I would probably change the name of the business since I expected more pies and varieties of pies. All the pies they had were in the custard direction like chocolate, lime and lemon buttermilk, plus the walnut pie. No berries or fruit pies, which to me is a bit disappointing. The prices of the little pies are a bit steep, but they taste delicious. The value of their freshly baked bread is definitely better. I won't bend over to go back, but if I'm in the area and crave pie, I might stop by again. read more

We were excited and expected a delicious peach pie, but what we got was pure crumbly dry pie with no pieces of peaches in it, it was a mini $9 peach pie to share, we tossed it after we each took a bite, it was that bad! read more

Ran in admittedly 5 minutes before closing to grab and go a hostess gift. Rather than a polite "heads up we're about to close" I basically got scolded. Garlic twist bread was fantastic! Also bought the buttermilk lemon blackberry pie! So delicious.

Second time here no pie! Cute place with a little bit of everything but pie. Will try again another day.

Great spot! Any establishment that is concerned with food justice, offers education on the topic, and uses eco-friendly practices, is a five-star and then some to me! Pie Ranch is a15-20 minutes away from the Pescadero town area, off of the 1, and it's a great place to stop by. They were running out of pies by the time we got there, but luckily they still had some lemon buttermilk pies left (even though they weren't on display). We didn't eat it right then and there, but the next day I tried it (after it was resting in the refrigerator), and it was delicious! I'm not a big fan of lemon, but something about the way the lemon was coupled with the milk filling was perfect! You can never go wrong with using organic ingredients, so I was very much pleased with this experience. We didn't get to walk around the grounds much, but I believe they give tours - so definitely take advantage of that! A great stopping place. Do it and support local farms! read more

Slow for pie! My friend and I were visiting Ano Nuevo state park to see the elephant seals in all their beachy, bathing, barking glory and kept seeing signs for pie and decided we must have some after our trip. After trekking the sand dunes, I was famished and to the cute little Pie Ranch I entered. There are a few items such as farm fresh eggs and veggies and fruits on a table in the middle of the quaint establishment. The case of goodies was toward the back and that day was displaying lemon buttermilk mini pie, apple mini pie, apple galette, and cheddar broccoli hand pie, as well as some cookies and brownies. I opted for a hand pie and a lemon mini pie. Never really having had lemon flavored pie before, this pie was mild and creamy, not too sweet or overwhelmingly lemony. The pie crust however left much to be desired, as though I am a fan of healthy eats and whole wheat is great, it made the crust dense and chewy, unlike the conventional flaky crusted pie. The crust for the hand pie on the other hand, was flakier than the pie crust (but still denser than regular pie crust because of whole wheat), but the filling was lacking some salt and flavor. All in all, these stars go to support the establishment with freshness and quality at its forefront. The ambiance is also woodsy and quaint; I like it a lot. I am definitely willing to give Pie Ranch a revisit to taste more goodies in the future. read more

Anyone that reviews this place poorly should have their soul checked. The pies are delicious. If you got one you didn't like- please remember they're made off-site and this place is a NON-PROFIT that provides education about farming to children. I don't care if they sell cow patties. But thankfully they don't, instead selling my family's favorites like chocolate chess, key lime and lemon buttermilk pies. I've nearly only been rung up by the nicest people with the exception of one employee that had less personality than my pants but it's cool. Delicious jams and beautiful locally crafted kitchenware round out the gem along with prime organic produce. A little "free mini library" for kids greets you before you enter. If more places like this existed, the world wouldn't be so angry. The kind of angry that gives a Non-for-profit pie "stand" a mere one star. Xo read more

