Got recommendation from Airbnb host for Salon 808 to get my hair cut before a wedding. Needed my bangs, layers, and side shaves done and wanted 1.5 in trimmed off my length. They scheduled me with Brandy who was awesome, so attentive, educated me about clarifying shampoo, did a very relaxing wash and blow dry, and my hair looked like a Kpop stars by time she was finished. Extremely reasonable pricing (compared to where I'm from, San Francisco Bay area in California), I was shocked $75 for a very individualized cut, wash and blow dry, with lovely conversation along the way. Glad I waited til getting to Hawaii to get my hair did! The salon was clean, took a hot minute to locate cuz we didn't follow the driving instructions on their website. This was my first time here. I searched the internet for someone who handles hair donations. Found a few reviews for a stylist named Karen. She was amazing. I didn't think I would have much hair left to cut after the donation snip but boy was I wrong. The donation process was quick. She measured, tied it 3 times and cut. Then I asked for a haircut cuz I wanted it shorter. She gave me a discount on my haircut. She did a wonderful job. Everyone loved my new haircut. When I first got there, I asked if I could get a wash too but she was booked. However, after completing the donation and hair cut, she was able to squeeze it in! I was so grateful. We talked about my hair and body hormones and she gave me some really good tips and samples and we also discovered together that I'm allergic to metal! I was 37 years old and finding out, duh! lol. Found Moses Cho on Instagram and through reviews and I was so happy I did! While visiting Hawaii I really wanted to get a hair cut so I found this salon that has independent hair stylists. Moses was so great- he shampooed my hair and really took his time. And then kept the length on my hair but added long layers and curtain bangs. He ended with styling my hair and I felt so pretty afterwards! The whole process took an hour. He was really friendly and told me some of his favorite spots in Oahu. I first came to Salon 808 back in early 2000s and returned whenever I could when visiting family in Honolulu. I usually get my hair cut where I live on the mainland, which is considerably more expensive. This January, I returned to Honolulu and called to see if they had any last-minute availabilty. I got an appointment with Leslea, and I cannot recommend her enough, especially for short cuts! I let her know generally what I was looking for, and she did an amazing job tailoring my cut to my hair texture and day-to-day maintenance (I just shower and go/don't do anything to my hair). The whole team is so warm - you can tell that people feel like family. The salon is very kid- and dog-friendly. I'm hoping that I can go back to Leslea whenever I'm in Honolulu - by far the best short cut I've had in a long time. read more

As a chemo patient I went in to have my hair shaved and for a wig fitting. Hanalei (Henry) and his assistant Al were so kind and compassionate, they encouraged me to be strong when I felt the tears coming, and they made me feel like everything was going to be ok. They fitted the wig and it looked so good and so natural that I left feeling like a million bucks! LOCATION: 808 Salon by Ala Moana shopping center. Convenient with easy parking. Opted to try balayage for the very first time. Contacted Malia directly because she schedules her own appointments. Fortunately, Malia accepted me as a new client (she already has a large existing client panel). Scheduling an appointment was seamless; she only requested pictures of my current hair and the desired look. The appointment itself was good fun. Unusual statement, yes.. never would I have imagined that a hair appointment could be enjoyable. However, Malia is so sweet and personable, and we ended up chatting about a number of different topics. She also went into great detail about balayage and how to care for my hair going forward. Malia is truly an artist and she works so efficiently! She fixed my tragedy of a haircut and created a lovely balayage. The end result is beautiful and looks great styled. Full disclaimer...I only get my hair cut and colored once a year. This is usually because of two reasons... 1. I get busy and completely forget to make an appointment until a year has gone by 2. It is a bit expensive to get my hair professionally colored However, Dee Hong at Salon 808 is worth every penny! I heard of Dee from my bestie, who always had amazing hair, so I knew I was in good hands. I checked out his Instagram page and knew how I wanted to color my hair and how to cut it. I showed Dee pictures and he just took it from there. If you have never got your hair professionally colored, then you may not know this...but it takes hours. And I mean HOURS. Some sessions were literally 7 to 8 hours long from cut, bleach, tint, and styled (because if you drop a few hundred on your hair, you MUST style it). But Dee and his wife (who helps out between her clients) are fantastic conversationalists and the hours fly by. Everytime I've gone to Dee, I'm never disappointed and loved how it turns out. My most recent coloring was a dark purple, which came out super nice and vibrant. The only complaint I have is that the color fades so quickly, but that just comes with the territory. If you're looking to color your hair, you won't find anyone more capable than Dee. read more

