After returning from a long trip, I couldn't open the padlock on my suitcase, which contained my personal belongings and medications. I went to Ace Hardware for help, and one of the employees (Jessica or Jennifer?) cut the padlock off with a large pair of bolt cutters in just two minutes. She even refused to accept payment for the service. I was deeply touched because, before going to Ace, I had tried to get the same service at A-A Lock & Alarms in Menlo Park. The employees there asked me to wait for the manager (or owner?) before they could help me. I waited hopefully because I have been using that shop's services for many years. I understood that they were going to charge me $25 to cut the padlock, and although I thought the price was quite high, I agreed because the situation was urgent. You can imagine my shock when the manager bluntly corrected me, saying that the price was not $25, but $250! Needless to say, I felt insulted and left determined never to use their services again.

I came here today…read morestraight from an attempt to shop at a big craft (chain) store across town, and could not have had a colder, less helpful, downright hostile experience from its employees, who seemed to think I was supposed to find everything and anything I was looking for in their store without any assistance in figuring out where it might be. One employee literally said, "I don't know what that is," when I showed him the photo of what I was looking for from their store webpage, and expected me to take that as his answer. The other pointed me to an aisle, and when I said I was looking there and didn't see it just shrugged and went back to what she was doing. None of that will ever happen to you at this store. Cal Ave Hardware not only had what I was looking for, but the owner/manager knew exactly where it was, and took me to it, and then pondered and problem solved about the other item, which they didn't have -- which they were more likely to have in 1/10th the space of the box store, actually problem solving. This is the kind of store that deserves community support. It seems obvious all of the box stores are doomed, because outside of Home Depot, which seems to have had a boost of something lately with the improved morale, Amazon is going to devour them all as they degrade and their loss of marketshare snowballs.
