Pad Thai flavorless, pretty much just noodles, except for the hair. ............,.........

My favorite Thai place closed and many people pointed me in the direction of Lucky Thai so I had high hopes. Positives: Friendly service, fair prices and portions , and a complimentary appetizer included with my order. Negative: bland flavors on noodle dishes. The apps was typical of what you'd taste from a decent Thai restaurant. However, the pad Thai, which is the most standard dish and how I compare many Thai places, was unfortunately the most bland version I've ever had, anywhere. It didn't even really taste like it had any sauce/flavor to it. If you look at the image you'll see how light in color it was, as if plain. I felt similarly about the noodle dish my friend ordered- under seasoned. Maybe I caught them on a bad night? Because so many people love it here, I'll give it another shot at some point. My 16yo & I decided to give it a try and we are so glad we did. We were the only people eating inside but they were very busy with take out orders. We enjoyed the quiet of the dining room though. They had a nice selection of hot teas to pick from. My daughter enjoyed the Thai iced tea. She got the fried tofu with peanut sauce and loved it. She also had the fried coconut ice cream and said it was the best she ever had. I got the peanut dish with veggies & fried tofu 4 for spice. I requested no fish sauce as I am vegan. No problem. Had the brown rice on the side. Very well cooked. I tried mango sticky rice which was also vegan and omg the mango was SO fresh and soft! The rice was to die for. Everything came out fresh and hot. Wish the menu was labeled what was vegan or could be vegan but the waitress was very sweet and I'm sure she would've taken the time to tell me what I could order. I've eaten here a few times & enjoyed the food each time. I was kind of disappointed to receive gulf shrimp in my pad Thai as opposed to our local Maine shrimp - I think the smaller, local shrimp would be phenomenal in this dish as opposed to the large ones they currently use. But the overall bottom line is, it's good. A few tweaks and the addition of supporting fresh local Maine agriculture & this would be one of the best Thai places in Maine. read more

I've gone to this restaurant for many many years and it's past location and it's new location and the food is always good and amazing. Some of the same people are still working and are always very friendly. Excellent food and great service. They're also very quick. Also, recently, we had a large party and they were excellent and getting us served. read more

Lucky Thai used to be a go-to spot for takeout, but something has happened the past few years that has completely changed it. The food now is flavorless and mushy. The last time we got it, it ended up going right into the trash after a few bites. I wish they would get the magic back from a few years ago, and we'd be back! read more

The best Thai food I ever had. I come here all the time when I'm visiting Maine (and that's often). Im a sucker for the lo mein and you can choose the level of spice you'd like (out of 5 stars I go with 4). Throw in some monkey balls for an extra treat. Relatively priced. Just really solid Thai in the area. Fresh rolls with shrimp are exactly what they should be...super clean flavor-could eat them daily. Seriously, every day. Pad Se Ew is always fab. I'll preface this by saying: I've never been inside Lucky Thai, nor have I ever placed an order for pick up. However, I have eaten their food countless times because my mom is constantly buying dinner (for me; let's be honest, even as an adult is there anything better than your parents feeding you?!) from here ever since she moved to the area. Score! This to me feels like comfort Thai food; the portions are hearty, the food is hearty, the customer service is hearty too. How do I know this? We're a family full of dietary restrictions. Apparently there's a lady here (Katie?) who is unendingly gracious and patient with us when we call and make our order which always includes no fish sauce, no egg, and steamed tofu only. We're "those people", but if you're the slightest bit accommodating, fall in love with you... and we fall hard. Lucky Thai continuously goes out of their way to ensure sure our vegan needs are met - even making recommendations for us on food. But I can tell you what to get here: 1. Spicy Pad Thai: noodles bean sprouts, scallion, and peanut in a spicier sauce. 2. Drunken Noodle: large rice noodles with fresh basil, peanut, mixed vegetables (the good ones, like baby corn), and pineapple in a tangy spicy sauce. And mixed together in one giant bowl?! Swoon! Hot and fresh, room temperature and mushy, cold and a bit hard... no matter how or when you eat it, there's just something about it that hits the spot. I'd like to say I'll try other things on the menu, but I'm pretty sure I've found my home-away-from-home Thai food choices from my home-away-from-hone Thai place. read more

