This place is amazing! The waitress was really quick with our drinks and our food came out fast too! I got one of the specials of the day which was the salmon with Korean sauce on top. Oh my! It was a fulfilling delicious dish all around!! The salmon was cooked to perfection. The coconut rice was mouth watering and the vegetables and sauce were so delicious!! Solid food choice. I got Shrimp and grits which included andouille sausage - I loved it. don't know if I've ever had sausage in this dish but it really added a nice flare. The waitress was the kind who manages 8 tables while looking completely genuine and patient with each. She was kind and easygoing from start to finish. Food came in a very reasonable time (maybe 20min after we ordered). My wife got the "mixed grill" kebab and raved about how perfectly the meat was cooked. One kid got grilled cheese, which looked classic and perfectly cooked on Texas toast or similar, and the other got cheese quesadilla which looked burnt but my kid didn't seem to care, lol. They both sad the fries were crispy and excellent. My only (small) complaints were the almost frozen salad dressing (it did eventually thaw), the burnt quesadilla, and the warm red wine that I wished had been chilled just a bit. Ordered the Italian pasta salad, and asked for chicken to be added. When I arrived home w the food, there was no chicken. That's certainly not the end of the world, though - mistakes happen. What prompted me to write this negative review is the quality of the pasta salad itself - which, unlike forgetting a customization, is indicative of a deeper/systemic issue with how the restaurant honors the customer's expectations of value for their money. If I'd gotten the same salad from a cafeteria somewhere and paid half the price, I would have no issue w the dish. But if that's what I had wanted, I wouldn't have ordered from Lulu's - presumably, a more costly dish from a "nice" restaurant would be a step up. Not the case here. The ingredients were lackluster, to say the least. The bell peppers looked and tasted like the prepackaged chopped ones you can get fresh or frozen at the grocery store. My guess by the texture is that they had been frozen. The black olives were the sliced kind you can get in a cheap can - tasted more like salt than olives. There were three slices of a tasteless Roma tomato, which is especially egregious considering the fact that this time of year there are amazing, bursting-with-flavor local tomatoes everywhere you turn. The almond slices were soggy, which I didn't know was possible. Absolutely not worth the trip to the restaurant and the ~$15 (with tax and tip) that it cost. The only thing saving this from a one star review is the lemon oil on the pasta, which was nice. It's one thing to grab a mediocre pasta salad at the Ingles down the road, and pay accordingly. It's another to plan for a nice treat and end up with something like this salad. I'm very disappointed and won't be returning to Lulu's anytime soon. read more

I have been eating at Lulu's for over 20 years. Every time I have been there since new owners have taken over I have been incrementally disappointed. On my last visit my husband and I ordered what we have ordered at least 100 times: Pasta salad ala Greque for me and Italian Pasta Salad for him. Thankfully they have kept these very popular dishes on the menu. We were shocked to see how small the servings had become--maybe half the size we were accustomed to. I mean, how expensive is pasta??? The most shocking aspect of the meal, however, was that our servings were cold. I know that this is called a pasta salad, but it is supposed to be WARM pasta salad. The menu clearly states that the pasta is supposed to be warm. It was COLD. I took mine home and warmed it up, the way it is supposed to be. And from now on I will stick to my own version. read more

I ordered the Thai chicken noodle soup. It had just the right amount of heat for a cold, dank, drizzly day. My lunch partner ordered the 3 cheese toasted sandwich and sausage and was very pleased with her choice. No, there was no bland processed cheese in the sandwich. We spent 3 hours and were never pressured to give up the table. IF the restaurant had been busy then we would have moved on to another location for a coffee. read more

We visited Lulus for the 2nd time on our anniversary. We were not happy with our food the first time we went, but we do believe in 2nd chances. The wait staff was lovely and the specials sounded delicious. The reality was terrible. My husband's steak was so charred on the outside, that the rare inside tasted burnt. My mahi was also overcooked with a tough outside and dry inside. Had it been an inexpensive restaurant, we might have shrugged it off, but Lulu's is not inexpensive. I hope the owner reads this because he needs to know what his kitchen is producing. read more

