Great experience with South Bay Materials! I mostly buy from material yards in the East Bay, but I've been working on a landscape project in San Jose and started coming here for materials. Everyone has been great and very helpful. They always have a good attitude, from the person taking your order to the guys loading you up. Great service all around, and I'll definitely keep coming back for our South Bay projects. Highly recommend! read more

I recently bought some mulch for my home and South Bay was extremely helpful. I called and asked for pricing a few days before my project and they helped me figure out how much I needed. Both Tyler and Nick helped me out on the phone. When I finally set up my delivery it all went super smoothly! Their driver knew what he was doing! I'll definitely be back for my future projects! read more

Easy to work with! I went in made a payment for 5 bags of soil I wanted to bag myself, picked up the bags, a shovel and funnel and picked up the soil. I was allowed to drive my car to the place I bagged my soil and load them in my truck. It is a self serve place, people seem busy and it's best to take a buddy with you if you'll think you need help. read more

Good resource for rocks for my yard. Samples available. Reasonable rates. Good delivery service.

We have used South Bay Materials for our home for a number of years. We have mulch delivered to our home in Campbell every other year and have been so impressed by the quality of your products and the service we have received. We first heard about South Bay Materials following the recommendation of the company that put in our landscaping. The professionals who work in the office are so helpful, knowledgeable and kind! The communication regarding delivery is great and the drivers are careful, professional and friendly. The materials are as described, clean and high quality. We would recommend your company highly to everyone! Diana Jonathans read more

Needed some 3/4" course gravel buying at local hardware store too expensive when you need over a 1/2 cubic yard. I bought some material from here before and it was delivered. This time i had to use my truck and was only able to get 1/2 cubic yard. It was less than buying a bunch of 50lb bags, i still need more to finish a project and start my own at my place. It must of been an off day or these guys are good at what they do. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes could of been 10 minutes. One guy at the counter and he was fast, told him I needed 3/4" gravel for drainage he gave me the price, i paid he told me where to go, drove my truck almost to the right spot, the loader told me to move over he scooped up a shovel load and dumped it in the bed. I was going to ask if that was the amount but decided not to because they do this all day and they got better things to do than to short people and it felt like a 1/2 cubic yard as long as I could hit the brakes and stop i had no issues. I will go back for whatever bulk materials I need. Just wish I would of looked around sooner on other simular jobs, this was my 2nd visit so they must be doing things right to get me to return. And when I was leaving I saw a Bosch Repair shop very close not many places to have Bosch Tools approved shops it the Bay Area, plenty of Bosch appliance shops but not many Bosch Tools, kinda weird if you ask me. read more

I dealt with South Bay Materials years ago. They were very good back then. Recently I needed some screened soil delivered. I can without pause report that they have completely upped their game, from ordering to delivery, they were flawless. read more

Bought some bark and soil for the garden. Mikel brought the soil, and very professionally and carefully , through a narrow gate opening , drove the truck and put the soil where we wanted. We thought it's impossible ! Definitely will order from them again when needed. Ten stars!! read more

Everything about this place is amazing. You can't beat South Bay material. They have a huge selection and the best prices. They also keep their yard extremely clean and organized with clear signage so there's no confusion Tyler at the front desk is awesome and a real helpful guy and always has a smile on his face and will definitely give you some knowledge to make sure you leave with the right material and also me being in the industry for about 15 years, I know a lot of loader operators are assholes but the guys that run the loaders here at South Bay material are all super chill and laid-back and very helpful overall I had a great experience and if you need bulk landscaping material this is your place or if you just wanna pull up and look around and see what they have they encourage you to do so this place definitely has a old school mom and pop feel too it read more

They are great, super chill employees and easy process. Pull up, purchase the material, drive onto the scale and they load it up, then you're good to go. read more

Good customer service, availability of materials that I needed, fair pricing, and delivered on time!

Totally pleased with the customer support and product. I will be using this company in the future.

