I went to Luna on a double date last Tuesday and I was expecting a great experience and sadly I didn't get anything close to what I had anticipated.
We called beforehand and made a reservation for the early evening for the four of us, and when we arrived the parking lot was full so we had to park across the street. No big deal there, but once we got inside, and stood by the host desk we were ignored for five minutes before the two people in front of us even took our name or acknowledged us.
Finally we gave our name to a woman at the desk and ended up standing there a few minutes longer before being seated. Once at our table it only got worse. We sat in the back furthest left corner of the restaurant and it seemed our table was an "out of sight, out of mind" location, since no one took our drink order for another 15 minutes. We did get water nearly right away, thankfully, because our little corner was like an oven. We were all sweating and uncomfortable just being in our chairs. Thankfully, a passerby server saw me fanning myself with my menu and turned on the ceiling fan above us.
When we finally got a server to our table, we all needed water refills and we didn't have a drink menu for our long wait, so the server acted annoyed we didn't know what we wanted to drink. We eventually got a drink menu and ordered some drinks which took another 10 minutes to get to our table. I ordered the margarita, which was tasty, my boyfriend ordered a gin and tonic, as did the other male of the party, and his date ordered a "Luna drop" martini which was also good tasting. the heat prevailed though...and the ice in our drinks melted so quickly it was hard to just sip and enjoy them. We all felt like out was a race against time to taste our drinks before the ice melted.
So in this time we order our starter salads which are all $9 a piece for small dinner salads. When they arrive 10 minutes later or longer, they're flavors are great. Very tasty and pretty presentation. We all order our meals and end up waiting about 30 minutes for a kobe tri tip steak medium rare, a salmon fillet, a scallop dish, and a lamb burger done medium rare. The upside is that the dishes were very tasty. The lamb burger was the cheapest and ended up being the biggest portion, the tri tip and salmon were fairly big, but my dish in particular had only 3 scallops and a beef broth like "soup" with lentils and greens on top for 27 dollars. I was pretty upset the scallops were small and the "soup" tasted like beef so it was kinda contradictory to the seafood flavor the scallops obviously have.
We ended up ordering wine at dinner and spared ourselves the trouble of anything with ice (since it was still really hot), and they were all decent, but very pricey for what they were. We skipped desert just because of the sheer price, and the almost 3 hours spent in uncomfortable chairs and heat. Our bill was a hundred per couple, and while the food was good, the service, portions, and snooty attitude from the staff and clientele in general will keep me from going back, unless someone else is paying. read more
