Not only was my order not ready on time, but while I was waiting, someone who seemed to be an owner or employee brought a baby into the kitchen in a stroller. I found this really concerning from a hygiene standpoint. The customer service wasn't friendly either. No greeting, no apology for the delay--just a generally cold and unwelcoming vibe. My family and I dined here on a Friday afternoon. The parking lot was surprisingly full although when we got inside there were only two other parties dining. We were greeted and seated quickly. A round of waters came immediately. Our waitress was super sweet and bubbly. My grandmother is hard of hearing and she was very patient, repeating herself, when trying to communicate with her. I'd like to note that for not having a ton of people in the restaurant, it was unusually loud. The patrons weren't being loud. It just seemed like the acoustics of the room, coupled with music playing in the background, made it so we had to speak loudly to hear one another, which just added to the noise level. We started with as few appetizers: chicken satay, pan, fried dumplings, and fried spring rolls. The skewered chicken was well seasoned and juicy. The peanut sauce for the satay tasted as it does at other places, but it was definitely thicker than I'm used to. The same went for the wrapper on the dumplings. It was thicker and less crispy than other places. The fried spring rolls were a little different than I expected. After reviewing the menu I realized there were different kinds of spring rolls and that was my error. So just read carefully if you are into the more traditional crispy spring rolls. Main meals- The pad thai is one of the better versions I've had out of many places I've visited. Absolutely delicious! The orange chicken chunks were huge. The peppered steak had a chili pepper next to it on the menu, but actually wasn't really spicy at all, which was fine but a little misleading. The prices here are extremely reasonable. Three appetizers and five meals only came to 90 bucks .If I had half stars, I think I'd go with a 3.5. Cons -Noise level and other than the pad thai I've had better versions of most of these dishes, but what they made today was still yummy and fresh. My husband is obsessed with Veranda Thai's pad Thai and Tom Yum soup. We usually go to the Portland location which is always good. Last night we needed to grab something later (8 pm) and NOTHING was open on a Sunday night but Veranda Thai! I didn't even know there was a Westbrook location and my husband calls them up on speed dial! I grabbed a larb gai salad. It was expensive ($19.44) but was full to the top. I will get 2 meals out of it. Lots of chicken and thinly sliced cabbage and basil. My only complaint was WAY too much dressing! Below the top third, it was swimming in dressing. The dressing was very tasty, but too much makes the lettuce super soggy. This salad at Portland usually has less dressing. Great location with lots of parking on Main St. Hubby says he often comes to this location as easier to get in and out of and less of a wait than the Portland one. Same great food! read more

Verand Kitchen and Bar is a nice little Vietnamese restaurant on the edge of central Westbrook. It's got plenty of parking and seating enough for several dining groups. Their menu offers the standard variety of Vietnamese restaurants -- rice dishes, noodle dishes, appetizers, and pho. I always order the standard Vermicelli noodle with grilled protein. I chose pork and sugarcane shrimp this time. Food came out in about 15 minutes of serving and the staff were quite attentive. Another in our group had ordered the regular Pho which actually looked quite good -- rare and solid in flavor. Mine also met expectations, although I didn't enjoy the sugarcane shrimp much. I don't know why but I always thought sugarcane shrimp was grilled shrimp on a sugarcane slice kabob, but alas it was more like a ground shrimp stick. My family dined at this establishment on June 7th. The bill was presented with a card reader with no backup. I slid my card in and told my wife what the total was and grabbed the printout and went to the restroom without reading it. My wife left a 20 percent cash tip on the table. Later the same day I reviewed the receipt and saw there was a 20 percent tip included on the receipt which I did not authorize. I called to complain and was told that tip would be taken off and it had not been done. I am now working with the credit card company to have that tip removed as they have been tipped twice. My daughter told me she was there a month before and the wait staff included a 20 percent tip on their meal without her boyfriend's approval. Food here is decent, but this restaurant is SO ANNOYING to deal with. If you want to order, you have a 50/50 chance that someone will pick up the phone after you have tried twice, hung up, then tried again. It might be understandable (might be) if you went to the restaurant and the place is swamped and the phone is ringing off the hook. But it is not like that. There is almost always six or eight people dining there. My wife said tonight "hey, lets have Thai food." My response was, yeah, if they answer the damn phone." True enough, i called twice, timed out, and on the third effort, someone picked up and said "yeah." Is their business so good that they can afford to be this sloppy dealing with customers? Place looks pretty nice and cozy, it's summer and as we walk in the place is cold, we waited for a while before someone noticed us and got seated.I ordered the wonton noodle soup and fresh spring roll and broth is hot and there's plenty of noodles too, got some sides of fresh veggies too which is good to add in the soup, my only complaint is the sauce of the spring roll that is too thick almost kind of a paste not a sauce and that's the reason that I could not give it a five star and server is not too friendly . read more

