The lunch specials are a terrific value. The 3 for the price of 2 rolls is a great deal, and the taste of the salmon and tuna is fresh and savory. The rice is also prepared excellently with a good ratio to the sushi, not too much. There are some choices and combinations you normally do no see in specialty rolls including banana and mango, so there are new options to try. But the classic rolls are very good as well. The dine in experience feels a bit dark and a little cramped, but there are plenty of tables. And the friendly staff rounds out the meal. read more

My go to place for sushi when I am ordering in eastern Bergen County. Always fresh and delicious; would highly recommend.

This spot has been here for years and always the food is consistently good. My favorite is the teriyaki chicken dinner. They give you lots of chicken and it's always tender and juicy. The service is fast and the food is always cooked fresh. While I usually have takeout they do offer table service and they are very pleasant. It is byob so you can save some money by bringing your own beer or wine. The atmosphere is very nice and quiet with the place nicely decorated. read more

Every sushi place offers the "spicies" -- spicy tuna, spicy salmon, etc. Well-seasoned sushi enthusiasts avoid them because we all know why the added spice to the now mushed up seafood means. However, there are too many other wonderful things that Nihon Kai offers and their sashimi and sushi are simply excellent. Go. Or get delivery directly from Nihon Kai. Don't use those delivery apps. Got takeout from here and overall I thought the food was below average. I ordered a couple of sushi rolls, a mixed tempura appetizer, a kani salad, a tatsuta age, an agedashi tofu, and a beef teriyaki bento box. My biggest problem with the food was that none of the items tasted very fresh or authentic. I'm a huge fan of Japanese food and have traveled to Japan and eaten at some of the best Japanese restaurants in NJ/NY. So I have particularly discerning taste buds when it comes to Japanese food. Then they started serving fish that was on the cusp of going bad. I still recommended them and this co-worker will not let me forget how horrible the dept lunch was. I figured anyone can have an off night now and again. My last order a couple of weeks ago was back to good. Today? I ordered the salmon sushi entree with a spicy crunchy salmon roll. I threw my salmon sushi entree in the trash after a few bites. No crunchies, no spicy. I couldn't even tell it was salmon. The egg custard sushi tasted rancid. I ordered here for the first time because I was craving sushi, I ordered the California salad and the angel roll. For starters the salad was a nice cute presentation and I apologize I should've taken a picture before hand but I was really hungry. AnyWho the salad itself was delicious it was lettuce with shredded crab and avocados, they give you this bright orange salad dressing the only downside to the sauce is I'm used to Japanese restaurants giving you a ginger salad dressing and the dressing they gave really lacked flavor. Onto the Angel Roll, you get six rolls. Cute presentation however the flavor was severely lacking for me, honestly when I dipped the roll in soy sauce it tasted much better. I ate here on a whim and it was decently good! I came not expecting anything but I would go back, mainly because I liked their rolls. My favorite was the Manhattan roll which had great flavors. The sushi was also fresh. My only disappointment, in terms of food, was the sushi rolls weren't rolled tight enough so when I picked them up they fell apart. I basically had to eat my rolls like a chirashi. Otherwise, I really did love the freshness and the flavor a lot. I ordered another roll too that was also fresh but wasn't as memorable in terms of flavor. Service wise, it was ok. I came at a slow period where no one was there. I opted to sit at the bar. The chef was good about getting my order and serving me quickly but getting my drinks from a wait staff member seemed to take longer. Also, everyone seemed to be watching videos on their phone or texting which didn't make such a great impression. I'll have to come again and sit at a table to see how the service differs. The ambiance is small and cramp. Nothing to write home about. The real reason to come here is to try their fresh sushi, which is hard to come by in the New Milford/Bergenfield area. Small restaurant, always VERY quiet inside. I feel like I'm in a library and I will get shushed if I speak up every time I am there. But it's clean and very cute, with just a few tables and the sushi bar in the back. It's been around for a long time, I think - everything else is pretty lame on this Bergenfield main strip street, so if you're a sushi lover, don't pass up a few rolls at Nihon Kai! My sister and I used to come here all the time. I think I have tired ALL of their specialty rolls--they are fantastic, beautifully put together and FRESH. Super, super yummy and reasonably priced