    Inside the BBQ pork buns
    Lisa L.

Cash only! There are a few tables and seats, but it's more of a takeout place. There was a short line that moved fairly quickly. The staff was friendly. Tried the egg tarts and baked BBQ pork buns. I like that the egg tarts have a flaky crust. The buns were decently sized and had tasty BBQ pork filling.

Edit: $2.50. Feb 2026 $2.15 Bbq pork buns. July 2023. Damn inflation. $1.95 BBQ pork buns. June 2023. Same goodness as always. Closed mondays. Call ahead if you want to reserve more than a dozen

This bakery has so many delicious goodies but one that stands out is their BBQ Baked Pork Bun. This bakery has been a Richmond District staple for so many years and it deserves all of the stars and respect it can get. It's a cash only business and I honestly love that so much. $2.50 for one bun. Who can beat that? You'll often find people playing board games along the sides of the store. It's a consistent ambiance that withstands the ever-changing city of San Francisco. Lung Fung Bakery, never change!

    Baked Char Siu Bao

Oh my gosh, the char siu baos here are soooo good! My companion would come here growing up, and after our crazy New Year's Eve, he was craving a char siu bao to start the new year. I'm not the biggest fan, but the baked ones here are everything! We arrived on a dreary New Year's Day. The small bakery is super casual, with not much going on decor-wise, and focuses more on takeout. They have their items on display, so it was a quick grab-and-go for us! So the char siu baos are what you need. I was never a fan of the steamed ones, since they were a bit too doughy at times and had little meat. But, I have learned to appreciate the baked ones because, wow, Lung Fung's is so soft and pillowy, and the portions of the meat are perfect. It's the ideal amount for a light meal or snack and is reasonably priced! I highly recommend Lung Fung Bakery if you're in Richmond and craving a char siu bao. Go for the baked ones, you won't regret it! Find them off Clement with street and residential parking nearby.

The star is the classic BBQ Pork Bun - perfectly fluffy with a savory-sweet filling. The Egg Tart is also a must, with a beautifully creamy custard in a flaky crust. Don't miss the hidden gem: the Pineapple Bun with Char Siu. The contrast of the sugary, crumbly topping with the savory roast pork is exceptional. A no-frills, traditional Chinese bakery with just 5 small tables. It's cramped and utilitarian, best for a quick, authentic breakfast or takeaway coffee and tea. Not a place to linger. Straightforward and efficient, focused on keeping the line moving. Don't expect leisurely table service; it's order, eat, and go. Conclusion: Lung Fung is a destination for its superb baked goods, not its ambiance. The BBQ Pork Bun and Egg Tart live up to their fame, and the Pineapple Char Siu Bun is a delightful surprise. Go for a fast, delicious, and authentic taste experience, but be prepared for very limited seating. Highly recommended for food; just manage your space expectations.

This is a small but very popular Chinese bakery, with lines that snake out the door. At least the line does move. We got red bean puff, walnut cookie, and merry cake (aka old wives' cake). Cash only.

One of my favorite coworkers is always bringing me goodies. I've never had a pastry like this. It smells so good. I can't comment on the service because I didn't pick it up myself, but according to him they're fast and efficient and the pastries are always fresh.

My brother always brings me their goodies when he surprise visits me at work and I have completely fallen in love with their Chinese baked goods. Everything I have tried so far has been top tier and easily above par compared to most spots in the city. From what I have seen, their prices are fair and competitive with other well-known bakeries. The egg custard tarts and BBQ pork buns are my absolute favorites here. They are made properly and well. Not too sweet and just the right balance. This bakery makes all the tradition Chinese baked goods and more. I have had their items three times so far, and the quality has been consistently great each time. I am planning to visit soon, but I might have to stop myself from ordering way too much! :D

Came here to try the BBQ pork bun and it was delicious! I actually preferred the pineapple bun with bbq as it had a little more crisp on the crust. Lucky enough to get warm buns, but the egg tarts and regular pineapple bun were also excellent. Cash only and waited probably 15 minutes in line with 6 groups ahead of me just slightly outside the door when I arrived. The cashier was taking and filling the order, answering calls, running the cash register (cash only!) so it was just a little slow and chaotic - old school style. I'm a fan and the prices were very reasonable - will be back to explore more of the menu!

    FYI

Some good friends spent the day in SF, and were kind enough to bring home and give us some egg tarts. The crust was a bit thicker but very flaky and buttery. The smooth and creamy egg custard was not overly sweet but delicious. Thanks again J&L! We'll have to check them out personally the next time we're in the city! Support your local business.

    Becky V.

