The berries are super fresh and sweet! I feel like it's the perfect summer fruit. The darker they are, the sweeter they are but i also really like the slight tartness that the just ripe ones have as well. I picked up 2 pounds on my first go but my family and I ate it all within 3 days so I had to go back to pick up 5 more pounds. I recommend texting or calling before you go to make sure they're open as they do sell out quickly. I didn't try the u-pick as I didn't have time but I would like to try next year!

However, since the cart wasn't there yet & we needed to use the restroom close by, we decided to just walk to the restroom. And we can see the front from there so we decided we would just walk back after. A car was coming so I told my daughter to move in so the car can pass. *HONK HONK* as if we were running. She rolls down the window and starts giving us a huge attitude about how we are not suppose to be walking around "Stay right there!" She was so completely rude I knew it had to be none other than the owner because everyone else we encountered were so kind! Literally a family with small children just walking didn't need to be honked at. We were already stopped when she approached so she could have just rolled her window down and spoke to us nicely. We didn't know there was a rule of no walking or we would have been more than happy to obligated. She should definitely have a staff member roaming the grounds instead of herself because she definitely cannot control her bad attitude and should not be out in the wild.

But as a kid, I never really had the opportunity to visit a farm or even grow my own fruits and vegetables. Living in constant suburbia meant frequent trips to Ralph's or Safeway. That all changed last Sunday when I picked my very own strawberries with my girlfriend at Swanton Berry Farm. After hearing my boss boast about picking 12 pounds (!!!) of the juiciest and most delicious strawberries, I knew I had to go. And what better person to take then my girlfriend who was a HUGE fan of strawberries. So Swanton Berry Farm is a local supplier of fresh and organic fruits along the beautiful coasts of Northern California. They have two locations for Berry picking: Coastways Ranch is next to Ano Nuevo State Park (which you should go to!) and The Farm Stand is a bit further south right outside Davenport. The main difference between the two is that the latter is only open for picking on weekdays (although you can purchase stuff everyday) whereas Coastways is accessible during the weekends from 10am-5pm. Really sweet deal since you can pretty much pick during any day of the week! We ended up visiting Coastways Ranch since it was a Sunday. Getting here was actually kind of a doozy for us. Though the drive was very scenic, it took a little over an hour from the South Bay Area. And that's because the only "quick" way to the coast was south on Highway 17 and back north up Highway 1. GPS came in handy, and there were fortunately signs directing where to go. If y'all get lost, just note that the ranch is around 10 miles north of Davenport. Besides the drive, hardest part was making into the parking lot because it's about a half mile of unpaved dirt. Have to drive slow otherwise you'll go into a ditch! Now if all this sounds too stressful, hear me out; it was SO WORTH THE JOURNEY. Once we got out of the car, we were greeted by ROWS UPON ROWS of strawberries - far as my tiny eyes could see. Immediately after we got our sturdy box from the stand, we washed our hands (there's a station) and immediately started picking as many as we could. Because we came right in the middle of the season (around summer), the strawberries were SO AMAZING. They came in all kinds of sizes. Some were a bit riper than others, so there was plenty of variety to choose from. We were allowed to sample however much we wanted before paying as long as we didn't waste anything. And by golly I filled my tummy and our box like no tomorrow because these were HANDS DOWN BAR NONE the BEST strawberries I've ever had in my life. The size, sweet taste, and color - these characteristics were so different and much more authentic compared to what you'd find in the store. For example, these strawberries were much smaller since they weren't pumped with growth hormones. True to what I'd learned in school, I'll probably never look at store bought strawberries again. After an hour of picking, we pretty much filled our entire box. It came out to be about 4 freaking pounds so use that as a measuring stick. I highly recommend only getting as much as you can eat in like a week since these suckers go bad FAST (or just freeze). Cost was $5 a pound ($4.5 if you get over 10 pounds) so we paid around $19. The guy at the stand actually gave me more money back in change, and I thought that was VERY generous of him! Farmers are a godsend I tell y'all. Truth be told, I never really cared about strawberries until my experience at Swanton Berry Farm. Sure, I thought they were really nice fruits but I wouldn't go out of my way to get them. Now, however, I am SO DOWN to drive over an hour to pick strawberries because Coastways Ranch and Swanton Berry Farm were definitely worth an "Omg, I'd travel 2 hours for this" rating. The farm sits at 2 acres and boasts a variety of fruit trees, some bee boxes, a small flower garden, and a very well stocked farmstand. The stand has a variety of in-season fruits and vegetables, starter plants and herbs (they had tomatoes and strawberries when I visited in April), and a bunch of locally made and seasonal goods. Not everything comes from the farm, but they source from other farms in the Bay Area and state, and local businesses. They also work with local businesses to use their produce for fun products like jams, cocktail mixers, and dried fruits. They have tours and events at the farm, we got a tour when we went and it was really cool to learn all about the history, see the different fruit trees, and then of course visit the farmstand after and shop around.

If you live in the Almaden or Branham area, it's such a cool little hidden gem and definitely worth stopping by. The fruit looked super fresh, though the prices are higher than I expected, more like Whole Foods level prices. I thought going straight to the source would mean much lower prices, but what you lose in price, you definitely gain in freshness. For example, their strawberries were $5 per little green basket (three for $15), which comes out to about $5 a pound. At Costco, organic strawberries are $5.49 for 2 pounds, roughly $2.75 per pound. The giant seeded watermelons were $12.49 here, compared to $6.49 at Walmart. (Suggestions from a visitor) A couple of friendly suggestions that I think would be really helpful: It would be great if they posted online what fruit is in season and what will be at the stand, along with the prices. That way people can plan ahead and know when to make the drive when their favorite fruits are available. Also, there are no signs letting customers know they can go in the back. I only knew because I saw pictures on Yelp. Locals who've been here before probably already know, but as a first-timer, it looked like an employee-only area so I didn't go back there. A simple sign would be awesome, it would bring more people to the back to sit, eat, and enjoy the space since most fruit stands don't have that nice extra feature. Overall, worth visiting if you don't mind paying a bit more for freshness.
