Was so excited to cut my own tree down this past Christmas! I researched a bunch of different tree farms in the Santa Cruz Mountains and it seemed that they all had a similar price range within $5-$10 of each other. I opted for Summit since I knew exactly where it was and that they'd have a pretty large selection. It was a set price of $80 per tree (2025), no matter if you got a 4 ft tree or 12 ft tree. They had a ton of trees to choose from, we parked shortly after the road turned and when we were leaving we realized just how how expansive the property was and how much more there was to explore. Just in the area we were in you could find trees of all sizes, small, tall, plump, and on the thinner side (this was the hardest to find). There's a small snack shack here but you can also bring your own food and tailgate before or after the hunt. We spent about 20 minutes saying this is the tree while then finding another one a few minutes later. They provided a saw and we brought our own measuring tape to make sure it would fit in our designated space. Once you get your tree you drive back to the front to pay, we ended up putting the tree inside my car, so I'm not sure if they'll help you secure it to the roof before you go, but you are responsible for doing it yourself as you make your journey back to the front. They sold stands at the front, I believe they were $20. When I got a real tree growing up, it was always from a lot so they would secure the stand and put the tree through a shaker for you. That wasn't the case here, so we did find a lot of small spiders after getting it home, and we also had our tree fall over after decorating it because we didn't get the straightest cut on the bottom and the trunk was a little oddly shaped for the stand. read more

We have been going to Summit Christmas Tree Farm for 5 years now. We only became aware of them because a photographer we were working with did a photo shoot on their grounds. Entering the farm is free and it is beautiful with varied topography and rolling hills so you don't feel like you're in a crowd of people. They often have folks selling hot cocoa and snacks, while some people make a whole event of coming here. In addition to trees, they also sell wreaths, I believe, though we have never purchased one. What we love about Summit is that the trees all cost the same amount no matter what. It's a flat fee. Granted that fee has slowly increased over the past five years (I believe it went from 60 to 80 over that time span), but the pop-up shops in town and the other Christmas Tree farms are just as expensive if not more so depending on how big of a tree you get. (We looked at other Christmas Tree Farms in the Bay Area and found that many of them were charging by the foot, just like the ones in parking lots in town do. We usually get an 9-12 foot tree, so it is way better for us to get our tree from Summit than elsewhere. We have brought trees home the weekend after thanksgiving and they've stayed green and fresh until after New Years! And the best thing is that a new tree will grow after you cut yours down. You cut the tree (they provide the saw and twine) and you carry it and secure it to your vehicle. You park anywhere along the road inside the farm and explore to find a tree that suits your needs. I recommend bringing a measuring tape so you know it will fit in your space. Pay with cash or credit at the exit. An important note -- going to Summit means you will be walking around outdoors with uneven ground and there is poison oak. Do your best to cover your arms and legs and wash well with a brown/detergent soap when you return home to avoid getting poison oak. If you haven't get gotten it, you're lucky and, believe me, you will want to keep it that way! Well behaved dogs are allowed on leash. Also, driving around the farm involves dirt roads with big potholes and uneven surfaces. We have taken an AWD vehicle but do not consider that necessary - just don't take a vehicle with a low clearance. read more

We have now purchased our christmas tree here for the past two years and always have a great experience. The staff is really friendly and they provide a saw, twine and you may purchase netting! They even have some food stands w snacks, tamales and drinks. We had such a fun time. Trees are $80 and netting is $5! See you next Christmas :)! read more

Chopping your own tree down is such a fun experience! You get to drive around 80 acres and pick your own tree for $80, what a steal. I do recommend giving yourself at least an hour and half to browse around because it is a large area to explore. They do provide a hack saw and netting service but we were in a rush so no netting for us. read more

We were there and cut our tree on 11/25 the day after Thanksgiving, now our tree is turning brown all over and today is only 12/6 We're going to have to go buy another tree now because there's no way this is making it to Christmas. Came here last week to get my Christmas tree. It was very busy but that was probably because I went during a busy hour, loved how you could go out into the forest and chop down a tree. Got a single tree and costed only 80 dollars, that's a nice price considering that trees are expensive nowadays. They give you a saw and twine so you don't really need to bring a rope or axe. It was relatively good, the people there are really nice and genuinely good people. I recommend for anybody, definitely coming next year! read more

