This place is absolutely amazing! Saved my butt from looking stupid on Easter. I did some home box dye to strip out the color in my hair and it destroyed my it and left it orange and brassy and regular dye from Sally's wouldn't take. I wanted to see if they would take me the day before Easter, same day appointment, which I thought would be almost impossible but they were able to take me regardless of timing. Trying to find this place is hard but Lucy the receptionist was super nice in constantly helping me find the place every time I called which must have been at least 5 times. When I finally found the place I was introduced to Jana Park who was going to be my stylist. I told her what had happened to my hair and what I wanted to do with it. She gave me one of the most thorough consultations that I ever had going into a salon. I told her all the products I used and she looked them up and looked at the ingredients. I wanted a color correction and also ash brown hair with ash highlights. We decided that because of the damage I had done the previous night that it would be safer for my hair to just color correct it and come back for highlights and dimensions later. That way my hair can rest and recuperate. But we did agree that he orange just had to go! My hair was being so difficult and it took 3 different times and colors to try to cancel out my crazy orange. She told me that she tried to make my hair as ash as possible. When we finally blowed dried my hair the color looked fantastic! It was warm tones mixed with ash tones. I loved it! Although we didn't get to do all the highlights and what not she was still able to fix the crazines that was so hard to fix and did an amazing job! Instead of just putting dark brown in it to cover the orange which other salons suggested Jana did all she could to not only fix he problem but still give me what I wanted which was ashy and cooler brown hair. She even trimmed my hair and made me look as fresh as possible. Thank you so much Jana from saving me from lookin tow up on Easter! This was my first time at a real salon. It's more $ than what I'm used to spending, but it's so worth it! I was happy with the service and am definitely coming back. Location: Conveniently adjacent to the Ala Moana shopping center. Technically they're not in the mall, they're in the Ala Moana Pacific Center (same building as Shokudo restaurant). Best way to get there is thru the rooftop parking by Macy's, there's a connecting walkway with a few steps up and an escalator. Handicap access is thru the main elevators via the ground floor lobby. There's no restroom inside the salon, it's actually down the hall. Only a few steps away but can be embarassing to be seen with your hair wrapped in foil or plastic in the main hall lol. Ambience: Very bright and clean. More practical/functional than pretty (which I liked since it felt less pretentious than other salons). Waiting area has metal chairs (your s/o might not wanna sit and wait there) but I was taken in right away and didn't utilize the area myself. The actual styling chairs were very comfortable. Some stations had large windows with a view of the shopping center and ocean, other stations had nice frosted windows. The stations are crammed kinda close together so don't expect a lot of privacy. Varied clientele came thru, which was really cool. Older women in wheelchairs, kids, working professionals, men, trendy girls, everyone was welcome! Service: Excellent. No frills, but the stylists are all very skilled and competent. I felt like I could trust my stylist and just relax. Refreshments offered were water and coffee. Shampoo, blowdry, and styling were included with my coloring appointment. The owner, Henry Ramirez (aka Uncle Hanalei), greeted everyone who came thru the door and also walked around to check how my experience was going. The stylists are eager to please and will cater the conversation from chatty to gossipy to relaxing depending upon your individual expectations and mood. Stylist: Malia Amaral @maliaamaralhair for coloring. Local, very approachable demeanor, licensed professional. She did a fanastic job with my botched box-dyed hair and transformed it into *exactly* what I wanted. I now have even color and it looks so healthy and glossy (not fried at all!). Now I know why it's better to see a professional expert instead of trying to DIY. Malia responded quickly to my texts for an appointment (super convenient!) and gave me an honest price estimate. Before we started, she asked if I had any skin sensitivities (I do!) and she really listened to what I wanted. She is fastidious with her work (bordering on OCD) and a perfectionist. I really felt like she knew exactly what she was doing the entire time and I didn't worry about my hair at all. She even gave a quick scalp/neck massage during the shampoo which was unexpected and greatly appreciated. She was also very careful to protect my skin and clothes from getting ruined by dye with extra capes and plastic wrap. She did a great job styling my hair at the end and it really did feel like she sincerely wants you to look your best when you leave. I got compliments on my hair all day! Price: It seemed high for me since