Awful place to go! Will never go again! Workers are not friendly or eager to help! Called to get an items and the guy said it's available and we have it but 'I do t have time to get them for you to put on hold' , so I had to drive to the store! Parking is a nightmare! The guy i first saw told me to go to the front desk not welling to assist at all! Then the same guy was called to find the item but some one else from the store came and went to fetch! I thought why is this guy did not just help me at the first place? They have some kind of Command in line? The place had few workers but no one really care to assist me! I am trying to purchase an over $100 stuff and came few miles away to get it but they don't seem to care! Then the guy came back and told me they don't have what I want ! The online is wrong! I think he is just stupid and did not find it!!! Completely waste of my time! Not sure what is wrong with Menlo Park stores! I have repeat bad experiences in a month so I guess i will not return to this town to do any purchases! Where is the old fashion service?? It's gone !! I needed some flare fittings that are not commonly stocked at big box stores. Acehardware.com told me that Menlo Park Hardware had six of them in stock today so I put an order in for pick up to make sure I didn't have to dig through a disorganized rack for half an hour to find them when I got there. Less than 20 seconds after my order confirmation email I got an order cancellation email full of broken links to files on someone's hard drive. No explanation, just "Your order has been cancelled. Bye." I contacted customer service to see what the issue was and they gruffly told me that my payment was rejected and that I'd need to call my bank. I called Discover and they said no one had even attempted to charge my card for anything in the last 48 hours. Basically, Ace is full of it. McMaster-Carr overnighted the fittings to me for $13. Same card and everything. The next time you see some local hardware store owner crying on the news about how everyone shops at Amazon now try and remember it's likely because they stopped attempting to provide anything their customers needed a very long time ago. There's dozens of small-time hardware stores in San Rafael, none of them have the lowest prices on anything and all of them are packed with customers because they actually try. read more

They have so much here. I always come here when I'm in a bind - whether it's looking for ant / flea sprays, light bulbs, or needing to replace batteries. Staff here is always very helpful, guy helped me replace my key fob battery in 3 minutes after I asked my husband to do it for several weeks... Huge store located downtown with convenient parking in the back; entrance and exits in the front on Santa Cruz Ave and backside to parking. I came in to replace my car key fob (which would have cost a few hundred dollars), as it had stopped working. They asked me some questions about when the battery was last changed, and then asked if they could check the key fob. I handed it over, they opened it - and found that my friend who helped me change the battery had inserted the battery backwards! They could easily have just taken my money and made the sale, but they chose to help me out, and for that, I wanted to give a 5 star review. Cashier uninformed with regard to processing returns/refunds for items purchased via DoorDash, where they are listed and through which I followed DD's return process with required proof. Would have been ok if they simply told me that they nor anyone else on duty knew the procedure - returns could be handled at any of its other locations- but I was disappointed with what I felt was unnecessary defensiveness, with one other staff even claiming not being able to hear. DD offered to mediate and attempted to reach them, but even with at least four people on staff, no one answered DD's call. DD ultimately compensated me themselves for the inconvenience. If you need to purchase from here, I would recommend buying in person and not through an intermediary delivery service. read more

Meh. The store seems to be a rich man's hobby. Years ago my wife and I were in the store and a guy who identified himself as the owner insisted on showing us snapshots of the expensive remodel he was doing on his house. His attitude was haughty: "I'm no mere hardware store owner." That's the first and last time I saw him, and we've been going there since it opened. Not exactly hands on. Maybe that's why the level of service varies so widely. One day I walked in and asked twice where they stock the DampRid and both times got a look like I'd asked where they stock the ukuleles. "DampRid? What is it, and why would we have it?" They did have it, of course, and eventually I found it. But on another day I got helpful assistance, without asking, in finding the right fastener. Like I say, inconsistent. Also worthy of mention are the two acidic women up front who seem to be manning the registers under protest. All in all, it's the kind of store that makes you question whether shopping local is worth it. I'll try one of the Hassett-owned Aces and see if they're better. read more

I came in to have a battery installed in a key. The clerk was sullen. She took the key apart. She barked at me to get a 2025 battery for her. Then she proceeded to complain to a customer. I am standing there waiting. I finally go to find help. A man came by. I told him. He told another woman to work on the key. I then asked for the key back. She barked at me, but I reclaimed my key and retreated. I will take my business elsewhere. read more

