With all the good reviews, I had high expectations, but in the end we received an expensive and disappointing meal with a great atmosphere. In the end it was nothing I couldn't whip up at home with whatever was around. If you're a foodie, i suggest you skip this place. My wife and I ordered: Mozz tomato basil plate - Tapas size at entree price. Very basic ingredients and presentation. We ordered the next appetizer in hopes of a better experience. Peanut noodle salad - cold, disparate and simple. Rostered Planters tossed w a thin peanut butter type sauce with only the mere hint of ginger. Forgettable. If you charge $8 for it, do something special. Scallops - overcooked and $31! Eat them quick because once they cool off they're closer to hockey pucks. Brown rice needed flavor badly and needs to be integrated into the meal in a meaningful way. Two cole slaw type sides gave it some variety but didn't complement the scallops, nor could I differentiate between them. Came with a small dish of something that only tasted of soy sauce... Really? Crab Cakes - Overpowering celery/dill flavor leaves only the texture of the crab. The same issue with brown rice and cold slaw here... same sides two different dishes. :/ The decor from the tables to the bathroom art is unique, fun, and high quality. I wish the food would match it. We'll pass next time. read more

We ordered their food to-go the past couple of days and enjoyed it as a picnic in the park that is across the street. The food is delicious. We enjoyed the desserts too. read more

Nice ambiance and service. Food is oddly flavorless. The other reviews about this are right. Wish I had listened.

Great chicken cheese steak with cooked fried onions. Friendly atmosphere and very accommodating! Thanks again for the positive experience!! read more

Louisa's - Seafood Near Me - Cape May, New Jersey

Adorably cozy space, lovely ambiance, quality ingredients and good service. It's the cooking that was lacking at Louisa's. Our meal started with a beautiful seasonal farm salad that hit the mark. But the flounder entree was average and delicate Cape May scallops were seared to a crisp. Mains are served with bland cabbage slaw and tasteless brown rice which seems so uninspired when summer vegetables are available. We wanted to love Louisa's but dinner fell flat. read more

Hadn't been back for a number of years. Snuck in early so we got a table. They are still cooking to the upper limits of seafood and other Farm to table cuisine. If you can go, go. you don't have to dress fancy you have to just be prepared to eat some very very well prepared food. As a little ncarrot: I think they have one of the best chocolate stores I have ever visitedAttached to the restaurant I have no clue as to how many different types of bars they have but shame on you for missing out. The food was so fresh and uniques here! The crab cakes were delicious and their dessert was seasonal which was so nice. Friendly staff and great service! It looks so cute, wish we could have eaten inside but takeout was just as delicious! read more

I'd give another half star if I could. It's a sweet place with a sweet staff and my fish was well prepared. However the staff while clearly nice people did a fairly lousy job of service. My mom ordered a soup for her starter and then a salad for her entree. After making it clear her soup should come first, they both came at the same time, to a table that did not have room for it. As I said, my fish was delicious, but not at all enhanced by the brown rice underneath. Then they cleared our plates and then we sat and sat and sat and sat. Many of the desserts seemed interesting and we were planning on purchasing one, but when no one returned to our table for over 15 minutes while we sat with nothing in front of us, we opted for just the check. They are clearly popular, and don't need my business. And they also won't have it again. read more

This place is great. Great location, great food, great prices. Love this place! We will be back.

Always come here when visiting Cape May. A favorite of my mom and I. The food is fresh and delicious and the service is great!