Our entire family of 6 thoroughly enjoys the complete experience of hunting for, cutting, carrying, and purchasing a tree here. Our son always scouts out the tallest tree he can find, and then we all appreciate how great the provided saws are. TIMBER.... and I'm so grateful to reasonably purchase a 15 foot tree. I must say, I was hesitant to review and say just how friendly the staff are, just how convenient it is to pull to the side of the road, and head out on a pretty trail, and that the tree selection is gorgeous, and you won't feel like you're paying way too much. I was hesitant because this place has become a lot more popular recently. :( When we first started coming it wasn't swarming with large groups, card tables, stupid people with lattes, charcuterie boards, and annoying voices. Because I'm a helpful yelper I shall provide what I love and some tips: What I love: Pretty location, Easy parking, Quality Saw and twine are provided, great variety, reasonable prices, professional and friendly staff. Wear boots, and wear layers. Bring a tape measure to be sure your tree will fit in your house! Pets are permitted, yay, Fido can come too. Ps please pick up after Fido. They don't have the red tape, so bring your own if your tree will be hanging off the end of your vehicle Bring extra cash, they sell cute shirts in a lovely shade of green (unfortunately my teenager took mine) Sometimes scouts or other organizations have pop up snack bars and food/drink sales there. Go early to avoid people If you can go on a rainy day, it's even more fun, because nobody else is there! Never mind- I might be turning into a grinch. Grab lunch at Summit Market after you're done. If you have not gone up to chop your Christmas tree down, I recommend trying it! I have gone to Summit Christmas Tree Farm the past 2 years and for $25 ( with coupon ) under $50 normally, you can cut down ANY size tree for your home! Once you arrive you are greeted by a friendly staff holding a saw. Do not worry, its for your to saw your tree down! The area to drive around and look for a tree is large, I recommend doing a lap first so you can see where you want to park. You do not want to be like me on my first time and park at the first open spot and then you end up performing a long hike, about 1/2 mile away and cut down the perfect tree, then end up having to carry/drag it the whole way back to your car which was also up hill. :( Park in the middle somewhere. It is fun to run around and look at trees, even to play hide and seek and jump and scare little kids. hehe. Just do not do it to adults, their reaction might be to swipe the saw at you! lol. Our family had a pretty terrible experience here this year. There was poison oak and sticker bushes all over the tree farm, not kid or dog friendly whatsoever. Dog poop along the trails that a family member stepped in, since you can't see the ground you're walking on with all of the poison oak. All of the trees were half dead and small- we walked for an hour before giving up. We talked to other families that were also having a hard time finding a tree that wasn't dead. Being the opening day of the season, there should've been a better selection. They didn't bother filling in any of the holes on the gravel road, our SUV nearly got stuck several times. We followed one sign pointing to the exit, but after that there were two separate forks in the road with no signs showing which way the exit was. No wonder all of the trees are the same price- all of the trees are in terrible condition. read more

Tip: drive around once before picking your tree. The farm is really big and there are lots of good trees hidden in the back (where most do not venture). The only thing I'd suggest for them is to get better saws. This place had the worst saw of the 3 farms. Whereas it'd take about 5 minutes to chop a tree previously, it took more like 10-15 minutes here because the blades were dull. Some other tree farms will also give you a wagon/cart to wheel your tree to your car. Here, we basically dragged the tree to the car. However, the customer service was AWESOME. We always try to go right after thanksgiving so we have the best pick of the lot. We love cutting down our own tree while we sip on homemade cider. Decided this year to tromp through the woods Griswald-style and chop down this year's Christmas tree. A Living Social deal sealed it and the whole family was off to the Summit Tree farm in Los Gatos. Los Gatos must be a big place because its actually 1/2 way to Santa Cruz. Beautiful sunny December Saturday made for a great day for tree picking. Drove right into their lot and the place is huge! They had you a saw and off you go. Lots of cars parked on the side while people pick their trees. Even though there were a lot f cars,t he place is so big we didnt really run into that many people while picking our tree. Off into "forest" we went. Great trees everywhere - all sizes. We couldnt decide as the next one looked better than the last. We finally settled on a 12' Douglas Fir, cut it down and hauled it to the van. We were near the exit, so one of the workers helped us get it on top and tie it down. Really nice and helpful. Great selection, nice people, good help, what else could you want? Overall, a real nice family adventure with no Griswald mishaps. read more