I'm not used to salon prices... but after calling around it really is a fair cost and Malia was able to do my hair in one 4-hour sitting instead of 2 sittings that other places said I'd need. Even my husband said it was 100% worth the money and he's encouraging me to make Malia my regular stylist. I have always done my hair in San Francisco, California. For the longest time in Hawai'i, I have been trying to find a hair dresser who could retouch or do my hair. I went through many salons on yelp, hair stylist accounts on Instagram, and reached out to several hair artists. In the beginning, the stylist who's work caught my eyes, was Dee. I did reach out to him, but decided to just go back to San Francisco and get my hair done there. Since I live in Hawai'i, I knew I eventually had to find a stylist here so I reached out to Dee again. This time, I secured my appointment and I was NOT disappointed at all. I am so glad I went to get my hair done with Dee. I had about maybe 4 inches of grown out root, but he worked magic with my hair. He melted it so well. I was very surprised and excited about my results. Dee knew exactly what he was doing and was extremely knowledgeable. I really appreciated that he walked me through the entire process, and also told me all my options and made sure I was ok the entire time. There are many hair artists who just do it for the money and don't care much about their clients, but you could tell Dee was extremely passionate about hair and his work. It's nice to see people who actually care. This was my first time with Dee, and I plan to continue to go to Dee for further appointments. I'm glad I finally found an artist who is worth going to. I came here by recommendation of my friend. I was looking to add some color in my hair and get some layers. I called and was booked with a woman name Janet. The receptionist gave me her number and told me to text her pictures of my current hair and what I would like done. This was awesome because when I came in for my appointment, she already had the colors ready and we got right to work. I spent about 4 hours in the salon chatting with Janet. Very nice woman and she did amazing on my hair ! It was the first time I had ever went to salon to color my hair and I'm so happy I went. I went in with my hair really messed up ! I wasn't sure what to expect with this Salon. My phone did me no favors in setting an appointment as I somehow referred me to another island without me knowing. When I went to check in the staff was extremely helpful in finding out what had happened and accompanied me in what turned out to be a walk in at that point. I saw a couple of kids walk out with great haircuts and absolutely was not disappointed in the one I received either. My stylist was very friendly and gave me an excel hair cut, I got a hair wash, scalp massage, beard trimmed and hot brushed for about 35$, absolutely amazing. Came here after a horrendous experience at Dada Salon, hoping to achieve my hair goals of taking my hair from black to a subtle balayage brown in time for my wedding this summer. Malia was a breath of fresh air! Like talking to a friend, it was so easy to tell her exactly what I wanted. She listened intently and sympathized with my bad experience at the other salon, and explained the process with her and expected result clearly. She was so attentive to me the entire time, explaining that she works 6 days/week and spreads out her balayage clients so she can give them her full focus. And man, did she deliver! She was able to take my frequently dyed hair (just ruined last week by the other salon) to what I wanted and more, throwing in a deep conditioning treatment at no cost to me. She showed me the depth of her technique, that the highlights would frame my face nicely no matter where I parted my hair or if I had it up for the gym or for my wedding. It was a little pricey, but she was upfront and honest about the price before I booked the appointment. The price was also not surprising in comparison to where I've been in California. Jenna Tongg (Tokujo) is one of the best in the business and Salon 808 is so lucky to have her! She suggests I come in with a few Pinterest pics of what I want my hair to look like. After a brief consultation, she gives her recommendations on what she thinks would be best for me and she is always right on what looks best. The past couple of visits with Jenna were for an up-do and some makeup. Jenna once again WOWed me with results. Check out the pics of the amazing finished product. My gf didn't have a good experience the last time she went when they were by Ward Theater and waited years before setting an appointment with them to give them a second try... once again she was greatly disappointed. She wanted to get her hair done by Salon 808 not someone who rents a chair there. She came at her appointed time and it seemed like they weren't ready for her as she waited about 30 minutes before getting work done. The service wasn't great (waiting a lot) and she didn't find out that the person who was helping her wasn't a Salon 808 worker until payment at the end, very misleading! read more