She asks intently, actively listening versus when most hair dressers ask for formality and then glaze over your response with their own personal opinion of what should be done. After countless appointments, I trust Janet enough to ask her for her opinion, knowing that she is going to suggest what she respectively thinks will work best for me. She will always reconfirm if I am content with the direction the process is going whether verifying inches to be cut or color that will compliment. What I absolutely love about Janet is that she is attentive and efficient. She takes her time but doesn't dilly-dally. She is keen on timing but never makes you feel rushed or forgotten. She will always check back frequently while she is tending to other clients or assisting coworkers as you wait during processing. While there was one time she was double-booked and I did have to wait longer than necessary, she was observant of this and was not only apologetic but credited me for my next appointment. She always breaks down prices with you before presenting you with a number; which is consistent every time-- there are no "hidden fees" for random add-on services. I leave feeling like my time and money were both well-spent. I'm a new customer to Salon 808, and honestly had no idea this salon existed until my friend/stylist made the move from her previous location during COVID times no less. Since we live in the age of COVID, I'll touch on the precautions in place first and then tell you why my stylist should be your stylist. Upon entering the salon, you must pass a temperature screening and sanitize your hands before going into the common areas. Customers are also to wait until their stylist is available to prevent congregating. Customers also complete contract tracing questionaries prior to services being rendered. All stations are separated by plastic sheeting and stations are socially distracted. All common touch areas are also fully sanitized between customers. Now onto my hair. I've been seeing Brandi for about two years now and we've done everything from making my hair magenta to blonde and a few odd colors in between. Given my hair naturally is a dark dark brown, it's seen lots of bleach in the two years I've been seeing her and my hair feels as soft as I've it's never been chemically treated mostly because of Olaplex and Brandi teaching me the correct way to care for my hair without causing damage or breakage. Brandi is a gifted colorist and stylist who makes sure that your end result is something you're happy with no matter how long it takes as evidenced by our most recent 8 hour session. Brandi's prices are reasonable and she definitely brings life back into your hair whether you're looking for fashion colors, a change or even just grey coverage. I went in about a week ago to get my hair colored and was met with awful service by YoYo. My partner who scheduled it for me as an anniversary gift was surprised at the cost of my hair because he was told something completely different! He was told I would receive hair color a cut and style but I never received the style . During my time of the chair she was very rough with my hair and would complain about working there, It was so uncomfortable. And to make things worse she left me unattended and burned my scalp while bleaching. I tried to give her the Benefit of the doubt and continued with the process. After the bleaching she seemed to be in a hurry to get me out so she quickly colored my hair and got me out! And of course my hair was still wet so I didn't really notice much until it dried. The next day I noticed that my hair was patchy and some of the hair didn't take the color so I called her to see if we could possibly fix it. I also wanted to know what her pricing was and she got angry and told me that I can just come back get my hair dye back to normal and get a full refund. Which I never asked for but I wasn't going to argue. As soon as I showed up to the salon I was greeted very unprofessionally by the owner, herself and her boyfriend . Immediately after going in they started yelling at us and belittling us and accusing me of washing my hair to intentionally ruin my own hair. Yo-yo would not let me explain and neither would the owner as they continued to make a scene infront of the whole salon. It was extremely embarrassing. Please if you decide to go there be very clear with what you want and don't leave without knowing they did the job correctly. read more

I just recently went into Salon 808 to get my wig styled. Wig? If you are wondering why? let me explain. I recently started chemotherapy and as warned I have lost my hair. I have never owned or worn a wig before and I was insure about wearing the wigs that I had (one given to me by a church friend & one that I purchased on an impulse while late night Youtube watching). I decided to call Salon 808 based on the information that I received from my chemo social worker. I went in and was met by the most amazing of human beings. Henry Hanalei Ramirez is an angel. He not only styled my wig, he calmed my nerves and made me feel secure in wearing my wig by the trimming that he did. He shared stories of his life and made the time so enjoyable. I feel very secure in wearing my wig now based on the styling and feel. I feel so blessed that they offer this service to cancer patients who need to feel somewhat normal again. So, after a very bad haircut....I grew it out for 11 