Sometimes there will be a line especially during lunch hour. Could be about a 5-10min wait. Helps one person at a time. Tell them what you want and how many pieces. Know by the time you get to the front so it can be efficient and you pay and keep the line moving Egg tarts are popular and well made here. Egg is creamy and soft texture, the crusty flakes are soft and yummy just right Cocktail bun also popular here Seniors play Chinese chess at the tables, their usual hangout spot. A good community spot really. Casual

This time, I came prepared and arrived at 10am and mission accomplished! Beef Birria Pain Suisse -- 9/10 This tasted exactly like a birria taco wrapped in buttery puff pastry form. Super flavorful, rich, and flaky. My only minor complaint was that the consommé soaked through the bottom a bit, so it lost some crunch, but the flavor more than made up for it. Baklava Bun -- 8/10 Such an innovative pastry. It had all the warm, nutty, spiced flavors you'd expect from baklava while still feeling like a proper laminated pastry. Pistachio Cardamom Sugar Croissant -- 9/10 Best sweet option of the bunch. The exterior was perfectly flaky and crunchy, while the pistachio cream filling was rich without being overwhelmingly sweet. The cardamom added a really nice aromatic touch. Pork Bun Bearclaw -- 10/10 My favorite item by far. It tasted like a baked char siu bun crossed with a buttery puff pastry. Savory, slightly sweet, and incredibly satisfying. Twice Baked Biscoff Croissant -- 4/10 Unfortunately way too sweet for my liking. If you're a huge Biscoff fan you might enjoy it more, but it was overpowering compared to the balance of the other pastries. Overall, definitely worth the hype. Just make sure to go early unless you want to risk staring at empty pastry trays. The rotating menu keeps you on your toes and already has me wanting to come back to see what they will come up with next.

Even so, they were refreshing that pastry case so that I was not without options. So many amazing-looking things, so I got 3 things just for myself: Chocolate Banana Almond Croissant $5.25: The classic, I had to try. And it was so good!! I thought it might be too rich, but I actually found it to be quite balanced. I loved the fresh mashed banana/banana purée inside, and it went really well with the chocolate. I didn't get a ton of almond flavor comparatively, but I appreciated the coating on the top for a heartier crunch in addition to the croissant flakiness. Like everyone else, I would definitely recommend this one! Passionfruit Bostock $4.25: The staff person helping me told me this was a good option, so I was happy about that. I would agree! It has a beautiful crisp on the outside and a moist crumb inside. The passionfruit flavor was really nice and not too strong. I believe they rotate different flavors of this one, so I'd definitely want to try more. Bostocks on the whole are underrated, and I think they have just the loveliest texture. All-in-One Cake: This is so creative. I was going to stop at the above two pastries, but when the staff person said that this cake was quite literally made up of all the other cakes seen in the case, I was already sold. How cool and creative and reduce-reuse-recycle is that!!!?? I love! And it was such a fun eat! I love how they added crust at the bottom and a gorgeous chocolate layer on top to tie everything together. And every bite was a little different: some fruity, some nutty, some crunchier. Super cool. I was able to nab a table and work a little bit, which was nice. It's a good vibe inside with a little hustle and bustle, but still cozy overall. I'll be back!

Pineapple King is a place I absolutely have a love-hate relationship about. I like how innovation the buns are, but the ordering process - regardless of whether I waited in line or I ordered in advance - has been very disappointing. I placed online orders in May 2021, April 2022, October 2022, June 2023, January 2025, and then today. (Thanks to my email which reminded me of the dates) Every single time I had to wait extra time for my previously placed online order to be ready. After several times of waiting for an extra 10 minutes, I decided to give them extra time to prepare the buns. It simply did NOT work. They always, and I mean always, asked me to wait for 5 more minutes. 5 minutes passed, and the order was still not ready. The average wait time has been 10 minutes in addition to the announced pick-up time. You might want to say, oh, I would like you to receive your buns warm and fresh. Thanks. But if a customer is late, they don't deserve warm and fresh buns. On the contrary, for us who are on time, why do we have to wait for extra time? Please consider adjusting the estimated pick-up time if you are super busy. I understand your store gets busy, and congratulations about that. Please ask your staff to give us a more accurate "extra wait time" because we customers are busy too. Our time is no less valuable than yours. Besides, I understand that you need to check our photo ID during pick-up. Please be consistent with your policy. While I was waiting by the pick-up window, I noticed there were customers who were not asked for their IDs, and they actually picked up their order after a 2-minute wait. Questions can be raised if you only enforce your policy either randomly or only towards several customers. After a few disappointing visits, our family are sad to say that this will be the very last time being your customers. How you run your business just don't align with our values. I do wish you all the best in your business. Thank you for reading my comment.
