I went to this business, because I need similar screws than I had, just a little shorter. The staff was extremely helpful and were able to identify my screws. While they didn't have any shorter screws in stock (they're extremely hard to find, even on the Internet), they suggested a possible workaround, which worked out well, using some washers. For the tiny amount that I spent on those washers, I feel that I got much, much more than my money's worth in information and suggestions. And all the time the staff was super-friendly, extremely helpful and just a pleasure to interact with. I went to Olander to buy fasteners for the first time the other day. It was one of the best stores I've ever visited. They are super friendly and helpful. Karl, who helped me went way out of his way to make sure I got exactly what I needed. He was patient and knowledgeable. I just can't say enough about what a good experience it was. They have all the things I needed that are impossible to find anywhere else I've looked in Silicon Valley. I have the worst luck buying stuff on eBay sent from China. Nearly everything I've bought has arrived broken or breaks with minimal use. I haven't seemed to learn my lesson, though. Take the case of a bicycle bell that I wanted: the first one arrived cracked, the second one from another seller never came, and the third from yet another seller had a screw that wouldn't screw in. "Screw" you, crappy eBay sellers. Enter Olander Company. Reading the reviews here, I thought if anybody can help me find the right screw (and not make me buy a box of 100), it's Olander. The building was easy to find and parking was ample, but it should be noted that the service area is through an unassuming red door on the side of the building. I wasn't sure, so I first walked through the large door at the front of the building facing the street, and found myself in a sea of office computers (the sales office). A lady kindly told me where to go. The service area is not your typical hardware store. Everything is done over the counter with a service rep. There's some merchandise on display behind the counter, and a large warehouse where more hardware is kept. Both are off limits to customers. Olander seems to specialize in processing large orders, hence the sales office. A nice gal named Annie took a look at my dysfunctional bicycle bell and measured the size of the screw that came with it. I thought I might need a narrower screw, so she went in the back and tried different ones, but they were too loose. Then she noticed that my screw's threading was just barely warped at the end, hard to see but just enough to be problematic. She came back with the same sized screw with a hex head. It screwed in perfectly! She said I could have it at no charge, which was nice since I didn't have cash and there's a $5 minimum for credit card transactions here. But just for good measure, Annie went back into the warehouse and fetched a similar screw with a Phillips head, and let me compare them and decide which one I wanted. I was really impressed at how beyond helpful she was for a cheap part that she didn't even charge me for. Thanks to the great service here, I know I'll come back whether I need just one screw or more parts for a larger job. read more

I was referred here by home depot. The store was well equiped with neat tools, "specialty" fasteners, and kept clean. The young man working there was sedulous and kind. An older man that appeared to have fallen on tough times mentioned how he was spending money he didnt have to make a xmas tree with wires, etc for his grand daughters that they would love. At checkout he took the old mans card gave it back to him and used his own. Didnt mention it to the man and wished him a Merry christmas. He was very helpful and spent a decent chunk of time with myself going through numerous boxes in order to find a screw with long enough threading for my fryer. Normally I loved doing business with them. Until the one time they got our order wrong. We returned the parts and got the correct ones. Then they charge us a restocking fee, and it's like I'm pretty sure we had placed the order correctly, and even if we hadn't, we gave them right back to you. And we order from you pretty consistently. Why do we need to pay this restocking fee. They essentially wouldn't budge, so they lost a customer today. read more

The attention you receive at Olander is second to none. I have come in with all sorts of contraptions that were missing screws, and the guy's behind the counter figured out what would work. Even if you just need to buy one screw, they take all the time necessary to find it for you. They have one of those machines where you take a number and wait for it to be called for your turn for assistance, but I have never seen it in use. I guess I've been lucky and it's never been that crowded where they needed to use it. The entrance is a small door on the right side of their building. Also this is where the parking lot is located. Plenty of parking. They recently celebrated 50 years in business, and have special commemorative shirts for sale. read more

Try finding a end cap bolt M8 1.25x75 mm anywhere in the South Bay and you will realize why this place get 5*. I needed the said bolt for my motorcycle and I went to at least 5 other shops before someone recommended Olander. Walked up to the counter, the young man there double checked what I wanted, went to the back room and appeared with the bolt. I was in and out in 5 minutes with exactly what I needed. It just depends on what time you go in, there's usually only two dudes working the counter, so if the place is busy, you'll be waiting for awhile. Like the other reviewers have already noted, this is THE PLACE to get that hard to find metric screw or torx head fastener that nobody else seems to have. I needed some saddle height adjustment set screws, for a Mustang guitar bridge that were a shorter length but did not know the size. Von went above and beyond and figured out the size set screw and was very meticulous. He was very friendly and helpful with his approach and also solved an issue I was having with the set screws not threading smoothly. If I have any future needs from The Olander Company I would definitely go back to Von for help! read more