I've tried a few salons on the island, & 6 months ago I had tried the celebrities salon, and was unsatisfied with the way my hair looked flat & without a whole lot of difference in my bangs like I wanted. I did a bit of research with salons before I chose Salon 808, because a majority of of the 1 star reviews here seem to be for when they got their hair colored and didn't like it... so I can't speak for those who do the coloring and what that experience is like. For a regular non high maintenance cut, this seems to be the perfect place. Their stylists: Salon 808 is a big salon, and I had called a to schedule an appointment a couple times but they were booked up for the days I wanted in the same week until they finally had one opening for the week. Call in advance to make sure you get the person you want! They have about 32 stylists, some of them specialize in different things such as cutting curly hair, Asian hair, long hair, coloring etc so if you have special requirements then ask about who does that! Location: you know where shokudo is? Outside there's an elevator, go to the 7th floor-- I had a little trouble finding it at first. Service: I had Quyen (quayan? Pronounce Quinn) and she was so nice!! She explained what she was going to do & recommended what she thought would look nice in terms of length/style for my bangs based on my face structure. I had asked her the same thing as the celebrities salon-- shorter, relaxed, laid back vibe, with shorter bangs that aren't too obvious but definitely there, small layers. Loved the care and details she made into cutting my hair, and so I trusted her judgment on it. Check out my image to see what she did-- thank you Quyen! Price: it was around $55, but so worth it. Louie has a lot of openings in his schedule so I don't have a problem booking or rebooking when my schedule gets busy. Louie is meticulous in precision of his cut and you just feel sexy every time. Louie also washes your hair very good. When he puts on the conditioner, he gives a soothing head massage, which is amazing that I am getting a 5-min high quality head massage with the hair wash and sometimes I just want to fall asleep. I had an appointment with Dee for a "Root touch up" This was my first time getting a root touch up considering up until 6 months ago I had virgin hair. Im very protective of my hair so I looked through a lot of salons and a lot of different hair stylists. DEE has a lot of work posted on Yelp so I was confident in choosing him. I thought I had a pretty good idea about what to expect. I thought I would show the color that was used previously so he could know better what it might fade into so it would be easier to get the right color as close to the rest of my hair as possible. He said it didn't matter because they use different products anyway. He asked me if I wanted to do all my hair or just my roots. I was a little confused by this question because I scheduled for a root touch up. So I confirmed, I want a touch up.... so let's skip forward past all the petty complaints I could make because I'm angry and just go to the ROOT of the problem here. After the dye, wash and dry was complete I noticed the color was off. But I still had full confidence and assumed it would fade after a few washes. I washed it three times and the color was still a ridiculously darker color than the rest of my hair. I would completely understand a shade or so off but these are completely different colors! I have chestnut red on top of medium copper blond!! I called twice to get ahold of his assistant who told me that Dee had offered a full color which is crap, he asked if I wanted full color or roots. With no explanation as to why it would be best to do a full color. She also said that there was no way for it to be an exact match because the products are different. To which I bring up again, I understand a shade or so off but these are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COLORS! I asked her what can I do? How do I fix it? She said I could come in and dye all my hair. To which I asked if I would have to pay for that. She said yes. UNACCEPTABLE! You charged me 130$ before tip to screw up my hair and now you want me to pay more to dye ALL of my hair a color I never wanted to begin with. THAT is your solution? No, absolutely not. EDIT: I changed my rating to a 2 from 1 because I still believe Dee does really good work. I believe my case is unusual for him. He was really pleasant during my appointment, the salon itself is pleasant and all the workers are very nice. Still a 2 because honestly at the end of the day I still have to wear a hat and I'm still crushed about how this turned out. read more

