My least favorite restaurant experience over my 3 week vacation this summer. Quite pretentious for very average food. They also don't feel the need to let you know cilantro is an ingredient. When I asked about why it wasn't mentioned in the dish description I was told, ' the menu clearly states we sometimes use ingredients in addition to those described in the menu'. There are plenty of other options in and around this delightful town. I'd look elsewhere. read more

New location for old favorite. Lovely new space. They are still finding their sea legs. They seem a bit overwhelmed and exhausted. We called to make reservations but they are too busy to answer. We walked over around lunch time and made reservations for 5:15 (only available). Everything was up to par but our server detracted from the experience as she was far from friendly. Minimalistic service style. She was efficient enough but we wished we had the other server who was very nice. Food just doesn't taste the same when it's served cold. I mean the service. read more

If you want amazing Asian in a loud, confined and rudely-served atmosphere, late on reservations, with pressure to eat and leave, this is the place for you. We arrived for our 7 pm reservation (booked almost a week ahead) at 6:50 as we were told tables and times will be given away if you do not arrive on time (despite Long Grain calling to confirm reservations). 7:15, we were greeted with, "Name on reservation?" A lot of commotion shuffling and 20 minutes later, arranging of a four top table with three menus. Great. Looks like we're next. Very good. We're "hangry" at this point but excited. We've been to Long Grain many times before they moved and expanded. 7:45, "Are you xxx?" No, we repeat our reservation name. Three- five people, who came in about 30-50 minutes after us, and clearly did not have 7 pm reservations also waiting. More time spent splitting up what we thought was our table into a two top for us three adults. Ordinarily, I wouldn't care. popular restaurant, Tuesday night in cold, winter Maine but this made me livid...Finally seated around 7:50. I'm sitting out on the outside edge and being jostled by those leaving the bar. Asked if our reserved table was given away to split and seat more who have come after us or maybe even without reservation (it's almost 8 now). I didn't get, "sorry for your wait, very busy tonight...here is water or a wine menu, we can re-seat you when a more comfortable table opens up" or some customer-friendly comment. I got "These people have been waiting too and have reservations, any more questions about how we run our business?" No. Thanks waitress for schooling me. Lost whole bunch of customers (my kids and friends go here after skiing at Snow Bowl. They've noted the bad service and attitude too) your food, although great, isn't so good that I would wait long, be shoved into a postage stamp table where I cant hear, can't relax and enjoy. After that we got minimal attention, bad service. No excuse for bad service. Former emergency room nurse and never treated patients with disrespect no matter how busy we are or or how angry they are. Ordered as little as possible and left. We won't be back. Many exceptional Asian restaurants in Portland that run kind and respectful businesses and not a factory. Maybe get take-out? The waitstaff don't deserve your tip. read more

The food was amazing. It was gone before a picture was taken. We pick it up curbside and it was warm and oh so tasty.

First time there yesterday. I was very sad this day having to say goodbye to my dog of 12 years. I found the food very comforting, and the nut brown ale was really good. It was a really nice meal, that made me feel a little better read more

I never would've expected it, but there is delicious Thai food to be found in Camden, ME. This is a great place to stop if you are driving to and from Portland to Acadia. The coconut soup was absolutely incredible - the flavors and ingredients just felt so fresh. On the other hand, we ordered the pad kee mao which was just okay. It was tasty but quite salty, so I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. I feel they use very good ingredients to help the dishes taste more fresh and less oily. Definitely a nice place though, and I recommend making reservations. read more

How very disappointingto dine tonight at long grain in their new location. I have been a fan for years and will not return any time soon. The service was horrible. The wait staff and owner were indifferent. We had to wait 15 minutes to even to be acknowledged. The waitress took an order for 5 people without writing anything down and no surprise we received the wrong appetizers. After that 2 of 5 entrees came out with the rest following 15 minutes later. The pork special came out cold with chunks of pork so thick and tough it was inedible. I would not return for ANY of the dishes. How very disappointing. read more

One of the better meals we've had in a while. Amazing Pad Thai, steamed dumplings, and other dishes.

