Well today, the grandkids were in the car coming back with us. And we had to stop to give them an A&W experience. Well, the carhops aren't there anymore or the glass mugs but we did go through drive-through. They were pretty busy on Saturday at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. We waited in the drive-through before being greeted by an extremely friendly employee. He was very polite, took our order did suggestive selling everything that an employer would want their employee to do. It was a little bit of a wait to get to the window, but it's understandable when the first thing out of their mouth is what can I make fresh for you today. When we got to the window, our primary order was root beer floats. The same order taker that took our money gave us our order. He was still very polite and made sure we had everything we needed. The first thing I noted is they use soft serve ice cream now with the root beer floats and some of you reading. This are probably saying come on grandpa hand scooped ice cream went out years ago. I'm happy to report the root beer floats were very good even with the soft serve ice cream. The grandkids love them. We love them and we will be stopping more often as we drive down. If you're ever coming from big Bear, we're going to big Bear and you get into Mentone I think it is, I highly recommend just stopping to A&W grab yourself something to eat and one of the famous root beer floats.

Overall, I would say come for the salad bar and try out the salads if that is what you like to do. The variety isn't as large as Soup plantation, but what they have is almost on par or better in flavors than what Soup Plantation offered when it came to salads. I even like their pasta salads better than Soup Plantation. The things they don't do as well on is soup since they only have 3. Their best, in my opinion, is the menudo. It's not bad for the value of the food and you can get your fix if you don't know how to make menudo. Their cheesy bread is unhealthily delicious and their desserts are pretty good considering what you pay for everything. I honestly rather come to here than Soup N Fresh (to avoid the line) and Golden Corral (quality vs cost) if I'm looking for something a bit more healthy when eating out. I think the rest like the ribs and steak is somewhat mediocre and not as much to write home about. They are good for what they are, but it's one of those things where I wouldn't miss it, crave it, or look for it unless already in front of me.

We had an 11:15 reservation and were not seated until 12:40. Throughout the wait, we were repeatedly told there were no tables available. What made the situation even more frustrating was the complete lack of communication from management. No one explained that brunch service would be ending, and we actually had to get up and ask ourselves whether brunch was still available. That was when we were finally told they had stopped serving it. At that point, it honestly made us question what the purpose of having a reservation was in the first place. A delay of over an hour on one of the busiest brunch holidays of the year should have either been communicated transparently or accommodated appropriately by honoring brunch for delayed reservation parties. The response from management was also disappointing. Rather than taking accountability or offering any real solution, the manager blamed staffing and "corporate." If this truly comes down to corporate policies or staffing decisions, then Mimi's as a company seriously needs to reevaluate how these holidays are managed. Longtime customers should not be left waiting over an hour with no communication, only to lose access to the very menu they made reservations for. Sadly, experiences like this are probably part of why so many longtime customers feel the overall quality and organization of the company has declined over the years. We've always loved coming here and this location has been part of our Mother's Day tradition, which makes this experience even more disappointing.

It was Friday night at 9:30 p.m. when we ran into an overflowing dining room with no seats available inside at the Highland location, and the ordering line out the door. Next I drove to the Redlands location only to run into a filled parking lot and another dining room overflowing with primarily high-school-aged youths. On our third attempt parking was available at this location, and seats inside, but about 50 teenagers were swirling about in front off the ordering area, with no discernible back of the line. No worries! While Diane snared an available booth, two of the youths urged me to bypass them and go to the front of the line. Then people ahead of me parted like the Red Sea. I guess there can be some advantage to having white hair and moving along hunched over a walker! As I learned, at least some of the youths had just come from watching a football game won by Colton High School against Rim of the World High School situated on the mountaintop nearby. There were high school football games all over the Inland Empire this night, and numerous spectators were hungry for a burger, fries, and shake afterward. For Diane and me, this was simply our outing for dinner! As to the food we ordered, it was as fresh and good as ever--a Double Double Cheeseburger for Diane, and a Hamburger with Raw Onion and Cheeseburger with Grilled Onions for me, plus three orders of French Fries to split. We will surely be back for more--but not likely on another Friday night.