Pie Ranch was so cute, warm & welcoming! The store itself is a barn with strung out twinkling lights, worn in comfy sofas/chairs & rustic knick knacks. We went in right before they closed. Wanted to try a rhubarb pie but as luck would have it the lady in front of me took the last two. So I got stuck (& not such a bad thing...) with a walnut pie & a lemon buttermilk pie! Oh & had a bite of their chocolate sea salt cookies! All natural, all organic & all ingredients grown in their own backyard...literally! OH MY! PS just had a bite of both pies & while I'm a lemon lover I'm pleasantly surprised that the walnut pie was just the right amount of ingredients with the ultimate nutty taste without too much sweetness! Can't wait for breakfast tomorrow. Slow for pie! read more

My bf and I stopped by Pie Ranch on our way home and got an Orangeblossom Galette and a Honey Nut Oat Pie. We ate the galette right away and it was delicious! I loved the almond flavor and the orangeblossom added a nice flavor that wasn't too strong or sweet. We tried out the Honey Nut Oat Pie at home after dinner and it was also delicious and surprisingly not too sweet. The texture of the pie was my favorite part, it was very crumbly inside and the crust was so good! They had some savory pies that we wanted to try but they were already sold out at around 3pm. There are also a bunch of other local goods and fresh produce for sale here. This is definitely a good pit stop if you're doing a road trip down the coast! read more

This is one of those random stops on cabrillo/highway one that make going up/down the coast so legendarily epic. It's also tricky to review as what people think it is, isn't really what it is and also depending on when you come your experiences can be quite different. Parking isn't any too big a deal. Sure you might have to try one of those challanging lefts against the never ending stream of summer cars but with a bit a patience it's doable and the gravel lot will have room either in front or in back. Inside it's a farmers/garden market/educational center set up in a barn. As the non profit part of this is community based agriculture-lots of youth programs-you can learn a bit about where your food comes from. This is also a working farm, with a native garden in back that you can take a look at. All that is utterly charming but they are also locally famous for pie. The quality is outstanding no lie, and it can become the center bragging point of any gathering, but it's also one of (if not the most) expensive [ie you can buy. something along the lines of forty bucks a pie, which may or may not be a deal breaker for you. Thankfully the other items are much more affordable and the coffee pot is always on, always strong, and always welcome at around a buck a cup. Bring cash though as the credit processing machine doesn't always work, and there is no cell phone coverage in this spot. Note that there will be less foodstuffs in winter and some things-like strawberries-are only available in season. All in all it's one of those great quirky, mellow spots well worth a stop and browse. A must do if you enjoy cooking. read more

I really love this place. Sometimes they have more options than others. I wrestled with whether or not to write an update, but I decided that I should share a few thoughts. We stopped by yesterday during another trek to Año Nuevo State Park. This has been a go-to spot when driving along Highway 1 anywhere south of Half Moon Bay toward Santa Cruz. We purchased several items -- and they were fantastic! The strawberry galettes were almost divine! The lemon shortbreads were very tasty (especially during our later hike). The no-flour brownies are magnificent! I know that some people mentioned that the pie selections are limited. I suspect that two factors play into this: Season and demand. From what I understand, the pies are made on-site from the ranch's own ingredients. Those ingredients will probably vary depending upon the seasons. Moreover, the fact that they sell out of certain items is a testament to just how good those items are! The old maxim about the "early bird gets the worm" might be in play here. If you're waiting to stop by later in the day, you might find fewer items in the case. We have learned to stop by BEFORE our visit to nearby Año Nuevo SP, Wilder Ranch or Pigeon Point. If we wait until later in the day, we might go "pie hungry." One last thing: I noticed that the young woman behind the counter did make some political comments. I have no problem with individuals or even organizations (including non-profit organizations) engaging in political discourse. However, this woman made a few statements about President Trump. Regardless of whether I agree or disagree, it has always bothered me when businesses take such specific stands about politics or politicians. It might serve to alienate potential customers (many of them tourists) or potential supporters of the ranch. Support for sustainable farms like this is -- and should be -- bipartisan. There is no real need to bring up something like a personal political preference. It really does leave a "bad taste" in one's mouth. It bothered me enough that I considered removing a star (or multiple stars). However, I appreciate Pie Ranch and their work. They really do offer some great quality products. read more

