I lived with my family down the hill in Maillardville as a kid, and my dad would often take us here as a treat. I loved watching the food get made through the large viewing window, particularly the spectacular stretching of the noodle dough. The staff were really friendly and we felt welcomed and appreciated. At times, some dishes could take an unusually long time to arrive after ordering, but we always ended up fed in the end and it turned out to be worth the wait. Ordered take out for lunch: house seafood stirfried cutting noodles but mostly noodles stuck together and we had to throw away half of it as it wasn't enjoyable to chew on a clump of flour. Sweet soy milk only enough for two small cups and one order of Chinese donut and find it quite doughy. We drove by 'Lucky Gate' just before 11 am the other day, on the way to some food shopping, and saw the 'open' sign lit -- ready for lunch, we turned around, and returned to give it a try. We parked in the small lot out front (note, there is also a small, parking lot out back, should one prefer, or find the front lot full). The restaurant's footprint looks very small from the outside, but appears much larger when inside, and seeing the set up of tables. Seating arrangements are via booth-like tables along one wall, and several, different sized tables and chairs throughout the rest of the space. One portion of the kitchen is glassed, and open to view from one's table. The decor (decorations, and such), rather colourful, and cheerful. A small, tv set was playing (tuned to a station broadcasting in Chinese). We received a nice, initial welcome into the restaurant, and friendly-help when ordering, and throughout our meal and stay. Hot tea (pot, w/cups) and menus, came quickly, as soon as our server had observed which table was chosen (and that tea was sure good, and the pot kept full!!). Food: preparations arrived from kitchen to table in a timely and orderly sequence. -- wonton soup (warm soup to start our meal - a very dark, flavourful broth, meaty/juicy 'melt-in-your-mouth' wontons, along with several, good-sized pieces of fresh, still crispy broccoli, and a few noodles - not a drop was left in the bowl) -- squid with gai lan (so good-looking and tasting - squid pieces tender & sweet, gai lan tender, but still so crisp) -- Lucky Gate home style steamed, pork dumplings (thin coverings, meaty, juicy, flavourful insides - very tasty delights) -- House Special chow mein w/seafood & beef tendon, and (asked for) large, thick noodles (noodles, shrimp, scallops, tendon, bok choy, and sauce - mixture definitely a first for us - ingredients well-prepared, dish tasty and enjoyed) -- (Chinese fried doughnuts - provided 'on the house' - nice gesture, much-enjoyed!!) Lucky Gate's 'Northern Chinese cuisine' offered some quite different ingredient mixtures, textures, flavours, and tastes for us. Dining there was a great, first opportunity to try some new-to-us preparations, and we sure enjoyed the experience. Was skeptical about the place, after all, it was in the middle of no-where asian, so to speak. After having lunch there today, I would have to give it thumbs up. Having the "Shanghanese Dim Sum" around my work area, and knowing that it is done correctly is awesome. The other thing they do here is they serve fresh hand made noodles. From the outside, this place doesn't look like anything special but it is actually a hidden gem in the Coquitlam. It is one of my favorite Chinese Restaurants and a must-try if you are in the area. Some of my favorite dishes here are the hot and sour soup, the wonton soup, spicy scallop dumplings, spicy green beans and chicken potato noodles. Everything is very flavorful, not to mention authentic as well. If you order their noodle dishes, you have either choose from drag noodles or cut noodles. The chef makes the noodles in house from scratch and you can watch him prepare your meal through a giant glass window in the resturant where you can see part of the kitchen. Yum! read more

We were starving, so we ordered our usually items: Fried lamb skewers (these are incredible: they also give you some chili powder and cumin to sprinkle on them) Hang cut pan-fried noodles with chicken and potatoes (this dish is good, although I wish that they give you more noodles) Steamed vegetable dumplings (not bad, buy my girlfriend likes them here) The service isn't the greatest, but it is nice to have a restaurant in the area that is opened late (until midnight). read more

