It was Memorial Day weekend and we decided to bring my parents for a short road trip in the Pescadero area cruising along the coast towards Santa Cruz. I wanted to stop off at the popular Pie Ranch before heading more south. We arrived at the pie farm stand on a Sunday afternoon recently. Pie Ranch is located in a nice road side area along the coast on Hwy 1 close to Davenport. Parking is limited in the small dirt parking lot out front. The pie farm stand looks like a rustic wooden barn from the outside and a state park visitor center in the inside. There was an outdoor small library for kids by the entrance which I thought was a nice touch. It's a free take one leave one book stand. There was a farmer's market vibe inside with local vegetables, fruit, baked goods, and locally produced pantry items for sale. Pie Ranch branded gifts and merchandise were on display as well. We ordered 2 strawberry streusel cutie pies, 1 lemon buttermilk blueberry cutie pie, 1 chocolate chip cookie, 1 frozen strawberry streusel whole pie, and 1 lemon better milk blueberry whole pie. All of the cutie pies were delicious. The cutie pie size was about right since we were sharing everything. The chocolate chip cookie was moist and gooey with loads of chocolate. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Pie Ranch. The staff were nice and helpful. There was a back patio with a few picnic tables that looked inviting. We enjoyed our food out there. The environment was family friendly. The price point was more in the high end but I understand due to location and everything was fresh, locally produced. I was happy to finally visit but I'm not sure when I will be back again. read more

What a cool spot off Cabrillo Hwy to stop off the coast and into the delicious scents and smells of fresh pie. Upon entering you are greeted by a beautiful farm stand full of vegetables, fruit, preserves, soap, cards, merch, and more. We grabbed a hot coffee with oat milk, a mixed berry 'cutie' pie, an apricot 'cutie' pie, an espresso shortbread, and French onion galette. I love the mixture of sweet and savory, and that they have these smaller pies perfect for roadtrip sharing if you don't want a big ol' pie to take togo. There are picnic benches outside and upon looking at their website, there is a beautiful story behind pie ranch (a working organic farm, an organization with a mission to build partnerships for a just food system, and an education center). Checking out their calendar of events, they have meadow dances, volunteer days, and so much more. Private site rentals and weddings are open to book, and they have private farm programs/retreats. One option includes a hands-on pie baking lesson..love it! I love the idea of heading with others to this beautiful location to learn culinary tips, tricks, and make something together building community within community. If you're looking for a snack, breathe of fresh air and to stretch your legs on your drive home or to your destination, Pie Ranch is where it's at. Also to note..the pie was absolutely delicious! Pie Ranch was the cutest pit stop on my drive down Highway 1! They offer way more than just pies, including produce, pantry goods, crafts by local artists, etc. I bought the cutest sticker and also a print from an artist down in Santa Cruz. I also couldn't resist trying a mini pie and chose the Buttermilk Blackberry "Cutie Pie". It was delicious! The creaminess and tart berries went so well together. Wow what a great operation! Lots going on. Pie ranch also works with the community and schools, hosts a day of activity like cooking in the outdoor kitchen and baking pies together. Maybe I visited at the wrong time (an hour before closing), but there really many options available--only Chocolate Chess Pie. The Chocolate Chess Pie itself was fairly impressive though. But the lack of pretty much everything else (fresh and not frozen) was disappointing, especially when you've committed to driving almost 2hrs to visit Pie Ranch for the first time ever. I get it, I visited an hour before closing, but the closing time is 4pm and it's a trek to visit this location. Please have more inventory? Besides the pies, not much else were there other than gear, which seemed rather pricey. I'd visit and try again but at a much, much earlier time. read more

