to give the servers a break". HUH?? We finally had to ask if we could sit. Not sure why she was irritated at us. Off day I guess but it started our experience on the wrong foot. Food took extremely long and the server, who by the way was extremely nice and helpful, was so apologetic. We ordered beers, pasta, pizza and salad. Beers were great. Pizza was good. Pasta was ok. Salads were horrible. The server ended up taking one off because it was that bad. If I could rate negative 5 stars on service I would!!! We waited at least 20 minutes after being seated with menus before the waitress even offered to take our drink order. When she finally acknowledged us and came over it was another 15 minutes. We wanted to order cheese bread and actually had to call her back to the table because she dropped off the drinks at one end and dashed off. The only good service we received was from the young lady cleaning tables. Our waitress ran by us without stopping several times to pick up her tips from customers who left. We had 2 people who were running late but wanted to go ahead and order. Unfortunately we were totally ignored even after holding up empty glasses as she walked past. The pizza was acceptable but not nearly as good as it usually is. We had 8 people but for simplicity figured it out between us so she didn't have to deal with 2 checks. We should have sat separately because to our surprise an 18% gratuity was added to our check. We arrived at 5:30 and certainly hadn't expected it would take 2 plus hours before we could eat and get the check to leave. We ourselves gathered and stacked our dishes while waiting and waiting for our check. We finally had to ask the bus girl to send our waitress over as she completely ignored our table as she had done the entire evening. The service was non-existent! We may have been a group of 8 however 3 of us have years of experience with food service and always try to make things easy for wait-staff. If I were the manager I would have fired her on the spot! The tip requirement is BS when waitresses know they will get an 18% tip and not have to provide decent service! We will not be returning to McKenzie River in Belgrade again! We try to go about once a month and spend around $140-$150 each time we go and tip very well when we get good service. The host (probably manager) was warm and welcoming but we were pretty much abandoned after that. took nearly 15 minutes after being seated just to get water and nearly an hour for 5 entrees. the waiter did not check in with us, refill drinks, explain if maybe there was a problem in the kitchen and was actively avoiding us. we gave this place two tries and it was the same each time. good menu, ambiance and food, but the extreme wait and lack of service makes this place a non starter.
