hot and sour soup, shrimp chow fun, vegetable fried rice, sweet and sour pork, beef with mushroom
    Jane Y.

My favorite American Chinese food take out place, possibly ever. So why only the 4 stars? The place isn't the cleanest, the staff isn't the friendliest, and it's the type of place where you constantly hear horror stories like cooks in the back (it's an open kitchen and you see it right from the register) dipping their bare hands into vats of cracked eggs to fish stuff out... but if you're willing to overlook all of that (idk if the stories are true as I've never witnessed it myself, but my friends claim it to be - and they still love the place regardless) the food is delicious! I've never been able to find an American Chinese take out place as good. The establishment is not fancy, and definitely not sparkly clean, but they package their food well. They offer services on the delivery apps, but I like to directly give places my business, so when I call the employee who answers is never friendly, but they always get my order correct and the estimated time for pick up is always accurate. And the prices are very fair. They also have a simple set up in the front where you can take your take out and eat it there outdoors if you please - great for this current covid-19 times, but it's also regularly used otherwise. They have so many things on the menu, so if you need some suggestions, my favorites are: beef chow fun, sweet and sour pork, happy family and their hot and sour soup! They also have a lunch menu which is FABULOUS and a great deal for your buck. Also, you can always modify the rice that comes with your entree. Rice options are: friend rice, white rice, and brown rice.

    Lobster with ginger and scallions

I ordered the lobster with ginger and scallions and was a little apprehensive about it. But did it anyway I'm so glad I did it was delicious and the lobster was not small. It was a nice size.

House Special Wontons (aka "Crack Dumplings")

4 fast food type stars. Although I have not lived in Cresskill in almost 15 years, I still have my menu numbers committed to memory. The wontons, affectionately called "crack dumplings" are made in house, and their roast pork fried rice has never included peas and carrots (very important). Don't show up at Good Taste expecting: -a maitre d' -a restroom -a table -chair(s) However, if you enjoy picking up the phone and ordering an entire menu section's worth of food and having it ready for pick up in 10 minutes and be entirely edible and reasonably priced, knock yourself out and give them a call.

I haven't eaten from this place since the 90's and I ordered delivery yesterday. The woman on the phone was short and quick taking my order (typical for a Chinese takeout place). My delivery came in less than 15 minutes (I live about a mile from here). The delivery guy was weird in the sense that he just took my money and left. My bill came to $18.48 and I gave him a coupon for $2 off with a $20 bill. He said okay and walked away. What if I wanted change? I didn't, but I never said that. Anyway, I ordered 2 Roast Pork Egg Rolls (big and tasty), House Special Wontons (really really good. The sauce is great and they give you a lot of wontons), a pint of Hot & Sour soup (tasty but needed more heat), and the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce with Pork Fried Rice (old skool lobster sauce with ground pork and HUGE shrimp). I love that this place doesn't put peas in their delicious fried rice or lobster sauce (I hate peas) - back in the day Chinese places usually didn't, but most do now. Another important thing for me was that their rice wasn't yellow (I hate that a lot of places use yellow rice). Overall I really enjoyed my food (and enjoying the leftovers today). A couple of notes: they charge $1 for delivery, even though I ordered egg rolls they didn't throw duck sauce or hot mustard in my bag (just hot sauce and soy), and they charge $.75 for hot & sour soup if you get it with the lunch special (lunch specials come with egg drop soup or wonton soup - a lot of places charge to upgrade to the hot & sour soup).

The younger staff members were very attentive and hardworking--perhaps they just need a bit more guidance. Overall, it's a solid spot in town with plenty of seating and a BYOB option. No frills, simple menu and the chef seemed exacting and totally focused on his craft. I ordered the original shoyu ramen with chasu and red spicy sauce, while wife had the Wafu Shoyu ramen with chicken. Mine was robust and had a clean taste, although I felt the broth was a bit light for my taste compared to some NYC joints. Wife's ramen had even more watery broth - I think because she ordered the "wafu" broth style which menu claimed had no meat, and together with lean chicken meat without much fat, we both agreed it was tad bit boring. I think it's a matter of chef's philosophy and not necessarily a bad thing, but I preferred a bit richer, more viscous broth than this one. We would stop by again if we're in the area, but won't go out of our way for it either. Still, a welcome addition to the East Bergen County area!