months. Had 2 weddings to attend and wanted to get a really good stylist for a haircut. Told whoever answered the phone and she assured me she will get a really good stylist. I got booked with someone that only had 2+ years experience and she literally butchered my hair!!! First time here, I get high anxiety when I need to cut my hair so I don't do it as often as I should and I end up being impulsive when I do feel I need a cut. Salon 808 had an opening on the day I called but that teaches me not to be impulsive as I got someone that didn't really know how to cut a women's hair style. I think she must cut mostly men's hair. I showed her pictures and asked for long layers but I ended up with a crooked cut without long layers because she did it in an unorthodox way using a blade (?) I've never had a stylist cut a women hair with a blade. When I got home I noticed there were straggler hairs making my ends uneven and crooked. She was a sweet older lady but I don't think I'll be going back. It's so hard to find a good stylist when you move from one end of the island to the other and it's nerve wrecking going place to place trying to find someone good at a decent price which doesn't break my bank.....but maybe I need to spend $200 to $300 for a good cut..... ughhhh.....I guess I have to keep searching... read more

I called ahead for a wig consultation due to Chemo. Was told to come in Monday between 9am-3pm and have a look at the catalogue along with a consultation regarding wigs and the service the Salon offers. They did say they only keep a limited supply of wigs in the Store and none with longer hair. I asked if I could at least try something to get an idea about size but the guy behind the counter wasn't very forthcoming. He handed me a thin catalogue and a color sample band along with a post-it to write down what I thought I'd like. A little help would have been nice, some consultation I would have even paid for it, some advice on caps, colors etc would have been great. I've always wanted to get a unique color for my hair, so I finally decided to do so for my birthday. I found Yoyo through her Instagram @beauty.hair.yoyo. I requested for a rose gold balayage as well as a hair cut to cut off the dead ends. I wanted to keep as much length as possible. Yoyo did such a great job on my hair and knew exactly what I wanted. She was very friendly and quick with responding to me on making my appointment. Keep in mind, I had a lot of hair and it's very long and thick (I did have virgin hair at least, but this was still not an easy task). In one session, she was able to make my hair look beautiful! I even went to Ala Moana to go shopping afterwards and someone came up to me and complimented my hair! She made my birthday feel special and I'm very grateful for her wonderful service. I've been coming to Salon 808 for haircuts, color and highlights for well over 20 years, first when Gina moved over from another salon and then when I changed to Jason as my stylist. The owner and the staff and all the stylists do such a good job. I love that they are conveniently located next to Ala Moana Shopping Center where you can find lots of parking. They always call you at least a few days in advance of your appointment to remind you which I love and need...sometimes. I've been to 3 salons in the past year because every stylist seems to want to give me the same boring cut. My hair is naturally curly so they tend to shy away from layers. Janet totally recommended layers and I'm glad she did. She also recommended conditioning treatments to get my hair back to healthy. Soooo my favorite Bay Area girl, Katrina always has her hair so pretty and after asking her for advice, she told me she only gets her hair done by Karen here. So here's my unbiased (is there such a thing? Lol) review: Karen. Uber sweet. We talked about life, past and present. She brought up things I legit forgot about and that it's amazing how the new generation is a little different. She's a beast at her craft, and I walked out of a salon without feeling like I spent too much and I was absolutely respected from text messaging (I was late) to air hugs at the end. When I got home, my husband said "not that your hair looked damaged before, but man I like it now" haha, tell me how you really feel! But all jokes aside. She was amazing. The younger stylists get tips from her- even when she's working on me lol. She almost abolished all brass from my color and I'm sitting pretty at an ash blonde with a deep toner. I wasn't expecting a darker blonde but I was delightfully surprised! Stylists don't know how your unique hair is gonna react to the product so the more they get to know your hair, the better your results (Karen taught new that) Hope to get to that icy color soon. Oh and she didn't charge me an arm and a leg. Matter of fact, I spent roughly half that of the price I spent at the last salon- with better results. And that just goes to show guys, salons will promote themselves in social media and put time and invest resources into overpromising and under- delivering. Don't feed into the hype. Feed into your own experiences! Salon Patrons old and young, goes to show they do a range of styles and return customers means consistent service. Clean, COVID precautions in effect. Everyone wears masks, plastic drapes between customers and temp checks at the front. Oh and lots of hand sanitizer lol. You all Must visit. I will be back! read more
