I've tried a number of different stylists over the years: Yoshi, Sachiko, Marine, Sally, and Tiffany, and ALL have been terrific: kind, courteous, and total pros. The shampoo and head+neck massage are truly restorative and relaxing. Stylists ask questions about how you want your hair cut and execute very airy, light styles that bring out the natural movement and beauty of hair and which have staying power, even if you don't go into the salon often, like me. Appointments run on schedule, and I was out within an hour. Highly recommended! Original review: 6/26/21: More accolades for Yoshi, proprietor and head stylist at OAK Monsarrat Salon! Had wanted to cut my waist-length hair since before the pandemic, so decided to give this salon a try, based on the glowing recs from a co-worker and Yelp. So glad I did! Booking couldn't be easier: online, so you can see all available dates/time slots, select your stylist, if desired, and check off what services you want. You get an electronic confirmation of your appointment, once submitted. Pricing was reasonable ($50= women's shampoo/dry+haircut) and transparent--both the website and online booking indicate costs. First-time customers receive 20% off, and the salon offers a loyalty club for additional discounts and a free hair treatment after 10 visits. I opted for whichever stylist was available, but got lucky and happened to get Yoshi. OAK Monsarrat is located in the same strip mall that houses Bogart's Café and da Cove, so parking is convenient and free. Arrived early, but was courteously greeted and seated right away, and offered an iPad to browse styles or watch Netflix while waiting. The salon is elegantly minimalist and clean, with partitions between clients and COVID safety protocols observed. Staff and clients are masked, and social distancing observed. Yoshi's personable, professional, a good communicator, skilled, and efficient: he took me on time, and I was done within an hour. I wanted a low-maintenance, wash-and-wear style that would look good pulled back, French-braided, or worn loose, and he delivered a great, flattering cut that met those specs--his length estimate was spot-on. For those who're not fans of the shampoo component of salon visits, Yoshi might very well convert you: washing was thorough and seamlessly executed, with a warm towel placed under your neck, and the scalp massage= sheer magic! Walked out of the salon, relaxed and rejuvenated, 18" of hair lighter, and very happy with my haircut, which I've received many compliments on! Today, I received a nice post-visit email, thanking me for my patronage and informing me of the salon's 10 day service guarantee, in case there were any issues or concerns--really appreciate that courteous touch and commitment to customer satisfaction! I enthusiastically recommend this salon and will definitely return! OAK MONSARRAT SALON Phone: 808-772-4216 URL: http://oak-salon.com

Called the salon the next day and asked them to fix it. Went in later that week and showed the same pic to a new colorist. I came out looking like the little mermaid. I will say it was fun for a minute, but, again, not what I wanted. After almost a month of living with it, I needed it fixed. It faded drastically and looked like 6 months of grow out. It was horrible! I called Lisa, at The Beauty Spot, and explained my situation. They were booked until December. I asked if she could take my name and number for an earlier cancellation. She said she would talk to her team and call me back. Within minutes, she called back and gave me Randi's number. I messaged her with pictures of my hair. She was able to schedule me, three days later, to fix my color. The day of my appt, I showed Randi the color I was going for. I'll be honest, I was nervous and praying the third time was the charm for my hair color. Randi was awesome! She took a few minutes to really look at my hair to see what was done. I think she sensed my nervousness and explained what she was doing. She told me it would be a two step process to fix. Randi was super cute and wouldn't let me watch. She turned me away from the mirrors. The rest of the team was excited for what was happening with the color. Then came time for the "big reveal". WOW!!!!! Randi......WOW!!!!! She is fantastic!!! My hair color was perfect to what I wanted. My hair also looked and felt so much better. It didn't feel like it had been processed three times in a month. I'm so in love with her work! I'm now a forever client!!!!! Thank you, so much, for taking great care of me and giving me the color I wanted!!!

