    Hawaiian treats
    Katherine A.

The local Longs Drugs was bought by CVS a couple of years ago and is the predominate drug store option in Hawaii. The good news is that the stores still carry many "made in Hawaii" items that I have become dependent on. Local salt, sodas, mochi mix, tropical pancake mix, nuts, musubi and sushi supplies, local coffees and even local vodka are still on the shelves. They also carry all the traditional health care merchandise and have a pharmacy. I've used the pharmacy once, at this location and had no issues. This location is open 24/7 The service is a mixed bag. Sometimes a clerk will help you find something and other times, they say, not my department. Prices are reasonable, especially sale prices. There is a covered parking lot that occasionally I can snag a parking space. Parking is tight.

The local place to get your necessities... Soon as the Sunday ads come out we scan and head right for our favorite local Long's and this Kahala Mall location really isn't mine but is one if I'm ever in the area which I was today since I was here for an errand. This mall location is a bit smaller than the usual making it less to find the usual items found at other locations but does offer all the usual services like their pharmacy and photo. Though realizing they have a sale item I was looking for personally didn't ask for help but had the hardest time finding the item to only give up is quite frustrating as if it's on sale it should be prominently displayed which they don't often do so and since this isn't my usual store I don't know it as well. Having two multiple entrance does make it easy though when it's close to the mall's closing time they do close the entrance which get annoying lol but is a great convenience for me a few times when I needed prescription badly or looking for that item it has saved me greatly and will always appreciate the convenience it gives. Thank you!

(Shopped 08/23/24 FR @ 6:00pm & 08/28/24 WE @ 6:00pm): I "travel" a long way to shop at this drug store! I visited Longs Drugs' Kahala location specifically to buy my favorite shampoo that I've used for decades. Amazon charged an arm and a leg to ship to the Hawaiian Islands, and this particular item wasn't readily available at all convenience or grocery stores. Thankfully, I did an online search and this location was the closest to me that said they had it in stock (there was a Longs Drugs closer to me but they didn't stock the item). In case you didn't know, Longs Drugs was the same company back on the mainland known as CVS Pharmacy, so you were able to use your "Bucks" with both brands which was pretty cool. Was this a successful possibly longshot visit for the drug I used for my hair!? PURCHASE Pantene Pro-V Volume & Body 2 in 1 Shampoo + Conditioner 17.9floz Bottle $8.99, & Lays Potato Chips Limited Ed. Honey Butter, Tzatziki, And Cuban Sandwich 2.62oz Bags $3.19 x3 ($19.43): The body and volume this shampoo provided my fine hair along with the light candy-like fragrance, I will stick with this product until they finally discontinue it (which I hoped they never will)! As for the funky potato chips, if you really knew me, then these impulse buys were a no-brainer. I loved salty snacks, potato chips, and whenever Lays put out these unique flavors, I had to try them out. I travel a lot, and have thoroughly enjoyed the various flavors found around the world. In order of my preference, Tzatziki (Greece), Cuban Sandwich (Cuba), and Honey Butter (Korea) was where my palate led me. Find these if you can! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=NffqGUb55Gs_S6MVWh96uA Hawaiian Host Honey Milk Chocolate Macadamias 4oz Bag $4.99, Hawaiian Host Kona Coffee Milk Chocolate Macadamias 4oz Bag $4.99, Hawaiian Host Strawberries & Cream White Chocolate Macadamias 4oz Bag $4.99 x2, Family Maid Safety Pins Assorted Sizes 135ct $2.39, Stouffer's Macaroni & Cheese 12oz $4.99 ($28.63): My sister asked to bring back some edible souvenirs, so Hawaiian Host macadamia nut treats were always a hit! The safety pins were used for newly-purchased curtain ties, and the frozen dinner was to be my last meal before I left the following morning (it was surprisingly good and hearty!). https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=rtawgEX3Lw1hMWNDgT0T_Q SERVICE Generally speaking, I roamed the aisles and found my intended purchases easily enough. The young women I dealt with at the checkout counter were friendly and got me through quickly - mahalo! PARKING (FREE) Located at the Kahala Mall, there was plenty of parking - 'nuff said! ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE Your basic convenience/drug store layout with multiple uniformed aisles, promotional end-caps, table displays, and a fleet of cashiers ready to take your money. The usual promotional posters hung on the walls. This was a smaller place than I expected, and reminded me more of a glorified mini-mart. Plenty of natural lighting came in through the large tinted glass doors and windows while soul-sucking fluorescent electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were no TVs while I believed music played in the background. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=io4NSX-P6Dd8beXBY6tbuQ ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Kahala's Longs Drugs' location was very convenient, served my immediate purposes, and I would certainly visit them again if needed. Everything was straightforward, they carried the necessities, had a pharmacy, a frozen food section (no fresh produce), and most familiar name brands. The prices were comparable (sign up for their ticker-tape of coupons and discounts), parking was easy, and the service was more than adequate (I couldn't recall if they had self-checkout). I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $48.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