While of course they have their namesake pies, it's actually all the other locally made goods that I love to shop. They typically have a nice variety of teas, jams, other canned food goods, cocktail mixes, pottery, and fresh fruits and vegetables. A great place to shop around for anyone who loves to host or spend time in the kitchen. I've only tried a couple of their baked goods over the years, but my mom typically gets a treat or two when we stop in. They usually have a few different options for sweet, savory, and even a vegan or gluten free treat as well. Jamie W and I finally stopped by one morning when we were staying at Costanoa nearby because who doesn't want a slice of homemade pie in the middle of nowhere? The building visitors first enter is an elevated barn. Sure enough, there were pies and other baked items in their display case. But there was a lot of local goods as well - fresh produce, jams and juices, crushed tomatoes, earthenware, T-shirts, handmade household items. We stuck with the pie and had the $9 Lemon Blackberry Buttermilk Cutie Pie which was perfectly sized for two appetites (photo: https://yelp.to/-Qfn-OQ3HZ). That's too bad because the owners welcome visitors to explore their 14-acre farm which is ironically shaped like a slice of pie. As we were driving up the coast, my girlfriend found an article which noted "If a name like Pie Ranch doesn't make you swerve off the highway, there's something wrong with you." and friends, that article could not have been more spot on, to the extent we flagged the place to visit and--yes--swerved off US 1 just before blowing past it. The folks behind this operation are dedicated to creating an equitable "seed-to-table" food system and offer the quality results of their labor at a farmstand selling flour and grains, homemade preserves and shrubs, and unique condiments like poblano vinegar and smoked shishito-pepper jelly. We bought one of the shishito pepper jellies home, and it was just sublime. And oh right , the name... wouldn't you know it, they have quite a selection of pies-- more traditional flavors such as peach and chocolate cream, as well as local/seasonal choices such as lemon-buttermilk olallieberry, which is what we got and devoured with our friends we were visiting up in Oakland--just delicious. read more

We stopped here after hiking the Ano Nuevo State Park trail, so this was a good surprise as we were very hungry. They had plenty of pies - large ones, mini ones, and frozen ones. Pie Ranch is further down the coast from Pescadero and a great pit stop to pick up fresh baked pies. I came down pretty late in the day and was able to get the last blueberry lemon pie (delicious!). They had a few chocolate pies for sale as well. If you can't get their fresh pies in time, they also have frozen pies you can purchase. Pie Ranch is a working farm selling not just pies, but also fruits, produce, florals and souvenir items. I'm a big Dutch apple pie fan, and of course, they did not have this so I opted for a mini Keylime pie and it was so delicious! I also went with a cold brew coffee, which came in this nice little bottle! Also, amazing! Had fewer pies than I was expecting - they only had about 3-4 variations of flavors in different sizes and a couple of breads from Companion Bakeshop. Everything is baked at Companion with ingredients from the Ranch, then is brought over every morning. They do sell other items like beef jerky, candles, stationery, tees, produce, jams, etc. It's very pleasant inside - there's a sort of quaint charm in the air. We got the strawberry galette, which I found to be a little too tart, and the lemon olallieberry custard pie, which was delicious. I also tried the mango habanero beef jerky, which was way too spicy for me, and bbq jerky, which was good but on the tough side. I'll have to come back again for apple and pumpkin pies this season! read more

3.5 stars overall, but rounding up since the profits from Pie Ranch's farmstand go directly into supporting their non-profit educational farm's programs with a focus on food justice. Located right on Highway 1, Pie Ranch offers sustainable and locally grown produce, preserves, local goods, and pie. They weren't busy yet around 1pm on a Saturday in June, and there was still a full selection of fresh pies to choose from. I didn't realize that their pies are from Companion Bakeshop in Santa Cruz, and not actually baked onsite. That was a little disappointing, given that their name is Pie Ranch.. in any case, I ended up going with one of the pies (I believe it was the Lemon Blueberry, https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=nv5izeTRhLpy7aKsYqTwIw&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg). They only had a few pies available, and you had to either choose the small galette size or a full pie (no slices were available). The lemon blueberry was good, and the filling was smooth and slightly tangy. I loved their flaky and buttery crust. However, I'd prefer to go to one of Companion Bakeshop's locations in Santa Cruz, since they sell pies by the slice and also have a large variety of other baked goods available. Pie Ranch also had ice cream from Revival Ice Cream in Monterey available, and you can try their award winning Bee's Knees ice cream (honey, beeswax, homemade honeycomb candy), in addition to a large variety of different ice cream flavors. However, if you've never tried the Bee's Knees, I'd highly recommend it since it's super unique AND delicious. No indoor seating is available, but they do have a few picnic tables outside if you want to enjoy your pie/ice cream there. It was worth checking out Pie Ranch once, and it's a good place to stop by if you're looking for one stop shopping for pie, ice cream, organic produce, jams/jellies/hot sauces, and other miscellaneous homemade items. However, the items are on the pricier side, and I'd rather stop by one of the other local fruit stands along Highway 1. Parking was easy to find that day since it wasn't busy. read more