Thankfully a recommendation from a dear friend who's also a makeup artist to her own stylist was THE perfect fit, and I've never looked back. Mei is the owner of M-irror salon, and while I believe she specializes in the perfect Cut based on your hair and face shape, her color skill is undeniably one of the best I've seen; in fact, her ability to work with clients to blend their natural color with the style and look they want is exactly what makes her the perfect balance for a GREAT stylist. At this point, if I were to move back to the mainland, I'd want to STILL come back and at LEAST have some of my hair appointments with MEI. It's a great salon, I've taken both my boys to have their own hair cut by her stylists, and I've even watched her train others along the way with clients. It's a great location, walking distance to Ala Moana and Ward's South Center - but call first because they're pretty busy - and worth the wait!!

But when they announced that they were opening Hair Salons again, I was so eager to get a haircut and what better way to get a haircut when my wife asked me to get a his and her haircut appointment with her regular Hair Stylist who she's been seeing for years now. Just the thought of having a Hair Stylist from Japan got me all excited because the last time I got a haircut in Japan it was an amazing experience and let's just say that Naoko from Axis Hair didn't disappoint. It was like being in Japan once again and her attention to detail from start to finish was what you would expect from a Japanese Hairstylist. It all started with a Shampoo and Head Massage and I swear that felt so amazing. That head massage almost knocked me out. Then it was time for the Hair Cut and from the start I knew I was in good hands. Great technique and although English isn't her strong point , she made me feel at ease. Her technique is simply amazing . You can just tell she's a seasoned pro and a perfectionist. She even trimmed around my eyebrows to make sure it was evened out. When all I was said and done, I was blown away at how perfect my haircut was. She made sure everything was even on both sides and just looking at myself in the mirror I was very happy with the end result. I'm gonna say this , it wasn't cheap getting a Shampoo and Cut but it was worth every cent and if I had the chance I would see Naoko every time I needed a Haircut I would do it in a heartbeat but my pockets aren't that deep to see Naoko every two weeks. Now I know why my wife has been seeing Naoko all these years. Naoko is the owner and only Hair Stylist here and she is so busy that she sees only her regulars and doesn't need the business because she's always booked and booking ahead is a definite must. One thing my wife noticed about Naoko is that she's very Clean and Thorough throughout the process. It's those little things that my wife sees that I don't. What an amazing experience at Axis Hair Salon.....

What I love about the Japanese culture is every worker greets you as you walk into their business/store, so I was immediately greeted and felt welcomed. I waited for a few minutes (good taste in music, right up my alley--Norah Jones, instrumentals to old school R&B and covers of Keyshia Cole). Took a seat and Naoko (the owner) asked what I wanted. For anyone going to a new salon that you've never been to before - you come prepared with detailed photos so there's no confusion, right? Right. So I was prepared. She gave me her advice since I showed her multiple pictures and said what she thought would work best with my hair type. After reaching an agreement, off to the shampoo-ing. Can I just say, I literally took a nap while I was getting my hair washed. The head massage was AMAZING! And, this was the first time that I went to a salon that they completely covered my face so I couldn't feel the little water splatters (which made it easier to relax). Very thorough shampoo job and would definitely recommend getting one for the massage. Afterwards, Naoko worked her magic! Talked with her about pretty much anything and everything. Glad that I could have a conversation with her since I was slightly afraid that there would be a language barrier. Then, to finish it off, she demonstrated ways to style my hair, which I liked. Learn a new hair tip, awesome! Prices are very reasonable: Cut $40, Shampoo & Cut $48, Kid's Cut with Parents (under 12) $30 ARIGATO GOZAIMASU NAOKO! I'll be back!

PARKING: Easy to find a spot, as there are designated stalls as well as street parking. Be sure to sign in upon entering. BUILDING: Waze app was awesome in leading me right to the venue. I liked knowing the building is secured; a code is needed to enter. SALON: Located up a few stairs (beautiful entry way); glass doors show you the way in to an intimate, cozy space. Edy had a hand in the design of the space: earthy tones with a nice mix of urban and modern lines. Such a comfortable spot!