We go cut down our Christmas tree every year at the Summit tree farm. It's just down the road from us. There are many tree farms in our neighborhood, but the Summit tree farm has the best service, views and trees. The other great thing is the snack shack that the Boy Scouts run it supports the look troop pack 509 and it is always fun to get served hot chocolate and donuts and o the tasty treats. We got a 15 footer this year and the Boy Scouts ex ven hoisted the tree on my car! If you haven't checked it out, I highly recommend next year packing a picnic with a nice bottle of wine your loved ones tok get you tree next year. read more

I love that we can pick our own tree, and cutting it down is not as hard as it seems. The farm is huge which makes it harder to choose! I suggest you drive around the farm first so you can get a glimpse of the trees and then park by the area of your choice. We always end up wondering off and by the time we cut one down one of us has to walk back and drive the truck closer so we don't have to carry the tree all the way back. It's pretty clear that this place, probably like many others, has been affected by the severe drought and high temperatures of the summer. Even though we're only a few days into the season, it was more difficult to find good trees as compared to past years. Many of the trees have yellowed needles; for several others the foliage wasn't as thick. We spent close to two hours walking around a large area, and eventually we found a tree to our satisfaction. We started driving around the loop and parked our car on the side of the road. Grabbed the saw and camera and we were off to go find our perfect tree! The tree lot was huge and the selection was awesome. There were small trees and huge trees! I believe the cost was $50 for any size tree, but im sure if you picked a small tree they would give a discount. Once we had found our perfect tree we tied it to the car and drove to the exit. on the way to the exit I saw a snack shack that was run by a local boy scout troop -super cute! Awesome tree farm! I purchased a livingsocial deal ($25 for $50) which worked out perfectly because each tree you cut down at the farm is normally ~$50. I was a little skeptical at first because i was afraid all the good trees would be taken by mid-December and saw that there were quite a few vouchers sold via livingsocial but boy was i wrong, there are SOO many great trees to choose from and the hardest part was definitely choosing the one you want. From start to finish, it literally took 5 minutes to chop down our tree (we ended up bringing home a gorgeous 8 foot tree for our livingroom) The saw they provided was very sharp and in great condition. In addition, we brought our own rope, tied down the tree ourselves and just drove out of the farm. We only saw one worker there who provided us the saw and collected the voucher at the exit. Took a little while to initially find the farm because there are dozens of farm signs and arrows once you exit but just stick to your directions and you should be golden (we did not see any sign for Summit's Farm off the freeway). They have a large property so definitely take your time and drive around the perimeter before taking your pick. read more

Went Saturday, and according to work hours on Yelp, the tree farm was open before Thanksgiving. Well they were not! They open officially the day after Thanksgiving. Fortunately, a friendly gal that worked for the tree farm opened the lot for 2 other families and mine (drove from Berkeley and Oakland). Perfect! Had the entire place to us to roam the lovely green trees. The gal did not have much time to wait for us, so we gave ourselves about 30 min to choose our tree. Easy, right? Nope. We kept changing our minds on which tree to choose. Finally ended up with a tree that fit our home. The tree lot is HUGE! The best looking tree's I have seen. The smaller 6ft (estimate size) had smaller trunk's, so be aware if you have a watering base at home. She provided us with twine and a saw. We are big city people and have chosen a tree from lots. This tree farm takes the "city" out of you. HAVE FUN! Cannot wait to go again next year. read more

