I had an incredibly disappointing and frankly disturbing experience at LuxBar in Chicago this week. Our server abruptly left in the middle of serving our table. A manager stepped in but provided extremely inadequate service--no drink refills, dirty dishes left sitting for a long time, and no explanation. When we finally asked why our server had stopped serving us, the manager said the server felt "uncomfortable" for an unspecified reason and wouldn't say more. At the end of the meal, after waiting a long time with no one clearing our table or offering more drinks, I saw our server nearby and gently tapped him on the arm while saying "excuse me." He responded, without stopping, by saying "Don't f***king touch me," and kept walking. I was stunned and upset. I went to the host stand and asked if someone could please help us, and also shared that the situation felt uncomfortable and possibly homophobic. I never said our server was homophobic--I only said his language and energy felt that way to me. Instead of receiving an apology or even acknowledgment of how I felt, the manager came to our table and asked us to leave--saying we had made our server feel uncomfortable. Apparently, it's policy at LuxBar to remove guests who make staff uncomfortable, but not the reverse. At no point did anyone from LuxBar apologize for how I was treated. I left feeling disrespected, judged, and dismissed--for calmly expressing concern about what felt like biased treatment. I'm sharing this because I believe guests deserve to feel safe and respected--especially in a city like Chicago where diversity should be a strength, not a reason for discomfort. After having a difficult time finding a place to eat on July 4th, we made the short walk from Michigan Ave. to Luxbar for a late dinner. The restaurant was very busy, but the hostess was able to get us seated very quickly. We ordered the guacamole with homemade chips, and both were excellent. The guacamole was fresh and delicious. I had the chili, made with prime steak and black beans. It was better than your average chili you find in restaurants. They do put fresh jalapeños in the chili, not the pickled kind, so the heat is real. T had the buffalo chicken salad. The chicken was hand-breaded and had just enough buffalo sauce that you knew what it was. The service was excellent, with Emma making sure that fellow Tennesseans were taken care of. We came here to try their espresso martini and it did not disappoint! It was not too sweet or too bitter - it was just the perfect combination of coffee and sweetness that I love. The bartenders are honestly some of the nicest bartenders I've met in the city! I highly recommend grabbing a seat at the bar. These were nice little bites that came with mustard - Pepperoni pizza: This was more Detroit style pan pizza and pretty tasty. Was is the best pizza I've ever had? No, but come on - it's pizza!!! - Hot fudge sundae: I never order ice cream, but for some reason in my wine buzz this sounded so tasty. The fudge was nice and chocolatey. This sundae was probably enough for 4 people Pros: - Easy to grab a rez a few hours prior. Our party shrank from a 4 top to 2 and they kindly accommodated and didn't give us any attitude about it - Staff were all super friendly - hostess, server, manager. Very cheerful and friendly. I could tell they were busy but the server made the time to make small talk with us - Patio: We were visiting from LA and were expecting cold weather all weekend, but we must have brought that balmy LA weather with us. The night was a sweet spring night, and it was perfect sitting on the patio enjoying the night. Nice to people watch. Honestly I preferred this to the inside, which seemed to be on the loud side - Menu was American classics and bar food. They definitely had some Gibson menu items Cons: - It must have been a busy night, the bathroom wasn't as clean. They even ran out of paper towels and had stocked with napkins instead. I stayed at the hotel across the street and their restaurant was under construction, Luxbar was offering 10% off bills as a compromise. During my stay, I went to Luxbar twice and both experiences were great. The first time I went for dinner with a group of 5. We really appreciated the upstairs seating as the noise level was significantly lower upstairs. Our waiter could have been better as it seemed like he didn't come around that often and it took quite some time for us to be able to order drinks. We put in an order for an app and before we could also order drinks he was walking away, and someone else brought our appetizer back out. However the food was phenomenal! Highly recommend the Steak Frites, the Buffalo chicken salad, or the Lux Club. If it's on the menu as the sandwich of the month, I would highly recommend the Chicken Caprese Sandwich! I had a much much better experience this time around. Although I had a less than ideal experience last time, the seared tuna had me excited to come back. Just as last time, it was amazing and fresh. I also got to try the tuna tacos and they were incredible. LuxBar wows me with their tuna. I tried the Royal burger and the apple bbq chicken sandwich, both were delicious. The coleslaw is fresh and not overly sweet. The french fries are to die for! I don't think I raved enough about them last time. They are perfectly crispy and seasoned well. My royal burger was juicy and cooked to perfection. The macaroni gratin was probably my least favorite dish tonight. Where it lacked flavor it made up in cheesiness, but this was just a random side so I didn't put too much stock in it. Although I was surprised the lack of seasoning it had considering it is partially a Parmesan dish. Service was super fast today and our waitress was attentive. Ryan, the general manager, also stopped by to check in on our table, which was appreciated. Overall, LuxBar won me back with tonight's experience. I will be back for the tuna! read more