The party's over. While my first experience here was stellar, my latest was abysmal. They now have a $5 line item minimum, and $10 purchase total minimum. That means for the three odd torx screws I needed to finish a restoration project, I'd have to cough up $15. No thanks, not doing it. I have been going here for about 8 years and service is sometimes awesome, and sometimes crap, but every time I get what I need and thats the most important thing. I've been an Olander customer since 1980. They are often not the cheapest alternative but they have most things Now and can offer a lot of technical help. Tony, one of their long-time salespeople, is incredibly knowledgeable and fun to work with as well. Their quality is exceptional. I do miss the somewhat looser and much more flexible Olander of Old (a LOT more stock and choices as well as more flexibility in getting an engineering sample), but I guess everyone has to turn more corporate eventually. Hopefully they can keep their sales staff happy because they are Gold. read more

Recently I purchased a new insert and nut for our homemade clock, but the nut was too small. Took the insert we had plus the nut to The Olander Company for help. A clerk measured the dial shaft and tried different sized hex nuts on it. I thought it was a size M3.5, but he said it was closer to a M4. Was really impressed with his skills and appreciated all the work he performed in trying to get the perfect fit. After spending at least 40 minutes on my clockworks, he canceled the charge. Wow! I have been at this business twice already, and on both occasions, there were two sales staff/ front counter people were downright RUDE. The first guy, Eddie, whom helped me on my first trip, was very crabby, grumpy, and seemed unwilling to help. Not the kind of person that would go the extra mile and help you out with a smile. My second trip, it happened again, this time by a guy that went by the name Kai. I showed him a list of what I needed, and very rudely he responded, "No, don't have that one, no no no". When it was time to pay for what I ordered, again, this guy told me rudely to "Go over here", referring to the end of the counter where the credit card reader was located, at the far end of the counter. I gave him my credit card and when he gave it back, he just threw it down in front of me. First of all, I'm a nice guy and in belief, if you treat people nicely, you should be treated in the same utmost respect, especially in customer service. That's what brings your customers back. To those two guys, I say this: Man, if you don't like to help people, then why in the hell are you in that job in the first place. Enough said, if anyone that reads this review doesn't believe me, then just stop by in there one day and you'll see what I "MEAN". Ya, literally speaking, I'm not doing business with those High School dropouts anymore. If you happen to be the Manager of this place, then I suggest you take time to evaluate those guys, because if I were you, I would have fired them long ago. The only thing good about this place is their inventory and they have what you need- the bad thing is getting these goons to go to the back and retrieve it for you. I can train a dog to do that and still the dog would be courteous back to me. The ironic thing is that on the bottom of their sales receipt, it says, "Have a nice day"- go figure read more

Olander has an incredible stock of fasteners: brass, aluminum, black oxide, stainless, titanium, and more. Most head styles are available in a wide range of sizes and finishes. Olander is choosy about what they buy, and they keep their stock sealed up until needed so it looks fresh when it goes out. They have a will-call counter if you need parts the same day, and they have same-day shipping if you don't. My only quibble is with their website: I find it cumbersome and difficult to use. It's a lot like McMaster-Carr's website, but without the precision and keyword intelligence. I find it much simpler to just call into sales and describe the part. Somehow the sales staff are able to whiz through their database in seconds. All in all, I am rarely disappointed with either the product or the service. read more

This place is the best. I have had to come here many a times for bolts for my car and screws for computer stuff. If you need it they pretty much have it when it comes to screws and bolts. They can even cut it to size if the bolt is just a little too long. This place has never failed me yet and I also show up with the oddest sizes of bolts. This place is a little hard to find. Great inventory, but counter help for the most part needs much improvement!!! One day I walk in with 21 items needed and everything went fairly good. 1 month later, go back with 15 item needed ( same kid who helped me last time) and was told it needed to be called in??? My problem was that I took off work to get the needed hardware and was turned away! Went to my truck and called there phone line and the lady who answered told me walk-ins were fine as long as it wasn't like over 50 items. I will only go back is I absolutely have to! read more

Olander is my tech company's go-to for picking up standard or metric fasteners. Our product and engineering team are always working on various projects simultaneously, and are always in need of specific screws, washers, standoffs, etc. Olander always has what we are in need of, and if any unique part is out of stock, the turnaround time is always fast. Von, Eric, and Tai have always been very helpful and very patient when we bring in new products for assembling prototypes. Von and Eric have spent a lot of their time and worked closely with me on a current project, and were very helpful and provided expert suggestions and ideas. This place is the shop to see if you're needing an odd fastener or screw. Plus, they have awesome German tools from Wiha and such--sure they can be slow, but you won't find the screw/bolt anywhere else so just stand in line and wait it out.
