I'm definitely happy we came to this place! My sister and I wanted to check out some Christmas Trees here, so we stopped by this farm one afternoon. Located off of 87, on Skyline Blvd, part of the Santa Cruz County, is where this beautiful Ranch shine on a mountain hilltop. As we drove up the hill, I immediately mesmerize by the cool breeze of fresh air, the calming smell of fresh Christmas trees, and the pleasant views of this beautiful greenery surrounding us. Such an amazing scenes! Very pretty Ranch! I noticed the signed right right away when we've arrived. The tree cost 70 dollars plus tax. You can cut your own tree. We still love JS Tabacco for the selection of trees and fair prices. Some places down the hill charge $90 for trees, but they still charge $60 for any sized Douglas Fir and $70 for White Firs. We've been coming here for years and have loved it the best out of all the farms we've been to. They also have Grand Firs and Blue Spruces, but only in the first section on the left (turn down the first left and park, then go to the left side for those), the rest of the farm is strictly Douglas Firs. Sharp saws, friendly service, fun cutouts to take photos with, and a small play area give JS holiday charm. Bring your breakfast and tail gate a while, to make a morning of it. If you find it difficult to go all the way up Skyline, you can take the more direct route they suggest on their website (but beware, there are more switch backs): From Black Rd you can Make a left onto Gist Rd (at signs) and follow switch back turns. Make a sharp left onto Skyline Blvd. We are on the right. We've gone both ways (up Skyline and Gist), and if you do take the longer route on Skyline, we make it a game to count how many cars we see with trees coming down the hill. It's a fun way to pass the time as we listen to Christmas music on the radio and go by all the Christmas Tree farms! Happy tree hunting! read more

Ever since Taylor Swift's Christmas Tree Farm song came out I dreamed of visiting one. The drive alone was an escape from the city. The fresh air and smell of pine immediately got me into the Christmas spirit. It was simple - they give you a saw and off you go to find the perfect tree. Acres of land and plenty of trees. We ventured off to chopped down our tree and made some fun happy memories. Meet some friendly people on the farm that were super helpful since it was our first time we probably looked like Christmas fools. Prices are great - Douglas fur went for $60 vs $70 for white fur. COVID review - found this place while scoping out tree farms in the area. There are many tree farms in this vicinity but given the first week of December many had sold out. We got lucky this one was still open with plenty of trees. There is so much land to explore to find your perfect tree. I think it took us about 3 hrs of exploring to find ours. It was so much fun. Upon arriving you are greeted and they provide a saw if you don't have one. I recommend you take your own gloves, you will need them. Next you trail off into tree land. You can park and roam the many areas of the farm. They do have certain trees in certain areas so if your looking for a certain kind - like Douglas fir - just ask and get pointed in the right direction. We saw people who had mini picnics out the back of their trucks which we will probably try next time. Some people had their fur babies with them which made it seem more family friendly. The owner is really cool and he helped us put netting on the tree. The prices were fixed, not based on size of tree, which I appreciated because we get tall trees (10 ft+). Payment is on the way out of the farm. Upon leaving they offered some candy canes and believe you me those did not last the ride home! I think we will definitely be back next year! We came across this tree farm on account our original location was sold out, So glad we came across this tree farm, staff friendly and welcoming. Drive up is incredibly beautiful sight, roadways are bit tight in some areas. We had the delight to travel to cut down our Christmas tree to end the 2020 year. We make it a point to cut down our tree to continue my childhood memories and in hopes it continues from generation to generation. Selection and acreage is intense so, plan a day to locate and walk all the locations, all on one site. Trees range from short to tall and in different varieties , we located our tree after roughly a 3 1/2 venture, walking and enjoying the beauty and fresh mountainous air. They do provide a saw to cut if you forget yours or need one. The staff will assist in netting your tree for a minimal cost. Trees are priced reasonably, we finally located our tree 10' 1/2" for $75.00, well worth it, beautiful Noble Blue Fur. Hot Chocolate available upon entering or before you start your expedition. The day after Thanksgiving, we initially stopped at Four Winds, but it was definitely not to our liking, so we drove down the road and turned in to this tree farm. When we first arrived, a gentleman who introduced himself as the owner, Jeff greeted us with a friendly smile, asked if we had been there before and when we said no, he proceeded to hand us a map, and informed us about where to get which types of trees (They sell Douglas and White Firs). To my surprise and luck, it was Tobacco Ranch's 100 year anniversary, he gave us a wooden ornament with the farm's name engraved on it. It will be a nice keepsake for years to come and a good memory of our first time choosing and cutting our own tree. The ranch was not crowded, plenty of places to park and explore. They also offered free cider, cocoa, coffee and candy canes. Near the entrance of the farm, you can have the tree netted for $5 which I would recommend to do if you are planning to drive on the freeways. The quality and selection of trees were great if you're looking for a Douglas Fir as we were. We got a 10 ft Douglas Fir for $40. The trees were nice and full and symmetrically shaped. If you have kids, there is a little playground area for them to enjoy. When we left, Jeff gave us a complimentary mistletoe and I had asked him what association they had with Tobacco but that was just the last name of the brothers who had owned it before him. He mentioned it was a fruit farm before they changed it to a Christmas tree farm. What a wonderful first tree hunting experience! First time here right after Thanksgiving. We previously drove to Skyline Tree Farm but discovered that there were far more choices in Los Gatos (and the drive time was the same since this place was right off the CA-17). JS Tabacco happens to be one of the last ones up on the windy hill (about 10 min past many others). We were so pleased to find great quality trees (douglas firs) for $40! Pros: - $40 for ALL trees except white fir - Friendly staff - Free hot cider, coffee, cocoa - Not too crowded, ample parking - Dog friendly Cons: - The tree aisles were not as clearly marked as Skyline - $5 for netting (other places charge $2) The tree smells fresh and fragrant! Oh yes, it's Christmas time again! I should have written this review much earlier so this years shoppers could benefit from my review. I've been coming up to Tobacco Ranch for several years. Unfortunately, my s/o and I had to skip out the last 2 years. But we made sure to return this year. My s/o has been getting a tree here since he was a kid. His family found out about TR through a coupon in the newspaper. Sadly, we don't see those anymore. A 15-20 minute drive up, so be prepared for ear popping. The option to get a tree at the bottom of the property is fun (anytime to go 4wheeling!). When going down to the lower level, read the signs! Go early! Later in the morning/lunch hour, you'll encounter traffic going up and down the hill on the 1 lane road. Employees will not tie down your tree; there's a big sign at the lower level that reminds you. I went with a group of people a few weeks ago. So I made cookies in the morning to share after cutting down our tree's. $45.00 for a tree, not too bad (I don't recall what kind of tree). Netting is an additional $5.00 (other lots will do it for free). And free hot cocoa, hot cider and candy canes when you pay for your tree. Fresh wreaths ($10-15) and mistletoes are sold as well. Lisa R's review pretty much expresses my similar thoughts: Lack of advertisement of free hot cocoa and apple cider, lack of picnic tables, lack of area for kids to play (small old, metal playground and 2 bean bag toss boards). I'm a person who, when it comes to advertisement, will take advantage of every aspect to get the word out (ie: verbally inform each driver that we offer this/that at checkout, etc.). Nonetheless, we will return again! Friends have considered our Tobacco Ranch visits a "family tradition". This was my first time cutting my own tree, and I could not have asked for a better experience! It was a beautifully day, not too crowded, and we found the perfect tree. We brought lunch with us and ate at one of the picnic tables. Our little ones played in the adorable painted play house. We enjoyed some hot cider and candy canes, that were complimentary. This place is a hassle to get to. It's at the top of the mountain, so you won't have any cell reception once you're there. It is windy & the road is so narrow you have to pull off to the side to let opposite traffic by. Make sure you have a car that can make the trip. I parked at the top, but i recommend driving down, so you don't have such a hard trek up with your tree (I learned the hard way). Don't expect a perfect tree if you come here. The staff is nice, you can net your tree for free, and they also have free twine if you didn't bring your own. Do I see this as an annual tradition? Probably not because of the drive up/down. read more