Everyone these days seem to be down for dim sum on Sundays. So if you want to find out whether that girl you're with is actually cool, or just hoping on the dim sum bandwagon because it's popular like sushi rolls, best way to do it is to change it up and take her to a Chinese breakfast place. It's not as popular as dim sum, but just as delicious. See the size of those youtiaos?! Greasy and crispy. I honestly think they're among the best in the metro Vancouver area. If she's up for having something this heavy for breakfast, you know she can hang. You can get away with being prissy with food at the dim sum place, but not here. The warm soy milk tastes great, the baos are delicious. The noodles are solid, they won't knock you off your feet but nothing that'll leave you disappointed. It's a small restaurant, but they make the basics top notch. They don't speak Cantonese here, even though the area has a large Cantonese community. You either have to speak Mandarin or hope they can somewhat get what you want to order with a combination of English and you pointing at stuff. It's not a big place, usually they only have 1-2 servers so ordering can be trouble if you don't know what you want. They serve fast though, and service is friendly (you can tell they're trying which isn't the case at a lot of Chinese restaurants). I like these type of places more than dim sum or iHop for if you're hungover. These places tend to be less loud than dim sum joints, and you can get your food quicker. I'd give them a 5, but I'd reserve that for Ningtu on Kingsway which also excels at making their own fancy dishes for dinner along with the breakfast basics. We came back here after a while, despite it being in our back yard practically. The food here is very flavourful and good. But This time there was a small catch. A very dangerous one too. We found a very small piece of black wire in our lamb dish. It was about a 1 cm long. We are sure it came from the wire colanders they use to prep food. They gave us the dish free in compensation. Service was ok despite being super busy and only one server. I feel bad as they tried hard to make good food and a good experience. But its important they review their cooking tools to ensure they are all in working order read more

Lucky Gate doesn't look all that appealing on the outside but it's pretty good. Outside looks kind of old and dirty but inside even it's old ish they keep it tidy and clean. Nice service and good food at reasonable price. Lots of options and love that they explain a little of their perspective of Chinese food and it's cultural background. Very thoughtful, educational, and interesting. Not usually crowded but do get busy thought the noon to afternoon time. Good for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No reservation needed and a few different sits. A parking lot in the front and a smaller one at the back and it's not too hard to find. read more

