Lubys is just a classic Cafe that I love to go to when I'm in Texas. Food hasn't changed in forever, and that's a good thing to me. Only issue was with the online ordering. When you order online, the website provides a status of your order. My status was updated from order received, to order being prepared, to order ready. When I saw that my order was ready, I walked over to the to-go counter stupidly expecting that my order would be ready. No one was working behind that counter, so when I finally found someone, she pulled the receipt from the register and apparently my order had NOT been prepared or even acknowledged. So, my 2:39pm pick up turned into 2:55pm pickup. So, including the 15 minutes from ordering, it took 31 minutes when I could have just gone through the line in 10 minutes. So, what's the lesson here? I'm an idiot for thinking that when the website says my "order is ready" that my order would actually be ready. So, save yourself the time and just go through the line. First off, some of the food was okay but was subpar. Their fried chicken? I would rather have Church's or Jollibee. The worst part is how they have a discount for veterans, but you don't see this anywhere clear, and I didn't see it until I was done eating and halfway to my car. I walked back in and asked about getting this discount refunded to me, and the cashier told me they couldn't. When I asked to see the manager, she just rudely pointed to a sign that was so far up hardly anyone would immediately notice that says discounts like that need to be said before payment is taken. At that point, I just dropped my receipt on the floor and left. Look, I get it. Maybe too many people asked for this after the fact, but one, the 25% discount needs to be more obvious, and two, same goes with the warning to give notice of discount beforehand. The worst thing is I ate there once before the last time I was in the area, and likely didn't know of the veterans discount. Whatever. They don't have to worry about me ever coming back because the food is subpar, like most places like this are nowadays, and I live elsewhere that once had a Luby's but no longer does, and I don't think anyone misses it either. read more

