Our first and last experience at Lupo. We made a reservation tonight at 730. Arrived on time. No hostess to check in with. Had to ask a server to get us the hostess. Was told they were running late. We waited in the common area for 30 minutes. Never approached again. Asked hostess once again what we should expect so we could make a decision about going or staying. Had a vague response and no hint of apology. 10 minutes later we walked out. Wait staff said "have a good night". I understand busy. I understand overwhelmed. But this was poor customer service start to untimely finish. We live in the neighborhood and walked over with friends visiting. It was embarrassing for us and more so for the restaurant. You have lost multiple potential customers. read more

Lupo never disappoints! The menu includes a wide selection of small plates as well as large plates that are fun to share with your entire party. The menu changes every so often so each time you go, you are in for a culinary surprise. Their brunch is also arguably one of the best in Columbus. My husband and I absolutely love this fabulous restaurant. It's worth the price. The food is ah-mazing! The fresh oysters are always delicious and so clean...no bits of shell at all. The appetizers are creative and fun-try the seafood chowder. Entrees are large and very satisfying-the whole branzino fish and the whole chicken are positively addictive. The chef, Todd, is a genius with food and really friendly and fun to chat with. The bartenders Alec and Abby are generous and charming. Louis is our favorite waiter in town. Lupo is the hot ticket right now, and has all the growing pains to show for it. Service is excruciatingly slow, largely because the wait staff is totally disoriented, like deer caught in your headlights. Add to that the fact that the tariff for what are just passable tapas is impressive and you have the potential for mass defections from this restaurant. I really desperately wanted to love this place. It sounded promising -- especially when I heard that the owner had opened it because Columbus really didn't have an authentic tapas place. But there was where the problem started. Fail #1. It's not that the food is bad. It's not -- it's a solid okay. But the entire concept seems confused. When you walk in, the place looks like a mix of a French bistro (table section) and and New England oyster house (bar.) No where did I get a tapas feel. No problem. I didn't want to judge too harshly before we got the menu. The menu was. . .again okay. Fail #2. For a place that wanted to be authentic, I was sad to see that tortilla espanola, patatas bravas, and boquerones were nowhere on the menu. Instead, again, there was somewhat of a hodgepodge of flavors and cuisines. We went for the cod fritters, the fried oysters, the gambas, and the octopus. Fail #3. Everything came out at the same time. No coursing out the plates -- so of course, things got cold. Not to mention the table wasn't huge, so we were trying to figure out how to eat everything without anything falling on the ground or our laps. All of which could have been forgiven, but. . . the food was average. Fail #4 The gambas were cooked perfectly, but instead of being cooked, or at least tossed in the flavored oil, it was clear that they were simply steamed and then placed in the oil. The cod fritters were dry. Nothing had enough sauce. The octopus was the one stand out win. Again, it wasn't terrible, and if we lived in the neighborhood, we may have stopped back in. But it's not good enough to warrant a drive for us. read more

I went to Lupo for brunch on Sunday. It's nice to see a fun, interesting new restaurant at the Mallway. It's reasonably priced and has a great atmosphere. Both myself and my fiance made the wrong choice for our meals: I ordered the Spanish Salad and he got the Po'boy. Both items actually WERE great, except they were both drenched in an extremely overpowering mustard sauce. I enjoy heat for sure, but the burn of the mustard was so intense that I could not taste anything in my salad. It should have accented the other flavors, but it was just way too much. It was like swallowing a mouthful of wasabi. My fiance's sandwich also had a touch of this sauce, according to him. I had tears running down my face and was coughing when our server offered to grab me something else, so I went with the Frittata to go in order to not hold up our entire group. The frittata was fantastic! Really tasty. I had to wait behind for about 10 extra minutes, so maybe ~25 minutes from the time of ordering something else, a little long but not unexpected for busy brunch. I really appreciated our server taking care of that for me. Overall, I would enjoy going back, but think the chef should tweak that mustard dressing/sauce and I will ask beforehand if a menu item has that dressing/sauce to avoid an embarrassing coughing fit. read more

