I went there because I needed a board cut to a certain length (32") that I would paint to replace an outside board on my house. I've never been to a lumbar yard and the guy helping me was rude and not cordial at all. He didn't give me any choices but sold me a semi finished piece of wood that was 3x the length I needed then had to pay $15 to have it cut down. The full amount I paid was over $50, for a standard size cut board. I thought that was ridiculous!! read more

Worst store ever if you are planning to return anything. There are a bunch of people just pretending to sit and act like they are busy while 10 people are waiting for being helped. I had a horrible experience on return. I bought a box of bolts, about $10 for each and had 10 of them. The guy takes of $15 for the restocking fee, i mean are you kidding me? What world are you living? Wake up.... Their rip off (return) policy is: 15% on any of the items and 25% on lumber...smh I feel the reviews are inflated and avoid these scammers at any cost. He pointed and as I looked on confused, he let out a huge sigh and walked me over. At the register, I saw him chatting it up with his contractors because those folks always come in and know what they are looking for. I recently went to Pine Cone Lumber to rectify a situation with TimberTech. Long story short, the TimberTech's decking we had in our backyard "failed", and they replaced the materials through Pine Cone Lumber. I appreciate that TimberTech stood by their product and reimbursed the lumber by replacing our deck with a newer product. But then it came to getting the materials through Pine Cone. Tracy was the point person for my issue, and she handled everything with an aim to please. She was the person who had to deal with the ordering, delivery and ended up having to deal with TimberTech when some of the wood arrived damaged. She was on top of it, responsive to my needs, and was quick to reposed to my emails and phone calls. They do get busy there, and you may have to wait, but if you have any issues, Tracy is the person to talk to. She knows her business and is willing to go the extra mile for her customers. I have been buying lumber here for 35 years and every time I go there I am even more impressed. This is the highest quality contractor lumber yard in northern California. I have bought everything from pressure treated mud sill to framing studs to LVL beams, clear heart redwood, cedar and plywood and I have never had a single complaint about the quality of the materials. They now carry all of the Milwaukee Electric tools so it is a one-stop shop for me. They do custom millwork, and sell all of the Simpson Strong-Tie hardware and foundation bolts as well as all of the GRK structural screws. Their delivery drivers are amazing at getting their trucks into tight spots even on hills so we don't waste hours carrying lumber from the dropoff point to the job site. As a professional builder I cant imagine going anywhere else for lumber, tools, and supplies. Having quality lumber and tools makes my job so much easier. Their sales staff are incredibly knowledgeable tradespeople who really know what they are doing. I like working with professionals who understand quality and Pine Cone is as professional as it gets. Some quotes from my conversation with the General Manager after asking some basic questions about your materials and pricing: "I am spending way too much time with you and I've got to move on" "I'm not here to give an education" "You don't sound like you know what you want" "We are a contractor shop so you should probably go get some help from a contractor" It was very apparent that the General Manager is no longer engaged in trying to do what is best for the long-term viability of your company. He sounded overloaded and tired of taking care of his responsibilities. At a minimum someone who speaks to a new potential customers this way should not be dealing with customers or in customer service. It was an incredibly disappointing experience dealing with Pinecone Lumber. I feel strongly that it would be in the best interest to share this information via your social and other online presence. I hope this feedback has some benefit to arriving at the ownership of this company to address and protect another small business that probably contributes to their local economy. When I was building my Eagle Scout Project back in 2016, I bought some plywood and scrap pieces here. This store is quite confusing for a first-timer who is not familiar with how to purchase items and where to go in the store for plywood. The quality of wood materials I bought here was very nice, but the low level of customer service provided by some of the staff needs work. I was at the cash register getting ringed up for a piece of scrap wood which I believed to be 12 inches long. The boss who was ringing me up noticed it was in fact not 12 inches, but longer, and actually yelled at me in front of everyone because my mistake. While the prices at Home Depot are less competitive, that's where I go for wood. I'd rather pay a premium for better customer service than to save money at a business where I receive none at all. read more