I couldn't be happier to update this review. I revisited South Bay Materials to scope another large project -- reconstruction of 2 lawns. The gentleman and fine lady working there were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful to an extent that I have rarely seen. As a retail customer to a business that also services trades and professionals, I am always in awe of those with customer-facing skills to be so helpful and welcoming to customers with questions. The business still has an excellent inventory of materials and the pricing remains competitive. South Bay Materials is an upgrade to big box stores. 5 stars, well deserved. read more

Great experience with South Bay Materials. The young gentleman who helped us was very patient, thorough, and extremely knowledgeable. We showed him photos of some landscaping rocks, and he immediately knew what they were and their pricing. He also took the time to write down notes for items that weren't listed on the pricing sheet. Payment was straightforward and easy. I really appreciated the flexibility to prepay for multiple loads so a helper could come back later to load additional landscaping materials without me needing to be there. Overall, a very smooth and customer-friendly experience. read more

I've been coming to South Bay Materials for years, and they are hands-down the best landscape supply yard in San Jose. Their selection is massive but what really sets them apart is the staff. Nick and his team know their products and can help you calculate exactly how much yardage you need. The yard is well-organized, prices are fair, and their delivery service is reliable. Highly recommend them for both homeowners and contractors. read more

Really pleased with my experience with South Bay. I'm re-landscaping my yard and building a dry pond. South bay had everything I need from base rock to drain rock, boulders, cobble, pea gravel and decomposed granite. Staff was really helpful and self-service at their yard was pretty easy and organized. I had several material deliveries and drivers were awesome and very cooperative, especially Sal. He was really patient as to where I needed my materials and really friendly. I wholeheartedly recommend South Bay for any landscaping needs. read more

I had 15 cubic yards of mulch delivered to my house. From the time the order was placed with Tyler to the delivery of the mulch with Sal, I've received nothing but great service. Sal took great care and did an excellent job of dumping mulch precisely on the tarp that I had laid out on my driveway. These men were helpful and courteous and they made the whole process seamless. I will return for future orders and highly recommend South Bay Materials! read more

Stopped by to get planting mix for my raised bed garden. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They gave me plenty of options and ideas on filling my planters, from the $$ to the $$$. I opted for the pre-bagged stuff which was loaded into my vehicle by more pleasant and helpful staff. Prices are reasonable and they have a large selection of gardening/landscaping materials. I'll definitely use South Bay Materials for future yard projects. read more

Quick and easy to setup a delivery. Picked my choice of soil, called them to ask a few questions, paid over the phone and voila, a week later had the soil dumped right in my driveway. They called to confirm before they arrived, which was super appreciated. All good so far, noticed a few fungus gnats flying around the soil but meh, I think that's expected anytime we go organic. Will recommend! read more

We were buying some small boulders and asked for help. The person working at the counter was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the individual who was supposed to assist us outside was very rude. He was sweeping the grounds and just blew by us with all the dust and all. My wife got the worst of it since she was closer. He didn't even bother to wait until we are done in the area. When he came to us to assist, his first words, delivered in a rude tone, were: "Here's the deal, I can load the boulders into your car, but if you can't lift them out, then what good would that be?" He repeated this multiple times. It goes without saying, but it seemed like he didn't want us to buy the boulders and was trying to get us to leave. His attitude made it seem like we owed him something for helping us. We support local businesses but this is not how you treat customers. After we carried and grouped all the boulders we wanted, we called him again. This time, he told us to drive our car next to the boulders to load them, saying, "Unless YOU want to carry the boulders to your car." Very rude! At this point, I said, "Never mind. You need to work on your customer service," and we left. It's a shame--the boulders were nice, and the price was fair. We were ready to buy them, but the person working the grounds definitely needs more training in customer service. read more

Sal, the delivery driver was great. Polite, efficient, offered excellent suggestions on the best place to drop the load. I ordered 8.5 cubic yards of wood chips. All in all = an Excellent Experience. read more