The restaurant was fantastic today. Our extended family reserved space on the second floor for a family event. From planning through execution, the staff was attentive, helpful and efficient. Their effort was genuine... they wanted us to have a fantastic time and we certainly did. Every single dish was properly executed in both appearance and taste. It may be difficult to please a party of 24 with 100% success. LUXBAR did it with ease. Finally, the restaurant space was perfect. We were provided a comfortable area within which to socialize and enjoy a fantastic meal. I couldn't ask for anything more. We would like to give us a special shout out to Eric, Nico and Oliver for their fantastic service today. Luxbar -- Late Night Lovin' Done Right! Pulled up after 10PM on a whim and ended up having the perfect intimate night out. The whole space gave grown and cozy vibes--dim lights, chill energy, and delicious bites. I started with a refreshing mojito mocktail and couldn't resist the Wagyu pigs in a blanket--absolute chef's kiss . For the main, the buttery steak frites hit the spot, and my partner's Lux Royale burger was a whole moment . Luxbar is definitely that late-night gem for great food, drinks, and a soft vibe to match. It worked out very well since it was slightly rainy and we could walk on over. I got the salmon and a side of broccoli. It was good not as flavorful as I was hoping it to be. This is a great joint in a trendy part of town! For the location and ambiance, the prices were fairly reasonable, especially for Chicago. The Luxe burger was $17.50 and it was pretty sizeable. My wife and I actually shared it, which they split and plated for us. We each also got a small crock of fries, but it looked like we received more than if we had not split the plate. Very nice gesture by the team there! The burger itself was on point! Very tasty, very fresh, very well cooked and presented. It's one of the few "gourmet" burgers I've had that wasn't falling apart too. Well constructed and presented. We were talked into upgrading the fries to their truffled ones, and that was the right call. So delicious, I couldn't stop eating them! I also ordered the "build-your-own" Old Fashioned. I love the concept, but I couldn't decide on the options. So, I went with the "let the bartender choose" option, just with asking for a single 3" ice cube. Very accommodating! The joint was CROWDED! Even without the standing bar crowd, it was very hard to leave after we were finished. They really packed in the tables and chairs. There's an ample patio out front, though, and what looked to be additional seating upstairs. It wound up being very loud because of this, though, but we had a good conversation still with the table of four. I dug the aesthetic of the place too! It almost had a mix of post-bellum French style, with splashes of art deco scattered about. Very neat décor! Overall, this is a great little joint to get a good meal at a decent price in a relaxing atmosphere, provided you don't mind crowds or noise. Hardly worth detracting a star for, though. Updating! LUXBAR is still as good as ever. Stopped in for a quick dinner on a Wednesday and had the delight of having Jenny as our server. She was so polite and fun; a real treat to have and enriched our experience. The environment was lively, but not too loud. The food was excellent per usual. We both opted for soups tonight. My wife had grilled cheese and tomato soup, and I had their steak and black bean chili. Both were phenomenal. That chili is to die for. A true Chicago classic honestly. I vacillate between rating Luxbar 4 or 5 stars. Two of us ate there again last night. The service and and staff are excellent - always accommodating. The location - just off Rush street on the Gold Coast is great. (Snagging an outdoor table in better weather is great for people watching. The food is great. As noted in my earlier reviews, the Steak Frites ($19.50) is a steal. The Snickers Ice Cream Pie can easily serve 4 ($13.00). There is always a lively buzz in the place, so noise levels are high, making conversation difficult. I wish I could blame the noise on blaring music - but there generally is none. My only negative is that their alcohol prices are high ($17 for mixed drink and $9 for a craft beer), but that, unfortunately, is the norm in downtown Chicago these days. Heartily recommend Luxbar to anyone in - or visiting - Chicago. read more

This was the best brunch I've had yet in Chicago! We got some fruit and aperol spritzs to start, super yum. As a big fan of craft beer, the vintage collection of beers is outstanding. I had a very well preserved 2010 Goose Island Matilda. They have a big selection of bourbon county as well as harder finds from breweries across the US. The bartenders were very knowledgeable and friendly. I live in a neighborhood, with a group of friends, in/or close proximity to the Neighborhood. we have been coming here once a week. But we have agreed this was our last visit. My hamburger was way over cooked. One friend's grilled cheese was hard as rock and a third friend had to send her Reuben back because she could not chew the stale bread. we know there is a lot of restaurant competition in this neighborhood. the fact that we can go to different restaurants because we are all older than 70 years. we don't want to have to walk too far. But so much money on two glasses of wine and food that is not edible, is no longer an option for us. All three of us would even drink three glasses of wine, but, we also come here for the food. So, in conclusion... setting aside the service and the ambience, (both of which we have no problem with) my friends and I have decided to pay that much for food, it needs to be better. I came here late on a Friday night without a reservation and got a table outside. I love the ambiance in Gold Coast and enjoyed sitting outside. The service was good and quick. The food was all very good, although the steak frites were just okay. However, at only $19, they may have been the cheapest steak frites I've seen. I had a glass of Pinot Grigio, and my friends got espresso martinis. Overall, great vibes and a fantastic location. read more
