Beautiful search for the perfect Christmas tree in the mountains. I haven't sought out a Christmas tree for years. I saw the reviews and decided to come to Lobe Star. It was such a nice experience going up there and getting advice (and a saw) from Donna. The roads are a bit slow steep and the passing lane is a bit tight. Still, it was worth it. The dirt and gravel road in the farm the was a little too slick due to the thick fog after our recent rain. So I had to engage the 4X4 option in the truck, then it wasn't a problem. The fog made it all the more enchanting and magnificent. As I was checking out I treated myself to some fresh honey Donna was selling for her neighbor. I love that neighborliness. I had a really good day getting the tree with my family. But you need to be ready for an adventure with this place. You'll need to either do your research or go with someone who has gone before. No frills here. The road to arrive is very windy and at some points there is barely enough room for two cars to pass. We went the day after thanksgiving so it was understandably pretty busy. But once you get into the farm, there is plenty of property to spread out and find the tree of your dreams. The views are gorgeous. You get a hand saw at the entrance. You can pick any tree you see so long as you leave 2-4 branches below. The price is flat, no matter how big or small your tree is. But at $68 (additional $3 for netting) this is actually cheaper than almost any road side tree lot you'll find. Also the tree is fresh so I'm hoping it lasts longer than ones in a lot. Cons: 1) You have to tie the tree to your car to get it to the netting. So you're tying it twice. That was a hassle. 2) They do the netting for an extra fee ($3) but they don't do anything else. No help with tying. No twine. Nothing. So do your research ahead of time and come with your blanket and rope. 3) Even though they offer very little, the actual interaction with staff was sub par. We waited too long for the person to net our tree. And the woman collecting money was sitting with a tip jar. Even though they did nothing to get a tip I am always guilted by those jars. After paying with exact change, I asked for her to break a $5 bill so I could give a couple dollars. She said "I'd rather not." So I didn't give them a tip. I get that they're a "no frills place" but common courtesy isn't a frill. I'm 50/50 on coming back here. It was overall a good experience but i have a feeling we'd get a better experience somewhere else. read more

Lone Star has a great variety of trees, which is wonderful since we have a high cathedral ceiling, so we tend to get around a 13 foot tree every year. Donna and her staff are a pleasure to work with. We've even gotten our truck stuck sideways in the farm, and they totally came to our rescue. read more

i bought a groupon to this place: $22 for any size douglas fir (not including tax). i was very glad that i bought this groupon because lone star tree farm is actually a great place to buy a cut.it.yourself christmas tree. it's a relatively "no frills" kind of place. you just pull up, get a saw, drive down through the tree farm, park on the side of the road (don't block other cars), cut down your tree, tie it to your roof, pay, and drive off. it's really simple. granted, they don't have a santa claus here, no hot apple cider, no christmas craft fair... but i think they do sell honey on the side. they are "cash only..." but i think they also accept checks. they sell two kinds of trees here: douglas fir and white fir. i was a little scared that i would chop down the wrong kind, but i figured it out. the lady at the front was very helpful. it's fun to drive around the christmas tree farm since it's an unpaved dirt road. i suppose it's not a bad idea to bring your awd/4wd. my subaru forester had no problems. read more

It's the most wonderful time of the year! I love getting a Christmas tree! My family went to the Lone Star Tree Farm since Timberline Christmas Tree Farm closed last year. According to the website, it was recommended to visit Lone Star or Skyline Tree Farm. Lone Star Tree Farm focuses on Douglas Fir and White Fir trees. It was a very interesting experience getting our tree. The lot is HUGE and the trees are spread out. There were trees of all sizes: fat, tall, skinny, sparse, etc. We drove around the entire lot to find the "Best Tree Area." We found our tree which was fat and tall. Cutting was a breeze since the saw wasn't dull. The only bad part was getting the tree to our car. The lot has a lot of steep hills, so it is challenge going down the hill with a giant tree. I would have preferred a tree farm with mostly flat land or a slight incline. Just be careful since the ground was muddy. Parking can be a challenge since you don't want to hog up the road. In addition, we saw signs that said that we couldn't park between the signs. It seems like we can't really park anywhere. The final cost of our tree: $46 + tax = $50. If you want netting for the tree it is $1. Cash only. Happy Holidays! Directions: Highway 17 to Bear Creek Rd exit. Easy to find this place. We found the tree selection to be great, with multiple options to select from. Our kids had a great time navigating between trees, looking for the perfect one. We ended up leaving with an 11ft tree that was perfectly shaped. What could make the experience better? You have to haul your Christmas tree all the way to the main entrance if you want netting. If you are in a passenger car, it is more than a little challenging to keep a tree secure on your car from the bottom of the tree farm up to the pay area. It would have been way better to offer netting service down at the main parking lot. read more

This is worth the drive and even the drive from Hwy 17 off Black Mtn. road is not long, just windy and narrow but through spectacular scenery. The people are friendly here and offer beautiful wreaths, too, and also great views. The trees are tall and healthy in all sizes, and the way they are grown in rows with paths makes it a fun adventure. I'm going to return next year as the quality of their trees is far superior to what I've been getting up on Skyline from Hwy. 9 side. Bring hot cocoa and enjoy the excursion! read more

This place is worth the drive. It's huge with literally thousands of trees to choose from. You can drive all over dirt roads to get closer to the tree you pick so you don't have to carry it very far either. If you have a 4x4 or AWD you may even need to use it because this place is THAT cool. The views of the valley can be spectacular too. The trees are the same price regardless of size so if you have a tall ceiling and you're trying to get the biggest tree you can, this is THE place to go. The ONLY reason I don't give them 5 stars is because I'm hyper allergic to poison oak and I saw some around the base of some trees. read more

Came across this lovely destination through Groupon. It was an amazing deal for perfect, fresh, aromatic Christmas trees. I enjoyed walking around their grounds. The location boasts amazing views. I do have to warn that the drive is not for the claustrophobic, anxious or nervous drivers. I had a tough time going up the street which narrows, gets steep and windy. After asking for silence from the passengers, it was ok, going down hill isn't so bad. Be careful with the turns as it narrows!...people drive too fast and dont respect driving close to the shoulders to allow for room. If you're adventurous..GO! Views are breathtaking. read more

They even let us bring our dog who had a great time running around while we hiked through the place with our 4 year old to find our perfect tree.