I think we got unlucky with our timing. Arrived on Sunday on MLK weekend at 3:30pm. Only 3 large pies left at $32 a pop. Really wanted to try a mini pie to see what all the fuss and signs are about. You have to call as soon as they open to place your order but I have been to this spot several times and have never been disappointed. In July the lemon pie, berry and strawberry were in season and we tried all three. The desserts are all prepared with organic ingredients from the farm and they always taste so richly flavored and light. read more

BARN DANCE!!!! If it wasn't so far away, I'd go every month. What a blast. Great for people of all ages. Adults and kids early on, and as bedtime approaches for the young'uns, the college students start to show up. Many different dances through the evening, each taught and then done. Different sized groups for each dance, forcing mingling while also allowing you to stay with friends. WONDERFUL!!! read more

As locals, we aren't super impressed with the Pie Ranch. A lot of elements are a hit or miss. The good - it's a decent stop off highway 1 to view or participate in a volunteer farm at certain times of the year. You are free to walk around the premises behind the store. Either park at the store and walk back into the farm or drive back directly. The bad - the pies and other offerings in the store are mediocre and overpriced, and we could do without the heavy handed political commentary. Overall, it's an okay stop if you have the time. read more

Even at the end of the day, the staff here is very friendly. Everything here looks like it's homemade with a touch of love. The pie's at this place are absolutely good and worth every penny. This place was horrible. I got an apple pie and a gluten free walnut brownie. The brownie was ok, but the Saran Wrap was open on the side, and I believe I found a hair on my brownie. It was so rich that by the end of the brownie I could barely manage to take another bite. The pie was completely awful. The crust was hard and dry, and tasted weird, and there was barely any filling. When there was some filling it was disgusting. It was a weird puke color and they left the skin on the apples. There was a piece of skin that had black dots all over it, I ate it and it was so bad I spit it out. You would think a place with the word pie in its name would have actually good pies. Anyways, don't go here it was disgusting and a waste of money! $23 for a single pie... that was horrible. Just go somewhere else. read more

Take six ultra fresh duck eggs, whisked in a metal mixing bowl. Blend in diced and seeded Early Girl, dry-farmed organic tomatoes. Add grated Swiss cave-aged Emmenthaler, Redmond salt, Spanish olive oil. Put it all in preheated cast-iron skillet on a 400 F outdoor gas grill, wait 20 minutes, and boom! You have the basis for a perfect summertime meal. Add in some fresh greens, radishes, cucumbers, some grilled Shishito or Jimmy Nardello peppers, crack open a bottle of Pellegrini Sonoma Zinfandel or Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc/Viognier white (both available at Trader Joe's for under $13), and you are in locavore heaven. And just where did those duck eggs come from? Here, of course! At the Pie Ranch, where home chefs in the know come to bask in farm-to-table heaven. Sure, you can order a strawberry rhubarb pie to go, like all the others in line. Or, you can grab some lemon cucumbers, stock up on summer squash, stash away a bunch of lacinato kale, pick up a 2 lb. bag of fresh milled whole wheat flour, and by all means, take home some Pescadero duck eggs, because these make the perfect cast-iron frittata, and that is a thing of beauty. Pie Ranch is a great Highway 1 rest stop. It's not just about the pie. There is much more to discover, if you open your eyes and broaden your mind. You'll never think the same way about your food again. And that is a very good thing, indeed, read more