Tonight I got a pad Thai that had no sauce in it and was completely bland I called and asked for a refund for a meal I'm not going to eat and the guy told me I had to drive back there and give him the meal so he could try it lol. I live 20 minutes away in windham. I'm not driving back there to have the manager "try" my meal so I can get WHAT I ORDERED. Give me a break. The place was mediocre at best when I was in there last week. Regretting giving them a second chance... it won't happen again. I like most of the Vietnamese restaurants in the Portland area so I wanted to give a try this place which is closer to home. I would like to support local shops. When I first went into the restaurant, I liked the ambiance. It was 3 pm and the restaurant was pretty empty. We are the second group of people dining in so I thought it is going to be a good experience. Service: HOWEVER, it took them more than 30 mins to just say hi and get our order and took more time to get a glass of water. That was not the greatest but I tried to understand thinking maybe the waitress is new. I have worked in a restaurant so I understand it can be difficult sometimes. After another long wait, finally, the food came out but the lady who brought out the food (seemed like an owner) was quite blunt and didn't say a word. We were grateful that we finally got our food so we said "thank you for helping us :)" many times but no words coming back from the server. I've never experienced such a rude attitude in my whole life eating out in a restaurant. We needed a bowl and a pair of chopsticks but no one asked us so we had to speak up. We got the chopsticks cause we asked but no one was asking so we had to go without a bowl. Food: We ordered crispy duck and pho. They are usually our go-to menu and I am 99% of the time satisfied with them (at other restaurants). HOWEVER, the duck was so chewy and most of the parts were tendons. The sauce was too watery. Total waste of money. Pho was just ok, but the noodle was overcooked. I usually don't write any reviews bc I know it is hard to work in a restaurant but I had to this time bc we had such a bad time. Overall: I don't recommend this restaurant. There are other great Vietnamese restaurants nearby if you search. A lot of them closes on Sundays tho. This place is open on Sunday. So if you want good Vietnamese food, I hope you want to have them on Saturday or any other weekdays to go to other places. We were trying to be polite, but "thank you very much" was met with nothing. They forgot about us after asking for the check. We were there for about an hour and a half. There was only one other table. The attitude of the impromptu server, who I think is related to the owners, means I will never go back or ever go to veranda market again. She didn't say a word to us or ask if we wanted anything. She was mad we were there. Support better managers (depending on what you want) like Sun Vietnamese Restaurant, Big Fin Poke, Bamboo Bistro, Jacks Thai Cuisine, PHOever Maine, Mikong Bistro, Saigon, Thanh Thanh 2, Pho and Co. -- Veranda has lost my business. Their pho noodles were so over cooked and worse than any of those above serving pho (I think Jacks and Big Fin are the two not serving Pho). Give Sun Vietnamese Restaurant a try, it's better and they are lovely people. Pho & Co. is also excellent, cheap, and friendly. My family, and cousin's boyfriend and I come to this restaurant this weekend. Everything that we order, it didn't taste good at all. We don't mind the services being slow because they just open and open have 2 waiter. I am understand that point of view. I order Vietnamese duck noodles. It has a lot more fat and meat, more soup then noodle. It is not even a portion yet. It is very salty and no flavor to the soup base. Also, don't get me started with the Vietnamese ice coffee, it is disgusting. They put more condensed milk or than coffee and less ice. Everything it is not even balance out.when the coffee come out, it is warm in the bottom and sweet all the way that you can taste the coffee. My cousin's boyfriend order special Pho, he even told me it doesn't taste good. My aunt called crispy Lo mein ( mì sàu dòn). The sauce taste like detergent. Would I go back to second times? Wow!! What a disappointment. Just ordered apps, veg tempura not bad, beef satay with peanut sauce, peanut sauce had MOLD in it. I didnt notice until I had already had some sauce. Hopefully I will not get sick. And the shrimp sugarcane smelt so fishy I couldn't even take a bite. Went to this Veranda restaurant in Westbrook, because we had heard such good things about the Veranda chain. Disappointing. We were expecting spice, flavor, something more than dumbed-down Asian cuisine. I think it was trying to be an Asian fusion restaurant where it mixes all Asian dishes without the flavor. My noodle dish was so bland that it absolutely had NO flavor. My dinner date had a spicy duck dish, with no distinct varying taste from my noodle dish. We had such high hopes for this since we live around the corner from it. Have to say we won't be returning. read more