I was very disappointed with my recent visit. The bread was old and had an unpleasant smell, the fish sticks tasted stale, and the pork was undercooked. On top of that, my unsweetened iced tea was actually sweet. Overall, the food quality was far below expectations -- I hope management takes this feedback seriously and does something about. So I'm gonna start by saying I hope folks really will keep going to Luby's in El Paso. There are only really two other places to get midwestern or country home style American food here and that's Golden Corral, a buffet and Cheddars a cafe. Luby's is the last of a dying Breed, the Cafeterias. The family Sunday after church place of mine and many others childhood. I think I must be part Square Fish, Mac and Cheese with corn and Strawberry Shortcake because that was my "go-to" for years as a child. Today as an adult, I love the carved roast beef, the fried and baked chicken and the baked fish. And I never miss the Cheese Enchiladas here. They are made Tex-Mex style with lots of meat sauce and yellow cheese. Inside and melting all over the top. So good. Yea things changed a lot after the pandemic, we lost 2 locations. And lots of faves off the menu. Goodbye Friday Gumbo. See ya Sunday King Ranch Chicken. And they still have salads, but no longer do the the big huge bowls of 3 types of greens greet you at the start of the line, with a smiling lady ready to serve them into a bowl for you, with up to 9 different kinds of toppings like crushed boiled eggs. Diced tomatoes and cucumbers. Real bacon bits, croutons, fried onions, grated cheese, grilled chicken or diced Ham, and several homemade salad dressings. That you could sub on any combo plate for $1.99 . No today you just have a small to-go container with greens and two tomato wedges. And a selection or premade salad dressing pouches. All the prepared salads have been reduced to 2-3 options that rotate daily, in little sundae cups. You have to hope you come on pea salad or carrot salad day now. It's not there every day anymore. But the line is still well stocked with old faves like square fish, that super expensive bone in pork chop is nearly $17.50 now. They do still have the Luann platter but it's nearly $10 plus drink, still, not too bad for lunch not in a hurry or fast food joint. I DO love the ambiance, the nostalgia. Hearing real silverware scratching against real plates. Dishes crashing and clanging in the kitchen. Ahh but paper napkins now. Gone are the green cloth ones...I like The low hum of multiple conversations. People carrying trays for older people. Laughter of the children as they eat jello.. I had Baked Mayonnaise fish today, with Mac and cheese, spinach and green beans. And a roll. With some tea. $18 and change before tip. It was all delicious, all my food was very warm. My roll even melted my butter. Kids eat FREE HERE on Wednesdays and SATURDAYS!!! One free meal with every adult meal... that's a good deal for a Wednesday night or Saturday afternoon after soccer or football games... is this 5 STAR dining??? No, but it's real food .... Well, I see an average of 3 1/2 stars. That's exactly where I am. Lets start with this, I love Buffets! And Luby's is one that goes way back. I have fond memories of the variety and all the goodies! Because, we do not have a Luby's locally, we stopped by this one while traveling. We stopped in the day after Christmas and I thought it might be busy, but we were able to go straight up to the food line. There were some familiar dishes, but to me, it looked like there were fewer choices than the last time that I visited. Maybe it was just my imagination. We went on down the line, making our choices as we went. The employess were all pleasant which was really nice. My favorite was the liver and onions, mashed potatoes and fried okra. Unfortunately, I hit the bottom of the pan on the liver and onions. I was just given liver because the onions were gone. I sure wish that they would have offered to bring onions when the next batch came out, but they didn't. The food was lukewarm at best. The liver was pretty good but would have been better had I received the next batch. The okra and potatoes were good, but again, only lukewarm. My wife had the fish almandine. Unfortunately she said it was fishy, but did say it was usually better. So yes, I will be back. I think we just hit it on the wrong day or time. I do like Luby's and unfortunately, they are becoming hard to find, so I think I will see them as an out of the ordinary treat whenever I find one. Maybe next time I'll have my onions! Just visited this location and there was a man asking for someone to buy him food. I offered and he told me that the manager wasn't going to allow him to eat there. I went ahead and bought the gentleman lunch. Mind you it's 110° outside. I stayed with the gentleman to ensure they would let him eat his meal in the restaurant in a cool place so he could enjoy it. No one should be treated like that. Even if he was panhandling or not, all he wanted was a meal. No money. Just a meal. He Should be allowed to eat his meal like everyone else whether or not he pays for it or someone else does. read more

The food has a nice selection, there something for EVERYONE. The food is not highly seasoned which is great if you have stomach or health conditions. It's still very flavorful with the herbs and marinades etc that they use. They have a variety of desserts and healthy and unhealthy options. Fish, chicken, meat, salad, different breads. My first time at a Luby's and it was great. The cafeteria style had so many choices that I couldn't decide. I just went with the fried chicken. I opted for the dark meat and it was cooked just right, juicy and tender. Not bad for under $11 with all the fixings I chose. read more

Yes, 4 stars! Here's why. I come here weekly. The kids actually love this place. I'm assuming it's the home cooked food feeling. What I like is the food is always consistent. You can seriously order anything your pallet so desires. If you feel like turkey, they got it. Feel like chop steak, they got it. Liver, yes they sometimes have it. Wanna play it safe, fried fish or chicken, yup they got it. They have so many sides. They have a good little dessert choice. Carrot cake is yummy!!!!! Have kids? Your kids meals come with a free jello! The sweet tea is on point! The con: it's usually packed. Also, it's a older crowd. Usually seniors come here. At first it makes you feel out of place but after you come a few times, you get to appreciate the place. I now just sit and thank the greatest one that I'm alive and youthful. I'm sad to report this is the only Luby's still operating in El Paso. The food quality is still outstanding and served fresh. You'll never get a cold or soggy meal here. We went on a Sunday and although it was fairly busy, the usual entrees were still available. In the past they would run out of my favorites often. This buffet seems safe. All patrons remain masked in the serving line, so less contamination to the food. Our server was very attentive. Highly recommend the fried fish, liver, roast beef and they have excellent desserts. read more