Last night was my birthday and I wanted Thai - Since I moved a bit north a couple years ago I just don't want to make the trek to Kennebunk for Mehkong Thai. So what does one do? yelp of course.... Lucky Thai was the winner. I ordered....2 fried spring rolls, 2 chicken satay, a rangoon, Peanut entree w/ veggies, Spicy fried rice w/ veggies, Panang Curry w/ chicken, Pad Thai with shrimp and Green curry with veggies. I was told at least 35 minutes, it's a 22 minute drive so just enough time to jacket up, load up the dog and head over. Well, apparently Friday nights are B-U-S-Y. There were 8 of us waiting for our orders - mine came out in 50 minutes rather than 35 but the woman at the counter was great - she was apologetic, empathetic and still taking care of tables, taking/bringing out orders & cashiering. The food came out and I was off to my birthday dinner at home with the family. Where are the pictures you ask? Well, after a torturous 22 minute ride home - the aroma was wafting through the car and driving me insane - we just had to dig in and eat it before I snapped a one! The consensus of the group - the food was delicious! Everything was well prepared, the portions were reasonable. We ordered 3 spice levels Careful, Adventurous and Native Thai for the 3 levels of spice enjoyment/tolerance in our house. Now I love a relatively high spice level - just under what is normally referred to as Thai spice so I was the Native Thai. Really wish I'd been a Show Off as their spice levels are low. Even those who like things a little on the tame side were wishing for a bit more zing. My only suggestion would be to jack it up on the spice level when you order or you'll be left wanting more. Oh, I almost forgot...due to the extensive wait, they gave us two orders of dumplings! The food and the service was a 5, the extra wait knocked it down to a 4 but the service recovery (apology and recognition/resolution) brought them right back up to the 5. I will definitely be back but might skip Fridays. read more

I ordered a Shrimp Tom Yum soup, chicken Pad Thai, Duck drunken noodle, and a shrimp papaya salad. I grew up eating from this Thai place, I haven't been back for years until today. My pad Thai was decent i do like mine pretty citrusy or sour a little, but it did taste a little bland. My friend got the duck and said it was ok. We tried the soup and I love Tom yum soup I've had it had a bunch of restaurants around greater Portland and this one wasn't my favorite. I don't know how a Thai place could mess that one up but it lacked originality, traditional flavors, and it was honestly kind of watery. We did get complimentary dumpling which weren't appetizing to look at but were tasty. I'd have to say the best things were the papaya salad and the dumplings for taste points. read more

Best. Pad Thai. EVER. I used to work in Gorham and it took me a year of being there to discover this gem, but I am so glad I did. The ambiance is great, the service is awesome, but the food-the food is outstanding. Their soup is among the best I've had. Its like a miso, but with a few shredded carrots and lettuce, and no tofu. The crab rangoons are my favorite of any thai joint. The wontons are always crispy and the crab/cream cheese ratio is perfect. I love about 25 minutes from Gorham and no longer work there, but I would (and have) driven the distance just for pad thai and rangoons, despite the number of Thai places in Portland. You can get chicken, shrimp or beef pad thai, or plain. The spiciness level is on point (I am a wuss, so I go no spice or "1 star") to what you order and the dinner portion always leaves me with leftovers (which are better than fresh, sometimes). Its lighter than a lot of pad thai I've had and I feel like its healthier than most. I've ordered a few other dishes there and nothing has ever disappointed. read more

I must say I always enjoy my meals from Lucky Thai. The tofu pad Thai is enjoyable and I give lots of instructions like please no spicy, extra nuts, no little worms and they always get it right. I love the masaman curry as well. I have never dined in, it's always been a take-out experience for me but it's always been great. Fantastic Thai food close to home - finally! Typically we dine at the pricier joints closer to or in Portland, but had the Portland Dine Around and were eager to give something closer to home a go. Glad we did! It's in a strip mall so I didn't have the highest expectations for it, but we'll definitely be back! Surpassed my expectations by far. And the interior was nice. However - the lights were REALLY bright - I enjoy the track lighting but it was on full brightness on a Friday night. The ambiance would have been a little nicer with dimmer lighting. The 3 star spicy pad Thai brought a little heat, just enough. We'll probably try 4 star next time. The pineapple fried rice was just right too - simply chunks of pineapples, nothing extreme, but a good ratio of pineapples to the rest of the food. Also had the vegetable tempura - superrrr tasty. And friendly service! Great pricing - overall awesome experience. Call me crazy but I think if the ambiance would have been more appropriate for an evening dining experience, I think it would have been 5 stars. read more