Look It's no secret I love small hardware stores. Poking around, finding that one item you may or may not really need. It always has a treasure hunt aspect to it. Menlo Park Hardware is no exception. Its decently sized but packed with all kind of stuff to check out. Customer service is good as you would expect from a small business. One nice thing about these kind of stores is the knowledgeable staff. When you come in looking for the "thing" that attaches to the dohickey....... They always know what that "thing" is. Wow! What terrible Service! The first person I asked for help told me he knew nothing about plumbing but could help me in the garden center (what garden center? Do you mean the stacks of soil in the parking lot?) and lug a bag to my car. I didn't need that yet he insisted. When I said thank you and politely walked away, he called after me, "Okay, Karen" - Yow. Because I don't need garden soil, I am a Karen? The second woman I spoke with, also said she had no idea (kudos for gender diversity though) and pointed vaguely down an aisle to another woman, who demanded "what you need?" I explained I needed a two headed spigot and she disappeared and then stuck her head around a corner and again demanded "why you not follow?" Um, 'cuz you just took off.... So I followed her. She finally found the spigots and she almost hit my nose pointing to the spigot behind me. And then said "oh sorry" when I jerked back. (so she didn't see me standing there?). then disappeared again. I took my purchase up to the counter where the kid behind the counter told me the electronic contactless machine didn't work and it wasn't his fault. That is a total of four out of four who gave bad service. I don't think it's me. NO THANKS. I love hardware stores and go in them a lot. I do a lot of DiY stuff. but this store does not get my vote or my business. All around rude, lacking in knowledge and basic customer service. read more

This is the kind of hardware store you feel like you can find anything in - there's so much inventory too - especially since they already carry a lot of what's on the Ace website with hardly any of that "ship to store" nonsense some other Ace stores have. I am disabled and use a rollator because I sometimes pass out when standing (postural orthostatic tachycardia). Shopping baskets don't fit on the handle so I put stuff in a bag on the handle. This has never caused an issue any where else. At some point the little old gray short curly haired lady decided I was stealing. And started tailing me around the store, like really uncomfortably close, especially given I'm high risk for covid and employees have just been talking about the employee who's really sick and won't be in soon.. and coughing. None of them are wearing an n95 or even a mask, including this woman. I then went around several times in a circle to make sure I wasn't being paranoid. When I called her out on it she then decided I should put my stuff in a paper bag on the seat of my rollator... where I have to sit if I should pass out, the bad doesn't have handles. Also how is this different from the bag I'm using? So I went to check out and instead of apologizing for harassing me into leaving, she sticks her hand in my Purse!!!! "what about this?!" looking triumphant she's caught me out. Like she actually stuck her hand into my purse and touched my stuff. seriously what the f!*%. It's also ILLEGAL to stick your hand in someone's purse. The somewhat younger woman was also very rude about it. And was like all we have our policies. I said well you are required by law to make reasonable accommodations.. and at that moment was when other lady shoves her hand in my purse. They could have offered to put a basket on the counter for me to put stuff in... that would actually have been super helpful because it's actually awkward to wheel it around in a store that doesn't have the required ADA accessibility for wheelchairs and mobility devices. As in there was not enough space to navigate. So offensive and just left at that point because it was beyond offensive. I have spent lots of money here in the past and I won't again. And also REASONABLE ACCOMODATIONS MUST BE MADE FOR ADA LAWS for disabled people. And the aisles are blocked all over the place so it doesn't even meet the ada requirements for access for disabled people. I have never had this happen here before. But the cashier is always brusk at best and not nice. I can only think they are related to the owner as why else would you let an employee drive away customers. This time I can only think I had a hoodie on...because the store is freezing, as it 47 degrees outside and the doors are open, and it's not lots warmer inside. I have dysautonomia too so my hands and ears were quite icy cold. I was glad to have the extra airflow since they had employees coughing in there and talking about the guy who is out because he's super sick. Or maybe it's because I'm immunodeficienct and have to wear an n95. So having unmasked clerks up in my face breathing near me and following me makes me fear for my life. I actually will likely die if I get covid. and could from a cold or flu as well. So disrespectful and upsetting on just a basic human basis. But they were rude to someone else who came in as well. I guess they are only polite to people they recognize. Not the two dollar keychain that is apparently what set her off when I took my keys out to see if they would fit. Which she felt the need to have me explain-which I did. I lost all my keys. I needed a new keyring that isn't going to fall apart. I had a bag full of stuff already, she could have offered to set it at the counter.. but instead just creepy and in my face tailing me around instead. Here's a tip, shoplifters don't spend an hour and a half browsing and being absorbed in looking at products. Shoplifters are quick, and they are watching the clerks not looking at the products, and taking expensive items. If you own this store and are having loss prevention issues, maybe it's because your clerks are too busy harassing would be customers until they leave without buying anything to notice an actual shoplifter. Set a real store policy, don't harass disabled people. Apply the policy to everyone. And now have wasted two hours of my life because of this and still need to get my supplies elsewhere. I guess amazon wins as I have ME/CFS and have no more energy left. Amazon is cheaper too. read more