I highly recommend South Bay Materials! We have had two deliveries of mulch and will definitely use them for again for our future orders. I recently DIYed my front yard landscaping, from design to execution all on our own, and I am so grateful that South Bay Material was part of it. Service: they actually have workers who are knowledgeable and experienced with landscaping with rocks. Never been to a rock yard before in my life, it was a bit challenging and intimidating. Serena was patient to answer all of my questions, reading me off the price list on all of the possible ones I asked for. She was also very helpful throughout my ordering process and answered my phone on a Saturday night when she was supposed to be off already. Eric showed me where to see things in a huge rock yard and helped me with all questions he could. Ray even started to tell me things before my question was asked. He was specially very experienced delivering boulders with his forklift - the day he delivered my boulders, he was able to place them wherever I wanted with precision and speed, and lots of patience. I can't be thankful enough. When he dumped the gravels and soil the second time, he even used a tarp to separate the two piles so they won't mix together. I am impressed! When I went back the third time for some other small things this past Saturday, the worker (don't know his name) came over without being asked to open up the pile of flagstone I called to inquire about - he was so on top of the game! Selections: They have a lot better selection than u-save rockery (the only other rock yard I know of in the south bay and have visited). Maybe this is not the best season for boulders, I have not seen as many selections of boulders compared to some other places California has (from youtube), and they don't carry California Gold boulders at this time around, so I had to pick some other ones, but they worked out eventually. They also have beautiful flagstones I found and had to bring home. Display and organization: Things are super organized. It's a huge place to walk around, but everything is showed cased well. Boulders are all marked with weight - this is super helpful. Kudos to all the workers who made all this happen. Price: Fair price! Depends on what you order, price could vary but it's your choice. I especially appreciated their boulder placement service which Ray did a fantastic job about. It's definitely going to save more if you oder in bulk because the dump truck is a flat fee. Tips: it could get crowded on weekends from my own experience. I was able to go on my off days/weekdays and very few people were there compared to Saturdays. If you want to get boulders, ask for a tape and marker, mark all boulders you want and they will walk through it with you to confirm the items, then you can schedule them to be delivered. DIY landscape isn't as hard as you think, just do your research, know what you want, and trust the workers here, you are in good hands with them. read more

Stopped by to get a couple bags of base rock and concrete sand 2x. Very nice that they sell base rock by the bag. One of the workers also showed me how to efficiently shovel the material in! Their prices are a wee bit higher but their funnels are better than other places that do self serve sacks. Would come again if I'm in the area! read more

I have always come here for my gardening material needs. They have great product and great prices. So I highly recommend them. I recently brought my foster kid here on a quest to pick out rocks for a rock painting project. A very nice lady working in the office led us around to all the rocks that would be suitable for our project. A man in the yard showed this girl how crystal are inside the Yuba rocks. She had an amazing time here, so appreciative of the attention and interest in her rock project. Does it get better than this? read more

Nice selection of materials, and best prices I've found in the Bay Area. Delivery was super simple and the driver went out of his way to place the compost in my yard, saving me TONS of time. Most places would have just dumped it on the street and moved on. Really grateful and will go to these guys always. read more

I recently had an incredible experience with South Bay Materials. I was running late to pick up some material for backyard, and it was close to closing time. We live in Delhi City, which is about an hour's drive away, and I called and spoke to Eddie & explained that it was crucial for us to get the material today. He went above and beyond to help us out. Not only Eddie/Nick leave the materials outside for us, but they also decided not to charge us. Their kindness and dedication to exceptional customer service made a huge difference. Nick and Eddie are true assets to the company, demonstrating their commitment and this wonderful gesture is remarkable. Highly recommend! --- How does that look? read more

Got some river rocks here. They have a great variety of stuff like bricks and stones.