for the quality you are getting. The only reason I am not rating it 5 stars is because of the service - ALWAYS the same quiet and not very friendly waitress. (My sister speaks a bit of Mandarin and she would try to make small talk with the waitress sometimes and the waitress would just smile/laugh uncomfortably and respond in English. Kinda rude, if you ask me, but anyways, I guess it's a bit uncommon to hear a Westerner speak an Asian language?) Other than the service, YUMMY FOOD. The workers here 100% know me by now because when I first tried this place a couple weeks ago, I order the SAME EXACT THINGS on DoorDash. It's phenomenal every single time. First off, due to covid, the place is takeout only. Not pictured below, they don't even allow you to set foot inside and actually have a barrier at the front door so that whenever your order is ready, someone will come to you and give you your order through the screen. With sushi being the way it is, it typically takes forever to have it prepared, but for some reason, this place only takes 15 minutes max to prepare my large order (yes it's all for me). I've had little customer service interaction, but when I do, it's always nice and succinct. In regard to what I order, I'm a salmon lover, so everything I order has salmon in it. The Dancing Salmon is probably my favorite thing here. It's just salmon with avocado, I'm pretty sure lobster, and spicy mayo. There's definitely more, but it's an amazing dish and probably my favorite thing here. The Fantasy Roll has tempura salmon, avocado, and spicy mayo. Not many places have tempura salmon, so I love there's. The last one I always order is the Angry Dragon Roll, which is one of their specialties. It has shrimp tempura, avocado, king crab, nori (seaweed), eel sauce, grape oil sauce, and salmon. It's supposed to have tuna, but tuna is one of the few foods I don't like, so I sub it out for salmon and they always accommodate it. Since finding out about it, I've ordered from there 5 times and I will continue to do so. It's right around the corner from where I live, so it's nice to support a local spot. However, this has been here for longer than I can remember and with not many places staying open that long on Washington Ave, the fact that this place has stood the test of time shows how awesome it is. The worst we have ever had. My only guess is that it was a bad night in their kitchen because I can't understand all the good review. Sushi was so messy and completely covered in something I'm not even sure what it is. We ordered shrimp tempura and vegetable tempura and the batter was not cooked enough- it was mush - every single piece was very doughy. Miso soup was extremely salty. We were Looking for a good sushi place in the area and happy to say this is a wonderful discovery! As sushi lovers in Manhattan, we've had our share of good sushi and good Japanese food. So finding a good sushi place near where we live is a must! We ordered 8 types of rolls and we're pretty happy with all of them. Sushi is pretty good and generous. They put just the right amount of rice unlike other restaurants we've tried. Bento box was pretty good size and tasty too. The only negative was the shrimp tempura sauce as it was too watered down. They've been consistently getting worse in quality every time I order. I used to order from here a couple times a week and was never really disappointed, and never grossed out. I ordered about two weeks ago, the sashimi bento box, and let me start off by saying the vibes of the meal was basically ruined for me right off the bat because they neglected to include wasabi. Wasabi is absolutely necessary and I was immediately disappointed. Now, I'm not unreasonable. If the food I ordered had been fresh and delicious regardless, I wouldn't have cared so much about the omitted wasabi. However, the sashimi was not fresh. It was rubbery, zero flavor, and without wasabi to help me along I was really struggling. The gyoza was hard and rubbery too, didn't enjoy them as they tasted stale. Nothing was warm if it should have been, nothing was cold if it should have been. The salad (two pieces of lettuce and a tomato) was ok.... And then last night i ordered two rolls, salmon cucumber and rainbow, and they kept falling apart which is a sushi pet peeve of mine. My rainbow roll wasn't fully cut into pieces and made it difficult and kind of embarrassing to eat. Just sloppy. This is our local yocal sushi spot. its about a 10 min walk from my house so in the summer time we come here often. not my favorite sushi place but the food is still fantastic. I usually get the Bento box with beef or the hibachi platter with chicken. both come with soup and veggies. Bento comes with a sushi roll also. my spouse always gets the sashimi platter. at sushi places its all about the freshness. we have never had a complaint here. only thing is when we go here its usually dead. so if you live in bergenfield come out and support and let's keep This place in business. read more

