I bought several Anderson patio doors from Bruce Bauer. The screen door on one of them was chipped and they were supposed to replace it under the warranty. This was several years ago. Since then, I've visited and emailed them at least 20 times and they either don't respond or say they're waiting for a response from Anderson. Now they've just ghosted me. I can't decide whether to continue to press them, forget the whole thing or take them to small claims court. In any case, I'd advise you to buy your windows and doors from another supplier. read more

Cheaper and 10x Quality than Lowes or Home Depot for lumber. And priceless advice. Been going here for years. Writing cause I realized these local stores are dying out, so went there instead of the Big Box HW stores even though I thought it would cost more. Guess what their price for 12' 2x4 s was with $1. The man who got my lumber checked each expertly for straightness rejecting 30% of the 2x4s. If you have been to the Big Box stores you know you face an enormous pile of bad lumber on top with no where to pile the bad stuff and customers shopping for bbq grills getting their heads in the way of your rejects. Not only that but they provided free scrap lumber. Advice that saves hundreds and hours of frustration and/or failed projects: For example the right glue for a corrugated plastic roof. Who at BB stores will give a reliable answer. Think of the cost or times you bought worthless on sale bits or tools. Save money and keep your local home project allies in business! Don't be dazed by specials or a 10% price difference here or there, think big picture! read more

They have a lot of lumber on-site for quick pick-up or delivery. They had the best prices for SVG cedar boards we used to build a fence with, and are happy with the quality of the completed fence. The staff are very helpful in finding the right hardware, for example they helped me figure out the customization options for Emtek door hardware (there are many combinations of style, function & finish) and ordered the right ones with very quick (less than 1 week) turnaround. They have a great showroom with patio doors, windows, door hardware, fence materials, etc - this is a place where you can look at samples, ask questions, and be confident in what you are buying. read more

They even custom cut a piece for me (at a very inexpensive price I might add). The people were very friendly and helpful. This place reminded me of the old Southern Lumber in San Jose. There aren't many lumber yards in my area anymore. They had just about everything. Someday I'll go back there when I have more time to look around. read more

If you've spent a couple decades without a local lumberyard, what a breath of fresh air this crew is. I was looking uncertainly at plywood when a guy finished with another customer, asked what I was looking for, and then *said they could cut the wood for me*. I almost cried with relief. As is common with vendors that thrive on commercial customers, none of the wood has prices on it. I paid maybe a bit less than a box store, but for beautiful 1/2" sanded plywood: not only did they have it right there, but I didn't even have to go through the stack to find something that wasn't terrible. I'm more than happy to drive the extra 10 miles to shop here. read more

They would not quote me some Marvin windows when I had all but decided on buying some in my extensive research of window brands and trade offs. I was introduced to this dealer through Marvin's website and things started off cordially, but turned south after I revealed that I had been comparing multiple windows lines in an attempt to find the one that best matched my selection criteria (in no particular order: thermal efficiency, low maintenance, quality). The salesman gave me his take of the lines I had researched, which I found to be somewhat misleading (see attached). Most egregious is pointing out Marvin as being "better" because they use cardinal glass, since all three companies use cardinal glass. In addition, all three companies use window components made by Truth Hardware. He did not appear happy when I called him out on this, and after some back and forth, told me that it wouldn't be fair for him to give me a quote because it would be a dramatic price difference (?!). I replied that I did care about quality and did not understand his hesitation, at which point he said he was happy to help and asked me to provide availability. After I did so, there was complete radio silence... I guess they just don't care and ghost their potential customers. Ultimately, I did end up buying Marvin windows, but from Justin at Argonaut Windows, who was way more transparent about each product lines' trade offs and was happy to answer questions and quote as needed. Some other thoughts: 1) these brands do vary significantly but they also have multiple lines that are not created equal and are priced accordingly. Fit and finish also depends heavily on line (Marvin essential and elevate will not be better than Kolbe Vistaluxe for instance) 2) They are literally a Jeldwen distributor (La Cantina and IWP Aurora) and they're trashing their own product lines, which seems like a bad way of doing business and something their suppliers would not appreciate, rather than just being straightforward about things being nuanced rather than easily summed up. read more

Super disappointed with the quality of windows: the large window panels don't close properly. Even the lock was so flimsy it just fell off, when trying to close the panel. Window screens clips also was super flimsy, see photo. The paint off the screen is chipping off. All this within three months of moving to our newly updated house! read more

But they left me with a 5 star impression as "Joel T." replied in a professional manner as opposed to the standard "less helpful" short response from other local businesses. CJ saved my day. As a female who is not handy whatsoever, I was majorly stressing out about a section of deteriorating backyard fence that was coming apart. I wanted a quick, easy, and inexpensive fix so that I could kick the replacement can down the alley for another year or two. CJ was so incredibly helpful and gave me a clever (and very cheap!) idea and even cut a piece of lumber for me. A shoutout to Chris, as well, who stepped in and gave me some drilling tips. I have been waiting 6 months for a front door that was supposed to take 10-12 weeks. Never any follow up from Bruce Bauer. I am the only one pushing to get this completed. I email every week and every week the delivery is pushed out. BB delivered one door a month late but it was warped. Still waiting for the replacement so I have a functioning door. read more