I needed some wood to replace the cheap fence wood that literally disintegrated and caused the slats to fall out. I did some searches on Yelp and found Pine Cone Lumber in Sunnyvale. I guess they rezoned the area as it is a huge full service store and lumber yard surrounded by a high rise and residential community. When you drive in you sort of get a early 70's feel to it. I went in and was surprised to see a huge retail store of everything lumber or hardware related you could want. You go up to the counter and I talked with a nice old guy and showed him the measurements of lumber I needed. He sort of upsold me on redwood that I would need to rip saw to get the size I needed, but hey at least it would last and be much cheaper than replacing the fence and dealing with the shared cost and pickering with the neighbors! I paid cash and it was like watching a 1950's transaction as he had to go to the lady at a desk to get change. No cash registers! He printed out an invoice sheet and told me to drive to the back and get my wood. This place is huge! A friendly guy came and got my invoice and found my redwood plank and I sweet talked him into giving me a piece of scrap plywood as well. On the way out you have to show your invoice and he checks it against the load in your car. Sort of like going back in time but I got what I needed! read more

Wow... I purchased some items from the store. Before purchasing it, I asked them "What is your return policy?".. They stated if the item is opened, they will not accept it. Fine and clearly understood. I ended up not using some of the items and the items I never used were sealed and never opened. When I went back to return the item, they accepted the return. After processing the return back to my credit card, I noticed there was a 10% shortfall what i got back. And the guy told me there is a 10% restocking fee... Again this was never told to me when I asked the guy when I initially made the purchase. What a joke.. It takes 2 minutes to put the items back to the shelf and they just made $$$ on me for nothing I got back in return. AND THESE ITEMS WERE NEVER OPENED AND SEALED!! Just needed a 2 foot piece of wood cut lengthwise at a 45 degree angle and was told I had two options: 1) We could do it but we are not going to today. 2) $15 minimum no matter what. He just looked at me waiting for me to leave, knowing his ultimatum was designed to get rid of me. He didn't even offer when they could cut the wood if it was not going to be today. It's fine if your business wants to deter small requests like mine...I get it, but he did not have to make me feel like I didn't matter at all. I bought the wood at Lowe's and they honestly told me while they could not do it, Pine Cone Lumber could. When I got to Pine Cone Lumber, they found ways to say how though they could do it, they could not and gave me reasons why I shouldn't. Expected more, got way less. Just be honest and show some empathy. I would not recommend them to the everyday consumer. I ended up getting the job done with my apartment handymen who not only sawed the wood without a table saw but gave me sandpaper. The handymen went above and beyond and even Lowe's found solutions and gave options...can not say the same for Pine Cone Lumber. read more

I came to Pine Cone Lumber several times to purchase Penofin® Ultra Premium Red Label Wood Stain. They are one of the only local places who carries Penofin. Each time I came, everyone was happy and upbeat and I felt at home. Each time I was asked if I needed any help, they even carried the 5-gallon container of stain to my car for me. First time I came, I bought 2 gallons, second time I came I bought another gallon, and the third time I bought 6 more gallons (5 gallons + 1 gallon). I also browsed around in their hardware section, and it seems they have just about everything anyone would ever need for building a deck, gazebo, new fence, or any other project requiring lots of wood. Very soon, I will be going back to Pine Cone Lumber to purchase more Penofin for the new fence and gate I just had installed. I would have no problem recommending Pine Cone Lumber to friends and family. read more

Service is great here. I've called on the phone with questions and get price estimates, and they were patient, informative, and helpful. Same thing when I went to the store in person -- every time they are nice. When I had questions, a guy would just take me to see the different types of wood even if the shop was big and we had to walk a bit. It's a huge in the back, but neatly organized and clean. And for the record, I had a *small* order ( less than $200) but they still were helpful. I've been to stores in south San Jose where the guy said my order was too small for him. Then goes on to explain how he can't stay in business, etc... Never had that issue here). Selection is good if you're looking for remodel / decking / outdoor stuff. If you're looking for hardwoods they probably won't carry it. I hope these guys stick around for a long time. read more

Want a change from the crowded hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowe's? Ever been in a situation where you need that 2x10" fourteen foot redwood joist that's not warped? Well here's the lumber yard for you. This is probably a landmark in Sunnyvale for those that purchase lumber frequently. I haven't had much experience here, but the experiences I have had have been second to none in comparison with the big honchos taking up the home improvement industry. this has been a family owned business for almost 75 years now, and their service and knowledge is incredible. No matter what wood you need, Douglas fir, pine, pressure treated, cedar, redwood, they have it all. If you need special paneling, they got that too (i.e. plywood, sheet rock, peg board, etc.). They also carry a lot of engineered wood products, along with specialized ones as well for decking, metal studs, wooden moldings and sidings, and a lot more. And if that's not all, they have a complete tool room as well. They have a great stock on hand and can cut things to size rather quickly. it really never seems like they don't have anything in stock. If something is out of stock, then they'll get it in within a week. Their staff is extremely friendly and I haven't had a difficult time there at all. you're in you're out, all with a smile. They also can deliver your products promptly and efficiently for those large jobs. I think one knock I've heard about them is that their prices are a bit higher at times than Home Depot and Lowes. I'd like to point out that Pine Cone's wood tends to have the least amount of knots, bows, and warping that I've experienced compared to other locations. For those that do home improvement or construction on their own, you know what a big deal that can be. (they do have a small parking lot though) read more