Our B & B host recommended it and we are thinking how can a Thai place be that amazing. After visited... this is really the best Thai food we have ever had. House noodles Pao Thai is phenomenal. Soup, salad and chicken wing are also above average. read more

The Thai Food was amazing!!!..just short of some of the Best we have ever had. It is the ambience that ruined it for us!! One would think that a little hole in the wall, would be warm, cozy and inviting like the other mom and pop places. Not So! Very Pretentious Dining Experience!...they know they are good and act that way. We made a reservation and arrived early...they were very quick to shout across the restaurant that we were early and would have to wait. Once seated..the waitress says "Well you've had plenty of time to look over the menu!!" and "You guys aren't from around here are you!?!" Note to self..get take out next time! read more

My boyfriend and I love coming here. The service is always impeccable and the food is always amazing. We come here quite often and every time it's perfect and when it's not they always make it right. Definitely would suggest going here! Fantastic place! read more

Between the lousy service and mediocre food I cannot see why people rave about this place. I'm surprised there aren't more negative reviews. Went for lunch this past Saturday and were seated right away. 10 minutes later the one server stopped by to say she would be with us shortly. This was after no fewer than 12 trips sauntering up and down the length of the restaurant for Lord-knows-what reason since someone else delivered half the food orders. Our order was taken shortly thereafter but, about 10 minutes after that, the server told us she'd forgotten to enter our order and she wanted to reconfirm what we wanted. We restated our order and she assured us she'd ask them to cook our food right away. Over she came with one, not two, iced teas. Almost 20 minutes after she finally entered our order one entree arrived - what, no appetizer? When the second entree arrived it was not the spicy Thai basil minced chicken I had ordered. Instead it was Pad Ke Mao that was supposed to be spicy (wasn't), had mushrooms (which I don't eat) and organic greens (that were so raw the stalk couldn't be bitten through). The dish was blander than bland and barely an appetizer portion. Oh and it was $3 more than the dish I'd ordered - which I wouldn't have minded, except it a) wasn't what I had wanted, b) had no flavor and c) had barely an ounce of chicken in it. Much ado about nothing I'd say. One of the worst hours of my life in recent memory. read more

We had a delicious meal here the day after Christmas! The location was cozy, inviting and unique. We shared dumplings and Brussels to start and both were filling, tasty and well presented! We also started with some beers recommended by our waitress that paired well with the meal. For our entrees, all 5 of us ordered pad Thai or curries and each one was delicious! The portions were great as well. I got a warming beef dish that was served with rice and it was so satisfying especially on a cold night. We left too full for dessert, but satisfied with a wonderful meal! read more

I tend to think of Thai food as a high-floor, low-ceiling cuisine; rarely phenomenal but usually good enough to satisfy the appetite. One reason for this, I've discovered, is that it's all too easy these days for restaurants to purchase pre-made sauces, noodles, and other ingredients from a central distributor, rather than make these items in-house. Result: the Pad Thai (to use one example) at your neighborhood restaurant tastes almost exactly the same as the Pad Thai downtown, or the Pad Thai you had by your uncle's place in Indianapolis, or the Pad Thai you had while vacationing in Myrtle Beach. Why? Because they are all using the same generic "chili sauce" as their base when they toss your noodles. Sadly, individual family pad thai recipes, which can feature all kinds of interesting spins that incorporate tamarind paste, peanut butter, or even ketchup, have given way to the bland uniformity that results from the convenience of wholesale distributors. Hence the surprise to find in Camden, Maine, out of all places, an extraordinary little operation that builds Thai classics using fresh ingredients, homemade noodles and made-from-scratch sauces. Walk past the restaurant after dark and peek in the window at the bustling dining room and cozy bar. You'll immediately want to be part of this hip, intimate scene, where slender servers and tattooed cooks deliver artfully-piled chive cakes and noodle dishes to an educated and relaxed-looking crowd of vacationers. It's a two-waiter show, so be patient; better yet, make a reservation. The menu is small but well-focused. Portions are smaller for some of the dishes, but packed with flavor. The pad see ew features delightfully large and chewy homemade rice noodles, which are seared almost to caramelization in a piping hot wok, seasoned with sweet soy, and tossed with kale for a nice touch. The ramen sits in a spicy kimchi broth and is packed with almost-al-dente homemade egg noodles, which don't disappoint. As for the appetizers, the shumai, chive cakes and chicken wings have a street-style zing to them, bursting with the fresh flavors of ginger, herbs, red chilis and fish sauce. You'll be licking your fingers and lips as you polish off your plates, wishing you were retired and lived next door to this little joint. If you're a craft beer fan, check out the Japanese microbrews. They will cost you a pretty penny at 8 bucks a bottle, but are worth the indulgence. Apparently Japanese beer has become much more than Sapporo and Asahi. I had no clue. Nor did I think I'd discover this in a vacation town Thai restaurant. read more

