Possibly some of the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten. Beef fried rice that was horrible. The beef was dry and the rice was bright yellow and mushy. Either they used yellow rice or added a spice that made it that color. No soy at all. Just mushy yellow drek. The beef lo mein was essentially the same except it wasn't lo mein noodles. It looked like spaghetti only, again, bright yellow with, again, dried beef and not many vegetables. It was overly sticky, and cold. I live four minutes away and opened it as soon as I got home. The person at the counter was nasty as well. Told me my card didn't work. I said yes it did since I'd just used it. She said no it doesn't but I told her to try it again. I watched and she was inserting it the wrong way. It worked, she shoved the card through the plastic sheeting they have up with my receipt and just said "sign." No thank you. 'peking house' in hillsdale, nj is now our family's absolute favorite place to order chinese style food at...they're a tiny place for take-out only but they are a stand out among a bunch of other chinese style food places around here for quality and taste of their food, as well as quick service... 2 days ago I've just used their website to place an advanced order for the first time since we started to use them a few years back and i'm going to start placing my orders via this method more often...it allows me to include some basic additional food preparation requests in writing [instead of having to include such over the phone in a hurried manner over the loud din on the other side of the receiver] and they followed each request to a 't' sans any extra charge... I ordered 'roast pork fried rice', 'boneless spare ribs', 'roast pork with mixed vegetables' and chef's special 'double cooked pork' entree... I requested options such as including extra water chestnut slices [I love those crunchy things] but eliminating green peppers, carrots and broccoli... I also asked for well done pork in both entrees and the fried rice on the drier side since I don't like moist fried rice.... since I absolutely abhore the taste and smell of garlic I also automatically include the 'no garlic!!!...' request in any of my chinese food order just in case a particular place uses garlic in their take on a recipe dish... all food came delivered as I've requested, tender, non-fatty and done as I asked, and not a single green pepper/carrot/broccoli in sight but had plenty of my water chestnut slices instead... the boneless spare ribs were lean and tender not partially fatty with gristle as is often the case at other chinese take outs; ditto re-pork in other entrees...they included 2 small containers of hot/spicy oil as well, just as requested.... the delivery was in fact a bit early by a few minutes from my specified time... our previous go-to chinese style food place was the 'golden dynasty' restaurant in hillsdale on kinderkamack rd but their food and service quality took a significant drop within the past few years so we had to find a replacement...happily, the 'peking house' popped up on our radar right around the same time and very close to us as well... they do take out only but our family prefers to eat in rather than dine out most of the time anyway... well done p.h. and keep up the good job... read more

I have been ordering from Peking house since 2004 when it was owned by "Jimmy" and have counted my family and myself as faithful and regular customers. This is a relationship which I have decided must end today. The new owners have ruined dishes by refusing to make dishes to order as requested. The last 4 times I have ordered, the entrée has been dry, flavorless and reminiscent of food court Chinese food at a mall. When I opened an order of General Tso's at home after picking it up as I never use delivery to ensure food is hot and fresh, the food was dry and undercooked. I called and politely mentioned that the dish was not cooked as it has been ordered, explained nicely how I would like the dish prepared in the future to avoid a repeat of the issue and promptly forgot about it. The same result was provided for the same dish the 2nd time I ordered after the new owners took over, I politely expressed my dissatisfaction and let it go again without further action or request for the food to be remade. The 3rd time I placed an order for General Tso's chicken, while still at the restaurant I decided to double check the entrée only to find it was again completely dry. I pointed out the dryness of the dish and was advised by the owner that the sauce was just thick and I should go home and put water in it...... Seriously????? Did I learn my lesson? Of course not, and I returned on another dat to order an entirely different dish with chicken and mixed vegetables with entirely predictable results. The entrée consisted of rubbery and undercooked chicken with less than 1/8 of a cup of sauce in the dish. The vegetables alone would provide the same amount of liquid after being sautéed with salt and sweating while being cooked. The house rice is undercooked and should be described as al dente to be kind. While al dente is a desirable attribute in pasta, rice leaves something to be desired in this state. I was under the impression that a rice cooker was nearly foolproof and I have been able to correct another serious misconception in my culinary education. Kudos to the anonymous rice preparer from the restaurant as I have learned something new and will no longer assume that water + rice + timer set correctly in a rice cooker = properly cooked rice. While the options for Chinese food in the Hillsdale area are not numerous, ANY choice you make is better than the Peking house in 2016. If I could give 0 stars, I would as it would be a well deserved rating. Due to the apparent logic by Yelp that the business earns 1 star just for opening their doors and simply cannot DESERVE the single beacon of lighted failure in the art of cooking, I suppose 1 star will have to suffice. It is with a heavy heart I write this review about the downfall of a once decent Chinese food establishment. For many years, while being in NJ, I had frequented this place to get fast, cheap food that tasted pretty good. That was then, this is now. It is like a completely different place. Where should I begin? Rather than harping on the glorious days of the past, let's focus on the now. First of all, flavors. I've had quite a bit of different dishes here and they range in taste from bland to terrible. A basic dish like chicken and broccoli is lacking sauce making it a bit dry and flavorless. The sauce is one of the most important parts of the dish. General Tso's is sloppy and fatty chicken and big stalks of uncooked broccoli taking up space with inconsistent flavor. Sometimes too spicy, sometimes barely spicy. The pork fried rice over the years has had a dramatic increase in onions. I'm pretty sure I could pick out all the bits of onion and form a full one. I wish I could say there is a dish I could recommend since I've had things all across the menu, but nowadays, I cannot. Second, reliability. Half of the time, you don't get the food you ordered. There is a white burned out looking dude there that I assume handles their deliveries on busy nights. A word of warning, if he answers the phone to take your order, assume the order will be incorrect. It has happened to me at least 5 times. Even if you ask him to read it back, it will be wrong when you get it. This is particularly true with things that are similar or at least sound similar. If you order something like boneless spare ribs, you will get BBQ spare ribs. Every. Friggin. Time. This is an epic mistake. Boneless spare ribs can be a meal, BBQ spare ribs are not even fit for your dog. They are just big bones without any meat on them. Why would someone order BBQ ribs ever? Why is it even on the menu? But I digress. Main point, they should ban this guy from taking orders. He clearly can't handle it. It is sad that this place went downhill, but that is what happened. I hope that they change their ways, but sadly, I will never return to find out. The last 4 times, I've been overly disappointed with them on all levels. They are just not worth my time, money, or energy being pissed off at another bad or incorrect meal anymore. I have been noticing a trend regarding take-out orders on Friday and Saturday evenings. The portions tend to be significantly smaller, not overall, just the protein. I ordered quite the number of dishes from here but in each case the amount of meat, chicken and shrimp was minimal. The duck actually only had three pieces of meat along with 4 pieces of fatty skin. One day a friend of mine mentioned to me that it's gotten a million times better than when I had gone years ago. I figured they couldn't be wrong and so I gave it a shot. Well, this is now a definitely go to place for Chinese, the fact that they get crowed late into a Saturday evening is impressive in and of itself.
