I have been to this store many times, but have always been intimidated by the large selection of teas. My mom wanted to buy some Christmas gifts here, so I went along. Bad idea.... for my wallet. Since my mom took some time deciding what she wanted, I had LOTS of time to peruse the merchandise. I soon discovered that I could smell the teas and that pretty much sold it. I ended up with a tea strainer, three different teas, and a plan to come back for more. I chose the loose teas, since it seemed so much more sophisticated than getting the ready to use tea bags. I hope I don't mess it up LOL... Strawberry & Vanilla green tea and Vanilla black tea to start off, plus a tropical green tea that I grabbed as an afterthought. When I'm not drinking water, I'm always drinking tea. My love for tea has been since I was in high school when I used it for a caffeine boost. Lupicia was the first tea shop here in Ala Moana. Only recently has a competitor, the national chain, Teavana arrived to compete with Lupicia for tea supremacy. From the tea I've purchased from Lupicia, I find them to be lighter than other brands such as Teavana. It is not necessarily a bad thing as lightness or boldness is ultimately in each person's own taste. My favorites from Lupicia are: Kirara Kiwi flavored Their version of the Ti Guan Yin Orange Oolong Pineapple Oolong All except the Kirara are very lightly flavored so drink accordingly. Prices here are average. It isn't too expensive, nor is it cheap. Holy teabags!! My best friend recently bought me a really nice cast iron tea pot like the ones they use at p.f. changs because I am such a tea lover. Little did I know how deep the rabbit hole of tea goes before I stepped foot in Lupicia! There was literally every flavor I could have imagined. Chocolate banana, Framboise, Muscat, rice tea, any and every kind of fruit and fruit combination, caramel macchiato, etc, etc.. Honestly, for a first timer, it was slightly overwhelming. I just went with the Muscat (I love moscato) and Momo (Peach) teas. I will DEFINITELY be back to get more. The prices are acceptable. It's 8 dollars for 50 grams of loose leaf tea and 7 dollars for ten tea bags. The loose leaf tea comes in an attractive tin. The store is clean, and the salespeople are friendly and willing to let you sample any tea you'd like. I think it's safe to say that I will be a regular! read more

I actually almost enjoyed the last minute Christmas shopping at Lupicia. It was kinda fun unscrewing the tops of the various loose-leaf teas and taking in the different aromas they had to offer. I love the Lupicia brand as a whole. Tea varieties that aren't super sugary or cough medicine bitter. Their main line selection is excellent and they're seasonal/specialty teas are worth hoarding. I'm only reviewing this location. I was begging my fiance to take me here once I knew we were going to Hawaii. We scheduled a whole shopping day and like a kindergartener I jumped up and down when I realized we're going here. Lupicia Hawaii is actually two stores right across from each other. One side is just tea and tea accessories, just like the mainland locations. Across the walkway is another Lupicia storefront with non-tea goods like savory snacks, Lupicia t-shirts, and other souvenirs. Things That Were Awesome: +++Hawaii exclusive tea! Each available scent was a different take on island flavor. Some are fruity, flowery, had pineapple, macadamia nuts, chocolate, and oh the range! Teas come in tea bags, loose leaf tins, and gift set tins. Being the tea fiend that I am I grabbed two gift sets so I can try all the flavors. I also gave my parents a loose leaf bag of Hoku. +++Samples! Like the mainland stores you can try the samples given out when you come in or request for a sample of a tea to sip in a small cup. +++Service. Servers here ask if you need help but they don't harass you. They also somehow know when exactly to be available for help. Things That Were Not So Awesome: ---Boxes of merchandise randomly stacked. Boxes shrunk the already cramped layout of the stores. Made the whole shop look disorganized even though it was Japanese neat. ---Humid. Out of all the shops in Ala Moana this one was somehow the stuffiest. Maybe it was the proximity to the parking lot or the way the wind tunnels move. My fiance looked at me like I was crazy with all the tea and the souvenir tumbler I bought. I've been a customer for years! I can't start my day without a cup of tea, so this is a great spot to pick up some treats to add to my collection. They carry both loose and bagged teas. This is an awesome place to pick up gifts. I prefer giving cash in an unmarked envelope or a gift card, but I've been told it's uncouth. In my opinion, it's far more thoughtful. Cash means I'm not being presumptuous that I have good taste. I don't! I suck at buying gifts and to be honest, it gives me anxiety! When shopping for tea drinkers, this is a sure thing! CUTE tea strainers and other things I didn't know were for tea. I love their teapots, but I know I'm more of a microwaved water in a cup type of gal! Just keeping it real! I never thought I'd be reviewing a tea shop and I'm not surprised there are no other reviews here yet, but Lupicia is AWESOME! I was first tipped off