When I moved back to HNL almost 10 years ago, after being away almost 20 years I needed a recommendation for a hair stylist that specialized in cut & color for ASIAN hair; after owning a salon for 10 years myself on the mainland even though I'm NOT a stylist, I've learned the subtle differences things like hair types and products make. Thankfully a recommendation from a dear friend who's also a makeup artist to her own stylist was THE perfect fit, and I've never looked back. Mei is the owner of M-irror salon, and while I believe she specializes in the perfect Cut based on your hair and face shape, her color skill is undeniably one of the best I've seen; in fact, her ability to work with clients to blend their natural color with the style and look they want is exactly what makes her the perfect balance for a GREAT stylist. At this point, if I were to move back to the mainland, I'd want to STILL come back and at LEAST have some of my hair appointments with MEI. It's a great salon, I've taken both my boys to have their own hair cut by her stylists, and I've even watched her train others along the way with clients. Still loving the look and service at M-irror salon!! My stylist is Yama (fabulous!) but have been to Mei too (also fabulous!). Parking is right in front of the building (weekday mornings are best) and a little scary with the main road, so make sure you pull in as much as you can. The bathroom is shared on the outside of the building. Ok so those are the only two negatives about this place. Does all the positives outweigh those things? Absolutely! The salon is always clean and bright. They're always on time. Yama seems to read my mind on what I want and works his magic. When my hair grows out, I love every stage of it! He advises you!! I want certain trendy styles, but he knows me too, and lets me know I have to commit to every 6 weeks to maintain the look (high and low lights). He advised me against bangs LOL again that I have to come back every few weeks to trim them. He knows and isn't pushing to make more sales. He doesn't go against my nature of wanting low to no maintenance grooming. He knows I come once a year to chop it off and straighten again and that's it. i waited three months to write this because I wanted to see how my hair would look after a digital perm from yama. i can safely say it's still amazing! i had really long, straight, fine, never-dyed hair before. yama cut my hair in layers beautifully and the digital perm gave it a ton of volume and bounce. the process was really straightforward and took about two hours. yama was also kind enough to show me how to style and dry my hair. the salon was nice enough to accommodate my request to change my haircut into a digital perm and haircut. i really cannot recommend this salon enough; the price was reasonable and I would love to come back the next time I'm in hawaii. read more

She does a great job at tailoring the cut/color around your desired hair lifestyle. She usually has an assistant helping her to expedite parts of the color and wash process. I'm really hair-dumb, so I just went in and asked for a haircut and a digital perm, but I didn't have any pictures of what I wanted, so she really had nothing to work with. But she asked me a few questions, showed me a photo of something that would look great for me, and in the end, it all came out so much better than anything I could've imagined. I love her! It's been awhile since I colored my hair. In January, made an appointment with Cla, stylist for balayage coloring. I showed her 2 pictures: lavender balayage and milk tea balayage. After looking at the pictures, she told me it would take 2 sessions to achieve the color I want no matter which look I was going for. I decide to do that and go with milk tea balayage due my work (healthcare). First they bleach my hair, then process it for about 25 mins. Wash off and she did a quick toner so prevent brassy colors before the next session. Styled my hair and curled before I left the salon. The 2nd session, I had to bleach my hair once again and let it process for 25 minutes. After washing, the permanent toner was applied to my hair. Saran wrap was put over my hair and wait about 15 minutes, then wash once more. When they wash your hair, they give you relaxing scalp massage. She and the assistant blow dried my hair, it was styled with light curls. Milk tea color was subtle but also gorgeous. It represents my love for milk tea. If you are looking for a hair makeover, I suggest seeing Cla. She is sweet and a hair wiz. read more

I absolutely love getting my hair done with Mei. She had never disappointed me ever, she alway delivered beautiful results. When I first came to Mei for my hair session, I asked her to do what I desired. She said to me: "I can do it for you but it's going to damage your hair, I'd rather you take a few sessions and slowly progress." Well, I'll tell you I didn't like that. For my Dot's first experience with a salon treatment, we definitely picked the right place! After consulting with Yama about Dot's super fine, really dry, waist-length, unkempt hair, we decided to try a keratin treatment. Yes, it's pricey - especially for long hair - but with tangles-as-soon-as-you-brush-it hair like Dot's, keratin seemed the way to go. Yama even convinced her to cut half a foot off! That, in and of itself, was a small miracle. During the 3-hour process, Yama also let me sit in the adjacent chair, which was great since I had work to do on my laptop. In the end, my Dot was happy with the length, look and feel of her hair. And her smile - plus elimination of my daily admonitions to brush her hair - makes it worth the cost. Now, I just need to find me a side job so we can afford to do this again in six months! read more