I have always wanted to go out and cut my own Christmas tree. It's simple really. The drive up to Summit is really nice. Be sure to pack a picnic before you go. There are some picnic tables you can have lunch inside the 100 acre tree farm. They give you a handsaw so you don't need to bring your own. The best part is you can pick ANY tree you want. Size does not matter!!! Every tree is $60. We had a great time here and highly recommend this experience. I think we started a new tradition for our family. They don't wrap your tree for you or carry it out for or strap it onto your car - but we were prepared to do that ourselves. Would've loved this place, except that there wasn't any parking. In addition, being that it was extremely busy, there were no employees directing traffic or directing anything for that matter. It was a guessing game...do I park here? Where do I get a saw? Absolutely ridiculous, this place was a zoo. Our new favorite spot to cut down a Christmas tree. Acres and acres of great looking trees and all for a flat rate of 60 dollars cash. You can bring your dog on a leash and picnic. Amazing views and really nice people. Not sure how long the tree will last considering the drought but it's all about the experience. Also, the way that they ask you to cut down the trees makes it sustainable. Another tree grows off the old cut or whorl. Much better than HMB! read more

Thanks to a LivingSocial deal, we got our tree for $25 flat. How awesome is that?!! Finding this Christmass tree farm was pretty easy. Getting in on a Saturday before noon was a little tricky with all the other families doing the same thing. It wasn't too bad, but expect a short wait as other cars maneuver around the parked cars. We thought we were towards the back of the farm when we parked to find our tree. Just keep going! There are even more trees in the back. We found a great one and plan to come back next year and explore the other sections of the farm. If you see a tree, take it. We(more me than him) made the mistake of wanting to continue looking. We lost the first tree we saw but picked out one just as good, if not better. :) Bring some gloves and a measuring tape so you know if your tree is gonna be too big for your car. They give you twine but I would bring your own if you have it already. Also, bring something to wipe your hands of the sap from the tree. We still got sap on our hands even after wearing gloves! We come here every year, thanks to Living Social deals that pop up. The deals are not consistent as to when they release. In 2014, it came out around late Oct., then 2013 before it was about late Nov. So you really have to look. It is such a deal at 50% off. Basically about $30 for the tree of ANY size. THE LOT The lot is quite large!!! Lots of trees are available. The staff is super, super friendly and they provide you with a handsaw and twine. The rest is up to you. You can basically drive around the large perimeter and there are outlets for you to take a shortcut through the middle. These are dirt roads, so an SUV or truck is optimal. They do have a good number of trees, but the inventory seems to be getting a little more scarce each year when you are trying to find "the perfect tree". CLIMATE Being that it is in the Santa Cruz Mountains, it does feel about 10-15 degrees chillier than the South Bay. Bring layers as it is cold. Also, do not plan to go to here after a big rain fall. We waited an extra day after a big rain and it was still quite muddy. We saw at least 2-3 trucks get stuck in the mud. TIPS: 1] Do not plan to go to here after a big rain fall. 2] Do not park in the mud. You will get stuck. Opt to park on dry grounds. 3] Do not wear flip flops! That is not only gross in this setting, but it's not safe. 4] Drive to the end of the lot. You will find a better selection of trees. Everyone cuts at the front end of the lot. 5] When you pull in, don't forget to ask for a saw AND twine. Otherwise, you will need to trek all the way back. read more

We found our tree in 5 minutes this is because there were so many well shaped nice trees at this farm. We would have been happy to stay longer as the tree lot was beautiful, peaceful and clean. We wanted a ten foot tree so that fact that there was a flat $55 fee (including tax) was a great price. They provided portable bathrooms, a saw, and twine so bring along gloves, a tape measure or anything else you might want. I really appreciated that the the farm was just Christmas trees, no store, no jumpy castles, no sad looking reindeer being tormented by visitors, just a nice hike to find a tree. They allow picnicing but they don't provide any tables for that so bring a blanket. The staff was friendly and I'm sure they would have helped put the tree on the car if we wanted. They seem to be using a tree grounding technique where the trees grow back from the stumps after they are cut, this leads to the lot being a mix of large and small trees which makes finding the right size for your family easy.