We walked into the barn/shop and were greeted with lots of yummy things to take home. They mill their own flower and have their baked products baked off-site at a commercial kitchen. It is delish. I highly highly highly recommend their Walnut pie! My dad and I bought the mini to try and our only regret is not getting a large! So we came back and finally got our large walnut pie today with absolutely no regrets. To say its delicious hardly does it any justice. The walnut pie is not to sweet, soooo buttery, and the crust crispy (and doesn't feel like a chore to eat, if you know what I'm saying!) my family isn't even full of pie people, but the Pie Ranch is now an essential stop when we go to Half Moon Bay. My mom's favorite part is that this pie doesn't leave any lingering sweet icky feeling in your mouth. It's simply a beautiful nutty flavor and then it's gone much too soon. Also, this place is getting more popular which is great for them but kind of sad for my pie acquisition needs. We showed up at 2:30pm and they were sold out of all their fresh baked goods since 2pm! They are called Pie Ranch and there's a pie in their logo. But there were no pies at Pie Ranch, no fresh ones anyway. Whether small or large, all had already been sold out by mid afternoon on a weekend. But they are open until 5pm. There was a minuscule selection of frozen pies available (walnut or lime) for $22. Neither the flavors nor that price for a frozen pie appealed to me so I passed. Therefore in an attempt to at least leave with something since we drove there, we bought some miscellaneous items: a toffee cookie, fresh strawberries (very sweet) and a strawberry lavender jam. They sell pastries but most were sold out as well. Cute store in a barn with some picnic tables outside but Pie Ranch not having any fresh pies available upon walk-in was disappointing. I understand that you can reserve a pie in advance for pick up but most customers are tourists and will not be doing that. I ended up getting my fresh pie from Arcangeli's who had plenty available. In reading background of Pie Ranch I support what they stand for with integrating with true schools to help teach kids good healthy living and learn how to grow foods from the ground to make something like fresh pies. Life of a farmer is not easy. All natural and organic ingredients, just read the frozen box the pie comes in. Ingredients you can read and understand. There's like a garden in back I think and more parking. I don't know because I didn't have time to explore. There's picnic tables to eat your food outside the shop. Like other reviewers, I also was expecting a large selection of pies to pick from, but I did come in the last hour before closing and they had only a like personal peach pies left like maybe 6-8 left? They did have a whole frozen peach pie which I got and one personal pie. Rest of shop had other non food items. I didn't have time to look around, but found a cute soap shaped like a pie which I thought was funny. I rather eat a pie instead, but that's just me. From the reviews, I think the Lemon Buttermilk pie sounds like the best pie with the comments here. All the stops along the Highway 1 will be an adventure, as you are driving through so many small towns. I did eat the small pie when I got home. It's an okay pie with all natural ingredients which I give thumbs up for. But I wouldn't go out if my way for it, unless you happen to be driving through and decide to stop. But I was able to put a fresh whole pie on hold. As long as I picked it up by 4p, it was mine. Supposedly they will release your pie to the wild during the last hour if it's not picked up by them. However, I got a sad voicemail about a half hour I made this call. Unfortunately, the bakers had made a boo boo and switched the salt and sugar that day. Wow. Pretty hard to believe that these pros could make a mistake like that, and sadly with a whole days worth of pie, but hey, they're only human. I'm more impressed that they took measures quickly to right the wrong and offer alternative options. Luckily, one worked for us. We were able to snag a whole frozen pie (different flavor than the one we intended to buy fresh) for a fraction of the fresh pie price. We got the strawberry streusel which had a sweet, crumbly top layer and moist and fruity center and a decent crust.