The last couple days I've made three trips to Bruce Bauer, and have dealt with three different employees. All very helpful, however, it was employee #67 (name wasn't on the receipt) that inspired me to write this review. So, I inherited a crib from some family friends, and unfortunately, it didn't have all the hardware necessary to put it together--hence my separate trips. Luckily, for me it's right down the road from where I live, so I got the chance to get a little exercise skateboarding, instead of driving. Also, I realize Bruce Bauer isn't exactly an Ace or Home Depot, but I've been here multiple times, for several different projects, and they've always had what I needed. From custom wood cutting, to all your hardware needs, they got it. They're a lot bigger on the inside, than they look from the outside, and their prices are just as low as what you'd find in a Home Depot/Ace. Moreover, I rather support a local Mom and Pops operation anyway. In any case, this last trip, I only needed to swap out a couple screws. Even though the screws I actually needed were longer and were more expensive, he did an even trade and didn't charge me the difference. Lastly, I needed one barrel/joint connector, which was only $0.75. I had a $50 bill and my credit card. There was an issue with the terminal, and since the other ones were being used, he pulled out a dollar from his wallet, and paid for me. I even watched him put that dollar in the cash register. I told him, I was happy to wait, and maybe purchase some gummy bears or something, and he just said he was happy to help--that that's how they do business there. That was really awesome and humbling to hear. Anyhow, just wanted to say my piece and say thanks again... keep doing what you're doing fellas! I drive past probably 5-10 other lumber yards to go to this one. Their lumber prices are good (at least for me, better than Home Depot). They're always well-staffed and the staff are respectful, helpful, and kind. They'll cut all your wood to the perfect size for you. If you're looking for exact measurements for your cuts or advanced wood cuts, make sure to ask for Chris. The man is a wood cutting genius. They have a window shop on the property and the staff there are equally helpful. read more

The doors were really expensive and it was a difficult experience. I had to make an appointment to talk, and couldn't just walk in. There were no brochures with clear prices to help decision making, I needed to hire an contractor to install it and then another contractor person to finish the door. Installation should be part of a package. I want a factory finished door so I know what color I am getting. Stains vary widely based on the brand of stain and type of wood. And what if the Finisher botches the job and you have spent thousands of dollars?! Then you just spent $6,000 on a door you don't like. And you can't get a real quality finish on-site. A brushed on polyurethane can't touch a factory finish and it probably takes 24 hours for it to cure. What do you do at night time for security? Overall, I want to pick a factory finished door with a price on it and have the option of installation. Easy. I give it four stars to be fair to the rest of the store. read more

I went to price out a project and, given the plywood had no prices posted, asked checkout if I could see some sort of price list. I was just told "no", in a "if you have to ask..." manner. I'm working on remodeling my home and have been to Bruce Bauer Lumber several times now. I'm not an expert on this stuff and the staff is always very helpful in pointing me in the right direction, no matter if the purchase is big or small. The cuts I've asked them to make have always been precise. Several months ago I went in looking for the right wood to close the gap created by the removal of a pocket door. I was going to pick some plywood that I thought wood work but the person who helped me showed me something that cost half as much and actually was more appropriate for the job. Not good for short term revenue :-) but that experience has made a repeat customer out of me and now that's the first store I go to for my home improvement related purchases. read more

I was truly impressed by Bruce Bauer Lumber and Supply. I have a specialty window that requires a certain manufacturer. The window was broken and I had no idea how to fix it. I called them up and they were able to send someone by to get the measurements, and order parts. After the parts arrived, they came by to fix the window. Have ordered thousands of dollars of windows and skylights through BB over the years and typically have been pleased and referred them to others, but, had a crappy experience today with them. Special ordered a screen door for an Andersen sliding door, and when I called in to pay for it with my credit card which I've always done in the past, was told NO, had to be a written check. Really? Are they in the 21st century? Who uses written checks these days? I was sending someone else to pick it up as I don't have a car large enough for a screen door, and the pick up person doesn't have "checks". I asked if they'd take an ATM debit card and finally the sales person who I've dealt with before condescendingly told me she'd accept it as if she was doing me a HUGE favor. Wow. I try hard to support local businesses because I appreciate their service, and want them to be around, but, this is not service nor does it match the times... If you need to charge me a surcharge to use a credit card, fine, just tell me so up front and I can work with that. Come on BB you guys can do better than this... read more

Yes - prices are slightly higher than home depot. A 2x6 (8ft) piece of knotty fir would have cost $3.71 at home depot vs $3.99 at bruce bauer. But much much better quality lumber. (Although lumber prices do fluctuate) And like the rest of the reviewers have said, SUPERB customer service. The Bauer family is just so warm! And yes, free donuts on Saturday. They never rushed to answer all my questions and I felt like they really cared about the project I was doing. After getting frustrated with 2 botched lumber deliveries from Home Depot, I gave Bruce Bauer a try. It's not the kind of place that is novice-friendly per se, but employees were far more knowledgeable and helpful than your typical folks at big box stores. Prices were a little more expensive than Home Depot and Loews, but the quality and consistency of the wood was definitely better, and for something that will be visible (i.e. not just framing for a house), the extra cost was worth it. Delivered a moderate size order within 2 hours, arriving within 2 minutes of their estimated delivery time (i.e. not within 2 minutes of a 4 or 8 hour delivery window, but rather they said they would be to the site around 1:30pm, and arrived at 1:28). Delivery is also free for orders over $500. read more

I will never buy wood at Home Depot again. My 13 year old needed a couple different types and sizes of hardwood for a chess board he designed. His machine shop teacher told him about Bruce Bauer Lumber, so we stopped by last weekend. I normally dread the process of choosing and cutting lumber at Home Depot since it's so hard to find both the products and assistance... boy is this is different experience. The gentleman who helped us at Bruce Bauer turned out to be one of the family owners. He spent probably 30 minutes helping us select the wood, clamps and glue that we needed. Then we went into the Mill Room in back, where another team member helped us cut the wood into at least a dozen pieces at my son's exact specifications for no additional charge. Extra credit for fresh donut on Saturday morning. Warms my heart to find a local business that's so focused on the customer. Actually looking forward to our next lumber-related outing. read more