I went to Salon 808 to get a new color. I wanted something lighter, but wasn't certain how light I wanted to go. I was also a bit uneasy about lightening it because I really didn't want to damage my hair. My stylist Louie sat with me and we looked through some pictures together over coffee. By this point I was already enjoying my day off, which only got better after we started the process. I felt like I was in good hands and a sense of family in the Salon...they all seemed to help each other out including one stylist Janet who helped to dry and style me when I was pressed for time. Louie reassured me that his techniques would offer me the lighting I wanted, but still keep my hair healthy. After leaving I was given just that! Lighter and healthier hair! When you're good, you're in demand and Dee is in demand! Dee came to me through my friend's high recommendation and we'll after I saw her hair... I was like I need that person ASAP in my life! Prior to being a Yelper, I had used his expertise about a year ago and was craving another hair change. Dee has such a wonderful personality and so much knowledge about hair (coloring, trends, hair types, etc.). He works very hard on keeping up on current trends and techniques. And honestly when have Asian hair, you don't just go anywhere to get your tresses colored! I came armed with photos on my phone of exactly what I was looking for and what I did not want so he was able to see the difference. Dee is very patient, understanding and helpful. I feel it's important to know exactly what you want so it will allow him to create what you're looking for, so photos are very important. Dee had informed me at the time of my appointment he would only have time to color and not cut my hair. I was fine with that, I mean beggars can't be choosers, so I made sure I had it trimmed prior to going there. Dee is easy to talk to and takes serious pride in his work. Just ask any lady who has had their hair colored... good things take time. I knew from last time it's about 3 hour (plus) process for all the magic to happen. Luckily, I came prepared with my phone charger (just in case) and some snacks because I didn't want to be all hangry. It was totally worth it and I walked out 3 hours later with a gorgeous chocolate caramel balayage. He knows how to make a girl feel like a brand new person. Mahalo, Dee! *I generally write reviews when places exceed expectations. That being said, Salon 808 is a keeper! I am always nervous about getting hair done for special out of town events; seems to almost always result in failure--my thin hair wont hold curls, insecure stylists over hair spraying my hair making matters worse and its just difficult to style and in the end leaving me feeling bummed in being in important photos with the undesirable look. Logan who answered my calls was very professional and spoke in a calm tone without judgement. He was flexible with my change in schedule to bump appt. an hour earlier, he gave me a quote and assured I got here with his detailed instructions, which put me a lot at ease. The stylist, I think her name was (asian, auntie)Janice and her assistant Amy (young, short wavy hair with pigtails)? They got straight to the point: asked for photos of hair style goals, questioned my hair and how it was cared for, tell me whys and how to take care of hair up until the wedding event. I left feeling skeptical at first. The styling happened all so fast, not much chit chat, just silence, hair tugging, bam bam boom, and Janice just straight up took off there after, leaving Amy to bill me...I left the salon like "hmm okay, bye? lets just have to wait and pray for the best...?" I am in love with this salon! My mom has lung cancer and just started a new round and new type of chemo, which has caused her hair to fall out. She toyed with the idea of getting a wig, but had no idea where to go or how to go about it. I asked around and a few of my friends said that Henry, a co-owner of Salon 808 cuts and styles wigs for people with cancer. They also said they didn't know how much he charged, but that it was really inexpensive. I got in the phone and scheduled an appointment for my mom and waited anxiously for her appointment day to arrive. We arrived at the salon 30 minutes early (my mom is notorious for this) and were greeted warmly at the front desk. Henry's assistant came over quickly to greet us and tell us it'd be a few minutes. We waited about 5 minutes before being escorted to Henry's station. Henry came over and was very friendly. He asked mom a few questions about style and color, then brought out some wigs so mom could decide on a color. He then fitted her and styled the wig. They gave her instructions on how to care for it and how to style it. The bonus was that he only charges $20 for the wig, styling, and if needed shaving your head. I am so thankful for this amazing service and will patronize/promote this salon because of Henry's amazing gift to people with cancer! read more

I truly appreciate Madoka @ Salon 808 she just knows my hair strand by strand! I could never find the perfect hair dresser (until now) they would give either give me bad advice and make my hair look crazy or not understand my hair or my wants and I'd end up with more crazy hair. But the worst is when you find that perfect hair dresser and they get promoted to a salon in the mainland. Ok back to Madoka, I've been going to her about 2 years now and I am very satisfied with her work! Now lets just hope she doesn't move. She understands what I want when I describe it to her, and I trust her enough that when she ask me "So what do you want to do today?" I just tell her to do whatever just leave it kind of long, at the end I'm happy with my new "do". Madoka also does my straight perm, which doesn't damage my