Ordered take out when I arrived they had accidentally given mine to someone else. I felt so bad for the hostess literally getting accused and yelled out by like 5 people in front of customers. It was an honest mistake. Waited for my food and got home parts of it were missing. Lulus just isn't the same quality over $20 for a pasta dish I expect old Lulus quality. We dropped by Lulu's on our way home for the Christmas holiday, arriving at the restaurant right around 6pm. The place was already fairly busy, both on the patio, in the bar, & in the main dining room. We were seated quickly by the hostess. I scanned the drink menu & ordered a Highland Ale, but was a little disappointed that they didn't carry anything a bit more local from a Sylva, Waynesville, or Bryson City brewer. My wife and I then ordered the same thing: French Onion Soup & a Wedge Salad. As we ordered, our server apologized for not having water at our table at that point. It seems the kitchen was out of clean glasses, despite it being only 6pm. This was a portent of bad things to come. The French Onion soup arrived, and the server immediately apologized that our cheese had "sunk to the bottom." We quickly discovered the reason: There was neither bread nor croutons in the soup. We flagged down the server and she apologized, asking if it was ok if she brought a bowl of croutons for us. It being Christmas and all, we were in a fairly jolly & upbeat mood, so we said "Sure!" (I should note at this point that the server was upbeat, friendly, & helpful, but also told us that she'd only been on the job for two weeks.) As she walked away, we both tasted the soup...and notes that it had no taste at all. What our first spoonful had skimmed was in fact not beef broth at all, but actually was from a liquid layer of tasteless oil that covered the top of the broth. We looked at each other and came to an agreement: The Soup would be sent back. We flagged down the server, explained our complaint to her, and she quickly agreed with our dilemma. She offered to substitute an Italian Sausage Soup, and I'll note that when it arrived, it was indeed very tasty. Our wedge salads were solid: ample lettuce, good Roquefort dressing, and lots of bacon. No complaints there. So, to sum up: The French Onion Soup was inexcusable. The lack of glassware at 6pm was perplexing, and the server was pleasant and helpful, but seemed to need a bit more training or coaching. Our bill came to around $26, but we tipped the server $20 at the table & $5 on the charge card since it was Christmas and she was very nice. The kitchen problems and the lack of training aren't her fault. We'd probably go back to Lulu's to give them another shot, but the margin for error on our next visit is really razor slim. read more

My husband and I had a very disappointing experience at Lulu's. The martini I ordered came half full and wasn't very tasty. We went at around 6:30 or 7 and they'd run out meatloaf. The server (also the manager?) seemed super annoyed when my husband asked if he could have a steak to replace it. Again, server did it with annoyance and hesitancy. It was half fatty and not great. Pork belly appetizer was average. The grits that came with weren't hot. I mentioned to the server we were disappointed when we were leaving and rather than apologize and act like he cared he shrugged it off. Never going back. read more

Went here for dinner and the owner was too "friendly" towards the females in the establishment. Listening to him berating a female server for not looking good in her outfit honestly ruined my appetite. If you have such a problem why don't you offer uniforms or have a proper dress code instead of informing the poor servers when they arrive. Was also told from previous staff that the owner takes 15% of each servers total tips. Completely illegal and unprofessional! Honestly I was disgusted before I even got my food, I hope the females in this establishment know that they deserve a boss who truly shows respect and professionalism. Do better. read more

My daughter and I have been here three times now and while last time was spot on tonight not so much. Well at least my dinner wasn't . It was a trio seafood dinner special with shrimp, mahi and scallops. They were pan seared then finished with a delectable scampi (maybe panko too) butter in the oven. Every morsel of the seafood was divine. The sides? A very bland pile of rice pilaf and two chunks of under cooked bordering on cold broccoli. No sauce, no butter, just underwhelming. The contrast between the brilliant seafood and the *beige* sides was blinding. I know Lulu's can and does do better than this and it shouldn't stop you from eating here because eye on the prize the seafood was fabulous and ultimately that's all I wanted (and the bread and my harvard old fashioned!) read more

Not sure why the reviews were mediocre because Lulu's was fantastic! An artsy little gem, decked out for the holidays. My husband and I took our 2 teens there for dinner. Our server was on top of everything. We had the Beef Bourguignon, the seared scallops, the ribeye, the noodle bowl and the chicken piccata. All of it was amazing! The last time I took my kids to a nice place for a special meal I said I'd never do it again because they complained and said the food was just ok and it cost us an arm and a leg. So, basically it was wasted on them because they didn't appreciate it. This time at Lulu's, however, they ooohed and ahhhed over everything. It was truly a special evening. We've been talking about it for days. My daughter had the brownie to go. It was coated on top with brown sugar. They told us to warm it in the microwave and gave us a separate container of whipped cream. Insanely delicious! read more

