Today's Red Haven peaches
Kacy O.

Picked up fresh Red Haven peaches today at the orchard. Woohoo, summer fruit is best purchased at Novakovich!! Take a slow drive up the driveway with the windows down to the Novakovich Farm stand making sure to keep your eyes on the road as you inhale the sweet fragrance of the stone fruit trees. (This is a narrow driveway hence the recommended slow drive up to the farm stand.) Then, drive counter clockwise around the orange tree so you can park close to the fence to drive back to the main road after making your purchase. (Bring reuseable bags if you plan on making a large purchase...which you probably will. (Hint! Hint!) Enjoy your fruit in a matter of days so you can return more than once a week.

The best stone fruits! This is what first made Santa Clara famous. Make your summers sweet.

Cherry season!

Can you pick your own fruit?

No, you are not allowed to pick your own fruit!! Since customers are not properly trained to pick fruit it could ruin the crop for following years.

I was blown away by this farmers market, I don't hear about it all that often and I'm shocked that…read moreI don't. It was way bigger than I expected and had a great variety. Many of the fruit and vegetable stands were huge, tables and table of produce. A good amount of vendors were giving out samples, anything from fruits, juices, salsas, and more! There were plenty of baked good options, almost too many to choose from. The only area that it really lacked was there weren't a ton of hot to order and eat now food vendors, but they still did have a few. The market is in the parking lot at West Valley, it was easy to find a spot a little further way from the market, while still being in the same lot. There is only one entrance/exit for the parking in that area so it can be a little hectic trying to get in and out, but actual parking was a breeze.

This market is pretty great, with the only downside being that it's a bit out of the way for the…read moregreater Bay Area. That being said, it's got pretty much everything you'd need and more, and every vendor sells high quality stuff, some quite unique. There are plenty of mainstays like produce vendors, a couple meat and dairy vendors, bakeries, and some rare finds like African stews, spices, mushrooms, and local kombucha. The hot food and ready-made items are really good, as well - some standouts being the Asian fusion plate lunch place, the dim sum lady, and the pupusa stand (with the hottest pickles imaginable). The layout is also intuitive with the produce in the back and the prepared food in the front. Sadly, the school no longer provides the bathrooms for use during the market so the only options are porta potties, though they're kept pretty clean. Great one-stop shop market for the area, don't sleep on this one!

At Leigh High School Yes it is small but it is a nice…read morefarmer's market. I talked with most of the venders. Most of them do not use pesticides but they are not certified organic. It does cost a lot to be certified and it does involve a lot of record keeping. But this is so important to oversee third party testing. This farmer's Market is not advertising certified Organic. So I don't think anyone can fault them for not being so. However, in California this what most consumers are looking for in a local Farmer's Market. My favorite Produce Table: was in the back with lots of samples, almonds, and cherries. They were also very friendly and engaging. I bought some fresh vegetables from at stand with affordable prices. I found a huge bunch of dill, parsley, and spinach for $5 (3 bunches for $5 and there were other options too). The honey table: looked great and is located in South San Jose. I didn't need honey today, but I would be interested. Bread: Well another vendor recommended Beckman's bread from Santa Cruz. I make my own. But the granola is very delicious. It's not too sweet and a good flavor. Another vender had bread and pastries. I will be back to try a scone. Many options! Parking is easy. The corporate Food Industry is scary. Anything to support local, sustainable, and regenerative. A small recommendation- This farmer's Market should be renamed. I have lived in the neighborhood for four years and never knew it was here. And any marketing might help you. Maybe students and teachers get a discount once a month. * I personally will be looking for the USDA certification for organic whenever possible. But this is still a great option for anyone looking to support local and small businesses.

It was like 8 tents total. From what I remember, there was CA bakeshop, Little Sky Bakery, Tamales, Hummus, berries, veggies, honey. Everything we tasted was good and the hummus guy was super friendly, offering us his hummus randomly while we were talking. Pretty empty, not many people. Will wait until the spring season to see if the other vendors come back! Plenty of parking, there's two sides.

Continuing my tour of local Farmers Markets, this week I visited the one at Santana Row. One of the…read moremain reasons I'm giving it only 3 stars is the parking situation as it's always atrocious at Santana Row. Right now, their employee lot in the back is completely closed for construction, which makes things even worse for visitors trying to shop or dine. The market itself is set up near the movie theater, but the layout feels messy. Vendors are scattered in between the outdoor dining areas, so you get a stretch of stands, then a big gap of people eating dinner, then more stands, and then more diners. It doesn't flow well and feels disorganized. As for vendors, it's the usual mix: fruits and vegetables, flowers, and some assorted foods. Nothing in particular stood out to me, and honestly there isn't much that would make me choose this market over any of the others I've been to or any vendor here that I haven't seen before at a different market. It was nice to finally check it off the list, but I wouldn't go back.

Every Wednesday, the food truck opens up for its weekly farmers market, and the line is always long. I decided to give it a chance and purchase a whole chicken. One positive aspect I noticed is that once you purchase a chicken, it is carefully packed in a paper bag instead of plastic, like Costco and several grocery supermarket delis. On a personal note, I found the chicken to be delicious. I am pleased to have tasted such a high-quality.