about Lupicia by a colleague from California who is currently in Oregon for an internship (as I am in Hawaii for an internship right now). She emailed me asking for a favor, "Can you get me some teas from Lupicia in Ala Moana and ship them to me? I usually get them from my ex's brother but since we are exes now...that would be awkward." Hmm...a tea shop so good that someone would be willing to pay for it to be shipped to them?? I gotta try this tea if it's that fan-worthy. So I dragged my friend to Lupicia with me, and I was immediately impressed with the vast display of teas with sniffing samples in tins. They also had a sample of a featured tea to taste, which was really good and tempted me to buy it. I bought the teas my friend requested (Lanikai and Ku'uipo) and then bought a bag (Anela) for myself. Their tea is not cheap...but it's definitely high quality tea. Later on I found out there's a Lupicia in San Francisco's Westfield shopping center. I told my friend about it, and she said, in true fan style, "I already know it's there. Went to the "new and improved" Lupicia yesterday for an after-sushi cleanse. I ended up leaving with over $160 worth of tea paraphernalia. Sad day for my bank account lol. First off, they have an excellent selection of green, black, oolong, herbal and decaf teas, along with seasonal and small-batch varieties. If you drink tea, it's impossible not to find something to your liking. As a tea flip-flopper, I'm always looking for new flavors and combinations to keep me interested. At the moment, I'm really in to herbal/cleansing/healthful teas, so that's the primary reason I went in. Unfortunately, they didn't have anything for specific health-related purposes (as opposed to David's Tea, which has teas for immune system support, detoxes, etc.), so I am docking them one star. I can't be the only person who would like to see teas that are good for more than mixing with milk (yuck) and performing ceremonies. Regardless, I bought ginger-black tea (it's good, but not excellent). I do like fondling their tea sets and very expensive teapots. What can I say? I'm turned on by porcelain. Just kidding. I suppose tea and tea equipment make good gifts, but I'd much rather pop a mug of H2O into the microwave than perform a whole ritual just for a darn cup of tea. So I bought a glass mug ($26.50) that came with a metal basket thing. The staff is VERY attentive. I think, at one point, all three of them came up to me in succession asking if I needed help. They were willing to brew a special sample of a tea I was interested in, so props to them for that. They also seemed to know basic knowledge of teas, but I would hesitate to ask them detailed questions. I'm no fashion expert, but their outfits are a bit drab and Amish-looking. When I paid for my tea stuff, they popped a few tea samples (2 individual servings and 1 mini tin) in my bag. I also got to sign up for the free newsletter/magazine thing, different than the mailing lis, because I spent (way) over $30. I think it helped her a little to show off her knowledge of the many teas lupicia has to offer because I did notice she was a new trainee and she did a good job! Yay Lupicia! This store is just like Teavana, except better! Ambiance: To be honest, the layout is a bit confusing. Tea everywhere! It's hard to decide what tea to choose because they have packages of tea bags set up all around the store. Service: The ladies are always very helpful in helping me decide what kind of tea I should get. You can ask "Show me the most bitter green tea." or "Which tea can help me go to sleep?" and they have an answer. They also offer to brew you a tea if you want to try it before you buy it. Price: A bit expensive, BUT the teas that are going to "expire" in a couple months are on sale. All you have to do is stick it in the freezer when you get home. Tea: They have everything! Rice tea, green tea, matcha, chamomile, black tea, tea with fruits in them, tea honey, gift sets, tea pots, tea cups, etc. Prices range from $6-$30. I've been to the store and received gifts from Lupicia. Sorry, but I had to use 2 of their fancy schmancy, nylon (un-green) pkgs, for one cup of tea!! If you like their prices you are way too rich. If you like their teas you are a tea rookie, Lose the weird blends and fake flavors that do not occur in nature. Bleck! Go to Chinatown, get a tea brick or some old, old, old, pkgs. of olong, pu erh, lapsang, why, even the green teas or Korean barley tea. With fermented teas, the older the better. Rich, tart, tannin, ahhh! Slurp! Black when you want flavor, green when you feel like being antioxidant and all, barley tea when you want to feel like a baby cuz it's so soothing. But don't waste your time, taste or money. Of course I get some of mine from a broker in India and each leaf, unfurled in a steaming, seething cup of water is smaller than a child's baby fingernail! I remember I stayed away from Lupicia for the longest time because I was under the impression that they would burn a huge hole in my wallet. I started coming after my sister stated that they're not "that bad". I usually trusts what she says so I decided to venture forth after I developed my fondness for fine teas. Pros -Service- I've been reading around