Lucky Wishbone I would say has the best burger in town! I sometimes wonder if it's because I grew up eating them? There bread is always super soft, and produce is fresh. Onions are diced and not rings just another nice thing. They have the best fried onion rings! Batter does not stay on well but they are so crunchy sweet and tasty. Fries are super good also, shoe string type and I feel always salted to perfection! Meat is always very moist and there patties are hand pressed fresh. A must stop burger shop! Hands down the most delicious chicken of all the Northern Hemisphere, maybe the world! A local favorite, this diner retains its charm with aviation memorbilia and original architecture circa 1960. Great Fried chicken, awesome local joint! Nice environment. Awesome pictures on the wall of old military aircraft which is perfect considering it is next to Elmendorf AFB and Merrill Field. Had my first sip of my fresh strawberry malt. Excellent. Looking forward to fried chicken! (Pre-dinner tip) Now that I have had the dinner, I will say it is not the best chicken I have ever had, but it is not the worst. Very nice coating and very juicy. (Not too difficult since it is fried) One key to the great quality is that they fly their chicken in fresh, never frozen. The corn muffin finished the meal well. The french fries were standard shoe-string fries, nothing to rave about. Finished with great 50's and 60's music playing softly in the background, I would definitely come back with friends and family. A great place to enjoy good fried chicken. Love!!! I make a point to eat a cheeseburger every time I'm visiting Anchorage. Comfy atmosphere, busy but never to long of wait. Expect a plain ole juicy flavorful cheeseburger. I've tasted the chicken but go for burger instead which I think it is the best I've ever had. read more

Great chicken! I pretty much always get Mom's meal. Chicken piece sizes are kinda hit or miss. Sometimes they're tiny, sometimes they're pretty large. But always the best fried chicken in Anchorage. I was advised against ordering the pan-fried chicken so I went here with my husband to get a burger. We both ordered the jumbo double cheese burger. Burgers tasted like any ol burger I could've made up in my kitchen. Nothing special. He got onion rings as a side and I got fries. Fries weren't anything too brag about; ordinary shoestring fries, no salt, super bland. The one complaint we do have is the onion rings. Super soggy. Did y'all even fry them? Batter on the onion rings fell right off as soon as it was picked up. If you're going to make onion rings, make them right. Definitely wasn't worth $6.50 for them. Other than that, everything was on point- food came out in a timely manner, waitress waited on us as soon as we were seated, and food came out hot. We really REALLY wanted to have some LW before we left, but we're also wary because Covid. The moment we drove up, we knew all would be fine. The instructions for ordering were clear, right from the car. The person taking our order was cheerful and accurate. When we were called upon completion of our order, the line's physical distancing setup was clear, and the process for payment and food exchange was no-touch. Right, when I walked in I saw that it looked liked an old diner. It takes you back. The service was fast and we got our seat right away and there was a line too. The food came fast which Ed I like about this place. My first glance at the food it looked plain simple even when I got the double jumbo cheeseburger. It looked small. The cheese tastes weird and I didn't like the mayonnaise. But other than that the food was good. There were small cups. The menus were nice. I liked the decoration in the place it was nice. There was food on the floor of our booth though which I didn't like. I'd say my experience here was three stars because of the food on the floor and the underwhelming food. read more