Sorry to say but the experience didn't live up to all the 5 star ratings. We had 7:15 reservation outside and were seated at 7:40. We received the water and bread after seating. Order for the beet salad, crab cakes and fresh Florida shrimp was taken at 7:51. Salad was presented pretty quickly and was very good with the exception of the size of the onion slices being way too large. Then the wait began. The main courses were served 55 minutes after ordering. While the crab cakes and shrimp were very good, the brown rice was cold, dry and unseasoned. The slaw was barely dressed with chunks of the core mixed in. I pity the poor servers there, they were kept really running and still managed to smile. Oh, and I failed to mention that this was on a Wednesday evening in the off-season. Not recommended when there are so many other very good restaurants in Cape May. Look elsewhere! read more

Unfortunately, I have to agree with a number of the negative reviews. The food is bland, lacking any flavor or seasoning. I am not one to add much salt, pepper , or sauce, but I was looking for anything to liven up the food. I dined with a group of four and this sentiment was unanimous. The menu is pricey, so I would have expected much better. The reputation for the desserts was the reason for our visit, but this was also a disappointment. (Who ever heard of bread pudding served cold?) By the way, they should fix the A/C. The condensation from the system was dripping from the ceiling onto our table all evening. There are lots of terrific fine dining restaurants in Cape May. This is not one of them. Try Tisha's, Washington Inn, A Ca Mia, 410 Bank, Peter Shields, Iccara, or Sapore. You will thank me later. read more

First time to Cape May in many years, a rare night with our son who is serving in the USCG in Cape May this summer. What a perfect choice for our only dinner! Utterly delightful. The decor, ambiance, food, and service were all 5+ stars. I love BYOB, and the liquor store next door has a good selection of beer and wine. Of our 3 entrees, the grilled scalllops was the winner. Bread pudding dessert was excellent. Perfect evening. Will be at the top of our list for our next visit to Cape May. read more

My husband and I went and there were no tables. And so we decided to go back at the agreed on later available time. We went exploring the town for a bit, bought lego-candy, had cocktails and finally went to buy wine at the liquor store just down the street. It's BYOB! We came back, but still no table. We waited, and waited and waited.... and finally got a table. After reading the reviews, we had figured it would be worth the wait. We shared the sesame noodle appetizer to start with. It was really, really tahini-y and therefore tasted more Middle-Eastern rather than Asian. I make sesame noodles all the time and as far as I know, you're supposed to use sesame-paste for it, not tahini. Tahini is for falafel and hummus. Apart from that, they really didn't taste note-worthy. As a main we both ordered fish. The fish came with a cabbage salad and brown rice. The ingredients were all fresh, but didn't have much else going for them. My fish came with a BBQ sauce that was cloyingly sweet and had nothing to cut through it. My husband's fish came with a sriracha sauce that tasted just like mayonnaise. I liked his sauce because I like mayonnaise, he doesn't. Based on these dishes, we skipped dessert. All in all I would say that we were disappointed. We felt we could whip up better food ourselves with not much effort and we're not even great home-cooks. We also had to ask for the cheque twice as they forgot us the first time. I guess that is just one of these things that can happen and we might not even have noticed had we not already been unhappy with our dinner there. read more

Fun place. Love the cozy atmosphere. Great place to talk to people. The food is divine, fresh, fresh, fresh! Can't wait to go back. November 2011: We came back this weekend and I can't say enough good things about this place! The only problem I had was not being able to eat everything on the menu. I wanted to try it all. Guess the only answer is to keep coming back. May, 2012: I feel the need to update my past review after our third visit to Louisa's. I still maintain my 5 star review. This is real food cooked by real people. I don't understand some of the negative comments posted by other reviewers. Thirty years in business and a packed house every might, they are certainly doing something right! The food is good, reasonable and fresh. The waitresses are friendly and very accommodating. I love the interior of the restaurant, all hand decorated and brightly colored. Yes, you can purchase raffle tickets for Louisa's old signage and even purchase a Louisa's apron - and all the proceeds go directly to the Food Bank. Eating well and giving back to those less fortunate sure feels good to me. Louisa's, from the exterior right down to the food, is obviously all made by hand and with love. read more