on Yelp and apparently there is bad service among others. Perhaps I visited them on better days because when the staff noticed I was walking around clueless around the shelves they immediately offered me samples of their current teas. After one staff would follow me and offer me different canisters to smell. I was so happy I bought two teas instead of one. What amazed me the most was that the same woman recognized me on my second visit and how I chose the Pierrot tea blend twice. -Tea- The selection is endless. Part of me just wants to ransack their neat drawers just to see all of them. I am usually in favor of the black tea myself, but because of their vast selection, I can always buy for my green tea or Oolong loving friends. I especially love their blends like Yume, Pierrot and Champagne Rose. Their Banana Chocolate was also a great favorite among me and my friends. Whenever I am holding tea parties, I always serve tea from Lupicia. -The Location- The fact that their location is in Ala Moana makes it easy access for me. I can always pick up some tea before I go home. The store is simply beautiful and spacious. I also use the store as a sort of calm place to gather my thoughts. The store is always kept in the best shape. The only con. -The price. It is bloody expensive to buy anything else. I would love to buy their accessories but I simply can't afford it. Their loose leaf tea on the other hand is not as bad though so I won't count this so heavily against them. Every now and then I splurge and buy the fancy gift sets. (Like how I bought some for my Grandparents as a farewell present.) I love coffee, but I absolutely adore tea. There's something about a cup of tea that does something for you that a cup of coffee just can't so my eyes just about lit up when I came upon this store that was packed to the brim with almost every kind of tea imaginable and every knick knack you need to make your tea experience better (or fancier). The store is lined wall to wall with different flavors of teas from black teas to green teas to white teas all in containers for you to sniff prior to purchase. If loose tea isn't your thing they also sell bagged teas and you can request to sample any of the teas that strike your fancy in addition to the tea of the day that they offer you a sample of while you're browsing the store. There's a ton of tea pots, tea pitchers, and other items to help you with brewing available for purchase. In addition there are several teas for sale that the associates advised are only available here and in LA (don't know why but hey its exclusive). The prices are competitive for a specialty shop, and I'm certainly happy to no longer have to pay to ship $100+ in tea from other places and to be able to browse the walls for different teas to my hearts content. read more

This is the only tea company I know that sends samples to their customers!! Lupica is seriously the Mecca of teas, there are so many varieties that it will take a few months before you can try all the teas!! Not to mention, every month there is a new featured tea! The best part about this brand is that it has both loose leaf and bagged teas. On lazy days, I prefer a tea bag than to wash my tea filter for loose leaves lol. It's the perfect place for fickle/lazy tea drinker like myself! I also love that they send me monthly sample teas!! I had always walked by Lupicia and thought of checking it out, but this weekend I finally went in. I was pleasantly surprised. They had tons of teas to check out! On the left side of the store, along the wall, they have lots of tins of teas. You're welcome to open them and smell the tea. From that point, you take a corresponding card and take it to the register. You can buy loose tea or bags, but some of them are only available as loose tea. As I was browsing, one of the employees came up and offered a sample of their decaf Carol tea, which was a strawberry and vanilla flavored tea. It smelled so good! I was happy that the samples were decaf, since my visit was around dinner time. They also had nice displays of gift sets and bags. Currently their displays are mostly Christmas themed, but they had a few standard gift bags. On the table nearest to the register, teapots and accessories were for sale. Some of them are very nice. I can't speak for the quality, but they looked well made. I tried my Sakurambo (black tea with cherry) tea the next morning. The tea bag was nice, very good quality. It smelled delicious, but I liked the Carol sample better. I re-brewed with the same bag and had nice results. I'm happy with my purchase! read more

Lupicia is like the Sanrio store, but for adults. You can't get enough of their teas and will be coming back for more! They don't need a salesman to stand outside their door to bring in customers because the store itself will draw you in easily from either the smell of fresh brewed tea or their lovely decor! The store is surrounded by pretty pastel colors, gift sets and any tea supplies you're looking for. You'll also be greeted with freshly brewed tea ready for you to sample. The sales women there are always graciously offering any advice or help. This store is not cheap, but it's definitely worth it if you're a tea connoisseur or looking for a great gift for someone special! read more

