5 stars for the fried green beans. I know that sounds random but they are really good! Each green bean was battered generously and deep fried. The beans were sizeable, juicy and complimented the batter really well. I hadn't seen this menu item at other Chinese places but I wish I'd discovered it sooner. I also enjoyed the eggplant here. Food was awful. The fried rice was white rice covered with soy or some other sauce. Not fried or seasoned. The white rice was visible in clumps. No egg or other veggies except sliced green onions. I added egg, sesame oil, seasoning and "refried" the rice. If I wanted to cook, I wouldn't have ordered. read more

Please tell me why have an online menu with different pricing when my BF told me the total he paid I asked why because prawn fried rice is 6.95 each and the 2 salt n pepper prawns 7.95 each then a lunch combo. He showed me the receipt Smdh to get the food and no flavor to the fried rice or the prawns. He told me the elder man was rude and slammed his card aggressively at him. This place has two of my favorite attributes when it comes to a restaurant: it's GOOD and CHEAP! Is it the best Chinese food that I've ever had in my life? Well, of course it ain't! BUT... this little hole in the wall cranks out some damn good Chinese food for dirt cheap! And, when I say hole in the wall... there's LITERALLY a hole in the wall inside where you place your order at. It ain't fancy folks! Don't expect to dine in because there's no place to sit. This is strictly to-go but it's the best deal for cheap Chinese food in the area. You really can't beat their $6 lunch specials! And surprisingly, they have hella options to choose from! I ordered their Kung pao chicken lunch special and I wasn't left disappointed! My food was made to order and came to me piping hot, right out of the pan. The kung pao Chicken had a great mildy spicy flavor to it and the fried rice was nice and fluffy. It was a filling portion for $6 and they really loaded up on the chicken. I was really quite impressed! Judging from the outside, I wouldn't have thought much of it. But, that's why you should never judge a book by its' cover. This place was great! Lee, the owner, is such a nice guy! He basically runs the shop by himself and does the cooking as well. He was super friendly and told me to come back again in the future. He asked me if I liked everything before I left. I love when owners care about what their clients think. This is why I love supporting locally owned businesses! 8/2/2022: As a practitioner of traditional Chinese exerecises I have had a lot of Chinese food. Lee at M & S Kitchen delivers good quality at good value. I have ordered three entrees to go orders from Lee at M & S Kitchen over the last two weeks. Each time the food has been good and the service prompt. What is more, the dishes are large enough to provide dinner and lunch the next day--a very good economy for $14. The establishment is small, yet Lee has managed to make it esthetically pleasing, with Chinese paper cut art and wood work to turn a utilitarian space into a home. I recommend M & S Kitchen to anyone who is hungry for a taste of Chinese food. read more

#####AVOID AVOID NASTY FOOD THIS IS NOT A 4 STAR RESTAURANT### How this place has four stars, I will NEVER understand. No way this place is 4 stars. Sure the owner was friendly but this was the foulest food I have had the displeasure of tasting in very long time and nice doesn't cut it when I threw away almost $35+tip on dinner. General Chicken Dish: I ate one bite and spit it out. I didn't even swallow the first bite. It food tasted like FREEZER BURN and rancid oil and too much soy sauce. This shit tasted like it has been sitting in the bottom of the freezer since 1984. It was also VERY overcooked and super mushy. Everyone else didn't dare take a whole bite but they tasted the sauce and all agreed it was inedible. Brocc+Beef: The Broccoli was so overcooked it was practically paste. The beef was tough and gristly - and the overall taste was just.. nasty. Fried Rice: Tiny chunks of mystery meat + too much soy sauce. Yup, they even fucked up basic fried rice. The food tastes like it's made years in advance with the cheapest ingredients possible and then stored in 5 gallon buckets in a dirty fridge. Congealed, yet mushy, you know what I mean? Fried Wonton: The WonTons themselves were OK, in fact they were the ONLY thing we actually ate. ALL the rest of the food went in the round file. Anyway, the Wontons were OK, BUT.. the ew, oh my f-ing god, the sauce was super thick like JELLO. You just KNOW it's been sitting in that little cup for 5 years in the back of the fridge. No one ate the sauce, either. How's that for fucked up? They fucked up the wonton sauce. That shit comes as a powder and they mix it with water or some shit. How do you screw that up? So yeah, an order of wontons won't feed 3 people, so we hopped in the car and went for burgers in the drive through. OH YEAH and just to add icing on this already shit-cake of a meal, a dime sized bit of the nuclear pinkish/reddish wonton sauce got onto my beautiful cutting board and I didn't realized it for a few hours. Well, the sauce stained the shit out of my cutting board. Now I have a mildly infuriating, semi-permanent reminder of the worst Chinese Food meal ever. read more