This location is always busy with so many people and the lines for the pharmacy may or may not be long. The long time staff here are helpful and friendly. They seem to really care about the store which is a plus. The sales are good and even better with a coupon. The prices are pretty outrageous without the coupon. I really like how longs still caters to the locals with our favorite snacks, supplies and foods. It's nice to see the shelves lined with kaki mochi, lihing powder, haupia mix, ramen and shrimp chips for snacking. I really like how the do it yourself aisle includes Asian fix it items like small drainers, clothes pins, musubi molds. Longs is very unique to the island in the products they sale. The pharmacy lines are painful and it's not the fault of the employees. Omg..the customers picking up medicine asks the most inane questions taking up the counter time while the lines build. The technicians are patient. I do think they need to staff pharmacy better. Definitely will return here again and again!

Longs Drugs in Kahala is a very busy location. Shared parking at the mall. I got lucky today and got a parking space right outside of Longs. Went to get my Covid booster. The staff was very friendly and efficient. Checking in was breeze. The pharmacist came promptly at our reserved time. Friendly, fast, and efficient. Enjoy.

There are so many reasons why I love coming to longs but the biggest one is that they have tons of food and beauty products at discounted prices, even obscure items that most places rarely ever put on sale- this is probably why I come here pretty much every day to shop. Also, the staff is always super friendly and helpful which makes me feel appreciated and welcome, keep up the great work everyone!

She is so personable and a joy to speak with. She offers inexpensive breakfast bentos featuring white or fried rice, a fried egg and pieces of Portuguese sausage, bacon or frankfurter. The meat varies. It used to sell for $3 but now costs $4.50 (I think). It's still a deal and the containers are great! (We use them to hold leftovers.) During lunch she sets up an array of entrees ... Honey Walnut shrimp, Beef with Vegetables, Meat Jun, Spicy Chicken, Choi Sum, Vegetable Pancake ... the selection varies by day and she offers two or three starches. A two-choice plate ($9.75) comes with a choice of white rice, fried rice or noodles. You have to go early; she can run out of food by 12:30pm. I usually choose one chicken dish and a vegetable with fried rice or noodles. A co-worker always gets the Honey-Walnut shrimp. It's hard to find a better deal in a plate lunch in downtown Honolulu. Her drinks are "the deal", $1.25, $1.50 and $1.75, for large, larger and humongous. Add in the personable service and you have a winner! The prices of their freshly sliced fruit are very reasonable and the portions are generous. The plastic containers are packed to the brim. My opinion, lets start with spam, perfectly cooked, with secret sauce, love the umami taste while I took my first bite, and the rice is hot & moist, not watery & not premium rice but it is still good, along with the nori. I loved everything about this musubi. Great spam to rice ratio. The only thing that I need is some of my chili spices! Mom & Pop is super friendly, I remember asking how many musubi's they sell a day and owner mentioned they make and sell over 100 a day. I usually park quick at the loading zone of Kukui Plaza, let the security know and walk over real quick to load up on my musubi(s). Don't forget cash only! Every time I walk inside, there's a strong, unpleasant odor that smells like sewage or fecal matter. It's consistent enough that it doesn't feel like a one-off issue--it's something you notice immediately when you enter the store. At times it seems stronger in certain areas, which makes me wonder if it's coming from plumbing, floor drains, or possibly even outside air getting pulled in. What's frustrating is that this location used to feel like one of the better-run stores on the island. Now, the overall impression is very different. Even if the shelves are stocked and the staff is doing their job, the environment itself really affects the experience of shopping there. What stands out is the comparison with nearby stores like Safeway, which don't seem to have the same issue, even though they serve the same general area. That contrast makes the problem at this location even more noticeable. I hope management takes a serious look at it, because this doesn't feel like a minor cleanliness issue--it feels like an infrastructure or maintenance problem that's been left unresolved for too long. It's a shame, because the store has a lot of potential and used to be a go-to spot.