One of my favorite Chinese restaurants ever. Lots of variety, and all of it is good! They also have fresh, hand made noodles that are unbeatable. In the restaurant, there's a glass window that actually lets you see the guy make the chinese noodles - a process where he flings, folds, twists the dough over and over again to make lots and lots of noodles. Shanghai noodles, pork/sour napa hot pot, beef noodle soup, a variety of chinese flaky breads, and so much more. Delicious!! It is cash only though, so be prepared. That is how I found Lucky Gate. At the end of the day, I would consider myself lucky. Going there with Banana Girl, I already know what I want to order. Just a disclaimer, not everyone who reads this entry will enjoy the type of food that I ordered, simply because it's not something you eat every day. Cuisine: Chinese, Szechuan Price/Entrée: $10-20 Out of 5... (1: Don't bother -- 5: Excellent) Food: 4.0 Service: 2.0 Ambiance: 1.5 Overall: 3 The first dish I want to introduce is (Spicy Sliced Cattle Stomach & Beef). The first two characters of this dish in Chinese is Husband and Wife. There is a traditional folk tale that explains the origin of this dish. Basically there was this couple in Chengdu, China. There was a couple selling this on the streets. People praised the dish, and recognized that it was a husband and wife team. So eventually they branded this to be the Husband and wife slices. Till today, there is a restaurant in China that is from the original recipe, and possibly family. So in this particular 'husband and wife cattle slice' you can find tripe, tongue, cilantro, and to top it off: peanuts. This dish is spicy, and it will make you sweat. It was so good I couldn't stop picking more up with my chopsticks and having more. The bite was crisp, and if I had to use the word el dente, I would think it's a good way to describe the texture. I urge everyone, if you can get pass the point of where the ingredients came from, and you love spicy food... ORDER IT. What can you lose in your life time? $9.99 + HST The second plate we order is (Slice pork with garlic sauce). This plate is utilizing pork belly boiled until cook. The magic of the flavor is coming from the sauce. Traditionally this garlic sauce has a strong over the top salty taste. You can taste vinegar like flavor combined with soy sauce. This is also served cold. The third dish was also an appetizer served cold. (drunk chicken) is chicken marinated in Chinese rice wine. All I have to say is, the chicken was so fresh. The rice wine taste is not too over powering. There are cases where I would order this from another restaurant, and disliking this dish because it felt like I was taking a shot of moonshine. This is another dish that is not for everyone. This is . This is a dish that is from Chongqing China. You have fish fillets that is covered in an extremely oily broth, and on top covered in peppercorn and chili. They serve it with flame underneath to keep cooking the fish to continue the intensity and flavour of the dish. It was extremely spicy, and I was sweating. If you are a fan of spicy ethic foods and is a daring foodie, you have to try this. Braised Sliced Fish in Chili Sauce Fish slices are first deep fried then braised in special chili sauce. The fish is crispy on the outside yet juicy and tender inside. This dish is nice compared to Wah Wing's - their's is good, but slightly heavy on vinegar. Tofu with Seafood and Vegetable Hot Pot This was huge and came in a piping hot pot filled with prawns, baby scallops, squid, a few fish slices and tofu over a bed of Chinese cabbage and cilantro. The broth is very clear and a little bland - much like a soup rather than a sizzling hot pot medley of seafood, tofu with thick sauce. In addition, to be picky I would have also expected full size scallops and not tiny frozen babies. House Special Chow Mein (Seafood, Beef Tendon) Your choice of either chef special hand pulled noodles or hand cut noodles. We got the hand pulled noodles. This noodle is stir fried dried with special house soy sauce. Beef tendons are soft and melts in your melt. Served also with baby scallops, prawns, and sparing pieces of bak choy. For 11.99 I would have expected more ingredients and a slightly bigger portion. Steamed Shanghai Dumplings aka XLB 8 soup-filled dumplings steamed with a thin outer skin. These XLB were quite big and the pork was flavorful. Remember to bite the top dumpling slightly to let out some hot air and pour in some malt vinegar for flavor. Careful otherwise the soup will explode everyone. Handle with care in a spoon! Cucumber in Garlic Sauce Another cold appi - refreshing cucumbers marinated in garlic and lil bit of chili. One of my favorites. The portion of this dish is quite large So to cap it off, this seems like an episode of Extreme Cuisine on the Food Network with tripe and tongue. I would trust that if you have an open mind and a passion for cuisine you would be interested in trying everything at least once. Next time I would really like to try their Smoked Fish and the Pickled Cabbage, Pork and Tofu Hotpot; but every time we come here we over order and become too greedy than what our stomachs can handle. read more

I love this place! It's pretty close to where I live, so I've been there a couple of times. Their noodle dishes are definitely the best, especially the "shaved" noodles. They have a pretty big window where you can peek into the kitchen and watch the chef cook. Portion sizes are pretty good. Service is also pretty good. read more

Lucky Gate turned up and basically I ordered the items mentioned in the reviews. The lamb skewers (kebabs) were yummy...though a bit chewy..very tasty and a bit spicy! The XLB were hot, fresh and very tasty. The Hot and Sour soup was a 9 out of 10. The Shanghai noodles with beef and shrimp were plate licking good. The green onion pancakes were a bit soggy and could have been more 'oniony' but everyone liked them! It's a definite 'go again' place if I'm ever in the depths of Coquitlam!! read more

