Inside the restaurant, it was nicely decorated with original 19th century decorations. I ordered a "surf and turf" meal- filet and shrimp with a Caesar salad. The Caesar salad was one of the best I've ever had but my steak was chewy and not flavorful at all. I didn't eat all of it. For the price, it wasn't a good steak. The house salad my father received was over the top and piled high to where it didn't even look good and it was difficult to eat. It was falling off the plate and he told the waitress it was a terrible presentation. We even noticed other people receiving their salads were wide eyed and unsure of their plates. Needless to say we were not impressed and will not go back.

We had my in-laws in tow, so I'm reporting the opinions of 4 people. My wife and her dad got the country fried steak. They said it was okay, but nothing special and they wouldn't get it again. My MIL and I both got the Meatloaf sandwich. I got mine on a hoagie bun and my MIL got hers on Texas toast. We both enjoyed our meatloaf sandwiches. Mine was worth going back for another. My MIL also enjoyed half of hers and gave me the other half. The Hoagie bun was definitely the better decision. This is a cheap diner with cheap diner food. The atmosphere is just what it looks like in the pictures and it's exactly what we were looking for. The staff is very friendly. Our waitress tried to sell us some of their homemade desserts, but, unfortunately we already had ingredients and plans for an apple tart, back at the cabin. We will definitely visit this place again, on our next trip. I'll get another meatloaf sandwich, (it was really outstanding) my wife will get something other than the fried steak and we'll both grab a couple of those good looking homemade desserts they had in their display case. We spend a lot of money eating out, when we travel, so I always sprinkle in a couple of cheap places, in order to afford a few pricier, more upscale places. In any event, there was a wait for a party of four. The bustling atmosphere tells you that they're doing their best to serve a restaurant packed full of people. The woman with us asked lots of questions about gluten, and what was available. I have a severe gluten intolerance myself, so I was interested. The Manager was informative, and tried to be helpful, but was clear that there was a possibility of cross-contamination. Based on his responses, she decided she would not eat the food. I went ahead and ordered the egg breakfast with gluten-free toast and grits. Hubby ordered the French Dip; he felt it was good. But truth be told, we both felt a little ill when we got home. I blamed my issue on a highly likely, but slight, cross-contamination. This could be a significant problem for those with gluten intolerance. We were unsure what might have caused hubby a problem, since he's not gluten intolerant. He would give it another try. I think it's worth visiting, if you don't have gluten intolerance.

They had a young one-man musician performing, and while I can't remember his name, he did an excellent job. He honestly ended up being our favorite live entertainment of the entire trip. His performance was one of the reasons we wanted to come back. On our second visit for the Fourth of July, we were excited to catch the advertised live band. The sign said they would start at 7:30, but they were just beginning to set up at that time and didn't look close to playing until much later. We were also a little disappointed that Friday karaoke wasn't happening because of the holiday weekend. We had really been looking forward to it. That said, the food absolutely made up for it. The chicken wings were outstanding--easily some of the best wings we had during our trip. The pork rinds were another surprise favorite and are perfect for sharing while enjoying a drink. CJ's has that laid-back, small-town mountain vibe that's easy to appreciate. If you're passing through Bryson City, it's a great place to stop, relax, and grab some food and drinks. My only recommendation is to call ahead if you're planning your evening around karaoke or live music, just to make sure the schedule is accurate.
