It is similar to Sichuan/Szechuan cuisine in ways, in that there is an emphasis on spicy foods, although the spice profiles differ. It is in the space formerly occupied by a different Chinese restaurant called Joyce (RIP - I loved and miss their short-lived foray into seafood boils). Although there are many great authentic (meaning regionally specialized) Chinese restaurants in Bergen County and northern NJ, including several Sichuan places, this is the only Hunan one I'm aware of (without venturing further south into NJ), and is certainly one of the nicest Chinese restaurants atmosphere-wise, with an elegant dining room. If you want to try the interesting and authentic dishes, of which there are plenty, order from the sections of the menu labeled with "Hunan" or "Home Style." The soups and cold appetizers are very traditional too. The house speciality is the Hunan steamed fish head with pickled chili - the platter is quite impressive and takes 20-30 min to prepare. You can add tofu (recommended) or noodles for an additional $5. We ordered this but since I'm not a fish head fan (and like my fish very simply dressed) - I think it was a type of carp - the appreciation for it was lost on me. It's topped with a heap of red chilis but is actually not as spicy as it looks. Personally I prefer the fish fillet dishes such as the fish with ginger, which has very tender filet slices. I loved the soup dumplings (large and soupy), shrimp with salted egg yolk (or any salted egg yolk dishes, which aren't easy to find), and enjoyed the tender sautéed beef dishes like beef with spring onion or the spicy green pepper with steak, with crunchy peppers that give a piquant refreshing kick. They have whole Peking duck (Beijing roast duck)! The menu only shows pricing for the whole duck but we asked for half and they obliged. To be honest it's not the best Peking duck I've had but the balance of crispy skin (that's yet not too fatty) to generously shaved lean duck meat was unimpeachable. And they use high-quality crepes that are superbly thin but do not tear. The lo mein is also pretty good - it's slightly smoky and is better than common. Parking tip: there are only a few spots in front but there is a parking lot in the back of the building with plenty of spaces. There are lots of exciting and exotic menu offerings and still many we'd like to try, so we'll be back repeatedly.

I haven't been to many Szechuan Chinese restaurants but Hot Fish is easily the best Chinese food in NJ by a long shot. I'm vegetarian so can't comment on meat dishes but the salt & pepper tofu is out of this world (though if you get it via takeout be mindful of the white doily-style round paper on the bottom of the plastic container which I assume is there to soak up excess oil, but is not edible). I'm going to Hot Fish for takeout today and will be getting the salt & pepper tofu dish as well as their Kung Pao tofu which I'm excited to try. The garlic flavored broccoli is spectacular and may be my favorite dish. It somehow tastes even better reheated the next day (the sauce probably gets absorbed more). Ordering at least two of those -- the garlic sauce used in it is truly unique and remarkably delectable. If you're not a fan of mushrooms you need to request no "fungus" as that's how they refer to mushrooms. The veggie fried rice is as good as I've ever had and I love that it's served white rather than the typical soy sauce stained brown fried rice that's much more common. The egg & scallion fried rice is also wonderful and doesn't contain any fungus, unlike the veggie fried rice. Be sure to try the marinated cucumber appetizer. It has a warm, numbing spice to it and is absolutely fantastic. Edemame is good. Sauteed green beans are remarkably good -- almost as good as the garlic broccoli. Come to think of it, I haven't had a bad dish yet. Or even one that wasn't above average. This place is legitimately amazing. Authentic, consistent, and an exceptional dining experience. If I could better express just how much I love the food at Hot Fish I would, I simply lack the descriptive language needed to properly convey just how wonderful the flavor combinations and perfectly textured veggies and tofu taste and leave you feeling after the meal is finished. The chef(s) and kitchen staff are truly talented and consistent, the latter being extremely important as most people want to have the same dish when they find one they love and return to the restaurant again. Inconsistency can really hurt a restaurant and one's desire to eat there again. My only criticism is that Hot Fish isn't closer to my home, because I would genuinely like to eat their at least once a week if not more but since it's over 30 minutes away it makes eating their regularly more difficult. But it has always been well worth the trip. So glad this place opened -- it's the best Chinese food in the NYC/NJ area and has quickly become my favorite restaurant. I'm surprised the current Yelp rating is only 4.2/5.0, though that is very good score and you can't please everyone especially with spicy food which some Americans just aren't accustomed to. I'm interested in how the rating will change over time since they've been open for less than a year. The photo is of salt & pepper tofu and you can see the white doily I mentioned earlier, though with takeout its almost completely hidden when th container is full. While I haven't eaten there myself, my family has and they said the food is even better when you eat there and remarked that the atmosohere is very nice, clean, comfortable, and doesn't have any obnoxious attributes like extremely loud music or lighting so faint you can't see your food. All in all a wonderful addition to the Bergen county food scene and a blessing for those who DO like it HOT (spicy)!

They taste identical to what you'd get served at a pub. The cheeseburger was a juicy, giant patty served on a brioche bun. The burger exceeds a Quarter Pounder in terms of taste and size! The steak was also decent, but make sure you have your favorite bottle of steak sauce handy! It's not Longhorn quality, but you'll still get your money's worth and will be satisfied. The calamari was more chewy than crispy, but it wasn't the worst I've had. In fact, it tastes better when I re-heated it in the oven for my preferred level of crispiness. To start, they got our order wrong, ok...It happens, but it all went downhill from there. The Sesame Chicken was completely overdone, it was like shoe leather, it's usually outstanding. It had about four sesame seeds on it. We asked for it extra spicy, and it didn't have even a hint of spice. They were supposed to send Beef with garlic sauce, instead they sent some absolutely tasteless chicken dish with what looked like boiled tiny strips of chicken with some vegetables and a TON of that gross baby corn. It was flavorless. We got the combos, so they came over pork fried rice and an egg roll. The rice was mealy, mushy and flavorless. We usually love their rice, it tasted entirely different. There was nothing fried about it, hands down worst pork fried rice I've ever had. The egg roll was hard and greasy with just cabbage inside. Again flavorless. The boneless ribs were just ok, nothing like how they usually are. They are usually very tender and flavorful. These were lacking flavor and fatty. The Wonton soup was completely different as well. What are usually pillowy soft wontons, were thick and gummy. The broth tasted like bath water. So the entirety of our meal tasted NOTHING like the Empire we know and love. This is so disappointing. The same thing happened with Chen's Yummy House. Every time that we find a great place, they change hands and it goes to crap. I just figured I'd warn everyone that this place is NOT the same. I thought maybe they just had a bad night, but I looked at recent Google reviews before posting this, and I see a similar complaint. This was so bad that I don't even think I'll give them another chance for redemption. Every single component of our meal sucked, and we were out $50.

I actually like this system because at traditional dim sum restaurants you often spend more time waiting for carts or servers than eating. One thing that really impressed me was the cleanliness. The restaurant isn't newly renovated, but it's well maintained. After each table left, the staff cleaned with fresh sanitizing wipes instead of using the same cloth over and over. They also serve everything with disposable plates and utensils, which personally gives me more confidence than reusable tableware that isn't always cleaned thoroughly. The food was consistently good. The lotus leaf sticky rice was fragrant, the rice noodle roll with fried dough had a great texture, and the Teochew dumplings were generously filled. The standout dish was the stuffed trio. The shrimp paste was fresh and springy, the fried tofu was crispy, and getting eggplant, tofu, and green pepper on one plate made it easy to try a little of everything.