I saw Lupicia while walking through Ala Moana and wanted to go in because it's been a long while since I've been in a tea shop. The employees greeted me warmly and asked if I needed help. I said I was just looking and began smelling all the various tea leaves. Everything smelled delicious. Another employee came by and offered me a sample of an iced tea. The name of it was wedding tea and it tasted good. I bought a ginger tea for my mom, after asking an employee a question about the tea, and bought myself a chocolate tea after another employee explained that it was 50% because of the expiration date on it, but the tea would continue to last. The moment I stepped into this store I fell in love!! All the organized boxes of tea from floor to ceiling are breathtaking as is all the little tea trinkets they have! We bought their special wedding tea favors as gifts for our parents and sponsors at the rehearsal dinner. They let us sample the tea before we bought it and it was delicious! They took the time to wrap each one, gave us gift bags and tags for each one too! They were extremely helpful and patient with us. Customer service was GRREAT! But when you circle the store a couple times, lift the lids to smell some teas, and generally stare in the salespeoples' directions with a helpless look in your eyes to no avail, it's time to cut 'n run and never come back. This is tea heaven!! Sooo many flavors to choose from and you can try most of them if you ask. Cold teas, hot teas, green, black, white, blended, young, old, loose and bags. It's a full on experience and I learn something about tea every time I go there. I easily spend an hour in here and drop about $50 plus. I Love the loose rose, anela, super grade oolong, loose earl grey, grapefruit green tea, champagne cold tea and the list goes on. Tea is a great gift and an ancient way to sped time with a friend. My love for this shop, how do I express it? So many flavors and all of them so spectacular. I love that they have special teas for seasons, imports from Japan, and even HAWAII specific tea. The illustration on the tins are so adorable, heck the tin shape is adorable! It makes for the perfect gift. I got in to loose leaf tea because of this wonderful place, they have mugs and tea strainers that are straight from Japan and so easy to use. They let you taste the tea, smell the tea, LOOK at the inside of the tins. It's like a kid in a candy store! I can't go in without buying something. It's Willy Wonka and the Tea Factory! Some of the tea's are so special, one of my Christmas tea's -- Winter Dream I believe it's called, has adorable sugar stars in it. So when you look at the tea after brewed, it sparkles. I was so fascinated with this when I first bought that tea so long ago, I've been hooked since. They have a tea for everyone. Caffeinated, Decaffeinated, Green, Black, Iced-- doesn't matter! Lupicia covered all the bases, also it's very affordable for under ten dollars a tin. A little hint, anytime you spend over a certain amount of cash in the store (it changes so make sure to ask!) you can be signed up for a free tea a month in the mail! You get a new tea bag every month of different flavors and a magazine that explains what's new that season. Very worth it if you are spending money for the holidays! You might be king before you buy stuff, after that, you are a miserable servant. Yes, the place has lots and lots of teas. It's a lovely Tokyo-based franchise. They have some samples and nice-smelling teas. All good. But don't make a mistake of buying any tea hardware from them. It's expensive. Plus! No returns or refunds. And personal humiliation upon attempt. Number of other customers treated rudely by staff. Not cool. Just for information, cute and expensive glass tea mugs with colourful silicon strainers don't work, particularly with tea sold at store. The tea is too fine and dusty, it goes right through holes and provides a dried-gunk-in-your-mouth experience just when you were hoping to sip a clean delicious liquid. Do avoid those. I found more comfort at Teavana upstairs. They're somewhat hidden, and I almost forgot they existed. But people there seem more professional. read more

A cousin of mine gave us a bag of the Monsieur tea and a cute little tin of the Sakurambo tea...and so began my newest tangent. The Monsieur tea (black tea flavored w/blueberry and vanilla) is outstanding and the Sakurambo (black tea w/Japanese cherry) is also very good. Fortunately, Black Friday was only a day away so I added that to my short list of stores to visit at Ala Moana. I ended up buying a ridiculous amount of tea and went back a SECOND time after work that day to get more - unfortunately, the 20% off sale was no longer in effect. Had the Champagne Rose last night and it was sooo good. The smells are just amazing. It's like aromatherapy. Also had a cup of the Cookie tea (black tea with almond) with a splash of evaporated milk this morning and it was really good. If you brew it as suggested on the bag it comes out almost coffee-ish; although, I prefer it a little less strong. The most organized looking tea shop I've ever seen on first glance. However, it was very busy when I went, so I couldn't figure out