This is one of the best places of the otherwise ridiculously pricy food scene in cape may. The food is simple, but, since it is tasty and not pretentious, you are not disappointed or annoyed. We had crab cakes and a grilled bluefish on a bed of rice and cabbage ($20 each), and we were happy with our dishes. The bluefish was a little bit dry, but not too much. Frankly nothing memorable, but if your expectations are right you will have a nice evening. Byob. One downside is that we had to wait 20 minutes before getting seated despite having a booking. This is quite unpleasant. read more

You are crammed into a ridiculously small space after probably waiting at least 20 minutes past your rez time for mediocre food. People come here because it's inexpensive food, but the dishes have simple preparations that do not highlight the flavor of the food. If your thing is iceberg lettuce & bland preparations of cod & bluefish, you will like it here. Food frequently arrives luke warm at your table. The appeal of this place is beyond belief. It is the epitome of the adage that "there's no accounting for taste." I will say the food is fresh, and the service is respectable. At least one of the girls has been there for quite some time, and is adorably cute, but she isn't the cook. I would bet a million dollars the family that owns this has no true formal training. There is no chef in the kitchen; they're cooks. They wing it, and while it's not terrible, it's not memorable in any way. I've eaten here 3 times (the first time it was good) over the past 5 years. After the last time when my meal was comped because of so many screw ups, I will never return. If all you're looking for is not to cook tonight, hey, bon appetit. How anyone (Jeffrey P, I'm talking to you) could marvel that Louisa's passes every expectation for seafood in Cape May is so laughable as to be idiotic. It's a dock town with fresh catch coming in every day, even in the winter. This place does not make the top 10 for CM, and it's not even close. read more

Louisa's is a great little BYOB in Cape May NJ. Little is not really the word-it's tiny. A reservation is a must at Louisa's, and you may want to call as much as a week ahead during the summer months when the NJ shore is teeming with the washed and unwashed masses. But the food is probably some of the best I've had "down the shore." It certainly beats the better-known dining options in Cape May. The menu is set daily and items are crossed off the board as the kitchen runs out. The seafood at Louisa's is very good; mostly fish, but sometimes scallops, shrimp and the like. And there is usually a nice selection of non-seafood also. Good food, at a reasonable price, and a BYOB-what's not to like? And how unlike dining anywhere else at the Jersey shore? read more

This is a really small, family run cafe (with only 9 tables - so make sure you book!!). Louisa's was recommended to us by a local and we absolutely loved it... quirky, quaint, delicious/simple food and reasonable size portions... everything is locally grown or organic and there was absolutely nothing we didn't enjoy! We don't normally eat desserts but they were fabulous! :-) It's a BYO cafe... but if you forget, there's a liquor store within 100 feet ... An absolute must if you are in Cape May and enjoy good food. read more

There is something quaint, cute and beachy about Louisa's. It's a small place and the tables are close together, so you get to know your dining neighbor. If you're looking for something private, this isnt for you. The dinners, specials and desserts are posted on a blackboard and can change, but there are a lot of staples. My biggest disappointment is that the sides are standard, brown rice and cabbage slaw. Both are underwhelming and tasteless. This hasnt changed in all the years we have been coming here. I'm hoping that my review will change this, but it's not likely. The starters were good, a Tomato crab bisque and Ceasar Salad. My wife had the crab cakes which were decent but not as full of crab meat as I would expect. It had a cucumber tasting tartar sauce which was OK. I had the sea scallops. They weren't as good as I've had elsewhere recently, a little on the tough side and I really didn't care for the giner sauce that it came with. Desserts are usually excellent but we didn't care for the Chocolate pie, It was flourless and fudge like. They didn't describe it as such otherwise we would've made another choice. The service was OK, not great. This is a cash only BYOB place so you can save some money but the prices are not cheap. read more