There are also a lot of add-on options like soups, salads, desserts, and of course, additional entrees or sides. I opted for Baked Tilapia with Fried Okra and Roasted Red Potatoes. Also, a small salad and a bowl of Green Chile Chicken Soup. Ruben got Chicken Fried Steak with Brown Gravy. The only thing I truly enjoyed was the soup; it was delicious. Breakfast buffet! We went kind of early for lunch on Saturday, I was not looking forward because of my previous bad experiences. As I was snooping around I saw breakfast items at 11:35 am! Praise Baby Jesus! The man told me it was a breakfast buffet Saturday and Sundays from 8am to 12pm though their website says 11:00! But whatever, I was not going to miss this great offer of 7.99 not including the drink! I had the Migas, eggs and chorizo, barbacoa, sausage, potatoes, menudo, grits, and a cinnamon roll! They also had pancakes, bacon, waffles, other sweet bread, and regular eggs! Everything was delicious, even the menudo, grits which I added sugar free syrup, and the yummy barbacoa. Since I got there late I was able to ask for an extra plate of eggs and chorizo before they closed. Would I come again? Of course and it's affordable than the other breakfast buffets. I worked at a Luby's before and I can tell you from first hand experience that the place is very clean and everything is made from scratch. Even their mayo. Fresh baked bread and desserts daily. You can even eat healthy at Luby's. Lots of options to choose from, too. Plus, you know it doesn't have any additives or preservatives in it. Reasonable prices, too. There are people and families here of all ages. Not just "old people". Besides, " old people" are awesome! You could learn a lot from talking to them. I love Luby's!! read more

I ordered their Thanksgiving dinner because I didn't feel like cooking just for two people. First, to pick up it was a complete mess. They forgot to give me the mash potatoes (also my fault because I didn't notice because I was already irritated by the bad service). The turkey was bland, no flavor at all. Not even the brown gravy saved it, because it wasn't good either. The candies yams were basically the canned ones, even canned ones have more flavor. They gave me the wrong bread, I ordered white and gave me wheat but it was really good, that was probably the best part and the ham was decent. Those the things are the only reason why I give them two stars. I would never get their thanksgiving food again, I regret paying $70.00 for it. read more

Today officially marks the first time I've had good cafeteria food, as well as the first time I've had good mass-produced eggs. Two things that previously seemed to be mutually exclusive in the food world found here together? Mind officially blown. Everything that I tried was good and of high quality, with good flavor. Definitely not the typical outcome of AYCE breakfast places (every Saturday and Sunday morning from 8 - 12). The Belgian waffles were the perfect balance of crispy but soft, the over easy eggs were cooked expertly, and the red enchiladas were flavorful and had great consistency. This far surpassed my expectations of a place I stumbled upon randomly while waiting for my car to be detailed down the street. As icing on the cake, it only cost me $6.49! My husband's office used Luby's to cater in their Thanksgiving lunch and it was delicious!! I haven't eaten inside of a Luby's in over 20 years, but now I might have to make my way into one. We decided to go to Lubys for Thanksgiving due to recent knee surgery and just not really wanting to cook. We got there at 11:15 a.m. The line was very long, which we expected. They advertised on line, sent email and in the restaurant, a stuffed turkey leg. Looked good in ALL the pictures. One problem...they didn't have them and the serving line knew nothing about it. Even after pointing out the sign that was above their heads. Oh well. Settled for paperthin "turkey", dressing, mac & cheese, cauliflower, and mashed potatoes with canned cranberry sauce and a spinach salad. Sadly, EVERYTHING was cold and had no flavor whatsoever, except for maybe the spinach salad. $48 for 3 of us....RIDICULOUS!!! I dont mind waiting over an hour to be served but Lubys should be embarrased!!! I might have expected cold bland food at the end of the day but not shortly after opening. The only positive not was the runner at our table. I'm done with Lubys. Should've gone to CB across town. read more
