I recently left a pretty scathing review of Capitola Produce Market near Gayles Bakery because the experience there was genuinely disappointing. But right afterward we came to Sunnyside Produce and the difference was night and day. That contrast made me realize how important it is to give credit where it's due, especially after calling out bad service somewhere else. Sunnyside absolutely deserves praise. From the moment we walked in we were met with kind helpful people who were actually attentive and happy to assist. There was no attitude or indifference, just friendly efficient service. The team here clearly cares about what they do and about the customers walking through the door. The produce is fresh vibrant and well-organized, with a great mix of organic and local options that are thoughtfully stocked. Everything looked clean and cared for from the shelves to the displays, and it made shopping here feel relaxed and enjoyable. The prices are solid too, better than most other local places when you factor in the quality. It does not feel overpriced, and you actually leave with the sense that you got value for your money. What stood out the most to me is the atmosphere. This place has a soul. You are not just shopping, you are being welcomed. That is rare. After our visit I felt like this review needed to be written not just to balance out a negative one, but because Sunnyside Produce genuinely deserves recognition for doing things right. While sitting and waiting for a friend, I decided to purchase produce. I have seen this produce spot before and never been here. I am so happy I decided to go inside! The produce was spot on fresh and farm market quality. They were getting ready to close, so I had to hurry. Nobody was hurrying me, I just noticed that the gates were being slowly closed. I purchased veggies with plans for making a vegetable soup base for the week. The mushrooms were so delicously fresh and plump, the onions super fresh looking with no blemishes. I bought carrots and bell peppers too, which were super looking! I cannot wait to make my veggie soup. I did see people leaving with to go containers which makes me wonder if I missed out on some treats here, so I will be back. Cheers and happy eating, read more

Great produce stand, great people, but please train your employees on basic Covid laws. No charge for bags and masks over your nose. Seems like I get charged about 50% of the time I'm there for bags, and during renewed Covid laws, I am not suppose to. Masks being worn properly are a big deal as well. Sunnyside has been my first choice for produce for quite some time. The selection is fresh and they carry organic as well as conventional produce. They have a very good olive oil selection too. I Some room for improvement? Yeah, but only of late. Neighboring Beer Thirty seems to have quite a few of the parking places taken up after 5:00. Sunnyside staff shrugs their shoulders and not so pleasantly tells us to park across the street at the veterinarian's office and cross the street. And by "cross the street," they mean dodge the cars coming around that bend where there is no marked crossing. Maybe something could be worked out with Beer Thirty and parking after Sunnyside closes? Also, the staff is getting a bit lax. Tall, lanky guy with baseball cap decides to sit his denim clad butt on the counter (yeah, the same counter where we put our food), his back towards the customer and reach around to put their produce on the scale and then lean in to enter it on the register. Finally, one of his female coworkers told him he should get off the counter. My issues with Sunnyside are brought up here because I like them and want them to continue being the good market that they have been. read more

I really like this produce stand. Definitely sucks for the other poster to get rotten food, but maybe things have gotten better since then. I looked into the health inspection results (http://sccounty01.co.santa-cruz.ca.us/eh/consumer_protection/FoodFacilityViolations.pdf) and they don't have any violations. They have not had any major or minor violations in the last two years of inspections. Not really sure what he's looking at... Anyways, they have a large selection and anything they don't have, you can put in an order for the buyer (he goes to the local growers about twice a week) for more unusual items and if he finds some of what you're looking for that's of good quality, he'll pick them up for you. That's what I love about local markets: it's much more personal. No gargantuan tomatoes or zucchini like you find at Safeway, just real fruits and veggies. I would definitely recommend Sunnyside. Plenty of space to park and very easily accessible. read more

Produce is the best - very fresh. I love shopping here but employees should keep their masks on. Frankly, I lost my appetite watching an employee shouting across the store while not wearing a mask. Best produce ever! Always fresh, a great selection. Beautifully displayed. Staff is friendly and helpful. Parking is easy. The stand, which is open year round, carries staples such as milk, juices, a small section of canned and packaged foods, and an assortment of breads and cheeses. And it's right next to the Fish Lady, which is the only place to buy your seafood. So, there is no reason to shop anywhere else! read more

The product at this shop is always very good and I have been buying here for years. The staff, on the other hand, is just so so and really not concerned about their customers I feel. I basically wish I could do all my shopping here and skip the grocery store! This is my go to place for picking up a few last minute things I need for dinner, they have the best produce and it's always super easy to park. Even though the businesses around it have gotten really busy, Sunnyside always makes sure their parking is available for customers. GUYS!!!! Sunnyside is now selling Christmas trees down at the patch on Daubenbiss/Soquel. The trees are beautiful, smell good and are full. I've been going here for many years and am happy to say it is my FAVORITE store to get delicious fruits and veggies. The staff is very friendly, approachable, and seem to know it all when I ask questions about where their stuff comes from, or when I want to know which was the best of the best. Recently went back which I do weekly to pick up some pixies (small Mandarins) and was treated to a bag of them and handed a bouquet of tulips, all for free. The people here are phenomenal. The produce is fantastic. Still pricey but worth every cent especially when afforded an occasional 'good customer' award with free pixies and free tulips. I have taken back fruit which was not so good and Warren replaced it. Many times there are samples to try and if not, they will cut something open when asking about it. We live right around the corner from Sunnyside Produce, so it is very convenient for us to shop there. However, if the produce isn't good, I wouldn't buy it. That has never been the case here. You walk in and are surrounded by nothing but vibrant colors of produce. Everything we have ever bought was fresh and lasted for days. The prices are WAY better than Safeway. I like to stop by Sunnyside and buy our produce and then swing by Safeway for the staples. Years ago the staff did come across as snobbish, but not anymore. I've been going here for a while. Most of the times it has been good, but certainly not stellar or above any of the other good markets in the area. I do like to support the local independents, but this one is now a challenge. The true test of an organization is how they respond to a disgruntled customer. Such is my case. I called them Saturday afternoon, asked for the owner, got the asst. mgr. I told her that the red peppers and garlic that I picked up this morning was rotten. After a brief conversation that went no-where, I finally explained again (3rd time) that I did not want my money back, I am not going to exchange and NO I did not keep the receipt. I just wanted to make sure they checked the produce so this doesn't happen again. I was not getting through. The conversation ended on the note from the asst mgr, asking if I checked the product before I bought it to make sure it wasn't rotten. Hmmmm, yes, I like to buy rotten produce so I can call on a beautiful afternoon and complain! At that point, I said we're not getting anywhere. They have now lost me as a customer, since I now need to check the product very carefully all the time. All this for a bunch of static about $5 worth of goods. Great economics. That is not what I expect, nor pay for. Also, just for kicks I checked the Santa Cruz County Health inspection results. You may want to take a look at that before you go. read more