I've been going to Nihon Kai for years and I've never been disappointed! I love sushi and I love trying different types and they offer a lot on their menu. The restaurant itself isn't that big but seating is no problem! Whenever I come they're very quick to take care of us regardless of how busy they are. Parking can be a bit tough. It's located on Washington Ave. so there's barely any parking on the street but there's public parking about a block away which isn't too bad. Also, they're probably the only sushi restaurant nearby who actually delivers which is a plus! read more

I don't see any other sushi place selling at these prices, without giving you food poisoning. Not to mention they are a healthier choice for the food desert it's located in. We were on our way to a Mexican place on S. Washington Ave when we realized the place was closed (or maybe out of business), so we decided to make a blind-choice; no reviews, no googling, just picked Nihon Kai and walked in. This was nearly 5 weeks ago. Since then, we've been back on a weekly basis. ROLLS: I forget the name of the specialty rolls, but the ones we've tried with salmon and tuna are delicious. I want to point out that while their specialty rolls are great, that's not what keeps us coming back. Their cheap single-fish rolls that range between $2.50-5.00 are surprisingly amazing. I'm talking about the typical ones that every local-suburban-non-Japanese-owned sushi restaurant serves: tuna roll, spicy salmon roll, etc. They are very simple, tightly wrapped, with VERY little rice, very little spicy mayo (if the roll requires it), and just overall CLEAN. You can be a sushi snob all you want, but this was refreshing in the overly saturated market of mayo-tempura-crunch-5-fish-artisanal-rolls that you can't fit into your mouth. My favorite is the spicy salmon roll (not the spicy tuna), tuna roll, and mackerel/ginger roll. APPETIZERS: Try their appetizers. I've had the tuna tataki and some kind of seaweed-encased flash-fried salmon roll topped with a medley of bonito flakes, shredded seaweed, imitation crab (small slivers), roe, and spicy mayo/hoisin sauce. Other places in the area: We've given East in Teaneck a few tries and have been disappointed each time. Sushi Village in Westwood is great if you feel like eating a buttload of sashimi without spending a fortune. Dairuma in Englewood is good for date night or when you're in the mood for some funky asian-fusion rolls with fresh fish. Needless to say, this is our new cheap casual weeknight sushi spot in Bergen County. I think we even rang up a $100 bill one night (between the two of us). Considering the menu's relatively low price point, take this as a sign that this place is delicious and that we have the appetites of a baby dinosaur. read more

