So aside from your big box lumber stores, or independent ones, finding interesting or exotic wood can be at best difficult. However, Global Wood Source is a perfect stop for DIY types (or professionls) looking for say a live edge slab to make a table, burl, tone wood, pen blanks etc. Large selection of stuff some of which I had to look up to see what it even was combined with a super friendly and helpful staff makes this place an easy 5 stars. I had a vision in my mind but didn't know where to begin. I took a look online and found the closest place that had exotic hardwood and to my surprise and delight they had more than I possibly could have imagined. On top of that, the fact that I only needed about one linear foot from maybe 3, 4, or 5 different types of hardwoods I was afraid that might be challenging. The gentleman whose name I forgot that was working told me to not even think twice about it. He said to just pick what I wanted tell him how much and he'd cut it which is exactly what he did. After multiple emails (including pictures and measurements of all logs) as well as multiple phone calls, I was told they don't have room for my wood and it wouldn't fit their saw anyways! Was written off as a "miscommunication, sorry bud". I had to cancel log transportation after being told by Russ "just let us know when it's coming". He was on the phone and the dog was growling at me.The other guy was on a saw so,... there i waited for 30 minutes. walked around and loved the wood, but i had questions. While not as large as Aurora Hardwoods, they have rare and one of a kind wood items for your projects. I got a lathe for my birthday and needed some wood to play around with. I wanted a nice variety to get comfortable with and Global Wood Source had quite the selection. I didn't catch the name of the guy who helped me but I believe his name is Eric ... he was super helpful in giving me some ideas of what to start with and helping me pick out some amazing pieces. It's been a lot of fun learning how to turn wood and so far - the Bocote and Olivewood are my favorite. Can't wait to stock up on some more! read more

Holy carp. If you're looking for fancy wood, this is the place. Some of the wood slabs here are simply amazing. If you're just a hobby woodworker this place is a terrific resource. I'll dig through the scrap bin every time I come here. There are some amazing gems in that bin. If you go upstairs, there's an impressive amount of project lumber for pens, turning, and whatever else. Since it's all picked and sorted it's more expensive than digging through the scrap bin. But if you're looking for a specific wood that's the place to explore. The place is a little hidden but once you find it, you'll probably come back. read more

I went to Global Wood Source for the first time today and my experience was so good I'm writing a Yelp review for the first time ever. As a somewhat novice woodworker, I came in looking for anything unusual and outside of the norm that one would find at more traditional wood shops. I was quickly overwhelmed; the variety and depth of inventory available is incredible. Eric (Erik?) helped me out and gave possibly the best customer experience I've had anywhere. He showed me the different kinds of woods they had, took the time to understand my project and steered me clear of the wrong choices and towards the right ones, explaining the "why's" the entire time. He helped me get a few different pieces suitable for someone of my skill level, and then even gave me direction on how best to move forward once I was underway at home. I was looking mostly for smaller pieces, so I can't attest to the large slabs (which were stunning), but the cost was very approachable, especially if the wood is pulled from scraps pile (don't be fooled, these "scraps" came off of some extremely nice wood, they just aren't as big). Many stores have a standard variety to choose from (oak, pine, birch, etc.) but just the varieties of maple available here blows any other store out of the water, not to mention the dozens of other exotic woods available. I left with more than I expected at a wonderful price, and left more knowledgeable too, thanks to Eric and the time he took with me explaining everything I needed to know. 10/10, very much look forward to coming back here again. Beautiful selection of woods in all shapes and sizes, and from all over the world! Can't find any of these options at your local home depot or lowe's, that's for sure! The staff is exceedingly helpful in answering your questions if you're not entirely sure what to go for. I wanted a piece of wood planed down to about 3/4", and they did this for us free of charge. Also, there's a sweet black Labrador that roams the grounds and she's an absolute delight. read more

If you blink you will miss it. Tucked back in an industrial park snuggled up to the San Jose airport is Global Wood Source. Walk on in and say hi! And then continue on back to the warehouse in the back. What a nice assortment of exotic hardwoods that they have! They have everything from slabs to pen blanks. They also have piles of wood burls, either whole, slabbed, or cut into turning blanks. Some of your harder to find exotics are here in large piles, and the purpleheart was very bright purple, you almost needed shades. The guys working there were all very friendly and know the wood well. I picked up a couple of pieces from the cut-off bins that have samples of a little of everything. I will be back next time my travels bring me to San Jose. read more

I visited Global Wood source in Campbell a couple of weeks ago, as I needed a fairly large piece of poplar for some drawers I was planning to build. Eric Jacobson helped me out by allowing me to select the piece I wanted. He then cut the piece to size on the spot, and then planed the board to the perfect 5/8" thickness I needed. Great service during my first visit, that's for sure. The price for the material was very fair, and there was no additional charge for the millwork that Eric performed. A week or so later, on a Saturday afternoon, while building the drawers, I realized that I needed one additional very short piece of material to complete my project. I headed over to Global Wood Source, and once again, Eric took great care of me. He cut the short piece that I needed, milled it for me at no charge, and had me out the door in less than 10 minutes. The charge this time was $5.00. Incredible service, and an outstanding inventory of specialty woods. I went here in hopes of finding an alternative hardwood dealer after my local dealer stopped stocking exotics. While global wood source advertises a wide array of exotics and domestics, the actual selection is clearly the remnants of what once may have been a well stocked warehouse. Sadly, I could not find anyone to assist, I had no indication of where I would purchase said wood, and so I left empty handed. I highly recommend jackel enterprises in watsonville as an alternative. I have been here twice, and have had a pleasent experience each time. This place is very friendly to hobbiest like me, that are buying just a board or two. They let me poke around the warehouse for an hour looking at all the wood. No one was upset when I was taking boards from the rack out to have a better look at them - just make sure to be respectful and not make a mess or damage any of the boards. They would ask me if I needed help from time to time, but mostly left me alone. They have a very good selection of exotic hardwoods at reasonable prices (all wood is expensive these days). They have a lot of claro walnut, some figured maple, reclaimed douglas fir, and redwood. Not many other domestics, though one of the employees told me they could get anything I needed. There are lots of turning blocks and interesting slabs. All their boards are rough (unsurfaced). They also carry very beautiful figured guitar blanks. No sheet goods. Very friendly and low keyed.