Louisa's is delicious and fresh!!! I loved the small restaurant feel and the service was great, even though there was only one waitress for 5-6 tables. It's a BYOB so bring something! We didn't have an appetizer, but we did have entrees and desserts. Each entree was 20 dollars and it was nice because some came with "extra sides". I had the Atlantic Cod with Aioli with Ratatoille which came with the baseline cabbage and brown rice. The Salmon with Lime BBQ sauce was also delicious. But my favorite was the PANNA COTTA with Raspberry/Strawberry/Cranberry Compote. YUM. So well done. I just wish it was bigger cuz I could have eaten 5 of them! Overall a good place. I would make a reservation during the busy season. Off season: remember it's a tiny place so i'd call ahead. read more

Let's face it: our lives in 2018 have become overwhelming with the amount of choices and options at our disposal. I personally become anxious if I go to Chipotle because there are just too many dishes and toppings to choose from. I often crave simplicity, and Louisa's satisfies these culinary desires. The handwritten chalkboard menu changes daily based on the availability of local seafood and produce. There are several dishes that never change, but be sure to come early in the evening for the best selection! Here are some important things about the menu: 1. Every entree comes with the same two sides: brown rice and cabbage slaw (which is oh so addicting). These have graced every plate since Louisa's opened in 1980. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Complain you may, but your pickiness will not cause roasted redskins and a vegetable medley to appear beside your plate. 2. If you don't like seafood, this is not the restaurant for you. There are always the (AMAZING) vegetable cake or homemade pasta entrees, but the majority of the menu is fish. If you have younger or picky kids, go somewhere else. 3. If you're trying to decide between an appetizer or dessert, ALWAYS go for the dessert. The owner's sister makes every dessert fresh daily. The chocolate bread pudding is my favorite food of all time, and my husband is literally obsessed with the chocolate pie. The chocolate bread pudding, chocolate pie, and key lime pie can be purchased to-go at any time next door at Louisa's Chocolate Bar. The seasonal desserts are delicious as well; their fruit crisps have a special place in my heart. 4. You MUST have a reservation, and it's best to make it at least a few days in advance. You can book up to a month in advance if you feel so inclined. 5. CASH ONLY. I repeat, CASH ONLY. There is an ATM across the street at Collier's in an emergency. Entrees run about $28-32 so plan accordingly. It is also BYOB (grab a bottle of Wilde Cock wine to bring!) 6. The entrance is the blue door. There is nowhere to wait inside so don't show up super early for your reservation. 7. Be sure to check out the beautiful painting of the restaurant by local artist Leanne Scheff! Also, go upstairs to the restroom. You won't regret it! In the last few years Louisa's has undergone a change of ownership from the famous Louisa herself to her former cook and protege, Will Riccio. Some minor things have been changed, but the recipes have been the same for 39 years. Both Louisa and Will share the same values and pure love for Cape May, and it's evident in their food. I cannot say enough about how incredible both of them are -- they treat everyone like family. Louisa's is hands down my favorite restaurant on earth, and I don't say that lightly. If you love simple and delicious food as much as I do, you will adore this whimsical little cafe. read more

This was our second visit here and the food was outstanding again. I had the monkfish stew and my partner had the scallops. Great flavors, perfectly cooked and delicious. Sweet little gem of a restaurant right next to the Washington Street mall. read more

We got lucky that the restaurant was open on a Sunday night in the winter(president's weekend). Upon entering, one of the servers checked us in and let us choose from the 15 or so tables. The chalkboard had lots of tempting options, and as we thought about our choices, water and bread came via one of two servers that took care of everyone dining that night. I got smoked salmon rillette, which is a spread, served with crackers. my husband got the romaine, beet and feta salad that had a light vinaigrette dressing. both were very good and fresh. main courses were stewed monkfish in tomato /caper/ olive sauce, which was expertly prepared, and served over brown rice with slaw, and blackened swordfish with a red pepper sauce on the side with the same sides. The swordfish was perfectly executed, and succulent. the sides were underwhelming but the large portion of delicious fish needed no accompaniment. after all that it was hard to imagine dessert, but there were so many choices- which all sounded great- that we got chocolate bread pudding with salted caramel sauce, and shared it. delish! read more