how best to find the teas I wanted... not sure how they were categorized if I wanted a certain flavour. I also love that they have prepackaged tea bags of their best sellers in case you just wanted to grab and go. IT'S SO OVERWHELMING HERE! I seriously had to do 2 test runs of coming into the store and checking it out before going in a 3rd time, but this time as a serious customer. I love tea, and once you have fresh loose leaf tea, you're spoiled for life. Those "Celestial Seasons" or whatever from the grocery store will no longer satisfy. And that's when you turn to Lupicia. I needed to purchase a few items as gifts and tea was one of them. This store is located on the ground floor of the Ala Moana Center. When we walked inside, a lady asked us if we wanted a sample of the tea that they're promoting. Of course we said yes. Hubby and I, each got a cup. When my kids were about to grab a cup, the lady mentioned to us that there's caffeine in it and asked if it's okay to give it to our kids. We told her that we don't want our kids to drink anything with caffeine so she immediately offered us another tea that's caffeine free. After we drank our teas, we walked around the store for a while before making my final decision. Due to the wide selection of teas they had on stock, I didn't know which one to choose. The same lady that gave us sample, came over to give me some guidance. She told me that there's a whole wall full of tea leaves that we can smell before making our final decision. After she said that, we went crazy. We pretty much smelled every single tea leave they had on hand. I ended up choosing 3 kinds of tea leaves. While standing in line to pay, the same lady came by to tell me that they're doing some sort of promotion, where you buy $30 worth of tea and if you live in the U.S., they will send you 6 months worth of samples. Okay...I left the line and went to choose 2 more tea bags. I eventually ended up staying at the store for over 30 minutes. We have lupicia here but I wanted to stop in and grab my mom some "only found in HI" tea. First of all, this place is huge! Its on two sides...two stores! The ladies inside were not that helpful in helping me pick out tea, but they were very good about giving us samples they had. Thus, I opted for the tea mix and grabbed the choco mac nut tea for me. I like lupicia in general because they have unique tea combos but they are not overly sweetened and overpowering to the point you cant taste the tea in there. It's pricey yes, but you don't purchase your tea without really knowing if you like it. It also makes great gifts! They offer you tea when you walk in and samples of any of the other teas you'd like to try (we tried 2 other types of jasmine teas). The lady helping us was extremely knowledgeable and was looking to please. I highly recommend Lupicia. The only thing I had an issue with was the layout. It felt like two separate stores because well it essentially was at one point. They take up two individual spaces so we weren't sure if they were going to scold us for trying to go into the other part of the store with product in our hands (maybe thinking we were stealing?). But, like others have said, spend 30 bucks get a free newsletter and free tea samples! And honestly, you can spend that on a little for yourself and some gifts easily. And spend time while you're there smelling and taste testing their awesome tea creations. At 8-10 dollars a can of tea bags it's not something you wan't to be only half sure you like. read more

I LOVE Lupcia. I LOVE tea in general and what a fabulous place to buy tea. Their presentation and packaging is just perfect. And I love how you go around sniffing all the teas :) ahhhh .... sniffing teas .... I think the Hawaiian blends make great gifts for people back home - again - live the packaging. I personally love the deeply flavored black teas - like chestnut and cookie. I purchased a number of dark teas this time and can't wait to try them at home! read more

I love this place! I wanted to get a gift for my doctor because he loves tea. Perfect place came here with my husband and was greeted immediately with a sample of green oolong tea. It tasted cool and refreshing. I decided to leave with 4 bags. It is not cheap but the flavors are all to exotic. The customer service was superb I believe she was Japanese National still in college I think but I didn't quite get her name. She was really patient and explained the popular ones the customers will like. Fast forward one month later I'm coming in with my sister I told her I wanted to stop here to get tea. I drink in the morning and the evening. Once again it's that same person with great customer service I'm gonna get her name next time but if you want to know she worked on Monday June 18 at 2:30pm. I walked out with 4 bags again. Definitely will be back!!! read more

One of the best places to get tea on island. I definatly recommend trying some of their hawaiian inspired teas here. they are not just for tourists ya know :) I love the look of this place after the renovations. I wish they had every tea on the boxes above though. they are up there iust taunting me. If you're a tea lover definatly stop on by, you'll definatly find something you fancy read more
