    Strawberry abundance.
    Christina K.

We ended up here after swinging by the Swanton Berry Farm just ten minutes south. THIS is the place to be for strawberry picking! Come here for the fruit, then go down there for the pies and ready-made foods. The fields here are SOOO much bigger and it's a beautiful scene to see the strawberry fields going all the way down to the pond. When you enter, you'll drive by their commercial farms and then to the patch for public picking. After seeing the sad strawberries at Swanton, these were just amazing - all were plump, bright red, with healthy green stems, and there were tons of strawberries! You can't help but pick them all. $4 a pound, which you pay for at the stand. I managed to bring these home in my purse on a plane (they got a bit smooshed) but my mom reported that two weeks later they were still ultra fresh. Families had brought kids and picnic lunches. It's a great weekend outing. I'd definitely do it again!

    Yum!

Awesome experience. We took my 3-year-old, and we all loved it. And the strawberries were THE BEST we've ever had. So delicious. Recommend bringing your own containers to collect the berries. We grabbed these from my child's play kitchen as we headed out the door!

U-Picking is easy with eyes closed Mis-stepping is all you see It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out It doesn't matter much to me Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Coastways Ranch Everything is real, and nothing to get hung about. Strawberry Fields forever! Beef-No Starr, drummer O __ __ \- | -/ | O / | ------- | O bass player Singer /|\/ | | - | - & guitarist O --------- O-------/ / \ / \ ================================================== Swanton Berry Farm in Davenport leases some land in Coastways Ranch, right here in Pescadero to grow organic strawberries (in season right now), and supposedly some other local berry types, for U-Pick. CeCe said it best....you want to map out approximately where this place is. Don't bother with GPS or your crusty i-Phone. I'll make it easier for you. Pre-locate the entrance to Ano Nuevo State Park's parking lot. When you are driving down Highway 1/Cabrillo Highway south from Half Moon Bay, it will take you about 45 minutes to an hour (depending on traffic). Once you pass the state park entrance to the parking lot (which will be on the right), SLOW DOWN. There will be some U-pick strawberries signs coming up on the left. If you're doing over 45 mph, you will have to slam on the breaks and do some Japanese auto geek style drifting with your A$N rice rocket, and break a left into a sand/dirt path, so ease off the gas trigger and get ready to do it smoothly without compromising the integrity of your vehicle. Locate your parking spot, then walk up past the porta-potties. To the left across, is the checkout/weigh stand. Get yourself some cardboard lids and plastic net boxes for the strawberries. You might want to use two lids, with one to cover the berries as it may get windy up there. Then hike yo ass up the terrain, and enjoy. It's a very nice and calming view, and it can get windy or foggy. Organic strawberries run $2.50 a pound, same price as last year. Cash only of course. The Swanton guys also sell their excellent tasting jars of Swanton Berry Farm jams, with some samples you can try (strawberry is superb, blackberry is not bad). They're $6 each, although you can also ahem...buy them at Whole Foods for the same price :-o A few more notes: - the berries come in various shapes and sizes, but as of Memorial Day weekend, a lot of them are fugly looking mishapened runts. Do not discriminate, you will be surprised at how excellent some of the darker toned smaller ones are, packed with sweetness with a little tart to boot. -Don't wear sandals or your favorite Manolo's. Some of the ditches get wet from rain or irrigation. You have been warned -Bring some water with you if you want to rinse and sample the goodness. -Be patient, don't immediately rummage through an entire row in the middle section (the front is obviously overpicked by now). You may find hidden gems in the back, or in random places. Don't overpick, you may end up wasting what you don't need, in which case it's a loss for both parties. -If you don't see it immediately, gently wave your hand through the leaves and stems, you might find a little treasure here and there on the inside, sheltered from view. Great fun for the little ones too. The downside? The berries, if they survive transit during hot days, will go bad quite quickly. Consume within a few days, or refrigerate immediately to last a day or two longer.

This place has Olallieberries. It is like a raspberry. These little babies are annoying to pick. Make sure you bring water and walk as far away from the entrance. Back there is more better berries. Since the closer to thr entrance, people have already taken them. This is a much slower picking rate. Only grab the black ones. They are sweet. Anything else, even purple will taste bitter. It takes a little time to start identifying them. It is about $2.50 a lb. You should bring your own container. Unless you don't mind paying $0.30 for a tray. No admission fee.

5 stars for a very fun experience. Yes it is a short drive away from most of us, but much of that drive is beautiful redwood trees and the coast. Come pick strawberries to your heart's content! Each strawberry tastes at least twice as good as the best you can find at any supermarket. However don't expect to find huge strawberries; here, size doesn't matter! Recommended for a fun date. Then drive down to Santa Cruz! No entry fee, pay for what you keep!

It's a quant ranch nestled along the east side of Hwy 1. The berries are fresh and tasty. Prices are fair. An added bonus to berry picking at Coastways Ranch is the crisp and gentle ocean breeze that provides for a uniquely beautiful experience.

They made it easy for you. Pick in the U-Pick designated area for the best strawberries.

After enjoying the day at a beach, we stopped at Swanton's Coastways Ranch. They have huge organic strawberries fields here. We went in 4:30pm, which was 30 min before they close so we thought they might not have good strawberries anymore after being picked all day. Not to worry, they just opened up a few more rows to pick. There were plenty of ripe sweet strawberries! No entrance fees Takes credit cards It was $4.50/lb yesterday We will definitely come back again!