If you want good seafood, Louisa's is the place to eat in Cape May! The place is quaint with not much seating, so reservations are recommend. I would suggest an early seating when they first open at 5:00. This restaurant is farm to table with a limited menu written on a chalk board ,we had the crab cakes and the scallops, both served with a brown rice and a cabbage slaw. Our meals were delicious! We ate it all so we had no room to sample any of their desserts. I can't wait to eat here again! This restaurant is also BYOB and cash only. read more

This place really lives up to the style it's aiming for. A warm welcoming atmosphere with lots of character, sweet waitresses and very good food. Simona and I shared a bowl of the Silver Queen Corn Tomato Soup which was good and fresh with a little spice. I had the flounder entree. It was a great flaky fish cooked perfectly. The horseradish dill sauce was in the side, and although I liked it I preferred the fish just as it was. The salad that came with it was also good. All on this plate was light and refreshing. Simona had the Local Scallops w/ Tamari and Ginger sauce. I tried this and like it. Simona really liked her scallops. For Dessert I had the Dark Chocolate Bread Pudding with caramel and Celtic sea salt. Simona had the Vanilla Bread Pudding with brown sugar whiskey sauce. We both really liked and preferred her choice. Great experience. Highly recommended for a couple or a small group. read more

Seasonal, call to confirm days and times when open. Dinner only, Tuesday through Sunday from 5 to 9 (sometimes closes earlier on weeknights). CASH ONLY. Reservations recommended (necessary for summer weekends); call after 4 PM; reservations accepted for current week only. BYOB. Literally contains 20 seats (not 20 tables), can accommodate parties of 2, 3, or 4. Louisa's is my favorite restaurant of all the restaurants I've ever been to. The menu is short, (the antithesis of many sorry restaurants with 50+ menu items). My wife always orders crab cakes. To her, Louisa's crab cakes are simply the best and she has not found their equal elsewhere. I always order snapper bluefish. The bluefish is cooked to perfection, with bites that melt in my mouth, with a delicious, delicate flavor. Despite the sauce suggested next to our dish on the blackboard, we order whatever suits us for the evening. My wife usually picks a fresh fruit cobbler for dessert and I usually go for Louisa's chocolate pie with orange apricot glaze. We know about (and enjoy) the brown rice and the cabbage salad. We know there are only 20 seats. We know it is cash only and we have to make reservations. We know it is usually a tight fit, loud at times, and we may be chatting with the patrons next to us. We know it is BYOB and we have to open our own. We know that sometimes one waitress covers all 10 tables. We know they've figured out a sensible matrix for seating so that the dishes can be prepared sequentially, and that as a result we might peer into Louisa's, see 4 people, yet be told that they are booked. We know there are no tablecloths or cloth napkins. These are all things we love about Louisa's. Louisa's is not like other restaurants! It is not fancy, showy, or pretentious. It is a tiny gem with its own relaxed style. I have a long list of restaurants that I don't like. I don't go back to them. Louisa's is on my far shorter list of restaurants to which I will return as often as possible. read more

Louisa's - The menu boards which change with what's fresh - Seafood Near Me - Cape May, New Jersey

Had dinner here this evening. Wasn't really sure what to expect but thought Louisa's would be on par with the likes of 410 Bank St. It's a very small and dimly lite restaurant which I'm told is hard to get reservations. Overall, I was disappointed. The first course, a fresh beet salad, was pedestrian at best. No seasoning and a bland unrecognizable vinaigrette. There was an abundance of raw onions on both my salad and my wife's feta and jersey tomato salad. She liked her first course. My entree, the ginger cod patty. It was eh. Nothing to write home about. My wife had the snapper which was better than mine. The Flavorful sauce and crispy skin was nice. Both entrees came with brown rice and a cabbage salad which really seemed like raw chucks of cabbage. The highlight was my wife's vanilla bread pudding. I was very good. Almost soufflé like. My chocolate bread pudding was dense and cold. Prices were modest with most entrees around $22. Service was good except for when the waitress dropped the bottle opener on the table for me to open my bottle of wine. Kinda strange. Byob is always good. read more

