I called ahead this morning to confirm they had a specific concrete mix in stock. They assured me they had 60 lb bags. I drove over specifically to support a small business, only to be told by the store manager that they actually had zero stock until Monday. Mistakes happen, but the manager's attitude was completely unacceptable. He wasn't apologetic at all, ignored me mid-conversation, and just started helping someone else. A larger store would have at least tried to solve the problem or offer a solution. I won't be coming back. read more

They lost a $450 sale from me today, and I will never return. Hopefully all of my neighbors will do the same. Los Altos Hardware is the Google of hardware stores, lol. Google's HQ is nearby, so... What do I mean? Well, you know how you go to Google to find anything on the internet? LAH has darned near everything under one roof! Yes, it's mostly regular retail pricing and more expensive than HD/Lowes/Amazon, but it's convenient, much better service and LOCAL!!! Called to ask if they had silicon oil or grease. They did and I was about 10min it's away. There is a lot of parking around the area which was nice since I was on a time crunch. The hardware store was clean and organized. When I walked a gentleman and a lady was behind two cash registers and asked if I needed help in finding anything. I explained my situation and the guy knew exactly what I needed. When we went to the product area he explained to me the difference between silicon oil, wd 40, oil,grease, cleaner etc... I was having trouble reassembling a Grohe shower valve handle. I took the parts in, where Henry (the proprietor) and his plumbing assistant Zack walked me through the necessary steps, and advised me on valve lubrication. I did not need to buy anything. I've been working on my house and I go to True Value Hardware more than I think I would like to. Every time I am there, someone is always around to help me and give me suggestions or direct me to the item I need in the store. I think that the staff is great and unless you need a specialty item, they usually have the essentials. Some of the staff is more knowledgeable than the others but overall the staff communications is great. I haven't had one time that if the consultant, I was working with, didn't ask another employee for help if they couldn't find exactly what I needed. read more

I just replaced the bathroom faucet system but the connection between the sink stopper fitting and the PVC drain developed a leak. I tried silicone for 24 hrs to plug the leak but it continued. I took a couple of pictures and went to LA Hardware the next day. The person behind the counter looked at the pictures as I explained the problem. He immediately said I needed a gasket and walked me over to the aisle and knew exactly what size I needed. He then explained where to insert the washer as well as how to insert it. The Slip Joint Washer cost was $1.19. I was dreading that I would have to bring in the fittings but this guy knew the solution immediately so I avoided a 2nd trip to the store. He was so detailed in his explanation on how to apply the washer that I really appreciated his thoughtfulness for me who is not a handyman. My only suggestion is I wish the employees would wear name badges so I could commend them on Yelp and to their superiors. read more

The owner Henry plus his whole staff are not only incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and friendly they have on numerous occasions gone way out of their way to help me on a home project repair. They even let me "borrow" a tool one day since they knew I would only use it once a decade, and just asked I bring it back "sometime in the next few weeks", did they need a credit card? "No you'll be back..." and this weekend they saved me $1500 with a plumbing part the plumbers said we couldn't get. In a repair jam? Stop by Los Altos hardware first. I forgot I had a written a review for these folks already and I came here to write another one because of the excellent service and selection these folks have. The staff makes it amazing, but this tiny looking shop from the outside packs a lot in. I've not had a problem finding what I needed and I've been here a lot. I'm always surprised with how they can have such a wide selection! It helps that they are so close to anyone around Los Altos, you don't have to go all the way to Cupertino or Sunnyvale to get what you need. I had an issue with a door knob at home and visted the Los Altos HW store. For starters, it looks like a country store in the 60s which is kinda cool. Wonderful customer service - my car keys are broken and I came here to ask for their assistance. They were very generous with their time and knowledge. Everyone was very kind at the store. They gave me tissues, while waiting, since I had allergies. I came three times. They were super persistent with trying to figure out how to get a new key to work on my car. It seems that my key has an extra security function that only the manufacturer keys would work. Since it took them so long to figure it out, they gave me a big discount in the end, but I didn't really feel like it was necessary. read more
