    Potatoes and mushrooms

When you are in a particular ethnic enclave in New York City, you have to try what the local cuisine has to offer. If you are Brighton Beach, you have to try the Central Asian/Eastern European cuisine. I came to LOFT by Hot Potato on a Saturday evening. It was fairly crowded. Lots of people for brunch. The ambiance was cute and charming. Anyway, we ordered a variety of dishes: Garlic bread, caprese salad, potatoes and mushrooms and tuna steak. The garlic bread was a bit forgettable as the garlic had a bit of a raw taste and would be something I recommend against. The potatoes and mushrooms was delicious (not surprising given the name of the establishment) and had very generous portions. I would highly recommend them. We also ordered fruit punch and coffee. The fruit punch/compote was very good and had a lot of fruit pieces in it. If you're in the area, I would definitely recommend trying Loft by Hot Pot.

Homemade Apple Strudel served with vanilla ice cream

We stopped by for lunch because we had heard they serve good draniki, and they definitely lived up to expectations. The service was friendly, and everything we tried was delicious: the borscht, draniki, herring and potatoes, and drinks were all very good. But the highlight was definitely the homemade apple strudel served with vanilla ice cream. It was amazing. Overall, a really good experience!

I got the pumpkin avocado salad and it was so delicious! The pumpkin was baked to perfection. We also got latkes with their apple sauce. The latkes were crispy and fresh. There is also live music! This is a pretty great restaurant and the perfect stop after a day at Brighton beach! :)

Potato Latkes with applesauce and sour cream

This restaurant had numerous opportunities to get a five star review, but unfortunately, it will have to settle for less due to lackluster service, high pricing, inconvenient fees, and a rather disappointing finale. What prevents it from going any worse is the fact that the food is pretty good, and for the most part, well portioned. Their latkes might be some of the best you will ever have, outside of any Jewish deli. You get three perfectly portioned potato disks bursting with flavor, a nice amount of crust and grease that is not overwhelming either. Too few would be a ripoff and one too many would have me running for the nearest toilet. As someone who has eaten plenty of these in my lifetime, I recommend getting them with sour cream and applesauce for sides. Who says it has to be Chanukah to enjoy these? For my main entree I got one of their specials, the Wild Boar sausage. It comes with a fried egg, mushrooms, fried potatoes, and a side of mustard. This dish is very tasty... if done right. Boar meat is very gamey and chewy, and this dish is no exception. It cuts easily, but do not ignore the egg and mustard. Use both to create an insane flavor, or just let the yolk of the egg run over some of the food. Then you will have yourself a nice brunch! Skip the dessert. I am not even going to get into it. The strudel is tiny and though it is homemade, it lacks any sort of personality. Hans Landa would agree with me if he ate this. The complementary bread is great without overdoing the restaurant experience. Be careful when you eat in, they drop a little service charge on you if you do not look. It is not much, but is completely unnecessary, in my opinion. Let me enjoy my fare in sound peace of mind. In addition, they need more servers. Two servers during a lunch rush is not enough, though they were clearly working very hard. This might explain why some of the food I had was somewhat inconsistent. While this restaurant has a Eastern European flair, it definitely has a Russian feel to it, given it is in Manhattan Beach and close by two other Russian-heavy neighborhoods in southern Brooklyn, Brighton Beach and Sheepshead Bay. I recommend, just not going overboard.

Hot Potato House is one of a kind. One of the best restaurants to dine at this holiday season. I always order their borscht. It's super flavorful and I love that it's served with a savory meat puff pastry. They absolutely have the best potato latkes in all of Brooklyn! They are so fresh and crispy, fried to perfection. Make sure you order them with sour cream! The restaurant has plenty of other delicious appetizers and meals, but their potato and root vegetable based items are always top stand outs. HPH is 100% a South Brooklyn must!

Marinated herring served with fresh cucumber slices, tomato wedges, red onion, and scallions.