I don't normally leave reviews, but Lupo absolutely deserves 5 stars. Food and drinks were some of the best I've had in Columbus. Perfect menu to order a few different things and share. We did a round of small plates with cocktails, then a round of larger plates with a great bottle of wine our server recommended. Tons of dishes everyone will enjoy (we especially loved the ribeye and the meatballs), but if you're feeling adventurous the octopus and oysters were two of our favorites (best oysters I've had in Columbus). I thought I would give Lupo a try because of the Columbus Monthly article intrigued me. I'm originally from the east coast and love the oyster bars back home. Unfortunately, this is nothing like the oyster bars back home. The atmosphere is great and my wife enjoyed the food she ordered, but I can not recommend Lupo for oysters. read more

Lupo is nestled right in the charming downtown area of Upper Arlington. It's the sister restaurant to La Tavola which is one of our favorite Columbus dining destinations. The same love of fresh, authentic ingredients put together into wonderful combinations of regional cuisine that La Tavola plates every evening shows up strong at Lupo as well. From the first tapa to the last our experience did not waver. Our family friendly dish of their Lamb Shank Paella, after satiating our tapas cravings, was the perfect ending to our journey. Literally everything was delicious. My family could be considered tapas snobs as we've eaten in tapas restaurants around the country and I enjoy making them at home as well with Penelope Casas's tapas cookbook plus a myriad of others. That said, Lupo is on the money. In addition, the same attention shown by La Tavola to presenting great, food friendly, regional wines also appears on Lupo's wine list. Finally, the desserts, made by the owners wife, were mouth watering. Service was excellent with our server having a great understanding of each plate and it's ingredients. The plates arrived in perfect harmony with our dining pace. The setting is relaxing and welcoming. Go to Lupo! You won't be disappointed! read more

Horrible place! Expensive and nowhere close to the charges. The waiter was excellent. It's just the nature of the restaurant what the problem is. This is suppose to be a Spaniard "tapas " place. The tapas are incredibly expensive ($20) per tapa and the serving is insulting. We ordered an octopus tapa, and the serving was a tiny 4" octopus leg, no wider than 1/2". We also ordered a Mediterranean salad, it came on a 5" tiny plate and cost $18 or so. Then the dinner menu was worst. No variety, only a bolognese pasta and duck/rice. Cost was $38 (serving for 2, but not even close to a real 2 people serving). The duck was $27. They also had rye steak at $47!!! The sangria was ok, just ok, but only available was one made from a pink wine, so no red or white sangria to choose from. Oh, $12 each, on a normal red wine cup. To summarize, not a place for tapas. If you want tapas, "Sidebar " downtown Columbus is a real tapas place, much better price and much nicer atmosphere. In a nutshell, "debut and sayonara " read more

I have been extremely excited to try Lupo as I love the neighborhood/location and its concept. It did not live up to my expectation, but it wasn't bad either. I ordered the bread with herbed butter, which was just ok and would've been better if the bread wasn't so greasy. My fingers were wet just from touching the bread- oil overkill. I also ordered the duck confit croquettes which I enjoyed, but the accompanying quince sauce was nearly flavorless and merely decorative. While I appreciate presentation, the duck confit croquettes, although very good, did need a complimentary flavor- more than the quince paste offered. After that, I ordered the pork and clams. The sauce and pork were excellent, but the clams were tough (way over cooked??), and the Lima beans were just disgusting. I can't even believe a talented, creative chef would put those on a plate. They didn't ruin the dish because I could push them to the side, but it was disappointing that those Lima beans were the chef's choice to pair with the pork and that amazing sauce. They were simply inedible and disgusting. Luckily, the pork was amazing. We also ordered the toasts with quince and shaves manchego cheese - meh- nothing to write home about. I was at the soft opening of Lupo, and it was without a doubt some of the best food I have ever had in Columbus. Everything was fantastic, but I have to give special mention to their ribeye which was flawless and paired incredibly well with the Ganuza Rioja. I would also highly recommend the grilled octopus, steak tartare, and papas fritas. I make it to Columbus pretty frequently and I'm looking forward to having Lupo as a regular destination. 5/5 absolutely do not pass this place up. read more
