I've shopped here for years and it's a wonderful store with a great selection of high quality tools. Knipex and Wright are my favorite brands, and there is plenty of both here, plus other great manufacturers such as Stiletto, Vessel, and others. They can even order things for you from various catalogs, such as my Wright tool chest that Jessy ordered for me and had delivered to my office. Completely satisfied here! I guess Jessy doesn't need the money, since he barely charges any profit on special orders and it's almost like he enjoys the fact that the customer pays so little, which makes it a great value when placing special orders. I recently took my Stihl string trimmer to Tooland and requested a routine repair. They took the trimmer and I left. Over a week later I called to see if they had an estimate of cost to repair it yet. The employee said they didn't know when they would have an estimate (let alone a repair time). When I went to pick it up he initially balked at returning my $15.00 deposit but relented when I produced a receipt. My opinion: Watch out for these guys. read more

This place is a scam I was scammed out of $8 May not sound like a lot but I'm very upset at how this went down. I bought a small palm rechargeable screw gun for $80. Cool idea but quite pricy. I pulled the trigger because the guy behind the counter said they were selling like hotcakes. Used it Barely drove the tip of the screw into an old dry piece of redwood. I had to basically use the thing like a $5 screwdriver. Why would I pay $80 for a manual screwdriver? Took it back to the same guy. He said there's a 10% restocking fee Joke. I've been coming to this store for the better part of 2 decades now. Whether you're a simple weekend warrior like me or you do it for a living, this is the place to be. If its tool related and you need anything going from a screwdriver to a portable table saw to a new lathe for your shop, maybe a bandsaw, go. If you don't see what you need, ask. I've never stumped anyone there with a question. Give yourself some extra time if you've never been because chances are you'll be there longer than you expected once you start walking around. Yes, I read a few reviews here and all I can say is, don't listen to the guy whining about $89 diagonals. If you know tools and you know quality of tools, there is no better place and prices are definitely reasonable and competitive. I just picked up a Festool cordless 55 saw, i was not expecting to pay those Harbor Freight or HD Ryobi prices for it. Maybe don't buy that rechargeable screwdriver either, expecting to get what a 10v cordless driver gives you. There's a tool for everything and these guys seem to have it all. Bought a Sawstop PCS from Tooland. Jessy had several of them in stock and had it delivered to my house in San Jose for free. Was glad I went with a local business for this purchase If you have the chance to go into the store and check out their selection, it is definitely worth your time. It's definitely a tool-geek's paradise out there. The pricing is generally the MSRP, so you won't find any super amazing deals, but for a lot of brands (Powermatic, Jet, Sawstop, Festool, etc) they don't really go on sale, so that doesn't really matter. Being able to get a feel for the ergonomics and size of a tool (especially if it's a high end tool like a Sawstop table saw or anything Festool), it gives you a peace of mind that ordering blind online doesn't give you. Bought a sawstop from toolland a little more than a year ago. The delivery and all the services were perfect, they even helped us fill out the owner's registration. Recently I had needed to have the saw blade aligned and one of the nuts was too tight for me to loosen, so I requested help from toolland. Jesse has one of his guys come over and fixed it within an hour even though the saw was already out of warranty. This 5 star review is all about Jessy and his team. They're not slick salesmen. Instead, they know their stuff and gave me absolutely fantastic service when I purchased a table saw, jointer and planer. I live in the hills, and it's difficult to get large items delivered. Not only did Jessy and his team deliver my items, but they did so in a manner that could only be called "white glove." One of his men did a test drive to my house in their truck a week before the target delivery date, just to make sure the truck could handle the roads and he knew where to go. On the delivery date itself, they arrived on-time to the minute. They moved the equipment into my garage, placed the table saw on its mobility base, and gave me basic set up help, all the while treating the equipment as if it were their own. And they did it in a professional, courteous, friendly, helpful manner. It's great to do business with people like this. Next time I plan a major tool purchase, they'll be my first call. read more

When it comes to fixing things, I need all the help I can get. Which is why I am an avid tool collector. To make up for my inadequacies in mechanical dexterity and skills, I tend to buy any and all manner of tools that claim to help you fix a problem better. It's the same compulsive/obsessive behavior of someone who can't lose weight. You buy any and all diet gimmicks that claims to lose weight without exercise. In that same vein, I buy uniquely designed tools to compensate for my fear of mechanical inadequacy. On the other hand, the plus side of this neurosis is that I've manage to collect quite a few very unique and unusual hand tools that actually came in handy from time to time - especially on the boat. Space is always limited while working on a boat and you often have to work in a very awkward and contorted positions in cramped quarters (this includes hanging upside down). So if there's a tool that allow you to reach that unreachable part - it's priceless. You deeply appreciate the genius of the guy who designed/made that funky tool. You now understand why Tooland is the Mecca for my mechanical spirituality. read more