Here's a Pie Ranch review on Pi Day. I visited on the third Saturday of last February for the monthly farm tour. Third Saturdays are when Pie Ranch holds their volunteer work day, farm tour, pot luck and barn dance. I arrived just in time for the tour, paid my $5 since I didn't volunteer, and waited around with the group for the tour to begin. 10-15 minutes later, we asked some of the other people working there and found out that the tour is located at Upper Slice. I was hungry and a bit confused on why the place was named Pie Ranch since there was no pie to be had that day. During the tour, i found out that the farm is called Pie Ranch because of this triangular, pie-shaped slice of land which produces everything you need to make pie (fruits, dairy, wheat, etc). Founded in 2002, Pie Ranch is a non-profit working farm with the mission of teaching urban high school students about food and sustainability. One of the co-founders, Nancy, gave us a very informative, captivating tour covering the history, triumphs, and struggle of running her non-profit farm. They're still working on paying off their land, and in the future once they have more funding, they hope to fix up their buildings (Nancy currently lives in a yurt), expand the pie operations, and possibly expanding into a dairy farm. When I asked Nancy about the pies, I found out that they will start selling pies at their farm stand sometime this month in March (I forgot the exact date). They used to partner up with Mission Pie in San Francisco, but no longer do that. I believe that the pies are made by the students. The stand sells premade whole pies ($23 for large, $9 for mini, and $5 for galettes). They also sell fresh eggs for $7 a dozen. Nancy turned off the solar-powered electric fence so that we could enter the chicken coop during the tour, feed the chicken, attempt to catch and hold them, and collect their warm, freshly laid eggs. The tour ended after the flour milling demonstration (they sell flour at the stand too). The tour lasted 1.5-2 hours and ended in time for the potluck. My boyfriend and I had to rush back to the city so we didn't stay after the tour, but Pie Ranch looks like a fun place to return to again to try the pie and participate in the community pot luck and barn dance. This Saturday, March 17th, is their next work day and barn dance - details are on their website. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed visiting here, although I cannot speak for their pies since after lunch I didn't feel like investing $25 on a pie of size too large for my stomach at the time... but I really liked what this place was about and that's why I feel that people should take advantage of this quaint and cute little shop and pay it a visit! They are very big on sustainable and organic farming which is always great; their produce all look extremely healthy, green and gives you that good for you feeling. They sell organic (JUMBO SIZED) eggs for $7 a dozen which is a steal considering how big the eggs are. They even have an egg scale which I never knew that was how people distinguished between small medium large and jumbo eggs! For the most part though I definitely was expecting something a bit more, when I walked in it was mostly empty inside and dimly lit despite it being well lit outside in the afternoon sunshine. I just wish they sold slices since I normally would not buy a whole pie anywhere, even if it's famous and delicious ... read more

This was a strange visit. I saw several signs on Highway 1 advertising PIES on my way north on business. I made a mental note to stop to buy a pie for the family on my way home. The place is easy to find because the PIE signs lead you right in. I arrived 20 minutes before the pie stand opened. I decided to wait because with so many PIE signs advertising the product it had to be good. Right at noon a young lady swung the barn door open and promptly exited as I entered. Another young woman was cutting giant sunflower stalks. There was a bat inside the barn circling the perimeter, nonstop. It was truly surreal. I asked the woman cutting the flower stalks if I could buy a PIE. She stated to me, 'this is more than PIE stand you know". I told her the PIE signs on the road suggest otherwise. She invited me to look around but I only wanted a pie or two. Then she said, "I told you she would be back in a minute". (she never did tell me that) She said this as the bat continued flying around us at eye level. I asked her if the bat is some sort of pet and she said it came in 6 days ago and all it does is fly around. Finally the first woman returned and I asked her if I could buy a pie. There were three pies on display. I asked for a peach pie and she pulled one up from underneath the counter. The pies come from a bakery on Santa Cruz. Almost a bait and switch. I bought the peach pie ($23.00) and a mini lemon version for $8.00. When I saw the numerous highway signs for pies it immediately conjured images of a couple of grandmas baking pies since the wee hours of the morning. Home made pies from a farm grandma sold in a barn. Couldn't be further from the truth. Their mission statement says they are a demonstration farm dedicated to social justice. I don't know what that means. Four stars in aggregate. Two of those stars are for the bat. read more