I have gone there for the past 5 years and each time they are making reefs on the spot, they give a complimentary ornament for your tree, and complimentary coco, tea or coffee at the stand. This place is great. My family has been coming here for the last 35 years. It's our one true family tradition, coming here to choose our trees and cut them down. Now, we get 3 trees to take home -- one for my parents, one for my sister and her family, and one for my home. Unfortunately, this year, they were closed on Thursday, December 5th. We had checked their website and listing to make sure they were open on Thursdays (which say they are), but when we arrived at noon, the gates were closed and locked. Since we had arranged for all 3 families to come together on the same day for our christmas trees, we were left outside the gates figuring out what to do next. We tried calling the 2 phone numbers listed, but no one answered. So we were left to head down the hill to another tree farm. We ended up at Lone Star, which was a bit steep and difficult for my 72 year old father to walk through, and didn't have the character of JS Tabacco with the cut outs for the kids to pose for pictures. It was pretty disappointing not to be able to get our trees at the same place we've been going for the last 35 years. Hopefully they will be open next year, or at least they will post something saying that they will be closed. read more

Their prices are great, and they even have discount trees. We were able to get our tree for $20. The netting is an additional $5 and they have string to tie it to your car. We have been Visiting Tobacco Ranch for several years. We made it tradition to bring food and drink to do a tailgate event, before and/or after cutting trees. When we bring a new guest, they inevitably wonder "why are we passing all these other ranches?" IT IS WORTH THE WAIT AND EXTRA DRIVE. Besides, it's a fun drive anyway. Our tree this year has been up and decorated for about three and a half weeks. It is still super fresh. I have swept almost NO needles from below it. Definitely worth the drive. Prices are good but a lot of trees have bald spots. Their trees are bunched too close together which causes trees to grow into one another resulting in bald spots. I will return cause I like the hunt for that perfect tree. read more

We have been venturing to Tobacco Ranch for the past 40 years. We have raised all four of our kids with the family tradition of getting trees the day after Thanksgiving. Kids are all grown, so now we all go up to buy 5 trees every year. For a family reunion, 25 years ago, we needed a Christmas tree for a party in August. Drove up, with our own saw of course, and bought a tree. This year with all of the rain the owners were nice enough to spend a good hour winching my van out of the mud. We shopped here last Sunday night for a cut it yourself tree. I did my shopping around first and found that they had the best prices I could find you can get any size tree and they have all sizes for 40$ or 50$ for white fir. They have free coffee, tea and cider. They will wrap your tree and help you get it all tied up. When we went and arrived just before closing time we quickly cut down our beautiful tree. But when we got back in our car it wouldn't start. Jeff from the ranch jumped us , it didn't work helped us again try a different battery and other solutions for more than 40minutes before we finally got it started. We got home safely with our tree and I paid 40 for the tree and tried to give him 20 bucks for tip and he refused to except . He went above the call of duty and turned a fun gone frustrating trip back into a fun one!. I highly recommend this place, by the way they have an excellent selection of cut it yourself trees in a beautiful mountain atmosphere. read more