Now that I am the Duke of Long Grain and have been dining here for two years, I feel it is time to review Long Grain. First, let me say this to all the reviewers who whine about not getting seated immediately even if they have a reservation. Relax people you are on vacation. So what if you have to wait a few minutes. It's a small place, in a small town, with people taking their time. This is a mom and pop restaurant serving local grown food that is freshly made. The food here is, in a word, spectacular. Not because it is wildly creative or uniquely plated, but because it is fresh, plentiful and flavorful. The plates are creative looking and have they feel that they are made for you and only for you. The noodles, whether cruncy or as part of a broth have flavor and texture. The curry hits your nose and your tastebuds with full authority. The vegetable dishes look and taste like they came out of the garden that day (which they probably did). They variety of mushrooms are amazing, even if you don't like mushrooms. Step away from the lobster roll and chowder/fried shrimp world and indulge in local produce and mussels, fish etc. You won't be disappointed. read more

This is hands down the most delightful surprise. Happened upon this small restaurant as I was walking out of the Rite Aid next door; there was no obvious signage from the outside, but the bay window provided a view of the restaurant packed with eager diners, coupled with the irresistible familiar aroma of Southeast Asian culinary artistry. Walked in to find out they only took reservations. Made a reservation for the following evening. They called me twice today to confirm I was indeed coming, presumably because they have to turn so many people away. Getting to the point-- everything we ordered was exquisite. They have really refined Thai "fusion" without losing any of the rich authenticity of the flavors. It was "fusion" insofar as they integrated locally sourced produce and meats, which only served to elevate and better showcase the flavors of the dishes. Exceptional Thai cuisine. I can't wait to come back to Maine (of all places) to have a beyond-compare Thai dinner here. Another plus is that the food came out quickly. A+++!!! read more

I'm considering moving to Camden, just so I can be near this restaurant. Absolutely fantastic. Spring rolls: perfection. The most overrated "pan Asian" food I've had. Bland, chewy. Edible but not memorable or enjoyable. Completely disorganized service. You'll only enjoy the food here if you are unfamiliar with Thai food and haven't lived outside the US (where it is rare to find decent SE Asian food). read more

My favorite Thai place, Long Grain has great wild rice and pah see ew. Their dumplings are making me hungry as I write, and their rice cakes are out of this world. By rice cakes I don't mean the Quaker kind. These were soft and warm and more wonderful than you can imagine. I'm not really sure what was in them or how to describe them better but literally they were fabulous. read more

What can I say? We talk about this all year long ... We rave about the spectacular blend of flavors, the perfect level of spice, service is friendly & timed just right, and the quaint atmosphere. This is, hands down, the best Thai food we've ever had. And we recommend it all the time :). read more

Long Grain is inventive, creative, and down right some of the best Thai food I have ever had. My Mum and I came here on our trip BACK to Camden (it was closed during the International Film Fest weekend), and I'm so glad that we did. We stopped in for lunch on Saturday, busy, but we got a table. We started with dumplings, and then shared the Ginger Chicken and Pad Thai. You might think "oh, there are so many unique Thai/Asian fusion dishes on the menu...Pad Thai you can get anywhere..." NO. YOU CANNOT GET THIS PAD THAI ANYWHERE. It was AMAZING! The noodles were perfect, the sauce was so tasty, fresh veggies and herbs, and the little flavor crunchies surrounding the egg and chicken were to die for. The Ginger chicken was excellent as well, the sauce was SO delicious and the chicken was accompanied by some wild mushrooms for added "meat" appeal. Lions mane mushrooms, I THINK. So, so good. Can Camden get any cooler? I will say that I read below that some customers had experienced sub-par service, and I can kind of attest to that. Our server was just kind of aloof...never brought us any water, until we asked, was just kind of "short" and not overly friendly...but, oh well. It would not deter me from the delicious food. And, the gentleman who delivered our food from the kitchen was VERY friendly and offered to get us whatever we needed, so it all evens out in my book. I would still call Long Grain a "5-star restaurant" any day of the week! read more