As visitors from the mainland, I kept debating if I should just wait until I get back home to see my regular stylist OR take the risk with someone new in Hawai'i lol. My daughter and I were both overdue for a haircut/trim. Our hair was in desperate need of a refresher especially being in the sun for hours at the beach. M-irror is the only upscale salon in Honolulu that I continue to return to and trust to get my hair cut, straightened, and deep conditioned. Your hair will be in safe hands with stylist Yama-Chan. I've seen him for a Japanese straight perm as well as for hair cuts and the 5 step moisture treatment. Yama-Chan is talented with doing all types of hair textures and he is very friendly. I have complained in my other Yelp reviews about often being overcharged at hair salons. I have never felt that way about Yama-Chan. M-irror is a high-end salon but Yama-Chan charges a fair price and never overcharges. The menu states that a women cut is $70, and he charges me $70, unlike other salons where I've been charged $30+ more than the listed price. M-irror is the best salon in Honolulu for a Japanese straight perm. This salon only uses premium Japanese hair products and the results are excellent. My hair turned out to be very straight, soft, and damage free from the straight perm. I went to M-irror this month so that Yama-Chan could give me a short haircut that would give me a breezier hairstyle for the hot and humid summer. I have received many compliments for my new shorter hairstyle! Despite the haircut, I still had some breakage from a bad relax job done at another hair salon, so I decided to get the 5 step moisture treatment with scalp treatment. M-irror uses Milbon hair products from Japan for hair and scalp treatments. I almost immediately noticed a difference in my hair texture. My hair felt softer and smoother, and the breakage was significantly reduced. I highly recommend getting one of M-irror's hair treatments if you are dealing with dry, brittle, or overprocessed hair. I come here for Japanese straight perms! Straight perms have changed my life. They don't wash out the way that other straightening/smoothing treatments do, and they aren't toxic the way Brazilian Blowouts are. You'll get pin straight hair that's permanent, you only need touchups every 4-6 months to straighten the new growth. To schedule, you need to text or call the Salon. Online booking is not available for straight perms or digital perms. The prices here are the most affordable I've seen for straight perms. My retouch every ~6 months costs $250. The other salon I was going to in Kapolei charged well over $400. The time I save now from not having to flat iron my entire head of hair every time I wash it is priceless. It's far less damaging than flat ironing from root to end every day. I just do light touchups in the morning to fix any areas that got wonky from sleeping, which takes less than 2 minutes. The salon is right next to Ala Moana on Pensacola street. There's limited parking directly in front of the salon. They accept card and are following Covid protocols. read more

I was looking for a good place to get my hair cut & permed, and I saw that Mirror Salon did free consultations. The person that talked to me, Ikumi, was super knowledgable and polite and showed me the differences between the Digital Perm (which is a Japanese method that makes the curls more prominent on the bottom) or the Traditional Perm (which makes the whole head curly). After asking me what I wanted and flipping through hundreds of pictures with me, we found the best one, and I made an appointment for Sunday at 3pm, and she quoted me on the spot - $200 to cut and perm (traditional perm includes cut, and starts at $160). Sunday comes, and she greets me, puts my belongings in a secure place behind the counter, and sets me up. The perm also includes a shampooing, which she did thoroughly. The cutting process took about 45 minutes, and the perm took 1hr 30. There's magazines laid out for you to enjoy, and they have a complimentary drink menu for while you're getting your new-do. After the perm, you go back to the shampooing station to rinse off the chemicals, and get it dried. Now, when I first looked in the mirror, I was a little shocked because it looked NOTHING like what I wanted - it was too curly, and the curls were thin and tight, when I wanted big and loose. HOWEVER, when I went home and it completely dried, i was absolutely BLOWN. AWAY. I felt like a different person both inside and out - i've never been so happy with my hair in my life! Ikumi is the friendliest and most relatable beautician I've ever met. It might just be me getting ahead of myself but I would actually consider her a friend now! AND I'LL JUST WRITE MY UPDATED REVIEW HERE TOO: because after two days, my curls started noticeably going away (which she warned me about, because my hair was thick and I've never gotten it permed before). I texted her about this problem and sent her a photo, and she immediately booked me another spot, free of charge, to get it re-done using a stronger chemical. She spent another 90 minutes to make my hair beautiful again, and I cannot thank her enough! read more