I'm a picky eater so i always ask for my Thai lo Mein without mushroom and onions and ask for broccoli and extra juice because the chickens usually dry. I go out of my way to come here. I drove 20 minutes home to find that it was loaded with onions and no extra juice. I called them and got a credit. They said "oh i just looked at the order real quick". Went tonight and ordered the same exact thing. I peeked in the top before i left and it looked ok. Got home and poured it into the bowl. It's loaded with mushrooms, no broccoli and no extra juice. At this point I'm done with them but very disappointed that they can't make an order correctly read more

Wow this by far has to be the WORST thai food ever in the world. From California to Montreal.. What the hell was I even thinking!!! When I approached the seating area I was sat by our only waitress who was not only rude.. But impolite.. I ordered chicken pad see ew under the lunch menu because pad see ew is one of my thai favorites. When I was given the food, it had a HAIR on it. And it was definitely not mine is because i have really short hair.. I have a picture of it too.. I had to take it back and she did take it and said that she will replace it.. Like literally 30 seconds later.. THE SAME DISH was back on my table. I could tell based on the temperature of the food. GROSS! I have decided to let it go and give it a try.. It had so much fish sauce and was almost unbearable to eat. The dumplings were deep fried and previously frozen so once i ate the dumplings. The oil and grease splashed on everyone and was not very pleasant. If only i could give this place zero stars I WOULD!! If you are willing to go to portland or south portland for great thai its definitely worth it. Go to poms thai in south portland but if you really want good food.. Go to saeng thai house because this place is just terrible and unbearable. Looking at the expressions of other customers. They did not seem impressed as well as far as how the food went as well as the service. They are moving to a shopping center center soon and i don't recommend you go to lucky thai whether you come to this location or the new location.. I would never recommend this even to my WORST ENEMY. I am going to spread the word to yelp.. Tripadvisor or whatever... Just dont come here. read more

Lucky Thai provides decent Thai food at a reasonable price. We ordered take-out. Our menu included: Crab Rangoons-These had a nice crab to cream cheese ratio and a good flavor. Yum! Fried Spring Rolls-Crispy and delicious. Fresh Spring Rolls-Bland. The fresh spring rolls lacked flavor or spice. I would not order them again. Pineapple Fried Rice with Pork- Decent flavor with a good amount of pork and and pineapple. Chicken Pad Thai-Good flavor. We ordered it with a 2/5 spice level. This was mild and had good flavor. When we went to pick up the takeout, we saw the inside of the restaurant. It has a cozy dining room which is neat as a pin. There is also a bar which serves beer and wine. Great Pad Thai. I am a local and frequent take-out patron of Lucky Thai. I am generally very critical of my restaurant experiences...overly critical my wife would say. I rarely give a restaurant a second chance after a sub-par meal or bad experience. Lucky Thai's food is consistently exceptional and prepared promptly. I have never had a bad experience ordering there and the ownership and staff are friendly and efficient. Prices are reasonable. Highly recommended for the food quality and preparation. read more

I absolutely love some good thai food. I was excited to try Lucky Thai because of the positive reviews I've read as well as heard from friends who have eaten here. Sadly, I was a little dissappointed. I ordered the Pad thai with veggies, chicken, and shrimp on the number 3 heat level. This meal was actually pretty delicious however, for it being a level 3 spice, It seemed to be not as spicy as I had expected. I am a person who loves spicy food and a 3 is usually enough. If I order this again, I will get a level 5 spice. I also ordered the seafood drunken noodles. I had never tried drunken noodles prior to this experience so I have nothing to compare it to. I was really disappointed in this dish. The Noodles were really soggy and over cooked, again, level 3 spice wasn't enough, I had to search for the seafood in the dish, and overall was not a really satisfying dish. I also ordered a small tom yum soup. Again, this is an item I have not previously tried but it sounded delicious and I was feeling adventerous. Overall, I was pleased with the soup. It could be a little spicier for my liking though and I was disappointed that it only had 2 pieces of shrimp in it. I will definitely order from here again but prob will not order the drunken noodles again. read more

Not bad - tasty even. But - if I ask for " show off" level spice - I should at the very least cough once or break a slight sweat. This was what I would consider to be medium level spice when I had requested to be flamed out. It's not bad at all - but c'mon - hook me up with some spice- please. The Tom yum seafood soup for 2 is an incredible value with haddock, scallops, shrimp and calamari for $9.50. The Thai dishes are good as well. Get 5 stars for spice level, as it's not very spicy. The scallop pad Thai is among my favorites as well. Spring rolls are home made, and tasty for a vegetarian treat. Good stuff for Gorham!!! read more