Great little hole in the wall restaurant. The reviews are all spot in - amazing food with a very diverse drinks menu (wine and beer only). It was good, just not as good as I was hoping it would be. I stopped in for a lunch by myself and say at the small bar area. The ladies serving me where nice enough, but seemed a little weary after what was, I'm sure a long 4th of July weekend. On their suggestion, I ordered the fresh spring rolls and pork belly with kimchi. The spring rolls were fresh, but the vermicelli filling was over-cooked and that made the texture off. The pork belly kimchi only tasted of kimchi with no other flavored to balance it. The jasmine ice tea was light and refreshing. Not sure that I would come back. read more

Had a late lunch there over the Labor Day weekend. Indistinct storefront, name of restaurant on a piece of paper taped to the front door. A hidden JEWEL! We ordered the spring rolls first, they were superb! The rice wrapper was gelatinous (softly fresh)! I have never found a Thai restaurant in the Boston area that serves such a fresh spring roll! The pork dumplings were so tasty! One could tell they were hand-made. We ordered the pad thai with chicken. The rice noodles had been stir- fried in a pan first and then the other components were added on top. Stir-frying the noodles made for a memorable (flavorable) difference! read more

We had one of our favorite meals at Long Grain in Camden. It is an absolute surprise to find such delightful Thai food in Camden, Maine. We had two appetizers, three entrees, one dessert, two beers and a Thai iced tea for only $75. It was unbelievable. Here's the breakdown: Apps- spring rolls and steamed dumplings - both delicious, fresh and flavorful. Entrees- Spicy night market soup was to die for. My husband proclaimed that he would bathe in the broth. That might be too much, but it really was magnificent. Sweet, sour, spicy, homemade noodles, yummm. It was definitely the best thing we ate the whole night. Spicy ground chicken w/ poached egg was good but paled in comparison to the former. That said, it was still probably better than the best dish at your average Thai restaurant. The sweet soy noodles w/ kale and tofu was also fantastic. The kale was a bit crispy around the edges and the homemade noodles had a lovely texture and great flavor. Dessert- Coconut milk bruleed flan-type dish on black sticky rice. Dessert typically is not my thing at Thai restaurants but this dish definitely changed my mind. Are you sensing a theme? This restaurant is awesome. Service was prompt and friendly. The atomsphere of this place was very relaxed and not at all pretentious considering the recent New York Times review that compared it to some of the best Thai restaurants in the country. That said, reservations are a must. We called one day in advance and could only get a reservation at 4:30 on a Wednesday. It's worth your while, however, to fight people off for a spot at the bar just to eat the delicious night market soup or anything else the chef has to offer. We definitely will. read more

Went here with my mother and grandmother. My mother and I are big Asian food fans with Thai being our favorite. We were so excited about this place, based off the reviews. Food was... Meh. None of us were impressed with our meals. Not only did we not finish them, but we didn't bring home the leftovers. We also got an appetizer that was so bland we didn't finish it. So lots of food waste, which I'm not a fan of. Needless to say, we won't be back. They did seem to have enough locals at the bar to keep them going, so I don't think they'll be missing us. read more

We were having an enjoyable dinner starting with rice cakes and dumplings when a woman in her thirties with long brown hair delivered our homemade wide noodles main course. We asked her to please tell us what the spice was in the sauce for dumplings and she said,"it's a secret!" give me a break! - information is to be shared - what's the fun otherwise. Then we asked her if she could possibly turn down the AC which was blowing right on us (it was 66 degrees outside and I had popsicle toes) - her response? "We keep it at full blast." We will never return - it was those home made wide noodles we came for on recommendation and she ruined the experience. That said, everyone one else was a delight - the food on final analysis was good but average and the possibity of really good was spoiled by one person who should not be working in a service industry - beware chef and owner. read more

The Thai beef salad is fantastic and the beef noodle soup is great too! I'm glad it continues in the same small funky space.

We went to Long Grain for a late lunch and could not have been happier. It was cold and snowing, so the only thing on my mind was something hot, preferably something soupy. We got an order of the steamed dumplings, which were quite good and piping hot. Next up, the spicy/sweet noodle soup with ground pork and the lad nar -- noodles, pork belly, greens and a thick broth (a dinner special that they made us for lunch). We could not decide which was better. Each was the best version of that dish that we had ever had. We kept passing the plates between each other and diving in to each bowl. The pork belly was quite fatty but that prob made the broth that much better. The place itself is very comfortable and the staff was very friendly.