Random spin as to who we'd have cutting our hair. Long story short, my daughter waß thrilled with a new set of long bangs and trim by Ikumi. I was over the moon with the skill of Yamachan who kept me laughing and gave me a great haircut. Then, in my lament about thinning hair, he asked if I ever considered a digital perm, and then proceeded to hot iron curl styled it to show me. I was amazed. Never heard of it. I was back to see him two days later for a new look that makes me feel like I'm not going bald. The machine hook up to rollers was amusing. For someone who's had straight hair forever, I absolutely love these soft curls. Salon is clean and minimalist. To me, the service is worth every dollar (they're not cheap). Tip well, please. The hairstylist I used to see since high school moved away five years ago and I've been bouncing around trying to find someone to trust. My hair was in bad shape. Bleach, home dye after that, cutting it myself for over a year due to the pandemic - you name it. On a whim I booked an appointment same day and walked in having no idea what to do. I told the stylist, Yama "whatever you think would be best." I had no ideas of what I wanted, no preference on length or anything - I just wanted a cut! He did an AMAZING job! I felt bad since I basically asked him to do the hard work of choosing how to style my hair BUT he gave me this super sleek and modern asymmetrical cut I never would've chosen myself but it looks awesome! I must've cut off about a pound of hair in the process but it was worth it. Also, the cut was only $70 plus tax??!!! Unheard of when you have long and thick hair like mine - most places end up charging more for a "your hair is hard to handle" fee. But not here. Fully converted! Today was my first time going to Mi-rror Salon and I couldn't be more pleased! I've really wanted to just get a full color done. Lately I've been having balayage's but I kind of wanted to go back to a nice full color. Mi-rror Salon was sweet and friendly when helping me book my appointment. My appointment was set today at 10:30am with Ai. Upon arrival I had a little trouble with parking, it's very close to the main road where people are driving towards Ala Moana. So you have to slow down and get your parking or you'll miss it. At first when I got there, I didn't think there was parking, however after calling and asking where else I could park, the receptionist let me know someone just left. Luckily I had the parking right in front of the salon. I was pleasantly greeted by two women at the front desk, they were so happy to meet me! They even said thank you for coming! When I finally met Ai she sat me down and we discussed what I wanted to do. She gave me different options and then we chose one. I decided for today I didn't want to bleach my hair. I just wanted it to be a nice brown full color. Ai went straight to work, she colored my grays and then proceeded to the full color. Her work is so efficient and fast! After the dye set in I sat there for about 20 minutes and then went to rinse. Ai gave me a great shampoo and condition massage, I almost fell asleep she then sat me back in her chair and gave me a quick shoulder massage, I felt so pampered! The service here is amazing! Afterward, Ai started to blow dry my hair, another stylist came and helped her blowout my hair. Then once that was finished Ai asked me if I wanted to curl or style my hair because she had extra time, I told her sure! Once finished Ai put a restoration, heat protectant milky balm in my hair, it smelled so good and made my hair feel so silky soft I had to buy it! My experience here was great!!! I am SO HAPPY with the results of my Japanese straight perm. Ikumi is absolutely amazing! She is VERY thorough and takes her time with the whole process. Yes, it's a l-o-n-g process, but it is completely worth it. Ikumi did a wonderful job of explaining the process, every step of the way. She also explained how best to care for my hair afterwards, and went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable asking any questions I had. I've been to many, many salons with different variations of straight perms, and this, by far, has been my best experience. I can't emphasize this enough! My hair is extremely frizzy (think, caveman hair), so when people rush the job or don't take a careful look it at, the results are really meh. Ikumi was the opposite. She knows exactly what she's doing, and again, she's super thorough and very gentle. Oh, and bonus?! Her head and neck massage was to die for. I almost wanted to ask her if I could pay extra so she could give me a few more minutes of massage heaven.