I work in Oakland and live in Berkeley. I pass by this restaurant almost every work day on my way back home. On the outside, it looks a little scary--dilapidated and old. It's in a run down part of Shattuck on the Oakland/Berkeley border next to a liquor store and across from a building that used to be a Pizza Hut that closed over a year ago. So one day I decided to look up the reviews on Yelp and to my surprise, they were pretty good. So I decided to give it a try. I've only tried one dish so far, an all day lunch special--Beef Broccoli over rice for $4.50. The pic I posted looks like it's blurred but my cell phone was right over the dish and the steam coming off caused that effect. This is strictly a take-out joint. No place to sit to eat your food. Just four plastic patio chairs to sit while you wait for your take-out. The chef is an elderly Chinese man and he's gated behind a wall and there's a plexiglass cutout where you can order, pay and he passes the food to you. It's not a professional job, just a do it yourself barricade. After he took my money, he went into the kitchen and I could hear the stir fry. Such a familiar sound. I decided to sit down in the waiting area. Be forewarned, it doesn't look like it's been cleaned in awhile. Since I can't see the kitchen, I don't know what shape it's in but I'm optimistic and I'll let the food speak for itself. When I got my dish, it was pretty good. Lots of broccoli florets and it was al dente and not overcooked. Since beef is the most expensive ingredient, I was expecting the worst but it was marinated and flavorful but not too salty and they were in whole even slices, not chopped or chipped beef. Rice was whole kernels and not mushy or broken up. It's the way my mother taught me to make steamed rice. The sauce was a basic oyster sauce, not fancy but tasty. There are some really, really good Chinese food spots in Oakland, all with unique quirks that make them so brilliant. M&S Kitchen is no different, in fact, it might be the cheapest of them all - and not in food quality. The place has one table and most (if not all) the orders are pickup. I've never ordered delivery as I live less than a block away. Being right near Chen's Garden, it took me over a year to get the courage to go and try this spot, as I thought "surely it's got to be good if it's been here as long as I have and still kickin". Well, it sure it. I went with the Wor Wonton Soup as my first go and realized when I picked up my food that he runs the lunch special all day long (after 5:30 the Fried Rice portion becomes Steamed Rice), but it's still around $6 after tax. Blown away, I gave it another go and selected the Mongolian Beef Lunch Meal from the menu. It was pretty tasty, jam packed with sweet and sour and salty and spicy flavors, but for $6 there wasn't much meat (not that I can argue, I was full and it was a good portion of food). All in all, this is a wonderful spot if you just transplanted from New York and are used to paying sub $8 per meal at a Chinese Food spot. Read reviews and thought I'd give it a try. Building and interior don't look great but don't let that fool you. The food was not only very very good but very well priced. The man who took and cooked my order was very friendly. Had pot stickers which were clearly home made and fresh egg rather than flour noodles and tasted excellent. Egg rolls were fresh and crispy and delicious. Fried rice was excellent with dragon breath and good fry, not oily and white like others. General chicken was all white meat, delicious and crispy. "Lunch" specials (served anytime) are a bargain and perfect for feeding workers and late-night drunken partyers. This is kind of a funky spot, very small and you order through a small plexiglass window in a wall between the kitchen and waiting area which makes you feel like you should be wearing a Kevlar vest. Sign says under 24 hour video surveillance but if there is a camera I couldn't spot it. Might be kind of like getting an ADT sign for your lawn and not paying for the actual system. I've seen people pause and look in the window, then wander off likely due to that atmosphere, but I didn't let it deter me. Any way the fellow that does the cooking is a wiz at getting multiple orders out quickly and the prices are low even by Chinese restaurant standard. Is the food great? No. Is it decent and not greasy? Yes. Is the owner friendly and pleasant? Yes. I've been here multiple times when I need a quick bite to take home and don't want part with a lot of cash. So hence the three stars. Street parking, take-out only, cash only, open 11-9:30 daily 7 days a week except sometimes when he doesn't feel like it on Sundays. I live nearby and frequent this take-out retaurant about once a week on average. I love this place. It's old-fashioned and run by a lovely family. This one older gentleman does all the cooking and he is superb. His food is fresh, clean, non-greasy and delicious. I always get take out from here when friends drop by unexpectedly. I have never had bad dish, and rarely is his cooking "off". Please , please help support small business like this They need and deserve our patronage.