The small-town-diner feeling of The Lucky Wishbone was what ultimately made the experience so memorable. The chicken was exactly what fried chicken should be: crispy on the outside, perfectly moist on the inside. I really appreciated the option of choosing white or dark meat or a combination of the two depending on the availability that day, which showed how fresh the meat was. I ate inside the restaurant surrounded by the homey decor of classic photographs and memorabilia but I also found the option of getting chicken that is so much better than that of fast food restaurants through the Lucky Wishbone's drive-thru window is quite innovative. I stopped here at the recommendation of a local as it's not much to look at just driving by. The butterscotch milkshake was the best I've had since the days of a Candylands in the 50's. Waited 15 minutes behind one person just for two milkshakes. They got 50% of our order correct. My milkshake, chocolate strawberry, was delicious. This place is a tad intimidating to anybody new in Alaska. I've heard about the place from all the locals including my spouse and his family. The TV news makes a huge deal about the old folks that own it and still come to work everyday. A local political family (no, not She Who Must Not Be Named) has a family tradition of eating here after every election someone in their family wins. So...After 18 years of living here, I thought I might be worthy to try it. Dare I step foot in this institution? Meh. I got the cheeseburger for $4.25 and a half order of fries for about $2.50 and a cup of coleslaw for $2.50. A small soda was $1.50. The coleslaw was made with pineapple and I loved it. The fries were just like McDonald's - salty and lukewarm. The half order was the equivalent of a great big McDonald's size. The burger...this is where they really fell down. I noticed on the menu the "Jumbo" is billed as a 1/4 pound burger (that would have been big in the 1950s). It's over $5. I got the regular burger and sure enough, it was the same exact size, bun and everything as a McDonald's kid's meal hamburger. I got the deluxe though so it came with lettuce, onion and tomato. It was plastered in mustard. There is no way on God's green earth that patty was "hand pattied" like the menu says all of their burgers are. It was 1/4 inch thin and perfectly round. $11 for a "happy meal" with coleslaw. (And no toy). I had heard their shakes were fantastic - I thought they'd be served in those old fashioned metal containers, this being an old diner...I saw the orders other people got. A small for over $3 will be served in a 12 oz paper Coke cup. The larger was probably the 18 oz. Coke cup. I sat there pondering, "why is this place so famous?" I saw the chicken dinners come out and ya, they looked wonderful. I even ate some, once, that one of my relatives got for takeout and it was good. Not so memorable that I rushed right back to get more myself. Reading the other reviews about backs being served makes me go back to my "meh" review. I think this place was famous and became an Anchorage landmark (and no doubt, it is) because this was as close as Alaska could get to McDonald's for 30 years. There is nothing special about their burgers and fries. The onion rings they tout as homemade are the kind that are fried in cornmeal. The coleslaw stands out in my mind but everything else is grossly overpriced for plainly mediocre food. (I can hear the locals crying already!!) One last observation - on a Friday afternoon - and yes, the place had no shortage of customers - the clientele (except for me, the waitresses and a bunch of customer's grandkids) were all over 70 at least. It was like a scene out of The Twilight Zone, almost in black and white too, except all green and white. It was like a whole generation of senior citizens were eating there because they didn't realize there now were better places to go for a sandwich or chicken in Anchorage and that this was still "the only place in town" and because it was "Alaska" you could only expect overpriced, mediocre food. It was creepy. A really creepy, "Alaska-before-statehood" vibe. To me, there wasn't even a good "diner" vibe going because the diner's I like serve fantastic food. read more

Some of the criticisms are kind of odd. The tuna sandwich was bad? I did not like the decor?? Seriously? They dont pretend to be anything other than what they are. An old school fried chicken joint. If you could not tell by their out-dated, ugly yellow 'restaurant' sign what you were getting into, that is probably your own fault. The food is actually a lot better than I expected. I just had the fried chicken and I loved it. Really loved it. Couldnt stop eating the damn thing. I like how they just threw in a few rolls into the same box as the chicken so they soaked up a bit of the fat off the batter. Yummy! The cole slaw was decent but not great but it still helped the meal feel a little less heavy. Overall I give it 5 stars because I cant really think of another place in Anchorage or anywhere else in the lower 48 where Ive had chicken that addictive... still have 1 piece left... should I? Lucky Wishbone never fails with their chicken! I always order the Junior pan fried chicken. Usually two pieces of chicken with fries and a corn muffin, It fills me right up! The last time we went our server even gave me an extra piece of chicken since the thigh I got was on the smaller side, score! Worth the hype. This is delicious, crispy fried chicken that's not overly salty or overly seasoned. Very juicy chicken too that way tastier than KFC or whatnot. We came for lunch at 11:30am on a Friday and it was packed. My party of three waited for a table for about 10 minutes as there were 2 parties in front of us. I got the "mom" with all dark meat. The fries that came with the meal were pretty tasty too. The food came out pretty quickly and we wolfed it all down. Throughout our time there the line only got longer and finally died down around 12:30pm when we left. Service was very nice when she noticed we needed something, but it was a challenge to flag her down with it being so busy. All in all a great casual place for some great chicken. read more

Their fried chicken and burgers are great, the only thing is that they really don't have any flavor or taste. It seems like they don't use seasoning at all. You might have to season your chicken or burgers with a little salt and pepper. Other than that this place is a great place to eat with family, friends or co workers.
