Sushi was fire. Service was extremely weird. My first server was extremely shy was even afraid to give us water or ask what to drink. Our second serve became us came up to us couldn't give us a recommendation. We just ordered what we decided. Then at the end I went to go pay I left a five dollar tip because the service was terrible and like they were closing food was weird. I could not even identify what was chicken and what was fish. 4.5 stars A family member recently suggested that we grab dinner at Hanami, and when I went to look it up on Yelp, I noticed that I had bookmarked it with a note that it had been named the # 2 Chinese restaurant in Bergen County by a reader's choice poll (forgot the publication). Looking at the menu, I saw that they also offered a full Japanese selection with loads of sushi options. Everything sounded great, and I got excited for our meal. When we arrived, I was very impressed by the atmosphere, which was stylish, modern, and spacious. Our waitress was fine, but seemed to have a bit of a chip on her shoulder. Regardless, the food was excellent! The place was BYOB, but did have a Shirley Temple on the beverage section of the menu, which I thought was a cute alternative. As I mentioned, the food options were vast, which made it tough to decide how to proceed. In the end, I decided to get a single piece of sushi and a full Chinese entree. The piece of Eel Sushi I ordered was delivered as sashimi. When I noted the difference to the server, she looked at me like I was nuts, but asked if I wanted a bed of rice to put the fish on...I just said to forget it, since I already had a side of rice with my entree. It was just a weird exchange, but the eel was fresh and delicious. For my main course, I went with the Chicken and Eggplant with Spicy Garlic Basil Sauce and a side of brown rice. The meat was tender, the sauce had just the right amount of heat, and it was all just so flavorful! Plus, the portion was very generous. I tried a bite of the Spicy Asian Flower Herbs Chicken, which was noted as being "wok-sauteed in high flame for extreme spice". The diced chicken with red peppers and snap peas had been cooked with Szechuan peppercorns, but, thankfully, none of actual peppercorns were in the dish. So, there was certainly a level of spice, but actually not a ton of heat. It was really tasty, though! The rest of our party also enjoyed their meals, whether they were from Japanese or Chinese cuisine. I would definitely go back to Hanami, and it was great to find a delicious Asian restaurant in that area. read more

Hanami is one of our usual spots-can't believe I've never written a review! The one is Cresskill is great for us because it's convenient, quiet and they always greet and serve us with a smile. They have a cute but small outdoor setting and although the inside isn't as large as Westwood, its intimate and just perfect doe a quick dinner out on a weeknight or quiet lunch in a weekend. Food is always fresh and according to my boys, they have one of the best Gen Tsao in town. I've had their pad Thai and although kind of bland for me, it is plentiful and filling. Rolls, steamed dumplings and veggie spring rolls hit the spot when you just want to share around the table. If you are seeking regular chinese food then stick with your regular takeouts. If you want food that's fresher and want to kind of go out but not fine dining, this is the place for you! read more