I have eaten here several times and found the food fairly good and the service varied from poor to acceptable. I am a widower an often dine alone. The problem l found with my last visit was this - l ordered a fried rice dish, the 2 people at the table in front of me ordered the same dish. Their's arrived just before mine, no problem there. When l compared the dishes they had about 1/2 more than me, obviously mine had been sized down to suit a single person, yet charged at full menu price. The family was craving for some chinese food for dinner. Checked out Yelp to see where the closest chinese restaurant was to our location and 2 min later we found ourselves at Lucky Gate. We ordered 4 items from the menu:. Small hot and sour soup, yeung chow fried rice, seafood and beef tendon noodle, and the house special pork dumplings. Overall, I found the food very tasty and prices to be quite reasonable. Hot and sour soup was probably one of the best ones I've had...a perfect balance of the hot chilli and vinegar with ample slices of tofu and bamboo shoots mixed in with some parsley. However, the yeung chow fried rice was a big disappointment. From what I could see, the chef only used three ingredients in the fried rice:. Eggs, spam, and shrimp. Not what you call an authentic version of this dish. The seafood and beef noodle was above average but literally you can count the number of beef tendons and shrimp in the dish. The star in the dish was definitely the noodles as it was made from scratch. We saw the chef take out a big block of dough and slicing it directly in to a pot of boiling water. The noodles had a very chewy texture to it which I really enjoyed. The dumplings were just okay. The dumpling skin was too thick for my liking but the pork and soup made up for it as it tasted pretty good with the vinegar sauce. Where this restaurant lost points was in the cleaniness. As soon as we were seated at our table I saw strands of hair all over the ripped table cloth. The restaurant also had a strong odor like what you would smell in a hockey changing room after a game. Couldn't pinpoint where the odor was coming from but it could be from one of the customers. Parking lot is small for a complex with 2 other businesses. Restaurant only accepts cash and debit. I have been to this restaurant a handful of times and the reasons I dislike the restaurant on the first visit seems consistent. The chef's recommendation, stewed pork neck bone selling for $6.99 today, is always sold out. The portions are inconsistent, the texture of the braised beef goes from overly tender to under braised, there's no service at all, the food various day to day. I noticed a price increase, a Beijing style noodle is $12.99, I can't remember what the price was before but $12.99 seems over priced. read more

Probably the worst Chinese food I have had; two of the four dishes were not what we ordered and all of it was barely edible. The prawns were so overcooked that they were like eating rubber. She told me they had all dishes if I named them; but when we ordered one common dish, she said no. I didn't use mandarin and it's not my fault. The food is so-so. No service, never go back again. Good stuff here. Nothing too spectacular in the decor of the place. Looks like a typical cafe. Ordered the shiao long bao and also vegetable bao. It was much larger than I expected it to be compared to Dinesty in Richmond. Impressive. Ordered green onion pan fried pancake also nicely pan fried and not dark looking like in Dinesty. We also ordered a sour vegetable with thinly sliced pork hot pot. That was pretty good. After watching through the window of the chef pulling noodles we decided to try out their knife cut noodles. We ordered some pan fried knife cut noodles and I thought it tasted amazing. It was cut real thin but it had nice texture and the sauce they used was nice it must have been a sweet soy sauce or something. Very authentic Chinese restaurant from China. read more

I am deeply disappointed with Lucky Gate Chinese Restaurant. we tried this restaurant a total of 3 times in the past 3 months before I wrote this review, and we're glad to take our business elsewhere after our previous visit. There's must be a change of ownership or something, the quality of food and service were falling significantly off the chart during each of our visits. Not only the prices increased on the menus, the quality of the food is extremely poor. Random ingredients are being added to some traditional dishes, and they taste worse than most food court items. When take-outs are ordered, instead of using aluminum foils on hot items, plastic saran wraps were used where they were heavily melted and mixed into your food. Not very good at all. The wonton soup was the worst I've ever had - something wrong with the broth - it tasted like a cross between beef soup and miso soup. I couldn't even finish a bowl of it. Also got prawns with cashew nuts and the prawns were NOT de-viened which is disgusting. The prices are also higher than everywhere else. 2 dishes + wonton soup came to $35 - at Zhou's Chinese Restaurant this would cost about $25 and their food tastes way better. Their steamed pork dumplings are delicious and of generous size. The lady owner recommended shaved noodles stir fry with lamb was excellent.

The food are great tasting but service is not so good. I like the noodles particularly. The washroom is dirty and they leave buster seats inside the washroom which I think is very dirty. I will still visit this restaurant once a while just because the food taste amazing. But I wouldn't recommend if you are looking for good service and a clean place to dine. read more