Strawberries are actually pricey: $4.50/lb or $3.50/lb for buying a certain amount or more. Overall, super fun activity with friends and family. Weather was perfect!

    Gorgeous organic strawberries!

I wanted to stop off at the popular Pie Ranch before heading more south. We arrived at the pie farm stand on a Sunday afternoon recently. Pie Ranch is located in a nice road side area along the coast on Hwy 1 close to Davenport. Parking is limited in the small dirt parking lot out front. The pie farm stand looks like a rustic wooden barn from the outside and a state park visitor center in the inside. There was an outdoor small library for kids by the entrance which I thought was a nice touch. It's a free take one leave one book stand. There was a farmer's market vibe inside with local vegetables, fruit, baked goods, and locally produced pantry items for sale. Pie Ranch branded gifts and merchandise were on display as well. We ordered 2 strawberry streusel cutie pies, 1 lemon buttermilk blueberry cutie pie, 1 chocolate chip cookie, 1 frozen strawberry streusel whole pie, and 1 lemon better milk blueberry whole pie. All of the cutie pies were delicious. The cutie pie size was about right since we were sharing everything. The chocolate chip cookie was moist and gooey with loads of chocolate. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Pie Ranch. The staff were nice and helpful. There was a back patio with a few picnic tables that looked inviting. We enjoyed our food out there. The environment was family friendly. The price point was more in the high end but I understand due to location and everything was fresh, locally produced. I was happy to finally visit but I'm not sure when I will be back again.

Upon entering you are greeted by a beautiful farm stand full of vegetables, fruit, preserves, soap, cards, merch, and more. We grabbed a hot coffee with oat milk, a mixed berry 'cutie' pie, an apricot 'cutie' pie, an espresso shortbread, and French onion galette. I love the mixture of sweet and savory, and that they have these smaller pies perfect for roadtrip sharing if you don't want a big ol' pie to take togo. There are picnic benches outside and upon looking at their website, there is a beautiful story behind pie ranch (a working organic farm, an organization with a mission to build partnerships for a just food system, and an education center). Checking out their calendar of events, they have meadow dances, volunteer days, and so much more. Private site rentals and weddings are open to book, and they have private farm programs/retreats. One option includes a hands-on pie baking lesson..love it! I love the idea of heading with others to this beautiful location to learn culinary tips, tricks, and make something together building community within community. If you're looking for a snack, breathe of fresh air and to stretch your legs on your drive home or to your destination, Pie Ranch is where it's at. Also to note..the pie was absolutely delicious! Unfortunately it was gobbled up before any pictures could be taken :)

But right afterward we came to Sunnyside Produce and the difference was night and day. That contrast made me realize how important it is to give credit where it's due, especially after calling out bad service somewhere else. Sunnyside absolutely deserves praise. From the moment we walked in we were met with kind helpful people who were actually attentive and happy to assist. There was no attitude or indifference, just friendly efficient service. The team here clearly cares about what they do and about the customers walking through the door. The produce is fresh vibrant and well-organized, with a great mix of organic and local options that are thoughtfully stocked. Everything looked clean and cared for from the shelves to the displays, and it made shopping here feel relaxed and enjoyable. The prices are solid too, better than most other local places when you factor in the quality. It does not feel overpriced, and you actually leave with the sense that you got value for your money. What stood out the most to me is the atmosphere. This place has a soul. You are not just shopping, you are being welcomed. That is rare. After our visit I felt like this review needed to be written not just to balance out a negative one, but because Sunnyside Produce genuinely deserves recognition for doing things right. "Rest and relaxation"? "Root beer and rum"? Maybe we will never know. Let's get the easy stuff out of the way:: Ambience: you wouldn't even know the places there if you don't have a map leading you there or a referral from a local unfortunately. Not sure why they don't have a sign out. Service is a little irrelevant since there is simply a person behind the counter checking you out. Now onto the product: there really is only one offering that is hard to pass these guys by for if you're in Pascadero area: R&R offer a cup of peanut for $4 that is magically delicious and snackable. did President Jimmy Carter have peanuts this delicious from his peanut farm? I submit that he did not? Pro tip: Do not have them around if you feel an oncoming snack attack. You'll possibly consume the entire cup o' vegan legumes which brings me to an interesting factoid: did you know that a peanut is neither a pea nor a nut? It is indeed a legume. The peanut is more like one of those hideous lentils then delicious pea or a delicious nut. Why!? This seems so unnecessary. I wouldn't be surprised to find That President Jimmy Carter President Obama somehow Secretly teamed up to rename and re-categorize what is clearly a nut into a legume. This is much the way the President Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Mara Lago or whatever it was. A little personal story about R&R: it was the case that when I moved away from the central coast I found myself trying to replicate these tastey legumes By cooking peanuts in the oven at my new home which is 6300 feet above sea level. Many calculations must be made to adjust For cooking at that altitude versus at sea I think I have come close To replicating them but still no dice. I cannot get quite the coverage of salty goodness to adhere to the Redskins the way they have. This is my main struggle in life right now I have been trying to replicate this spicy peanut extravaganza and not really getting very close. Still worth it to just buy it here.