Not usually in Cresskill but drove through with a friend and found this Hanami gem! The sushi was phenomenal... we had the Jennifer roll which had shrimp tempura, and for the first time in my sushi eating life, the tempura was actually warm! We thoroughly enjoyed their chicken and pine nut lettuce wrap - all perfectly diced and seasoned to perfection! Kudos to the chef who also served up orange beef - not my go-to entree but my friend wanted to try it. I was floored at the fragrant orange-y taste that wasn't the typical sliced beef. I had an amazing lunch at Hanami in Cresskill with my friends. I actually found out that this restaurant has been serving customers for over 25 years, which to me sounds like thousands of, if not millions of happy customers. The venue has a delightful patio for those who appreciate al fresco dining. And guess what? It's BYOB. I had lunch with three of my friends and we all truly enjoyed the variety the restaurant offers. They have so many great dishes, from sushi, sashimi, Chinese to noodles. One might think, maybe justifiably, that because of the wide variety of cuisines offered here, the quality would be mediocre at best. To my surprise, all the dishes I tried were amazing. Maybe my morning workout prior to lunch was one of the key "ingredients," in all seriousness, all the dishes were really delicious. My favorite dishes were the yellowtail sashimi, tuna pizza, and the General Tsos Tofu. The tofu wasn't too sweet or spicy; it was just right. The lo mein had a great portion (took home the leftover which my husband completely decimated) and the chicken with string beans was great as well. The chicken was so tender and the string beans were cooked to perfection. I can't forget about the fried shumai. I am not a big fan of fried shumai (I prefer steamed shumai) but this was different. It was so crispy and simply delicious. Of course, the service was amazing as well; probably another reason why it's been around for over 25 years. Hanami has been a neighborhood favorite for 26 years, and for good reasons. The extensive menu offers a full sushi and roll selections, from creative signature rolls to traditional sushi/sashimi entrees. The fish is very fresh and always presented very nicely. The sushi pizza is delicious, a great way to start a meal. The Hanami Roll is great too, wrapped in cucumber instead of rice. The restaurant also offers a large Chinese menu, from crowd favorites like Crispy Sesame Chicken and Sautéed Eggplant with Sweet Basil to more traditional dishes like Crispy Tender Half Duck and Filet Mignon with Black Pepper Sauce. Our first visit to Hanami since they left Englewood area many years ago. Was not disappointed. Relaxing and quiet outdoor dining, fresh clean food and friendly albeit choppy service. The blended Asian menu is great but I'd say you can get better sushi or better Chinese food from local places that dedicate to either of those cuisines. Shrimp and eggplant was very good, egg rolls were traditional and nice, the sushi rolls were good but a bit light on fish and heavy on rice and my eel hand roll was ok but the wrap was not toasted and lacked texture this classically has. BYO is always a plus for us. We'll likely include Hanami in our dining rotation looking ahead. read more

One of the worst Chinese takeout dinners I have had, ever! For $24 we got 4 small and rubbery shrimp with a mountain of broccoli and a grand mariner sauce on the side that was inedible. Then, the Pepper Steak was a container full of onions with almost no meat for $20. I ordered crispy tofu which was not crispy and was supposed to be in a white sauce, but it seemed to be sitting in oil. Also ordered Chicken Lo Mein, and they sent it with flat pad Thai noodles. Tasteless, overpriced and not at all what we were expecting. Terrible... We called to complain and were told that no one else complains. I had dinner here a couple of nights ago. I've been here before. The restaurant decor is nice enough but nothing special. The food is very good. I had wonton soup who h was very tasty if a little lacking in portion size. And I am very particular about my won ton soup! I had a nice California roll and a very tasty beef with onions and scallions main course. Everything was delicious. But the real treat for me was eating the special 2 person wonton soup I got to go! I just finished it after having it in the fridge for 2 days and it was spectacular! I'll be eating it in next time in house! I don't dine in at Hanami, mainly a take out choice for our family. Food arrives relatively quickly and service is good. Chinese food is very good, but we mainly get sushi. Quality of fish is good, but the sushi rice is hit or miss. Last nights rice on the sushi/sashimi combo and sushi deluxe had no flavor and pretty hard. If this was true sushi rice, it would be wonderful. We had basic rolls, eel and cucumber and yellow tail and scallion, tuna roll comes withe the sushi. Again, rice was disappointing but fish was fresh. I wish the tuna roll had small cuts of tuna, some pieces had such a large piece it was hard to chew. I came with six people to have a nice lunch family reunion. They serve two people a chicken dish with rice and one had gravy and one did not. When we asked for more gravy, the server yelled "four dollars extra!" Also the lunch sushi rolls were extremely small and the tempura rolls just had crusty breading in the center. I have been coming here with my girlfriends for years. It's a great BYOB that has a perfect combination of Sushi and Japanese meals. Every time my friends and I go...we always have a wonderful time and are always satisfied with our choices... Why I'm specifically writing this review, is that when you love Sushi the way I do and have 2 children that have not acquired the taste yet...it leaves you missing Sushi more than ever! We love the Hanami in Cresskill, NJ. Our family always went to the one in Westwood. They were good, but Cresskill much better. I don't like certain foods so they take out what I ask. They add extra sauce and items that I request. It's a little bit extra to add but I would expect that. My husband and I usually order take out on Sunday. We order online so this way I can make special requests. My meal last me for two and three days as leftovers since they give a much. Never had any problems except a few minor things. Haven't eaten in the restaurant yet but assume it's just as good as the take out. read more