Louisa's is a local favorite. The seafood is fresh, the bread is fresh and good (a rarity in south Jersey), and the coffee is strong and delicious. The service is good (not great, but friendly enough). The few times we've gone, the music is enjoyable---usually some Cuban beats or something like that. Also, it's BYOB, which is great. The side dishes could definitely use improvement. Every dish comes with bland brown rice and uncooked, sliced cabbage (dubbed "cabbage salad" on the menu, but it's really just sliced cabbage). I'm not sure why they've stuck to that. I'm no chef, but I can cook much tastier side dishes at home. They need to get with it on that. The place is tiny---so much so that during season, I only go on a weeknight, at precisely 5 p.m. (when they open) and only with a reservation. And don't think that you'll get let in if you get there at 4:58. Nope---5 p.m. on the dot. They're cash only, so prepare for that. The good news is that they're not quite as expensive as many of the fine dining restaurants in Cape May. When I've gone, dinner for two has come to approx. $80, not including the tip. Overall, Louisa's isn't as great as many locals tout it to be, but it's definitely worth trying for a weeknight meal. read more

Small but lovely place. BYOB VERY small. European style where you are basically eating dinner with the people sitting next to you. In our case, this was part of the fun! Limited menu, mostly seafood. Not crazy about the main courses, but the people sitting next to us were gushing over their dishes, so perhaps we made the wrong choice! I had the swordfish with summer salsa. It was very basic, with dry rice under it and a strange pile of raw cabbage. I chose to dump the salsa over the fish and rice which made it very flavorful. My friend had the peppered salmon. It was very basic, not at all spicy., but tasty if you like salmon. Also came with the rice and raw cabbage. She did not eat that part. Had the peach blueberry crisp for dessert- WOW. SO tasty! The couple next to us had chocolate pie with apricot sauce and raved over it as well. read more

My grandmother lives in Cape May and I have gone to Louisa's with her several times in the past decade-plus. In fact, we had yet another delicious meal here just last night. This morning I thought I would check out their Yelp reviews and I was pretty surprised to see a lot of negative reviews from this summer. Louisa's has always been a tiny restaurant with simple but fresh food. Yes, many of the main courses are served with a cabbage salad and brown rice. They're delicious, and a good compliment to the fresh fish. The desserts (homemade by Louisa each day) are also fantastic. They're homey but have a special touch. Last night we ended our meal with a vanilla bread pudding with brown sugar whiskey sauce and it was a perfect end to our meal. Yes, some of the tables are very close together, and if that's not your thing I understand. But if that doesn't bother you - and you enjoy eating in an atmosphere with character - you'll love Louisa's. I should also note that it is BYOB, cash only, and the service is excellent. read more

After 6 or 7 visits over the last few years, tonight we had a major disappointment at Louisa's. Food was good, as usual, but prices have gone up -- no way around that, I suppose, things cost what they cost -- but the service was awful. The same two gals as ever, but tonight, for some reason, they couldn't be bothered to pay attention to us. I wanted dessert -- but finally settled for just the check. There was a larger, noisier party that was more interesting. Not going back. read more

Louisa's has been a favorite of my family for yearssss. Most of their food is local, and all their desserts are homemade. Jersey tomatoes in the salads, fresh fish in the entrees, and local blueberries, peaches in the dessert. Get your dessert a la mode for the extra $2, its so worth it. You must get all three courses. You are totally cheating yourself if you don't. If you need to save money, buy a less expensive table wine. Sauvingon Blanc goes extremely well with their dishes, and you can get a decent bottle for $8-9. This is the byob experience I compare all others to, and none even come close. This is by far the best place to eat in South Jersey. Be sure to call for reservations early in the week. read more
