    Spicy green pepper with steak

River Edge, NJ - Wang's is a Chinese restaurant with a regional focus on Hunan cuisine, along with serving up your typical American-Chinese standards. It is similar to Sichuan/Szechuan cuisine in ways, in that there is an emphasis on spicy foods, although the spice profiles differ. It is in the space formerly occupied by a different Chinese restaurant called Joyce (RIP - I loved and miss their short-lived foray into seafood boils). Although there are many great authentic (meaning regionally specialized) Chinese restaurants in Bergen County and northern NJ, including several Sichuan places, this is the only Hunan one I'm aware of (without venturing further south into NJ), and is certainly one of the nicest Chinese restaurants atmosphere-wise, with an elegant dining room. If you want to try the interesting and authentic dishes, of which there are plenty, order from the sections of the menu labeled with "Hunan" or "Home Style." The soups and cold appetizers are very traditional too. The house speciality is the Hunan steamed fish head with pickled chili - the platter is quite impressive and takes 20-30 min to prepare. You can add tofu (recommended) or noodles for an additional $5. We ordered this but since I'm not a fish head fan (and like my fish very simply dressed) - I think it was a type of carp - the appreciation for it was lost on me. It's topped with a heap of red chilis but is actually not as spicy as it looks. Personally I prefer the fish fillet dishes such as the fish with ginger, which has very tender filet slices. I loved the soup dumplings (large and soupy), shrimp with salted egg yolk (or any salted egg yolk dishes, which aren't easy to find), and enjoyed the tender sautéed beef dishes like beef with spring onion or the spicy green pepper with steak, with crunchy peppers that give a piquant refreshing kick. They have whole Peking duck (Beijing roast duck)! The menu only shows pricing for the whole duck but we asked for half and they obliged. To be honest it's not the best Peking duck I've had but the balance of crispy skin (that's yet not too fatty) to generously shaved lean duck meat was unimpeachable. And they use high-quality crepes that are superbly thin but do not tear. The lo mein is also pretty good - it's slightly smoky and is better than common. Parking tip: there are only a few spots in front but there is a parking lot in the back of the building with plenty of spaces. There are lots of exciting and exotic menu offerings and still many we'd like to try, so we'll be back repeatedly.

If you're a fan of classic Chinese banquet-style dining and have been loyal to Aquarius in Fort Lee, Wang's Chinese Cuisine is a great alternate option. One standout for me was their Cold Chicken in Chili Oil--a perfect appetizer to start with. The chicken was tender, the chili oil aromatic but not overpowering, and it had just the right balance of heat and savory flavor. I can definitely vouch for it. We also tried their Steamed Fish Head with Tofu, one of their specialty dishes. Not only was it done well, but the portion was impressively large, making it ideal for sharing with a group. The fish was fresh, delicately cooked, and paired nicely with the silky tofu. That said, the beef sautéed dish missed the mark for me. The flavor was solid, but the beef itself was too chewy, which took away from the overall experience of the dish. The tea they provided was very watered down as well, practically water. Overall, while I would still give the edge to Aquarius when it comes to the entrees, Wang's is definitely worth visiting if you're in the area.

I'm a huge fan of authentic Chinese food so after moving to the area, I was hoping this would be my new go-to spot. However, I think my search will still continue. Tucked away in the Kinderkamack plaza sits this joint. Since it's a small area with tons of stores, the parking can be a little limited but most of the time you should be able to find a spot. The restaurant itself is quite spacious inside, I think this was remodeled from the old Joyce restaurant. Because of the location my family frequents this place often and have tried several dishes. However, I have yet to find one that stands out and often try something different every time. Most of the dishes tend to be very sauce heavy and overpowers the flavor of the food. Additionally, there are not many tofu items on the menu here which makes things more difficult if you're vegetarian. The food certainly isn't bad by any means and it's entirely possible I may just haven't found what they do best yet. Presentation of the food is good as you can see. Service is not where they shine either. Most of the staff only speaks Chinese so you may have some trouble having your questions clarified. Additionally when ordering take-out, I've had my orders messed up on multiple occasions without any willingness to correct it. Portion sizes are decent but the pricing is steep, you'll be paying a lot more here compared to what you'd get at other Chinese spots. I think I'd be okay with this if the quality was better but overall I'd say this is just okay.

    Sesame chicken

I picked up meal for dinner and disappointed. Sesame Chicken was very hard, dry and weird texture. Pick up place or food court make much better one. Tiny spring rolls(came with 4, menu said 2) were just like the frozen ones from Asian market. Mapo tofu taste was not something I expected (my kid said taste like spicy margarita pizza, and I agreed with it). I was excited that I could try authentic Chinese food from actual restaurant but disappointed especially with this price. I wouldn't go back.

