Ordered takeout from this place and they messed up my order. I ordered 6 items but only received 2. And what I got wasn't very good either. I got the beef combo pho and duck bao. The noodles and broth were decent, but the beef was cut way too thick and severely over cooked. The perfect beef pho is one where the beef is cut super thin, has a good amount of fat, and still a little pink. The duck bao was very mediocre. The duck meat was dry and didn't taste fresh. If I had to guess they used leftover duck meat to make the bao. read more

Passing through Closter, on the way back to NYC, stopped for a bite at Ma Mi. Ma(ma) Mi(a)! What a nice find. Their jerk beef pho, though non-traditional, is amazing. Deep rich flavor, just enough spice for a punchy kick. For a to-go order, you get the noodles in a separate container, to keep the soup from being mushy. Very thoughtful. I was excited to find this place close by as I was craving pho. I ordered the beef pho, duck bao buns and a thai iced tea. I was super disappointed in the quality and lack of flavor of the food. The pho was disgusting and the bean sprouts tasted dirty like straight dirt almost as if they didn't even wash them and the beef was bland. I ended up throwing everything away except for the pho broth ( surprisingly tasty on it's own), which I ended up using to make my own meal the next day. Even the thai iced tea was sub par and thai iced tea isnt that hard to make. The only decent thing was the duck baos. At least the duck was moist and flavorful. Overall, I will definitely not be ordering from here again. I am upset I waited so much money on a meal. Also when I went to pick up my food (ordered off seamless) the girl was super rude. read more

All I can say is wow. I've been looking for a Vietnamese place to satisfy the Pho cravings and this place did more than that. I ordered the Spicy Jerk Dip sandwich and was blown away by the balanced flavors with a nice kick all while that courageous roll held everything in place nicely up to the last bite. We ordered Pho for take out. One beef, one seafood. We received two beef, one with no trimmings and with the meat left in the broth to boil to a rubbery consistency. No sprouts, no basil, no jalapeños, and the broth was as good as warm water. We called to complain that the order was incorrect and incomplete. They claimed they could not refund the order so I disputed it with my bank - which Ma Mi disputed. $35 + $7 cash tip thrown in the garbage. Additionally we both ate some of it only to become sick to our stomachs. Disgusting food. Disgusting service. And the nerve of them to dispute the charge back (I only asked for 1/2 of the charges for the wrong meal). Terrible restaurant. Go elsewhere. read more

I had ordered the spicy jerk beef pho while cuzzie ordered the SOTD (special of the day) spicy mango fried chicken bahn mi and shared the pad Thai wontons and bbq pork bao buns. Everytingg yum! The pho wa flavorful and generous in noodle with a nice spice kick, the wontons are simple but since the pad Thai was made right it was good, the bao buns were generous in meat with lots of veggie toppings and the spicy mango fried chicken was a tad bit spicier due to the spiced mango and had proportioned flavorful fried chicken in the serving. Great food! The whole family loved it. The service was amazing and everything came out quick. Small dining room but we were able to sit comfortably with a family of 5! We have very picky eaters and they were very happy to accommodate that. They cooked to order so even my pickiest daughter was able to order it the way she liked it and at no time did they make us feel bad about having it prepared without ingredients. We had Pho Grilled chicken Original Banh Mi I am about to order another as they are fighting over it. BOA buns And chicken avocado summer rolls. Everything was great however the Bahn mi was exceptional. When we normally go out it easily cost us $110. We ordered a dinner for everyone + a sandwich and spring roll, and Boa buns and paid under $60! Excellent value and customer service We will definitely be back over and over again. read more

I do order here regularly more out of necessity than desire since I live in the neighborhood. It is Pho in a bastardized takeout form managing to deliver the most basic resemblance of Vietnam's most iconic dish. The beef stock is slightly better than what you could whip up yourself with canned beef broth at home and a little TLC. The meat is cooked so well that it slightly resembles beef jerky in a noodle bowl. This place makes no effort to be authentic if you get my drift. But I digress...I still end up coming back from time to time for no other reason that it is the only PHO restaurant in the area.....and that is the secret to this place's success...lack of competition. The place is not terrible per se but neither is a Nissan instant Cup of Noodles.....sometimes eating by convenience is a necessity rather than a choice. read more

I rolled through Closter while scouting mansions and found this place on yelp. I usually go to a very Authentic Vietnamese place on Kenmare in lower Manhattan so I had low expectations for a little town in Jersey. I got the original and I have to say it's one of the best I've had. The grilled pork was tender juicy and delectable. Loaded with grated carrots, cucumber and a couple jalapeños on top. I'm not sure if they hollow out the baguette but I love that it seemed very minimal on the bread yet still held everything in place. I just finished eating it and I am contemplating going back to pick up another for later - that's just how good it was. If you haven't tried it yet, no risk involved here. Enjoy! read more