Bought 8 cedar 4x4s from Pinecone Lumber for $1400. We told them the precise lengths needed. Wood was delivered. We applied water sealer then realized the boards were cut all different lengths. We went back to Pinecone Lumber to see about getting some shims in order to assemble our pergola and the gentleman behind the counter was rude and dismissive. He offered zero assistance and no solutions. Apparently it was my job to do QC on the sloppy delivery we received. I never asked for a refund but just wanted some assistance. A simple "sorry" would have been nice too. Really wanted to help out a small local business competing in a tough environment. F-it. read more

This place gets it! no I don't like Lonely ( Lowes) / Home Alone ( Home Depot ) at all they don't have anyone to ask a question just shelves filled with needless markup items. Now Pine Cone does get it! they have an excellent showroom, they know there product and are very helpful. I recently needed one peace of lumber milled for a fix on my RV I went to Sunnyvale Lumber price: 50 bucks had to buy a whole sheet. Called Lowes they don't do that, same with Home Alone! Well, here it is a couple of years after my first review of Pine Cone Lumber, and my now 52 year old home needed some more cedar siding boards. I took a look at Southern Lumber because I was in the neighborhood and almost fainted from the prices for tapered 5/4 x 10" cedar. I went back to good old PCL the next day, once again found exactly what I was looking for with the same great help I experienced before, and was heading home in record time. My husband and I were excited to find a lumber yard that would offer mill work. My husband called ahead to discuss details and talked to a really nice guy (can't remember his name unfortunately). We have a long board that we needed milled into three sections. They agreed that they offered this service so my husband took the board to them. He was met with about 10 sales guys who were rude and disrespectful. They informed that him they didn't do mill work for wood not purchased there onsite. Summary: Atrocious customer service Long version: Pine Cone seemed to have a good selection of metal connectors in the store, so I thought of them when I needed some hard-to-find Simpson hangers with a total price of around $300. I called and provided the two part numbers I needed. Turns out they required a special order. The salesman would call back with the price. No problem. I gave the salesman my number. Just as I thought our conversation was over, the salesman launched into an interrogation about where I bought my lumber and the location of the job site. When I told him it was in Santa Cruz, he flipped out. I was puzzled. He said "I've never seen your name on a lumber order here" and "this is a waste of my time." With no knowledge of where I am, what I do, what my schedule is, or where my other jobs are, he flat-out declared there was no way I'd come to Sunnyvale to pick up the order and refused to look up the two prices. Click. Stunned, I put down the phone and asked myself "what just happened?" I tried to give Pine Cone $300 of business and all I got in return was an earful of abuse. I have been meaning to check this place out for years and finally did due to the loss of OSH and a deep hatred of Home Depot and to a lesser extent Lowes for their poor quality and nonexistent customer service. Its not particularly set up for a casual do-it-yourself homeowner but once you learn the system its great. I would recommend you know exactly what you want because they are busy and dont have a lot of time to help you decide. I told the guy I havent seen a straight piece of lumber since Southern Lumber closed. Theirs is straight. I was referred to Pine Cone Lumber after I contacted Mac Beath Hardwood Company I was told me PCL would probably carry what I need. They did! I'm pretty handy but consider myself pretty green when it comes to materials and construction. But I did a lot of research and wanted to take a look at PCL's supply of western red cedar posts and try to get any advice that I could on a fence that I designing. I was immediately helped at the front desk by Jeanot who proceeded to walk me to the western red cedar posts that I was curious about. He answered all my questions based on my research of this wood and fence construction and I came away feeling like he pretty much confirmed everything that I had read and was leaning towards. Plus he was very pleasant if not fun to interact with. Laird helped me pick out several beautiful pieces, taking care that there were no blemishes. I ended up purchasing them and put them on hold for my contractor to pick up from will call. A very pleasant experience. I would definitely come back to purchase more supplies should I need it.