Droppd off a saw for repair the week before Thanksgiving. I understood it was before the holidays and they told me it would take 2 weeks - no problems. After three weeks I called, and they said they'd call me back. No one did. A week later I called again, no luck. On week 5 I went to the store to see if the item was ready and maybe they just did not have my phone number or something. Nope, they had not even started working on it. I was told someone would call me - no one did. On week 6 I went back to the store and retrieved my item. They did not even apologize. the guy could not have cared less - maybe my taking the tool out of the repair bay meant less work for him. If you want to experience the pinnacle of half-ass customer service, and simultaneously not get your tools fixed, this is the place to go. Otheriwse, stay far away. read more

I just bought a new table saw from Tooland and these guys really made purchasing it easy. The saw is a cabinet table saw and I don't have a truck or forklift so having it delivered was crucial. After an initial visit and the purchase of a drill bit (wrong size) I won't be going back. I attempted to return the unopened $50 drill bit this am and was told there is a 10% restocking fee. That, in my opinion, is ridiculous. I did not even slide the 3' bit out of it's sleeve let alone remove the plastic coating on the threads - it was brand new and I could have put it back on the shelf in 20 seconds. The staff is very unhelpful and standoffish to say the least. I even asked if they could give me a store credit instead - but no they would not. How does this make any sense? A new customer wants to return an item ( still sealed) that is the wrong size and get a credit to buy something else. Maybe they will become a repeat customer and spread a good word about the business thereby possible getting more business, etc. But they can't do this and would rather have the 10% restocking fee ($5!) profit. This is one of the few Yelp reviews I've written but I strongly suggest you shop somewhere else for your tools. FYI - Home Depot has accepted returns (no restocking fees) on items I purchased more than a year ago during a big remodel. Never had an issue with them - EVER. read more

I give this place 5 stars because they are one of the few tool stores left. They carry metabo who from what I hear makes a lot of tools for hilti but are 2/3 the price. They also are a stihl dealer as well. The might be 5-10% more than online retailers but you can walk try everything out and walk out with your tool. They also repair tools. The repairs aren't cheap but they do it right. If you are always looking for the lowest priced Chinese tool go to harbor freight, however if you want tools that will last and are some of the best on the market this is where you want to go. I saw a negative review about somebody waiting on hold on the phone so they gave this place 1 Star. That's complete BS I've never had a problem with their phone service and if they put you on hold it's because they're helping people IN THE STORE THAT ARE SPENDING MONEY! The staff has phenomenal tool knowledge and can point you in the right direction on making the right decision on what to purchase. Also they are significantly cheaper than whitecap and comparable with Home Dumpot and Blowes pricing. read more

Some months ago, I went to Tooland and got myself a present for my b'day. I got a Blue Steel Japanese chisel set that I have been saving my $$ for. They are fantastic and super quality. When I got home and did a couple of mortises and some trim flushing on a project I am working on. I could not be happier with my set. The chisels are SHARP out of the box. They truly razor sharp. I love the wooden handles and metal ferrule on top; I can tell they are hand made and the forging on the blade is exceptional. Needless to say, these are the best chisels I have. My arsenal contains chisels from the very low end (Irwin, Brothers) to Two-Cherries and various in between. However, my new blue steel Japanese chisels are my pride and joy. They are not cheap but the price from Tooland is better than anything you can find online. I am very happy and I would recommend these Japanese chisels to anyone looking for quality chisels. They will certainly make any woodworker happy. Prices from Tooland are great. Jessey the owner does not advertises on the paper or any other media, so you have to pay him a visit to take advantage of the vast array of tools available and the prices which are lower than most online retailer or local box stores. If the tool you want is not in stock or is something they don't normally stock but is part of the line of the products they carry, they will order it for you at no extra charge. There are only two employees besides the owner so that helps keep prices super low. They are very helpful and Jessey is always fun to talk to. If you leave in the SF peninsula and have not stop by Tooland, you are missing a lot -besides some of your hard earned money. I am a very happy, satisfied customer for over 19 years now and counting. I said, "hey, I wanted to get this but you raised the price". His reply was "oh, I was running out of those and didn't want to order until next month, so I raised it to $120. you can have it for $80." Lots of accessories like rollaround tool bases are cheaper than you can even get via mail order from Grizzly. Only place comparable for selection on the peninsula is CB Tool in San Jose (off N 1st), and they're nowhere near as funny as Jesse. read more

This is a tool shop for Professionals, and folks who know what they are doing. If you don't know the difference between a chop saw and a table saw, maybe this isn't the place for you. Can you get help? Sure. But your mileage will vary. The sales people are great! Friendly and funny. But it's a lean operation. If it's very busy, don't look to have someone take time to educate you. I have been shopping at Tooland for years. They have a great inventory. If they do not have what you need in stock and they sell that brand they will get it for you. Once I wanted a saw that at the time they did not carry. Jessie told me that was the best saw and he said I should buy it direct from the manufacturer. Contractors, shop owners and hobbyists all shop there. I have been in the store when all of the above have been shopping and they all seemed pleased. I am. Jessie and his staff are knowledgeable and friendly. If you are experienced or not they will help. They do operate a large store with minimal help. Be patient and you will get what you want or quickly learn what you should get. I find them far superior than Home Depot or other big box stores. read more

I help my husband with installation across the entire area including the Silicon Valley. I have been to many different tool shops, but, Tooland is most definitely the best.