I ordered the Duck Bao Buns and the Pad Thai Dumplings. Everything was delicious. The buns were simple but had great flavor from the hoisin sauce, cilantro and crisp cucumbers. The dumplings were fried to perfection served with a nice sweet lime dipping sauce. I also had to order a Thai Iced Tea because who could resist? All in all an enjoyable experience. Very disappointed. We had eaten here before more than once and food was always good. This time it was sloppy. Like they didn't care. We asked for pho and the portion got smaller. I also got a duck bun (I've eaten before) and it was ridiculous. The bun was broken, there was a tinny piece of duck in the middle and no sauce. Debated between three stars but we saw a small cockroach crawling on the floor at the end of our meal which minused another star. Overall the establishment looked clean and service was friendly, but the girl behind the counter taking our orders couldn't recommend any of the foods on the menu cuz she didn't try anything. The food isn't bad here. But if you're looking for a good original, home cooked pho or bahn mi, you won't find it here. The food here seemed very Americanized to us. The pho was ok but nothing crazy delicious. We liked that it had lots of meat in it but it lacked the depth of fish sauce flavor that pho usually has. The bahn mi was the most disappointing. We got the classic and ma mi. Both had a good amount of meat and sauce but that was what we didn't like. The classic did not have pate like a good bahn mi should. There was so much meat and sauce that it overpowered the taste of what bahn mi should be. The pickled veggies did not taste pickled at all. It was just crunchy water. Don't get me wrong, I used to love this place, it could have been great when it first opened, then it started feeling dirty. I gave this place so many chances, but every experience seemed filthy. From the personal hygiene of the person taking orders, to the sticky floors, to the weird smells and dirty mops/brooms laying around, to the kitchen staff walking in and out of the restroom. I began to see how the sandwiches, while good in theory, are just slapped together and the bread is always soggy. When I saw that their health department inspection grade was pending, I realized that you can always trust your gut when you walk in a restaurant. Fast casual Vietnamese in a nondescript storefront in "downtown" Closter. Why is it like a half hour from the rest of Bergen County? Can someone invent a teleporter already? Limited menu but solid on what they do offer. It can be summed up as a base of salad, pho, banh mi, or rice bowl; add protein, accent with carrot, cucumber and mint. This place is really clean and the ingredients in their food is so fresh. I love the signs on the walls of this place too. This is a take-out food or quick eating spot so there's not too much eating. I've only had the Bao Buns -- cripsy tofu, spicy jerk beef, and bbq pork and it was all really good and the I really the buns. I felt like it they could've put more food in the buns though. They are on the small side, that's why it's only $5 each, so a hungry guy would definitely need to order a few of these. My sister also ordered the thai iced tea which was a little watery. When I came here with my sister, we were a little annoyed by the cashier. This place is not like a sit-down restaurant so I don't expect the cashier to do anything too crazy but the cashier was so overtly unfriendly and did not seem happy to be there at all. It was the complete opposite from one of the owners who was helping out in the kitchen. The owner was so nice and we saw her come of out of the kitchen area and interacting with other customers too. A tip to the owners/management, when you hire young people to work for you business, make sure they believe in your business because they represent you. The food all look delicious, duck buns being my favorite, chicken in spicy ban mi seasoned well but the all other items we ordered fell under expectations. Everything was just too sweet, it's like they accidentally used sugar instead of salt. Pad Thai was almost inedible, I had to douse it with Sriracha to balance out the sweetness. Let me just start by saying WOW! We have now been by Ma Mi three times in two weeks to pick up take out. Every, single, solitary thing...IS AMAZING. Utterly delicious, cooked perfectly, seasoned impeccably, perfect sized portions, packaged well...and service with huge smiles and great personalities! The spicy ma mi: crispy chicken which stays crispy for HOURS later, just the right amount of spice, soft bread, an abundance of pickled vegetables. The Pho dip: while a little messy, scrumptious. Lots of meat and sprouts and plenty of jalapeños for a good kick! The broth to dip is delicious, ate half with and half without, excellent both ways! The original: tender grilled pork, aioli, crisp pickled vegetables. The bau buns are all amazing. Tender fluffy buns, crisp vegetables the meat is well seasoned and sauced. We really loved the pork & jerk beef, the duck was good but a touch sweet needed some more pickled veggies but the tofu THE TOFU is HEAVENLY! We could eat 15 of them and call it dinner! The summer roll was a great appetizer and would be a quick lunch as well! Fresh veggies tender shrimp wrapped correctly which is no small feat! The crispy dumplings are incredible and some how even with a 15 minute drive home crispy and filled with yummy pork and shrimp! All of their house made cold beverages are delicious as well! The shrimp chips are super crispy and make a cute sound when you dip them in the zesty sauce. The only thing, and we tell them this there, we cannot WAIT for them to roll out a dessert to round out a completely perfect meal. The girls at the counter are bar none some of the sweetest young ladies I've dealt with at a restaurant possibly ever, very bubbly and helpful with making choices if you aren't sure about what you might like. The wait is short, the restaurant is IMMACULATE. If you haven't been to Ma Mi you haven't lived....
