Loro (original location on South Lamar) has been a staple in my dining-and-drinking-with-friends rotation since they opened back in 2018. They have a massive covered patio, an awesome shareable Tex-Asian fusion menu with something for everyone, and most important of all, they can usually handle a super large party with staggered arrival & departure times, no problemo. Downsides: parking can be difficult, peak hours a bit chaotic, and the counter ordering system can be confusing for the inexperienced. Still worth it? Heck yes! My last visit won me as a forever fan when Loro was able to save my out-of-town visitors from their naively impossible Saturday night itinerary. Friends from Europe and Ohio were in town with their teens who wanted to experience several "peak Texas" moments from their bucket lists. Dinner for 11 at 6:30p with no reservation, someplace near Broken Spoke, getting out in time for 8p two steppin lessons and a Dale Watson show. I feared there was *no* way. We roll up to Loro, seeing that the place is packed. Just in case, I hopped out of the car, waited in line at the host stand, explained our dilemma, and the kind hostess said she'd see what they could do. With a quoted 45 minute wait, we parked & hung out in the overflow chairs by the driveway to await our fate. To our relief, the buzzer rang in 15 minutes and we were all seated together inside. The friends from out of town were thrilled! The Swedes & Buckeyes could not get over how delicious all of the Franklin-ish brisket options were, and the moms in our group loved all of the lighter dishes and craft brews & cocktails. Seeing all of those happy faces around the table: priceless. We made it out just in time to squeeze in a round of Cotton-Eyed Joe before Dale started his set at the Spoke, and Loro's legend now spans the globe. read more

Lunch on South Lamar: The Fall of a Favorite We went for lunch today on South Lamar -- casual plan, mild expectations. For drinks, a Sapporo beer and a sparkling water of an unknown brand that, to my dismay, listed potassium chloride among its ingredients. Not exactly the refreshing start one hopes for. At the counter, uncertain about what to order, I asked the man behind if their meat was organic. His answer: "Orga... what? Well, I'm not sure. Since our food comes from Sysco, it probably has some organic stuff depending on the suppliers." That told me everything I needed to know -- but it was too late to turn back. We ordered the Oak-Smoked Salmon Rice Bowl ($15.75) and the Oak-Smoked Salmon "Meats" version ($19.75), both served in white plastic bowls, accompanied by luminescent green seaweed salad, sweet cucumber, and a gooey mix of ponzu and yuzu marmalade. The combinations sounded promising yet the flavors were flat, unmistakably industrial. The salmon tasted like it had been raised on pellets and compromise. What once made Loro so remarkable -- that fresh, unexpected dialogue between Texas smoke and Asian brightness -- has now faded under the weight of mass supply. We love to go to this place during happy hour. They have happy hour drink specials and food specials that are really good. They have plenty of seating but the lines to order get kind of long so we usually sit at the bar. Bartenders are friendly and very attentive. Parking can be a bit of a problem on really busy days so you may have to walk, but it's worth it. Their happy hour is earlier than most places so be sure and check the times before you go. I really enjoyed our lunch here! We stopped on a weekday right before noon, and the parking lot was already packed! The restaurant inside is really nice and big with natural lighting. We grabbed an open seat to look over the menus since we needed a few minutes for our first time. One thing I've noticed seems to be a trend in Austin is that you order at the bar almost everywhere and have to self serve water, utensils, to go boxes, etc. I went up and placed our order at the bar. We ordered the boozy slushie flight to share, but they were out of the rum one we were most excited for. I substituted it for the mango one, and it was great too. I had the smoked salmon rice bowl: coconut-scented rice, seasonal pickles, thai herbs, and my fiance had the oak smoked pulled pork sandwich: cashew-sesame slaw, smoked pepper bbq sauce. The problem is it gets so busy you don't want to be inside which is the more comfortable place to be. Ordering is not a great experience. I feel bad for the bar tenders. They are pulling 3x duty. Whatever they are being paid, you should triple it. You'll most likely stand in line for a while to put in an order so better order drinks and all at once. Otherwise, having to go back again and again just sucks. I went with a large group and we ordered just about everything on the menu. I gotta say that the food was good but not great. The boozy slushees are great, especially the mango and killer colada! Those two were definitely our favorite and I absolutely love the smoked salmon dip. The brisket in both the tostada dish and lettuce bowl was so good. Wonton chips were just a little bit greasy but other than that the food and drinks were phenomenal. There's a weird way to order by checking in coming in and you can sit anywhere and they bring the food and drinks out to you in a very casual environment. The slushy drinks were amazing and refreshing. When our food was brought out, there was no utensils, napkins or anything. So you have to get those yourself. It's kinda like a trailer food truck but more places to sit. They were very quick to pickup our bowls and not really servers but food deliveries. Some of the fans weren't on when we were there and it was too hot a night to sit there comfortably for too long and inside was packed. So a long wait to get an inside table. Loro is a solid place for an Austin-ey group experience. They have lots of shareable plates and lots of options for omnivorous, gluten-free and vegetarian people. There's room outside and inside, though be warned that getting a table inside during weekends can take a while as they do get quite busy. Highlights of our most recent visit were the wonton chips and dip which consists of craquelin-like, inflated chips and two tasty dips, as well as their famous grilled edamame which is probably the tastiest edamame dish I've ever had. Right sauce, right amount of char, excellent appetizer. The potatoes are also excellent. Drinks were good and pricing was fair, especially for Austin. The only disappointing item on the menu that we had was the "creme brulee" which isn't really a creme brulee at all. It's more like a pudding with a little soft crust, topped with peanuts. It's not bad, but it's not what it claims to be. I'm French Canadian, so believe me, I know what crème brûlée is supposed to taste like. Je connais mes desserts. This isn't it. But it's still good, just needs to be renamed. Service is good in the sense that you order at the counter and then they serve your table once, and bus the tables towards the end. Still they expect / ask for a 18-25% tip in advance while paying, which is weird. I gave it but I don't think there's proper waiting of tables at Loro that requires such an ask. It's superfluous. Lots of businesses do it nowadays but it doesn't make it right. Anyway, I won't bore you with a rant about paying waiters a living wage and how antiquated tip culture is...