I've been to this restaurant a few times since they opened a few months ago, taking over the space formerly occupied by Joyce Chinese restaurant. The Hunan cuisine is fantastic, offering a great variety of dishes that make it ideal for dining with a large group, so you can try more of the menu. The standout dish for me was the fish head with tofu, perfectly spiced to balance flavor and heat. My second favorite was the tender braised pork belly, which was full of rich flavor. The string beans with eggplant are also a must-have, and you really can't go wrong with any of the appetizers. Recently, I had the pleasure of celebrating a birthday dinner here. We had made a reservation for a large group, and when we arrived, we noticed that the two private rooms were not occupied. We asked if we could use one of the private rooms, and the staff quickly and graciously accommodated us. They set up the room for us with impressive speed, and they didn't require a dining minimum, which is unusual for most restaurant!! This making the evening feel even more special. It was the perfect setting for a celebratory meal with good friends!! The service is always attentive, and the ambience remains casual yet inviting. Prices are very reasonable for their portion, and is a BYOB, making it a great spot for both regular visits and special occasions!

Great dinner at Wang's last night! It can get crowded so make sure to call in advance and get a reservation. It felt like a buzzing neighborhood hot spot. This place is new, authentic, and has great food + service. Not the most kid-friendly in terms of the menu options but soup dumplings were so good! This place is BYOB - feel free to bring your favorite wine/beer to pair with your meal.

7/13/24 Always on the lookout for a good Chinese restaurant. And they are really good! Nice big space. Different sections, there are booths and tables and large tables with lazy susans. So many delicious dishes. We're only 2 so we ordered 1 dish each and plan to go back to try others. So good we went back a week later hehehe Scallion Pancake - crispy! This was very good, we ordered a second one. Stir Fried Pig Feet - ok we did not except such small pieces of pig feet but it's so good! 2 pepper sign is so spicy. Sizzling Hot Plate Duck - oh delicious! Tender duck over a bed of veggies. My favorite! Green Pepper Century Eggs - spicy but good, I think it's like a jalapeño pepper too spicy to eat directly. I avoided eating the pepper then it was less spicy. Smoked Pork with Garlic Sprouts - this is really good, I only wish the pork was more tender. General Tsos Chicken - generic Singapore Fried Rice - this was different, love Singapore Mei Fun, but never had it as rice, but it's good. We saw another table get a big bowl, and we asked what it was, fish head soup. Definitely coming back in cooler weather to try it!

Went for a Saturday lunch at the newly renovated restaurant. There were lots of table available, we didn't have to wait at all to get seated. The restaurant is beautiful, capturing elements of the Chinese culture. I loved the ceiling lights that have Chinese characters and symbols marked in them. The menu is huge, about 12 pages. We ordered several items among which Singaporean fried rice was my favorite. Had a mix of shrimp, chicken, egg, with quality rice. The cucumber with garlic sauce was excellent too. Other items like mixed seafood with vegetables, popcorn chicken and egg with minced pork were average to me. Service wise they are really good, really friendly staff. They packed our left overs. Food came out pretty quick too. Overall a decent family dining location.

Not bad for a sit-down dine in Chinese restaurant. Food is good. I like the popcorn chicken and Stir Fried Pea Shoots with garlic. Service is good. But inside the restaurant there's a smell I can't describe.

This is a high end Asian restaurant specializing in Hunan authentic cuisine. There choices cater to specialized dishes favored by their clientele. You will not find standard American Chinese food like most take out places. If you're searching for unique and authentic food this is the place. Want beef with broccoli or lo mein and egg rolls this ain't your place.

Steam fish head is soooo good, very fresh but not too spicy, highly recommended it!

Best Human cuisine in the town, love it! Definitely will come back again! I tried the steam fish head and lobster, they both very fresh and tasty, worthy to drive all the way from Manhattan!

Wang's actually is a Hunan style restaurant also providing typical Sichuan food, spicy and delicious from a Chinese taste. This is the third time I came here since last month, it always comes in my mind first to come when there is close friend's visit even it is 45 minutes drive.

NY Strip Steak Cheeseburger & Fries Here is the novelty regarding all of these appetizing entrees; they were all prepared from a Chinese take out restaurant! While most of the double sided menu offers Asian cuisine, there is one section specifically geared for American dishes! And the best part is it all tastes fantastic! The starters are on par. They taste identical to what you'd get served at a pub. The cheeseburger was a juicy, giant patty served on a brioche bun. The burger exceeds a Quarter Pounder in terms of taste and size! The steak was also decent, but make sure you have your favorite bottle of steak sauce handy! It's not Longhorn quality, but you'll still get your money's worth and will be satisfied. The calamari was more chewy than crispy, but it wasn't the worst I've had. In fact, it tastes better when I re-heated it in the oven for my preferred level of crispiness. There isn't any indoor seating, so take their outdoor sign literally. If you are looking for delicious non-Asian dishes at reasonable prices at a Chinese spot, this is the place to go.

General Tso's Chicken Dinner Combo: The hot, spicy chicken is chewy on the inside while slightly crunchy on the outside; expect a mild kick. I'm satisfied broccoli was included, but my only critique is that I would have preferred that the vegetable was mixed in with the tangy sauce. Also included with this combo is pork fried rice and wonton soup. The three wontons and the broth were piping hot. The noodles go hand in hand with the soup. It is a win win whether you choose to have them dry or soaked. Boneless Spare Ribs Dinner Combo: The ribs are tender and chewy with a savory taste. For this combo, I explored the white rice and egg roll. This appetizer was filled with cabbage and ground pork. I enjoyed it, but the size of the egg roll could have been slightly larger with a tad bit more pork. Both combos can also be purchased as a lunch special if you arrive between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