I want to go local in my shopping, but with the poor service at Ace, it's hard to do. At least when I get bad service at Home Depot I'm paying less for it. Today, stood in line for full four minutes (I was the only customer) while a clerk put price tags on items right in front of me. I was waiting him out to see if he'd ring me up - nope. He did answer the phone, and then another customer came over and he started to ring them up. WHAT? I said, politely, Excuse me, but I've been waiting. He looks at me and then another employee, who was apparently right there in the isle behind me, runs over and says, I'll ring you. I understand in this economy it is difficult to find good employees who can prioritize things like ringing up a customer before pricing items; and noticing that someone is waiting, and checking to see "who was here first" - but this is also a management issue. TRAIN your staff. For me, even though Ace feels more convenient and local, I will likely head to HD next time I need something b/c there I know the employees care, they're just over-worked. Multiple times, they refused to honor discounts and sale prices advertised for their store on their website. I really like that I can search on the website if they have what I'm looking for so I don't have to go and be disappointed if it's not there. There's a lot of helpful staff and they have good hours. Friday evening I placed an order online understanding "curbside pickup" option was available. When I received the email notification on Saturday morning, I called and provided the store my last name. When I asked about curbside pickup, I encountered silence, then, "we are swarmed." When I asked the same person who was I talking to, he said,"Alright... bye!"-- OK, so you don't want to be identified based on what you told me, right?? My husband then picked up the item for me. When he returned, I asked him how "swarmed" the store was. He told me it was not busy at all. Questions: 1. So, what exactly did you mean when you told me you were "swarmed"? 2. Is curbside pickup available, selectively available or just non-existent?? If it is the latter, please stop advertising that it is and then telling us that it is NOT after we paid you--because we are in a pandemic and certain customers do really CARE about that option! This is literally the BEST Ace Hardware store I've ever been to! Not only are they well stocked, but everyone there is super knowledgeable and helpful. I came in with a damaged powerwashing hose and wanted to get a replacement and didn't think they'd have what I needed, but they had a few different hoses in stock. The connectors were different than what I had, so several people who work there wanted to help me figure it out. One of them (didn't get his name, but super smart and helpful), figured out that a piece needed to be removed from my hose and cleaned up in order to connect the new hose. He took a wrench and had a really hard time removing it because it was rusted, but after multiple attempts and lots of effort, he did it! Amazing service at this particular store! read more

I called inquiring about a specific outdoor furniture set that is on sale. The gentleman who first answered the phone said he will talk to management about selling me the floor model, and will call me back. I received a call from Management informing me they usually can not sell the floor model but they will do it this one time. But he will have to charge me a $100 assemble fee. I asked why would he have to charge me this fee, if they already assembled the furniture to be the floor model and he told me he needed to because he will lose money due to this sale. But how will he lose money if he isn't supposed to sell this furniture set in the first place? I accepted the assemble fee price, and asked if I could receive a discount considering it is the floor model. You never know how much abuse this set went through previously. He said no, this set is stored in the back, as if that makes a difference if people sit in the chairs. I didn't appreciate having management charge me more for a floor model, and he was losing his patience with me and getting very short. I suggested if I would like it delivered, he could charge $50 more and "make it work". So I called the Castro Valley ace hardware, and she instructed me they charge $30 to assemble and $50 to deliver. I will take my service to this ace hardware (even though it is farther for me to drive to) because of the way I was treated over the phone. read more

This store is cramped, but crammed with useful stuff. Unfortunately, customer service is highly variable, you are often ignored, and sometimes they act as if ringing up your items is doing you a big favor. They also aren't listed on the coupons I receive regularly from Ace. Location is great and there's ample free parking in back, with a back entrance through their next-door gardening department. Watch out for poorly-placed and stacked pottery along the aisle. I accidentally brushed up against one that fell to the floor and broke; I paid for it, but was a little disappointed that the store didn't accept responsibility for their poorly-placed display. read more

I love how this store in particular feels like a tiny hardware store that's the only one in the area located in a small town somewhere. But in reality, it's just your neighborhood Ace Hardware. But the staff here makes you feel like you're a part of the community. Very cool! Came here a couple times to pick up some home stuff we needed.