Yum yum yum! I came in for lunch and ordered the bento box with chicken teriyaki, calamari and spicy tuna roll. I loved every bite of it. The chicken was on spot. The perfect balance of contrasting sauce, chicken and veggies. The calamari were great too. Fried to perfection and soo fresh. The savory chili sauce brought it all together. I took a risk based on one review. The place was pretty empty for a Friday evening, which is particularly not a good sign for a sushi place. But this is more of a local place than a destination place and the main street of Bergenfield isn't exactly a happening place on a Friday evening. My hubby and I ordered three rolls. One was spicy tuna with eel on top, can't recall the name. It starts with R, and something like raizin? It was ok but I didn't really get any spiciness from the spicy tuna but the eel was great. The other roll was phoenix roll - cucumber, tuna, avocado and salmon. It was pretty good although I was a bit surprised at just how red the tuna was. However, it tasted fairly fresh. Third roll was the Try Me roll, fried yellow tail with avocado. I thought it might be a good alternative to the spider roll (fried soft crab) which we always get for some reason but not end up liking too much. The Try Me roll was ok but the mayo was a bit off-putting, but it wasn't bad but not something I would order again. Well, we weren't quite full so we figured we'll order another roll, something small. So we asked for a spicy tuna roll and I requested extra spicy. It was not a good sign when the roll came and the tuna looked rather whitish pink than red. When I picked up the roll, I saw mayo oozing out of the roll. In fact, there was so much mayo in the roll that it tasted like I was eating tuna fish salad roll. YUCK! To top it off, it tasted fishy, like that canned tuna fish fishiness. I guess their spicy tuna sauce is mayo sauce with a bit of hot pepper or sauce (can't hardly taste it), so when I asked for extra spicy, the sushi chef just added more mayo sauce. Unfortunately, that last roll totally ruined the entire dining experience because we left the place with fishy aftertaste in our mouth. I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because the staff is very nice and attentive. The other rolls weren't bad but I've had comparable rolls elsewhere with far superior spicy tuna rolls. I don't think I'll go back there again. I love spicy tuna and I can't go to a place that can't make decent spicy tuna. We couldn't wait to get home to brush our teeth and chew some gum to get that fishy-tuna-mayo taste out of our mouth. read more

I was here on a Sunday night and it was empty, which is never a good sign. I was the only person sitting in there while waiting for my friend to arrive and felt SO awkward. I couldn't figure out why but my friend walled in and immediately commented on the lack of any kind of music playing! It was really odd eating dinner by ourselves in a silent restaurant.. The sushi was okay. Not terrible not the best. I had the sushi sashimi platter and it was minimally fishy. Thicker cuts of fish than you see at some places. My friend is a basic sushi bitch (still love you!) and enjoys spicy tuna/salmon rolls hahaha but they were still good. The spicy salmon were actually a piece of fish with spicy mayo which was surprising and nice. He also got a roll that had cooked and deep-fried salmon in it.. do not get. We picked that one apart and just ate the insides. Service was also...really awkward. The girl serving us seemed like she never put a plate down on a table in her life. She couldn't figure out where to put our plates down and we took them out of her hands and helped her. She also spoke in a whisper which was weird. I didn't feel like running home and brushing the fishy taste out of my mouth immediately so they had that going for them. But I'm a sushi snob so I'm a tough grader. Probably won't go back again bc its a bit out of the way for me but not bad if you're in Bergenfield! For the price though it's too expensive (80$ roughly including tip) when it tastes about the same as sushi village.... BY THE WAY. Ordered from here the other day because I was unable to order from my usual sushi place. I called on the phone beforehand to make sure that the sushi was fresh and they told me if was fresh. But when I received my order the sushi was not fresh. To top it off the miso soup smelled like microwave. If you know what the tastes like it the most unpleasant taste and smell. Awful. Not sure if it's because the reviewers have never tasted fresh or even close to fresh fish before to tell the difference, however I am in utter shock by these decent reviews. I used to order from here all the time and it's sad to say the quality of the fish has gone down tremendously. Last couple of times I ordered, I could smell the sushi from the delivery bag and eventually had to throw it out after a very forced bite. I grew up in New York City eating sushi and it's needless to say plain raw tuna should absolutely NOT have any odor whatsoever - this tuna STINKS, big time. And to top it off, the avocado in my sushi was also black... how is this acceptable? It's a shame I had to toss it out. I'm sorry, I am definitely not ordering from here again. Let me just start off by saying we have never dined there, but it has become the only place I will order sushi from. Their prices are fantastic, their rolls are easily $2 less than some of the flashy sushi places in Englewood where we live, but are just as good. We are a family of 4, 3 of whom eat sushi, so we can order 7 or 8 rolls among us, so it can really add up. Plus they are quite good, certainly comparable to any other sushi I have had in the area. I have had some of their other items too, like the chicken teriyaki, udon and soups. All were very good, and also much less expensive than the other places on the area for equal quality fiid.