We stopped for lunch on our way back from Asheville. We had been there several times before, mostly at dinner time. We both had a hamburger and it was absolutely the best I have ever had. The patty was cooked perfectly, just a bit crispy on the edges and the brioche bun was very fresh and perfectly toasted. We don't often eat burgers but we were glad we tried them. read more

I had never been to Sylva before and found the town very nice. The best part of Lulu's is that they have several vegetarian selections. And, not just salads and vegetables, they have dishes with tofu or tempeh (some restaurants think they can pacify a vegetarian by offering vegetable side dishes or salads). I had a DELICIOUS vegan wrap with tempeh, rice, and lettuce in it; it came with a good tahini sauce. It was so tasty. My friends (both meat-eaters) had some slab of pork that came with black beans and plaintains. They have ordered that before before and said it is delicious. Very reasonable prices; my sandwich was only like $8-something. I love Lulu's Cafe! I'll be back! read more

Walking in, the decor is unique which is cool since you do not feel like you are in a chain restaurant. Everything on the menu looked good and the only problem was second which dish to have. Also, it's not a large menu so they can focus on the few dishes done right. If you get the chance, get the jalapeño and cheddar grits! Amazing! Enjoyed those more than the steak. We detoured while driving to Asheville for lunch. Our lunch was really delicious and reasonably priced. I'd take a detour off Rte 74 just to eat there. Our waitress was terrific, too. Actually, "detour" is misleading. If you are driving to/from Asheville on Rte 23 to 74, it's just about as fast to go through Sylva as it is to stay on the highway. But a caveat. The building is run down and it smells a bit in spots. Restrooms are so-so. read more

Had dinner twice there recently while I was in Sylva. First time had a shrimp dish and it was ok. Price was about 80 bucks for two dinners and two drinks. The second night I had the salmon/ over cooked veggis/ under cooked. My partner had chicken breast; funny thing was one was soft and cut with a fork and the other I thought we would have to use a chain saw. Her veggis were under cooked as well. The price for two dinners and two drinks was close to 90 bucks that night. I will say this, the crab appetizer I will give 5 stars. (very good) The service was slower than slow. Ordered a drink and ten minutes later was still waiting. Ordered a second loaf of bread and was told it was in the oven and it never showed up. I don't usually write things like this but for the money,, 80 the first night and 90 bucks the second; I will never go back there. read more

Located in downtown Sylva, it's an old old storefront restaurant. They have some outdoor seating in front. Their A/C is suspect, so outside might be your best choice. Their food is quality and priced well. We generally split an entree. There IS a plate charge for splitting. However, you get TWO salads, TWO side dishes with your meal (one for each), and they split the entree. For the price, it is a good way to not overeat. Having eaten there twice, I find it is a comfortable, eclectic restaurant that is on my dinner radar. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Tried Lulu's for a late lunch on a drizzly Monday. There were only a couple of other customers so this was clearly not the same ambiance as you might experience on a weekend night. Our server was very attentive; kept our tea and water full and helpful with the menu. We really enjoyed our lunch. I had a delicious French Dip (beef); wife had lightly battered cod tacos; teen daughter had a Thai-inspired noodle bowl with chicken. The warm humus app was very good. Thai chicken soup was good but noodles were very over done, almost disintegrated, and the broth was very thick, not like the typical coconut based broth. I wouldn't order again. 2 friends got the snapper, lovely presentation and the potatoes and green beans were solid, but the snapper was so overcooked it was barely edible. It was literally like cutting through a tough piece of pork chop and the skin was burnt and rubbery. My friend commented it was the worst piece of fish he'd ever choked down. We would have sent the two snapper entrees back but our server was not having a great night. We nicely reminded her about bread we ordered after about 20 min wait (appetizer had already been devoured) and her demeanor changed from pleasant to angry in an instant. When she presented the bread she literally tossed it on top of the appetizer glass plate and turned and left. The four of us were stunned. Hence, we didn't dare complain about the snapper later in the meal. The remainder of the meal our server was curt and not pleasant to deal with. It was not particularly busy so we really didn't understand the treatment. I probably wouldn't try it again given the snapper preparation and the poor treatment by the server. read more