And sushi was also delicious and you could taste the freshness of the fish. They have a weekday lunch special but lunch portions were a bit small. I was amazed when I found this little hole-in-the-wall gem in one of my old haunts, Closter. I decided to give it a try. I got two bowls of the beef combo Pho, a single order of the regular beef Pho, the Spicy Ma Mi banh mi sandwich, and a Vietnamese Iced Coffee. These items are the easiest to judge, as most of the Vietnamese restaurants around Bergen County and the surrounding area kind of fail, choosing to cater to the population (skimping on spice, choosing western ingredients over authentic Asian ingredients, etc.). When I picked up my call-in order, the woman at the counter was very nice, though not Vietnamese and neither was the cook (not a problem at all, just an observation). She handed my order and I paid with a nice tip. I made it almost half way home when I got a call from the restaurant, and the same person told me she forgot to hand me the Vietnamese Iced Coffee and apologized. I made a u-turn and drove back to Ma Mi Eatery and picked up my drink. None of this exchange knocks any points against them, in fact, I was happy they called me. When I got home and unpacked everything, it all looked pretty authentic. I started with the combo beef Pho, adding all the toppings, plus the condiments of Hoisin sauce and Sriracha. What was missing was the fresh Thai basil! Then I read the menu and saw that they put the basil IN the soup when they serve it, so when I got home, all the basil was wilted. That's a shame because every single AAA Pho restaurant in Westminster, California serves their Pho with fresh Thai basil so customers can control how much basil they want, and to prevent wilting. That is my only real critique. Otherwise, the Pho was delicious, the broth was flavorful, and the really LOADED the soup with beef. Seriously, a lot of places in Westminster aren't that generous with brisket, but Ma Mi made my day. The Spicy Ma Mi banh mi sandwich was delicious, and loaded with all the appropriate toppings and condiments, though I wish they packed the wet ingredients (pickled carrot and daikon, cilantro, jalapeño) so the bread wouldn't get soggy, which it did, slightly. The bread itself was not the best bread I've had, typically, the bread used in most Vietnamese sandwich shops have a flaky crust and airy soft bread inside. This one a bit coarse on the crust with a heavy crunch. The interior was okay though. All in all, it was a great effort. The next time I revisit my hometown, I'll be sure to stop by Ma Mi Eatery for sure.

On a cold winter Sunday afternoon we placed our orders around 12:40 and it was ready for pick up at 1:15pm. We ordered: - 물냉면 + 목살구이 Mul Naengmyun Cold Noodle + Pork Neck BBQ $24.99: the thin noodles are super bouncy and chewy, excellent take on a summer classic! Soup and toppings hit the spot, a couple slices of beef and Asian pear, thinly slice cucumbers and pickled radish, plus half an egg. The extra side of bbq pork cheek was marinated and grilled to tender perfection. - 소고기 국밥 Spicy Guk Bap $17.99: lightly spicy beef broth with bean sprouts, scallions, and pieces of beef, served over rice. Warm and hearty Korean comfort food on a cold day. - 사골우거지된창국 Sagol Ugeoji Doenjang Guk with Rice $18.99: this beef bone broth is seasoned with fermented bean paste, a flavor somewhat similar to miso with plenty of rehydrated dried napa cabbage. A rich flavor and great over the white rice that came with it. - 돈까스 Donkatsu $19.99 and LA갈비 LA Galbi BBQ $36.99: my friends ordered these items to share with their kids. I didn't try them though they appeared to enjoy. - banchan (side dishes): about 5 or 6 small containers came with the entrees, consisting of regular napa kimchi, a couple different radish kimchis, fish cakes. Very flavorful but I felt like it was thicker and more doughy than I prefer. I would probably skip this for the next visit. The beef soup was delicious as well. It was just the right temperature and it was salty and savory enough without being overwhelming. We went on a particularly cold day so the hot soup really hit the spot. The pieces of beef in the soup were super tender too. Continuing the self-service theme there was a water dispenser and there was even a dispenser of broth at the pick up counter. I liked that broth even more than the broth in the beef soup. I slurped up several cups of it. I'd certainly come back.