I tried ordering 10 yards of material. I have four men waiting for the delivery. I speak with the manager and I asked him for an 9 o'clock delivery hour. He tells me that he cannot guarantee me what time of the day he is going to deliver and I wanted to pay $65 they would try to be on time. What a joke of a business how am I supposed to have four guys standing around all day waiting. All other gravel companies can give you a 2 hr delivery window. DONT USE THESE CLOWNS read more

I had 3 yards of really nice organic planting mix delivered this week. Great soil. The driver, Sal, was very friendly and took extra care to make sure all of the dirt was very neatly delivered onto the tarp I provided. Very impressed with knowledge and helpfulness of the staff. Just a homeowner with a project requiring 4 or so tons of gravel/stone. Great advice from the gal at the counter to use a combination of drain rock and decorative gravel to reduce the overall cost. Needed to increase the volume of the gravel a few days before delivery, very accomodating. Received a delivery confirmation call with a 2 hour window the day before the delivery. Received a call from the driver 10 minutes before delivery, within the delivery window. Great company, great service, very pleased and impressed. Highly recommended!!! read more

Great variety of boulders that you can hand-select, as well as a vast inventory of landscaping material (rocks, stepping stones, etc). I had a small issue with my order, and Nick the manager was very diligent and helpful in resolving the matter as quick as possible. I appreciate the accountability and professionalism of the business. Delivery option is great for those who don't have a truck or anyone working on their own without a contractor. Pricing is competitive and bulk discount available for large volume of materials. Highly recommend to check them out. read more

Loaded up on bark, cypress mulch, and sand for a great price. It's like a playpen for substrate shoppers. They had most of what I wanted and more. Been a while since I've been there, because I really loaded up on supplies. read more

This is not for the fairness of prices nor quality materials, which could well be excellent. The yard is tidy and clean. This 2-star review is related to the indifference of the front desk sales staff. They will point at a price list taped to the counter, and, if pressed, give vague estimates of delivery costs. But, essentially, not helpful to the average Joe. read more

My wife and I had a wonderful experience at South Bay Materials. We were doing a D.I.Y. project of a small walkway and needed a few flagstone pieces. The staff was absolutely wonderful with advice and suggestions. They went out of their way to help us. Note, we were NOT a big purchase, total was $45 in three different trips - we got 9 pcs of flagstone and a 70lb bag of rocks. They treated us so nicely. Shout out to staff members: Tyler, Meghan and Nick at the front counter. So if any of you out there have even a very small project, go to South Bay Materials, they have everything from rocks, pavers, stones, mulch, rock, etc.... just be careful of the big trucks coming and going. We are looking for pavers for a big job at the house and went here. I realized when I drove up that I had been here over 20 years ago and bought some beautiful slate that is on our planter in the front yard. This place is amazing and they have a big selection of bulk items like gravel, stones, mulch, sand, etc. They have a large selection of pavers and bricks too. They even sell boulders! I had a few questions about preparing the area for the pavers and got good and cheerful advice. Their prices seem to be about the same as everyone else. You have to be careful here as there are constantly trucks coming in and out and when they dump stuff like gravel the air fills with dust. Lucky I have a bunch of masks in the car! read more

I bought a couple of cubic yards of decorative rock from South Bay Materials. The customer service was excellent - from getting a rice over the phone, completing the purchase and setting a delivery date. They called to confirm delivery the day before, and the driver called when he arrived at the site so that he could confirm where I wanted it placed. The went above and beyond by carefully putting the rock in the parking strip where I requested, rather than the driveway which is the more usual spot (and would have been easier for them). I highly recommend getting your materials from them! read more

If you are a DIY'er like me, this is the place to be. There's ALL sorts of material categories to choose from. Let your imagination run wild. Note that within each category (mulch, stones), there's a myriad of options (small birch mulch, medium birch mulch, larger different type of birch mulch) so there's quite a few options for you to choose from. It's easy to drive around and see what materials you can use for your needs. The place can be intimidating but really, it's not so bad. You can just grab a bag and start shoveling stuff inside it. For larger boulders and concrete material, of course you'll need help. TIP: If you're simply replenishing existing material from your home, bring a bag of it to compare so you know you're buying exactly the right type and size of what you need. read more

This is the single best source for landscaping materials in the South Bay. Nick just called to confirm my latest order being delivered tomorrow.