Fresh, flavorful dishes with vibrant veggies and savory fish--perfect for a light meal! The waiter was friendly and attentive, making sure everything was just right throughout the meal.

It was Sat but the music would start much later so there was no noise and we could talk. Almost all food we ordered was exceptionally delicious, from appetizers to desserts. The service was very attentive and we also got good suggestions helping to avoid ordering too much :) We highly recommend Chateau de Capitane for excellent delicious food and we'll certainly be back! Appetizers Trio Tartare - awesome! It had tuna, salmon, and yellowtail tartare and each had its own distinct taste. Can't really say which one was better as they were all good but different. Sesame Tuna - perfect! Tuna was tender and flavorful, melting in the mouth. Duck Salad - this one could be better as the duck was dry and scarce. Arugula Goat Cheese Salad - delicious! We were debating whether to order this salad as we make it at home, but we didn't regret. It had a perfect combo of ingredients + some sauce or smth making it a harmony. Kutaby with Herbs - fresh, warm, flavorful. Belyash with Meat - this eastern russia deep fried meat patty was about 1.5x of the standard size. It had perfectly fried dough (not burned) and plenty of juicy medium cooked meat inside. I tired belyashi in restaurants in russia and made at home, but this one surpassed them all. Just this single belyash already makes it worth coming back to Chateau de Capitane :) Soups Uha with Salmon - it was good, fresh, and clear. Plenty of salmon. It was tasty but somewhat standard. The taste could be made more colorful with some extra spices and maybe lemon. Dushpora - fresh and tasty, with cute mini-dumplings. We all tried and liked it. Solaynka - this one was unfortunately a miss. Tasteless and over salted. Mains Duck with Dried Fruits - simply amazing! If you like duck - this a must have! The portion was very generous and had la parts of duck - legs, wings, and breast. It was super juicy and tender, cooked to perfection. The dry fruits were of a good variety and matched the duck. Chilean Sea Bass with Creamy Polenta - soft, flakey, delicious! It wasn't not too fatty as a sea bass could be. Polenta was a great match as well as a mushroom sauce served on the side. Grilled Branzino - it was served nicely peeled off the bones and had great flavor and texture, yet was not "fishy". Stuffed Jumbo Shrimps - these were very good according to the people who ate them.

Sheep by Barashka (or in other words rather humorously when translated Sheep by Sheep) is an Azerbaijani restaurant (specifically Gorsky) similar to Village Cafe or Baku Palace with the prices on the menu being somewhat in the middle though closer to Baku. Like those spots, you go here and have one of two experiences depending on whether someone speaks Russian/Azeri and whether you're here for a party. It's part of the experience and luckily I was part of the latter. When my part of the group arrived, there were several salads such as an avocado salad with tomato, eggplant salad (basically the same thing as Turkish Soslu patlıcan,) and an Achuchuk salad (tomato and onion based.) There was also herring which was tasty. Soon arriving were some hot appetizers. There were two variations of Kutab/Qutab which is essentially a flatbread either stuffed with meat or with greens with both being outstanding and in my opinion a bit better than the other spots I mentioned. There was also potatoes with mushrooms which was okay (I prefer more of a crisp) as well as Khachapuri or cheese bread which was salty and delicious though perhaps a bit too buttery. The main dishes were the standouts. The sturgeon kabobs were outstanding with very tender flaky fish which paired nicely with the pomegranate molasses/narsharab found commonly in the region as well as another cold sauce which I believe was tomato based. In terms of meat, their specialty is chalahach or in other words baby lamb chops. These were meaty, tender, and some of the best I've ever had. The lulya kabob or ground lamb kebab was also tender and delicious and I would recommend them. The rest of the meat was also good but these were definitely the best. I don't remember having dessert. The food overall here was delicious and I can see why this has become a preference for them. There is apparently live music here but they weren't in that night which I didn't mind as it was easier to talk. Good food (especially the main dishes) and friendly staff.