hair. She uses Yuko which I believe is from Japan. It's a very mild product that she uses because whenever I do a straight perm it's like nothing! it doesn't burn your scalp or eyes thank goodness. I really like it because even days after I wash my hair it doesn't look or feel fried or damaged. There's nothing bad to say about Madoka or Salon 808. Salon 808 I was pretty disappointed with my stylist. I went there thinking I was going walk out with a new cool looking hair-do but then I walked out looking like a fool. Place is overpriced and the service was mediocre. I grew out my hair just to get it murdered! As soon as i got home, to be honest I shaved everything off. I dare to say my stylist name, Angela, she was nice but didn't capture what I wanted. I notice that she was good with shears/clippers but terrible with a buzzer. Her buzzer looked like a toy, a tiny pink toy! Then I went to get my brows done by Jaime, he was good. Made me feel relaxed and the waxing was professionally done. Took his time and always warned before ripping the strip off. I wish I went to him instead of Angela. I went to here for the first time to get a hair cut & light brown balayage and had the best experience! I showed Kara a picture of what I wanted and I couldn't have asked for better results! She really took her time cutting, bleaching, toning & styling my hair and I mentioned I had a new piercing which she was very gentle with. She also gave a super relaxing head & neck massage when rinsing the toner from my hair. I will definitely be coming back whenever I need my hair done! read more

Jason Victorino is by far the BEST stylist there!!! I have been seeing him for yeeeaaars ... And now that he's at Salon 808 it makes the experience even better He is fantastic! I pretty much let him do whatever he wants ..... I know my hair will look fabulous regardless. The charges arent really high and it is well worth it ... I think he charges $35 for a cut and $60 for color ... Honestly I never pay attention when he tells me the prices for what he's doing. I'm always happy with the results .... I only wish I had taken a picture of my before and after so you could see how awesome his work is :( But again ... Go see JASON VICTORINO!!!!!! He's the best stylist there ... I'll be sticking with him as always and you will too once you've given him a chance to do your hair ;) read more

I had been growing my hair out for quite some time now and after looking through Yelp I decided to go with Salon 808...specifically Jason Victorino. I had to make my appointment 2 months in advance because he is kind of popular. The day of my appointment It took me longer than I thought to find this place, it's located on the 7th floor of the Shokudo and Pietros building. When I walked in I noticed they had many stylists and also found they had wi-fi. Overall my experience here was amazing, I had a picture of the hair color I was aiming for and Jason was able to create a gorgeous color. Indoors is appears to be dark red, but once it hits the sun it become this bright shiny red almost like a violet color. As far as the hair cut goes he gave me layers and was able to keep my length which I really appreciate! Him and Sheldon, his assistant, were great throughout the whole process. Although it took about 3 hours, it was totally worth the wait. The price was affordable in comparison to other stylists doing similar cuts/dyes. I believe he charged $40 for the haircut and $65 for the dye since my hair is long and thick. I didn't mind spending this at all especially since I was supper happy with the outcome. Where to start with this place?? My whole experience was amazing. From the stylist who did my color to the ambience of the salon... five stars. I came in a few weeks ago to see Louie and I have only decided now to make a review because I keep getting compliments on my hair! About my experience: I made the appointment for a color change. I wasn't too sure what I wanted to do, but Louie was able to help guide me through some options. He suggested a balayage or ombré...which was a great suggestion because I came in a complete brunette. The change was exactly what I wanted, not to overwhelming. The color came out perfect and in a timely manner. About the Salon 808: This place has great energy. Full of beautiful people that look happy to be working there with happy clients. Very clean and organized. I also appreciate the central location. About my stylist Louie: Ok first things First Ladies and gentlemen Louie is absolutely gorgeous. So much that at first you may be a bit taken back, but once you get in his chair and hear his warm confident suggestions you are put at ease. He is knowledgeable, patient, and aims to please. I was a little scared to be going blonde, but his assurance and calm demeanor made the whole process enjoyable. This review is way overdue!! I searched for a long time to find a blonde balayage expert, and I'm so lucky I found Malia. She absolutely nailed it, and showed the utmost care and skill throughout. I'm writing this review months later and I'm still thrilled with how the balayage looks and the colour has held. Malia was never in a rush, and communicated clearly and thoroughly.
